Nexus 5 not charging at all - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Am having problems charging my nexus 5 since last night.
I reflashed the Kitkat 4.4.4 rom on my nexus 5 from lollipop after i couldn't stand the ram issue lollipop having.
The following night my battery was at 20% and i left it charge overnight and i woke up finding before going work, found that the battery was still charging at 20% .
I tried with the original charger plug and cable and also wireless charging qi nothing charges and phone is losing percentage and have to keep using from the mains to keep the phone on.
When i use the usb cable or qi charger it says charging on screen then it goes not charging.
I tried re flashing 4.4.4 cleared the cache and tried different usb cables and wall plugs the problem still persists.
I replaced the battery beginning of March this year after i had this phone since launch day and new battery was fine.
I believe its either hardware or software problem causing this.
Please any advice or methods i can do to solve this problem would be nice.

That really narrows it down

Did you try charging when the phone is off?
It shouldn't be hardware if all you did was downgrade. The boot loader shouldn't influence it

Yes i have tried charging the phone while the phone was switched off for an hour but it shows battery icon empty and still charging

I'm facing this problem right now. Did you figure it what was wrong and fix it?

Is it possible that there is a loose connection inside the phone? Is the phone recognized when connected to a computer? Maybe a damaged USB port, cable, or charger?

[Q] Phone plugged in indicated charging but battery level keep decreasing. Help!

I installed CM 7.1 a few days ago and since then my phone has problem charging using the usb cable. When charging thru usb to pc or usb to wall charger, it indicated charging but battery kept draining slowly.
Then I tried a few other roms, including insertcoin 4.4.4, 4.4.6 and ARHD 6.2.1 and the problem persist, even with brightness at ~30%, wifi off. I checked the running apps and it has only a few apps running.
Does any one have the same problem? Can someone help me with this? Thanks.
Edited:
Forgot to mention, when the phone was charging, sometime i would get message "Unable to charge, phone is using more current than the USB cable can deliver. Please turn off phone and close unused apps." when i wasn't using the phone at all.

Do you have another usb cable to try?
If that doesn't work you need to make sure you have the most recent CWR installed, I think the recent one is blue in text. Just go to the Rom Manager app and see if you have the most current recovery flashed onto your phone.
I had this same problem on my old desire with cheap cables bought off ebay. Bought some genuine HTC ones and solved the problem straight away.

My cable is the original HTC cable and I tried another cable from Nokia. Same problem. I have a stock 1520 battery and a 1800 cheap battery i bought from ebay. I think my recovery is the most current one, which is 4EX touch.
Is my battery just bad? I realized sometimes it charged up 1~2 % and then started draining.
Overheating
Hi,
I had a similar problem, the phone was plugged but not charging. It was because of a overheating of the battery. In the battery info page, instead of charging it said overheating. I unplugged it, let it cool down, plugged it again and it was charging.
my battery status never said overheating. it indicates charging but the battery level drops. I also realize sometimes the battery level stayed the same for quite a long while but sometimes it drops pretty rapidly. has my battery gone bad or just the rom? any one got an idea?
okay, now i am using Battery Monitor Widget and found that either charging through PC usb or wall charger, the maximum charging current is about 120 mAh. As far as i know, wall charger should be charging at 1000 mAh and pc at 500 mAh.
Can someone tell me what's wrong? and how i can fix it?
Thanks!

You've tried a different cable, so try another charger. If this doesn't fix it then you should try flashing firmware and ROM back to stock and see if the problem persists, if it does then it is probably a hardware fault.
battery level weirdness sensation xe stock ics
I have an issue where the indicated battery level keeps dropping even when the phone is on charge with the original HTC wall charger. I have also tried another wall charger- same outcome. Also getting the message that current draw exceeds charging current. Once or twice phone has shut down due to low battery. But here's the weirdness....I take the battery out, put it back in and 'hey presto' the battery level is fine. It seems the phone only 'thinks' the battery is not charing, but it is. Any ideas as to a solution would be appreciated.
I also have the same problem with HTC Incredible S fake charging pls help thx

Charging very slowly

My nexus 5 started chargning very slowly lately, and it shows that it is charging through USB, altough it is connected to a wall charger.
I tried a different charger/different usb cable - same results.
What can I do?
Maybe it has something to do with the recent 4.4.4 update?
Thanks

well it keeps happening, and I have to plug to phone to a pc everytime for a sec and then back to the wall charger for it to charge in a decent speed....
what can I do?
yeah, I have same problem. my nexus 5 after 4.4.4 update charges veeeery slow. after 2 hours it charges maybe 20% even if the phone is switched off. can someone help? should I do downgrade to 4.4.3?
btw. Im using stock rom, kernel, recovery, etc. no mods at all. stock wall charger which came with my phone and tried other ones with no improvement.
thanks
I doubt it's a software issue, or a hardware issue with the battery. It's probably the cord and/or the charger going bad.
I tried several different chargers/cords(sony,nexus4,htc,samsung) and it was even worse

Ever since 4.4.3 USB charging has been slow. Wireless charging is 2x faster.

Nexus 5 won't charge (already changed battery and usb port board)

Hy guys, as you can read my phone suddenly started not to charge. One day i was chatting on whatsapp and suddenly the phone turned off with 5% of battery remaining. Since that moment the phone is not charging. I change the battery and the usb port board but it is still not charging. It recognises that the usb cable is plugged in but it doesn't charge... i tried to charge it while in bootloader, recovery or with the phone turned off.. Nothing worked. I don't want to factory reset it since i have 11% of battery holding at that level thanks to the charger. DO you guys have any ideas? thanks....

Try using stock charger and stock usb cable. I also had the issue stock usb cable fixed it.
I am using the stock charger but my stock cable is destroyed. I have another cable that is really good, I have always used it and I tryed also different cables but still not charging... It just can't stop charging from one moment to another because of the cable, that cable is perfectly fine. Thanks anyway Any other suggestion?

I know how these things works and I have already tried different chargers and cable and stock ones as well and it is not a problem of charger or cable. Any other useful suggestion?
Make sure that when you replaced the battery, all the cables were clipped back in right.

I hope to be asking in the right section,
my nexus 5 only works while charging, but the battery isn't charging.I mean,i left it during the night to charge, but it didn't move from 0%.i tried to unlock the bootloader to have a full wipe but still nothing changed.I can't understand what's the problem,i tried everything. It doesn't charge at all.I've also tried the app ampere and it says that it's ac connected, but the battery isn't charging ,even if the phone says the opposite:any idea?
thanks for the answers.
p.s i've changed the battery with a new original one and it worked fine, until some days where it's not charging anymore.the old battery does the same,i can't even use the smartphone with that .
Maybe the usb port/flex cable is defective?

no because I tried every possible cable, and everyone let me use the phone with 0% battery
Since you've eliminated the battery and flex cable, only thing left is the mobo?

Phone confused about charging

Hi guys,
I haven't been able to charge my phone properly for a while - after reset when I plug in the original charger, it charges fast, when I unplug it and plug it back in, it charges slowly. When I unplug it again, it still shows the charging icon forever but it won't charge when plugged in. Factory reset doesn't help. The phone also randomly shows the USB moisture message even though it never got wet. Changing cables and power sources doesn't help.
Build MHA-L29 8.0.0.375(C636)
Thanks for any ideas!
Blow out the USB charging port on the phone. Also, use a toothpick to GENTLY clean out the port of lint and dirt.
And use app that tracks your charging speed. Try ampere In playstore.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that already. Is it possibly a battery issue? I wouldn't mind replacing the battery, which is cheap rather than replacing the phone because of such nuisance.

Thanks, good idea.
Ampere clocks in at -250 mA after reset. Goes to around 1800 when plugged in to a third party charger, which drops to around 300 mA when unplugged (phone indicates that it is charging). After reconnecting it goes up to 1000 mA. I don't have my Huawei charger at work but it's similar - at first plug in it charges fast, after reconnecting it switches to the slow mode.
You should use your original charger. And see if supercharge is working. If not. Give it a shot in a service center. Theyll fix your phone for free if you still have warranty.

Well, before replacing the battery, try this:
- turn phone off
- connect to original Huawei Supercharge charger and charge up until 90% or so
- disconnect from charger and turn on
Use the phone as you normally would until around 35-40% remains, then try connecting the charger. If the issue persists, I still believe it is a problem with the charging circuitry rather than the battery. Especially if we take the moisture in the USB port message the phone shows. Replacing the USB charging circuitry should not be a big problem AFAIK, it is connected to the motherboard with a snap-on connector, replacing it should be easy as disconnecting the connector, removing the circuit with the port and placing the new one in.
Yep, I guessed it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4avHFWjsz4k
Are you having issues where the phone is displaying 30 or so percent battery remaining, but the phone shuts down?

That's a great point. I didn't know the USB circuitry can be replaced by itself. I don't have any issues with the phone switching off. It uses the battery all the way down to 1% or so. I don't see any erratic percentages. I'll replace the part and update you on what happens. Thanks!

Yup, that was the problem. Easy fix. Thanks for the suggestion!
Make sure your microphones still work. I had to replace my USB charging board (which also contains the mics) recently and the first one I tried had a bad mic. I could make phone calls just fine, but google assistant couldn't hear me. I got a replacement and both mics were fine.

I wish I could close this thread but a lot of weird stuff happened since I "fixed" the phone.
Since I bought the battery before I was told it could have been the USB board, I replaced the old battery too. The first charge was smooth and I drained the battery to 0 as recommended. I plugged it back in and it charged to 5% and stopped. I noticed a chemical burn smell that I later realized was coming from the USB circuitry. At this point there was no way to charge the phone but when tried to turn it on, I still saw the red charge icon. I opened it up and put the old defective USB board back in and I was able to charge it. Throughout the day I noticed weird battery drain that I saw recently before the replacement of the USB board. As usual, I tried to restart the phone to fix that but it won't turn on. The battery was at 85% when I shut it down. When I try to turn it on, it won't even show that red charge icon. Nothing. I can't put the old battery back to see if that's the problem, because I bent it during replacement.
Could it be a battery issue this time or is the phone just dead at this point?
