High RAM Consumption - Xiaomi Mi 4i

I am getting around 750 MB free of the 2 GB provided. Is this normal? Is there a way to get more free RAM ? Please help me out here. Thanks in advance.

I think it is normal. The MIUI 6 overlay takes up quite a bit of RAM. My Nexus 4 used to provide me with about 1.2 Gigs of RAM out of the 2 Gigs available. The only way to ensure you don't run out of RAM is by clearing recent apps frequently. Fortunately, unlike stock Android, the MIUI 6 provides an option to clear all recent apps at once, hence saving us from the pain of doing it one by one.

I tried uninstalling the unused apps. I also uninstalled Google Now search because I dont use it since it doesn't blend in MIUI like with google launcher so its pretty much useless for me. After uninstalling it saved some ram for me.
But after clearing all the apps the phone runs fine
Yes it slows down when loaded many apps at once, honestly MIUI sucks. I wish there was an AOSP ROM available and the source code be released soon, then watch how all the issues are solved

So we have to wait for xiaomi to release dev ROM for root? How long did they take to release it for redmi note 4g?

For REDMI Note 4G it was available from before - So at the time it launched here - Dev ROM was already out.

2.2 is stable, and what most of us run now. You can get a fix to those issues by reading the topic, those files have been posted you just need to push them to your phone.
*Edit* and that sucks that threads, closed; i just noticed that. At least we got a nice fix up to our system before losing more support. I think that this new LG coming out is really going to hamper development for the gs4, which is a shame because this is a nice phone.

Nothing wrong with trying version 2.0 or 2.1
Personally I like 2.2 but I need to return the phone to the store next weekend so I would like to have 2.1 or 2.0
Right now with 2.2 I have 220MB of FREE RAM (which is pretty neat)
With 1.9 I had 200MB
So yeah for 10MB-20MB I would stay hours testing and testing
I think it's worth it since the thing I like the least about Android is the lack of memory and the apps that automatically run
It's insane killing them
I've tried at least 10 programs that auto-kill, none of them works perfect
So that's why I REALLY appreciate 2.2 for now
There is one that has zero Bloatware, for sure I'd like to test that, I believe it was 2.0
I run autokiller memory operator on both mine and my g/f's gs4s and I don't have any memory issues. I already pm'd you with a link to the topic you should visit to return to stock. As far as removing bloat goes, I prefer 2.2 having it all because the roms released without the bloat had issues sycing facebook and twitter correctly and had other issues as well. I have titanium backup, if its an app i dont want--its important to know what an app does before you remove it--then that program will rip it right out. Works great for moving apps to sdcard as well.

I'm still learning this Android OS.. coming from Windows Mobile as a chef doesn't help at all! LOL! but building a ROM for Android seems to be easier than Windows Mobile.

The problem with Titanium Backup is that the apps in
/system/apps/
are never backed up (only the data)
I have uninstalled A LOT of Bloatware and my device has 400MB+ of system storage
220MB of RAM
I'm really proud of the knowledge I have acquired, really thankful to XDA as well

Screen Casting/Media Sharing

I have released a screen casting application in the Android Market using SL4A.
It allows the user to mirror their screen on their laptop or desktop over wifi.
I have attached the apk and the python script needed to run the application.
This is an open source project hosted on google code. Feedback and help improving the performance/additional features is WELCOME!!!!
Support for the X10, Atrix, and NexusS is ready out of the box because those are phones I was able to test it with. Rename the GroundWork.py.txt to GroundWork.py after downloading.

My phone crashed and went into a boot loop after messing with it. I had to reflash my rom and data.
How stable is this app?
Why would the app do that?
The app was a slow working on the x10.
Didn't like the flow of it.
Got the app to start to stream, then the whole phone crashed.
I like the idea of the app and the structure. I am sad to say I won't use it unless the bootloop crash problem goes away.
If you can get that sorted out. I will be happy to help with other testing.
I hope your app development goes well. I wish you luck.

??? This doesn't do anything regarding the booting off your phone. Are you rooted and what rom are you running? To be honest I am testing the rom on my motorola Atrix so it may be slower on previous gen phones. If I can't iron out the bugs or find an xperia to test I will remove it from the supported phones for now.
The app is in beta it is not reached version 1 yet.
I am sorry the app cause you to reflash your rom, it should not have.

I was running the 2.1 rom in my signature. Yes i am rooted. No need for sorry. I porbably just screwed up lol. I am still learning about testing apps. I got the rom thing down though.
I can try again sometime in two weeks when i dont need my phone running stable. I would say remove the suppport from the x10 so these threads dont get bombed by the noobs who have no idea what they are doing. Thats my opinion though.

Difference between ROMs

Hi Guys,
is there a comparison-table available with the different ROMs for the xt720? I'm about to flash one of this onto my stockphone, but I'm not sure which one.
From what i can see there is not much of a difference between them, so which one is the 'best'? Or do they have different purposes?
I know, i know, 'read through the thread', but come on guys, who wants to read to several hundreds of posts... this is becoming much too big to get an overview
Thanks for the help.

Miui has some things in chinese...different interface ......get used to steelepic blue v4 first.....that's my advice..u can always try the miui first!!
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App
I've run both
I've run both Miui & SteelBlue.
SteelBlue is nice, but it has issues like launcher hanging for 30 seconds, etc.
I was skeptical about running Miui, so I held out.. But I decided to try it (Khals.v1) & it was good, then upgraded to Khal's v2.
Miui runs much faster then steel, the latest Khal v2 eliminated 99.9% of the Chinese. I use English & it is great... Runs like it was designed specifically for the phone by a manufacturer.... + Battery drains way too quick on Steelblue... Miui battery is best I've seen on this phone. MIUI is hands down the BEST!
I agree...miui is good...but then u don't have hdmi functionality available in it!
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App
camera and camcorder apps are a big thumbs down on miui.
thats one of the cons of using this beauty...miui..
If launcher is slow coming back, you can try adding this is in your local.prop and reboot. It keeps the launcher in memory. Works well for me.
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
I used Zeam, with Folder organizer to change icons, and no widgets to keep launcher memory footprint low.
Works well for me until I switched to MIUI, which is faster for me. I don't use HDMI and rarely takes video, so it's a good tradeoff for me.

I agree the Miui's weakness to be the Cam........
after flashing MIUI i must say i'm impressed. Nice and Smooth. The only thing i don't like it the launcher, but i have Launcher Pro at hand
Camcorder MIUI very bad, but ram free 60-80M
I've tried them all and honestly I'm finding stock 2.1 to be the best after flashing it last night for the first time since February, though that could change with further testing... In terms of the 2.2 ROMs Steel Epic Blue is great as is MIUI. I found MIUI to be faster and more powerful though (but 2.1 seems even faster and smoother right now strangely.... ).

Mi 4C is it worth it?

Hello all,
I hope your devices are treating you well.
I currently have a Nexus 4, which the support for is slowly dying. Therefore, I need to buy a new well supported phone.
First off, I really like the Mi 4C. However, I fear that it will become obsolete and follow the N4's fate really soon. Is that true?
Second, when I got the N4, I realized that there were some issues that people didn't speak much about such as noise while in phonecalls because of the proximity sensor and some headset buttons not working. Are there any similar - or untold - problems like that?
Finally, some rumors are popping out about the Mi5, do you think its worth the wait?
Any and all answers are appreciated. Thank you.
IMO if you really like vanilla android, fast updates and vast amount of custom ROMs, you will probably gonna miss that on Xiaomi's phone
My last phone was Moto G first gen and my first impression after moving to Xiaomi (MIUI) is that some features from vanilla android are missing on MIUI. I really missed that on the first couple of weeks but I learn to live without that for a few more weeks, had enough and switched to CM12 ROMs
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the hardware. It's just I didn't really like MIUI
I think you should try MIUI first to see if you like it or not and you can always use custom ROMs if you want.

Little things like expanding notifications on the lock screen without pulling notification drawer, task switcher design, inconsistent notification color and overall UI experience is less polished than vanilla android.
It looks like a minor thing but once it's gone I really missed that.
Well MIUI isn't so bad, just a bit different and needs time to get used to. The device seems the best 5' vfm right now. Upon release of kernel sources I'm sure it will get proper dev support too.
Thanks for all your answers.
The way I understand it now is that the device doesn't have proper dev support due to the lack of an open source kernel. Was the release of this kernel a rumor or was it confirmed?
Also, can you guys please answer me about the wait for Mi 5 and the device's hardware issues?
Thanks again

4c is probably the best bang for buck phone you can get now, great specs incl ir blaster, great camera, loud speaker although mono. Only thing keeping it back is kernel sources but that hasn't stopped 2 different cm roms coming on it.
I also came from a Nexus 4 and this is a great upgrade and I expect it have support for 3 years at least.
Mi5 will be great phone with flagship specs so at least wait for the official reveal and prices. If I were in your position I'd probably lean towards the mi5
I just got this Mi-4c a few days ago from a friend. Honestly, I love MIUI. I used to have a ROM with it on my old Motorola Triumph from Virgin Mobile. I think it's amazing with the themes. Pair in different fonts and live wallpapers and I'm in love.
I currently use an iPhone 6s as my primary, have a Note 3 for media, a BlackBerry Z10 just because and a Lumia 640 for the same reason.
I can't wait until my official smart wallet case from Xiaomi comes! I love technology... ^.^

I'm using stock MIUI 7. Luckily I'm pretty familiar with the layout, so I can navigate easily even though everything is in Chinese. I figure if I want to modify, I can always do it. For now though, I'm enjoying it the way it came.
Only thing I've done is get the Playstore and the Google installer. Besides that, I liked the phone as it came.

Yes, it is a pretty neat phone. I actually like MIUI, more than I thought. But it bugs me, that I can't set the DPI. That's actually the only thin preventing me from using MIUI. Also, I can't seem to be able to download Theme or anything from the MI Store.
Did you check if you had any malware installed when you got it? Mine was infected when I got it. I just bought one for my significant other, got it today, and found out that it too was infected, had TWRP installed and Xiaomi.eu as ROM. :silly:

You can manually chnange the DPI:
1) Install a terminal emulator
2) Type in "su" and grant Superuser rights
3) Type in "wm density YOURDPI"
4) Reboot.
Just replace YOURDPI with the dpi you want, for example 380.
Horizontal multi-multitasking they way they do it sux. Just give me lollipop carousel and MIUI is everything iOS should be but never will be.

Why custom room?

I see a few "home-brewed" roms out there but not with their difficulties to install and possible soft bricking.
I don't see any of these roms beating out simply sticking with stock, rooting, exposed framework w/ gravity box, V4A, and secure settings.
This is all that is needed for me to be happy. Until an official rom comes out that has this phone figured out with gapps and have all these mods built in and a bit safer to flash, then maybe then.
So, all in all, I'm happy until this happens. Any one else happy with their set up as of now and if an official rom comes then fine time to play some more?

Because custom rooms on phones are much cooler. You can flash any color paint you want on the walls and even flash yourself a man cave. J/K. But seriously, this is the first phone I have ever owned that I'm actually satisfied with the stock Android experience. When I was using an HTC Evo 3D back in the day, I grew quite fond of MIUI so I would love to see an Oreo version of that down the line. For now I'm sticking with stock. I never tried Lineage OS so I may try that as things progress, but not as a daily driver. There is a version of Lineage for my Nvidia Shield TV that I may duel boot to and play with before I try it on my Pixel.

There are a lot of MIUI launchers, if that's the experience you're looking for - see https://play.google.com/store/search?q=miui launcher . (An app is an app, regardless of which phone it's running on, so the fact that a particular app is running in an HTC won't change anything about it much, if at all, it's just the launcher that makes the real difference.)

What I was actually stating is that the stock Pixel ROM is actually quite nice and useable even for a power user. Whereas the stock ROM for other phones I've owned were the opposite so I actually needed to run a 3rd party ROM to truly enjoy my phone. As far as MIUI, the launcher was not the reason I liked it so much. In fact, I really enjoy the Pixel launcher. (#1) When running a real MIUI ROM you have the ability to master toggle Root. This is a security feature and you can turn root off entirely when not needed and turn it on only when needed. (#2) The built in firewall is very handy. It not only allows you to select which apps can connect to the internet and which ones cannot but specifically which app processes can and cannot. I am able to stop Google services from sending anonymous info behind the scenes while keeping basic functionality of Gapps. (#3) The built in permission manager. Much more advanced than the permission manager on our Pixel 2 phones being that on MIUI there is a list of permissions most people don't know exist. These permissions are not configurable and hidden in most ROMs such as the ability turn off an apps access to your phones unique ID (IMEI, serial #, etc). These advanced permissions can be configured for both user and system apps alike. Again, just giving an app the bare minimum permissions it needs to function correctly without anything extra or intrusive. In addition, I really like the settings menu layout as well as additional settings not found in most AOSP ROMs. However, the last version of MIUI I really used like this was Jelly Bean based so I can only imagine how far it has come since then and I'm looking forward to trying an Oreo based version on my Pixel some time in the future.
I was about to purchase pixel 2 this weekend. While big brother (pixel 2 XL) having certain screen QC issues, I was thinking to get smaller one (even though - not big fan of small screen, small battery and huge bezels, but whatever). I remember my good old days with Nexus 5 with tons of custom ROMs. I was thinking the is going on right now with pixel 2 family.
I was shocked that there''re no custom ROMs so far. Wow... Even TWRP is in beta stage, but pixel 2 has been released months ago. That's weird....
Am I missing smth or got blind all of sudden? Why there''re no custom ROMs???

A/b partition that Google decided to go for pixel is tough and cumbersome for devs
And most developers moved to oneplus due to less price
Cheers ?

That's what I was thinking about OnePlus 5T.
I guess whoever wants custom ROM should get OnePlus 5T, but not pixel 2.

You might need to use a PC or view XDA in desktop mode from a mobile device.
