How to find out what bands for 2G/3G phone uses? - General Questions and Answers

I have a fake galaxy note 4 with fake specs listed. How do I find out the real bands of 2G/3G my phone uses? Apps like hardware specs are no help, already tried.

Samsung Galaxy S or Captivate?

Hello, I need some help in choosing my new phone I have an opportunity to buy Samsung Galaxy S for $700 here in Russia but I really don't like its iPhonish design but it's possible to buy some replacing backplates and firmware support is better than Captivate's one I think.
And I really love the Captivate's design, it really looks fantastic! But I am not really sure if it will be unlockable by the end of this summer when I come back home, so it's very risky.
Advise me something, please
P.S. Sorry for 2 themes in different thredes but I really have only 1 day to choose.
btw Samsung Galaxy S is HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
so it's better to buy AT&T Data plan for 3g internet? because t-mobile has 1700/2100 and is 2100 enough for normal 3g?
If you're interested in the Captivate and are buying it outright ($500, so it's a bit cheaper), I would get a commitment from AT&T that they'll allow you to unlock it first. I read here somewhere that AT&T said they have a 10 month exclusivity contract with the Captivate and there won't be any unlocks until then. I agree with you, I like the Captivates design a ton compared to the other Galaxy S phone designs.
Is gyroscope so important in Captivate and has anybody tried to use Samsung Galaxy's face camera?
I would go with the galaxy s if i could. More broadly released and has that physical homebutton which i feel is much needed.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
why does the international version of galaxy s does not have the gyro where the US branded versions have it? Moreover, the US version has 6 axis where as the international one has only 4
The gyro is what gives it the extra two axises.

Which tablets can you use as a Phone? (No 3rd party app/VOIP)

I'm wondering what tablets out there that you can use as a Phone, even if they are hacked or need to be shipped overseas!
I used the original Galaxy Tab (7") as a phone (T-Mobile/USA) since late October 2010, but am looking to switch to a better/faster tablet phone. The Galaxy Tab I used was hacked by a guy who enabled the 'phone' function of it (used European firmware or something?)
I purchased the new Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus assuming that can be hacked to do it, unfortunately it cannot (Would need to buy an oversees model and ship it here)...
So what tablets allow this?
--I heard the Galaxy 8.9 might
--There's the new Galaxy Note and LG Vudo (spelling?), but those are only 5", a little small then what I'm used to
I'm not looking for Wifi calling, or 3rd party app calling, or VOIP calling, I'm talking GSM Calling (making a call from a SIM Card that supports voice + data)
I tried doing a Google search but it's a little hard finding accurate results with keywords like tablet/phone/gsm calls/etc
Hoping you experts out there might direct me in the right place
Broken in the Marketplace has a new Tab 7.0 that does it right out of the box. I can't remember the model number, but it's white and for AT&T I think

What do you mean Broken in the Marketplace? I'm not sure if I read that right, are you saying there is a tablet on AT&T that is capable of this out of the box?
I went to their website and didn't see anything :\
HTC Flyer 3G, but needs to be hacked.

I don't think it's from AT&T directly, but it is 3G-band compatible with their service.
Broken's For Sale thread is here.
Hope you can work something out
Thanks for the feedback and providing that link! The HTC Flyer looks decent, wish it had better specs (Dual core)... and that link to the Broken's for Sale, unfortunately I don't have 10 posts yet, so gotta wait it out!
Also wondering the same thing. I'm looking for a tablet i can just stick my T-mob sim in and use as a phone. no extra plan or anything. I have an android plan on it already.

If you find anything let me know So far I've only seen 1 or 2 options :\ I was debating getting the Sony Tablet P and doing VOIP but I'm a little turned off by VOIP after hearing some disadantages
Found this topic after doing a Google search for the same question...what I've found over time:
-HTC Flyer 3G - can be made to work as a GSM voice/text device with some work, and works on T-Mobile 3G; drawback being that it's ~$450 (like $200 more than the Wifi version) and single-core
-Samsung Galaxy 7.0 (original) - you obviously know about this one =P
-Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 - can do GSM voice/text and 3G/4G web out of the box; drawback being the high ~$600 price (it is a quality tablet, though), 7.7" size (I'd sooner go for a plain 7", but that's just me), and only does 2G on T-Mobile
-Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 - AFAIK can do GSM voice/text on the international version; drawback being that it only does 2G on T-Mobile
-T-Mobile Springboard (Huawei Mediapad) - from what I've gathered on the Mediapad/Springboard discussion topic on XDA, flashing the ICS beta from Huawei grants it GSM voice/text capabilities, but because of the IMEI, you're limited either to data-use only or GSM voice/text-use only (I could be wrong, but I can't truly confirm one way or the other); drawback being that there's very little support for it (doesn't have it's own board on XDA)
-Dell Streak 7 - has a dialer app "hidden" in the system, but nobody has been able to find a way to use it AFAIK
And there's a few random ZTE/Huawei/etc 7" tablets that seem to support GSM voice/text, but finding info on them seems to be even more difficult than on the Mediapad/Springboard, they seem to be pretty low-spec, and AFAIK they'd only offer 2G on T-Mobile (and probably on AT&T too).
Why companies (especially in the US) are so reluctant to add GSM voice/text capability to 7" tablets, especially ones compatible with T-Mobile US 3G, is beyond me, when there's a clear desire for it since the original Galaxy Tab 7. I'd really love a nice high-end tablet that I could just easily pop in the SIM from my T-Mobile phone and easily use.
Also, while on topic - I know you're obviously looking to upgrade your Galaxy Tab 7, but how does it currently work? From what I understand, you either have the choice of GSM voice/text and 2G web or T-Mobile 3G (not both), correct?
galaxy note 10.1
the new Samsung galaxy note 10.1 has phone capabilities right...

The variety of galaxy s3's

I'm looking to buy one to use on T-Mobile prepaid network, since they seem to offer the most data (5gb for $30), which models would fully work on T-Mobile? I know at&t is lte, but T-Mobile is starting an lte thing, so that would be cool. Which can I get without unlocking, if any? And if I have to unlock, is that something I can do myself? I have a decent amount of experience rooting, but this is different. Thank you.

I'm sure a lot of people (including myself) would buy a Nexus 4 if the Play Store wasn't sold out all the time
@OP, I personally have never used LTE, but I can't imagine that it's significantly faster in real-world usage than HSPA+. IMO, you should go for an international SGS3 (assuming they work on T-MO US) and live without that ridiculous carrier branding you Americans are used to .

You would need one specifically for T-Mobile's LTE network. If you want to buy a T-Mobile LTE-capable phone NOW, you should get the Note 2, which has an LTE chip/antenna inside that is disabled for now. Just like 3G frequencies differ across carriers, so do LTE frequencies. No existing LTE devices on other carriers will work on T-Mobile's LTE. I believe they're looking to replace their 1700 MHz HSPA+ with LTE but I could be wrong.

I don't think so. That's crazy.
The nexus 4, gs3 and gnote II on tmobile all have deactivated band 4 lte chips so when tmobile gets it those phones will have access to it. I suggest you get the tmobile gs3 because the s4 is faster than the exynos 4 and the extra gig of ram makes a difference.

You're wrong on all accounts:
1. The Nexus 4 has slight LTE capabilities on one or two bands, which are used by AT&T, and they're weak because there's no power amp for the antenna. It happens to be left over from the Optimus G because they share the same motherboard, but it was cheaper to leave it on then to make a totally separate assembly line. There is no T-Mobile LTE compatibility in the Nexus 4.
2. The Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile doesn't have LTE. T-Mobile themselves said that they're releasing a new version of the Galaxy S3 with LTE for their network. The Note 2 HOWEVER, has been proven to have an LTE chip hidden inside.
3. The Snapdragon S4 is not faster than the Exynos 4. I have the i9300, I can tell you this from experience. You can also look up benchmarks online. The GPU in the Snapdragon S4 is junk for gaming, and the processor itself is not faster overall than the S4. It's not all about "Oh the Gigahertz are more on the S4." That's why so many people were disappointed the US version had an inferior processor. Also, the 2GB of RAM doesn't do anything for performance. It's just future-proofing.
Do your research.

Just because the s4 is slower on games ( benchmarks are pointless) doesn't mean its worse. Some will not use the exyons at all anymore so there are benifits to using the snapdragon like more developer support

Indeed, I stick away from exynos (and tegra) because of the lack of developer cooperation from them.
And even though the T-Mobile s3 has an inferior processor on paper, (2 vs 4 cores) remember that it is based loosely on the A15 architecture, which is claimed by ARM to be double the performance of the A9 architecture which is in the exynos 4.

I never said it was worse. I just said it's not faster. Also to add on yo what you said, the S4 has better battery efficiency. It really depends on what you're looking for.

P.s. I find a nexus 4 8gb, brand new on Craigslist, but I have to pay $49 to sign on to solavei wireless (uses T-Mobile) should I just get that, pay the month they make me pay up front, then just switch in a T-Mobile card? Solavei is prepaid, so I'm not worried about black listing.

Like said MOST OF THEM WILL NOT. Google first, ask later. The s3's from other networks will not work with the 4g/hspa network because they do not have the antenna for the aws spectrum we use.

No. Only the T-Mobile one will work because it's the only one that supports 1700 MHz (AWS). Most international phones don't support 1700 MHz (T-Mobile is 1700 MHz/2100 MHz), but will work on AT&T's bands (850/1900 MHz). However T-Mobile has been very slowly moving over to the same bands as AT&T, so soon you'll be able to use any AT&T compatible phone on T-Mobile.
I'm probably best off buying the nexus 4

I would go with a samsung processor because games are not the only thing people do on the phone. Soon emulators for various desktop OS will be available on the phone and their will be a phone OS race. So because masses have exynos. Devs will be forced to work things on exynos and plus exynos is good in data rendering and executing. Plus encrypting your work is really fast on exynos even better than intel processors.

See this is where the problem lies. Devs cant work on something without the proper documentation (Which Samsung refuses to release, even after they stated they would.) This is why alot of the CM team has already stated they will not get another samsung device or any device that has this chip in it.

Yeah, I have the i9300 and that's the only thing that erks me. We have the more powerful phone, we can modify Samsung ROMs, but we pretty much have (actually stable) nightlies for AOSP/AOKP based ROMs. I would have gone with a US carrier S3 if it wasn't for the S4 Dual. I game heavily (GTA 3/VC, Dead Trigger, NFS:MW, MC4, etc), so I rely on the fastest processor out there. The S4 Dual is capable as a CPU, but the Adreno GPU that comes with it is meh. The 2GB of RAM is just futureproofing and doesn't affect performance. If the US S3's had the S4 Pro (Quad), I'd have bought one. The Note 2 seems enticing but I think it's too big for me.

Note 3 models/frequencies/forums and how to spot a FAKE / CLONE
This forum is about Samsung Note 3 and it is NOT about clones or fakes. Asking for support on clones and fakes in any of the Samsung Note 3 forums is unacceptable!
Asking how to spot the differences between fakes/clones and "the real thing" is however acceptable, but given the fact that we now see 2-3 posts like that every day it is really becoming a major nuisance, so let's keep all this in a single place and avoid repeating the exact same questions again and again.
There is also a Note 3 Neo (N750/N7505) which is somehow similar in design to the Note 3 but with only 2 GB RAM and 1280*720 screen - there is a separate forum for those models here!
PLEASE DO NOT START ANY OTHER THREAD ASKING FOR THE SAME THING AGAIN AND AGAIN!
If you have new information relevant or new questions please post under this thread!
Currently there are many REAL Note 3 devices from Samsung, including (but not necessarily limited to) SM-N900, SM-N900(various letters), SM-N9000(various letters), SM-N9002, SM-N9005, SM-N9006, SM-N9008, SM-N9009. So far the overwhelming majority of the original devices have 32GB internal flash but there seem to be some 16GB devices listed/sold by reputable sellers in the world, so that will not be a good test. Please also note that (as I write this) there are 4 OTHER official Note 3 forums on xda - see links in the table-like list below.

The exact same letters CAN be found on some of the clones, so that is also not a good/definitive test.
Also some of the information displayed by system-information programs CAN BE FAKED - there are now clones that report 1920x1080 screens and 3GB RAM (which in itself should be a red flag since for instance an original N9005 should report around 2.38GB in RAM Manager, the rest being mapped to video/3D).
At this moment the best way to check if a phone is a clone/fake seems to be the SPen - the original Samsung pen is a device (similar/compatible with certain Wacom pens/digitizers) that is wireless-powered from about 10-20 mm away from screen of an original Note and on the home screen from about 10mm away the special pen hardware will provide a position (without any contact) and you will see a pointer and eventually some "hoover" actions; you can also press the special button on the side and you will get the special circular menu (aircommand). So far no clone has such a digitizer/pen. (the aircommand when you REMOVE the pen from the Note3 CAN be easily faked, since that one is another sensor that only feels when the pen was removed).
The other dead giveaway is the actual screen and screen resolution - some of the clones also fake the reported screen resolution as 1920x1080 but on the fakes when you take a screenshot (with a palm gesture or with Home+Power) that one does NOT come as 1920x1080 but instead as something like 1280x720 (other known clones have 960x540 or so).
Also if you are accustomed to the Samsung AMOLED screens you can immediately see the difference to the LCD or even IPS screens - outdoor is harder but indoor if you force the brightness from lowest to highest you immediately see the backlight on LCD/IPS screens and the pure black on the AMOLED.
Please also note that no Samsung Note 3 has any Mediatek processor like MTK6589 , MT6572 , MTK6572 or similar, so all those are fakes.
Apparently none of the clones (so far) have NFC and/or IR. Also the battery is smaller.
Also a very good test seems to be the presence of Odin/Download mode (from full power off with Volume Down + Home + Power) and Recovery mode (from full power off with Volume Up + Home + Power).
Here are some threads on some of those clones/fakes (inside you can see how hard is to tell just by looking at the device, and you might also find extra specific support if you have one of those devices):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2460620
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549036
Somewhere around there are even videos with some of those devices.
EDIT:
There are already some other excellent posts added to this thread, thank you very much to all the users that have contributed!
I feel the need to add that most advice so far is for the cases when you can test the device in your hands, in case that is not possible please just use your good judgement and if it looks too good to be true chances are that it is a fake.
I have also seen another difference that you might be able to spot before opening the original box - the Samsung box has at least 2 (most often now 3 with the one on region-lock) stickers/seals applied in such a way that you can not open the box without cutting those. One of them on Samsung phones also has a copy of the IMEI - which I believe for most real Samsung phones starts with 35 or so. None of the fakes that I have seen (on videos) have any of those.
EDIT:
Thanks to user sap7e here we also have a picture with some of the more visible differences!
Well you could also hook it in Kies and it should say the real model too.
Also the packaging on fakes usually look like a copy rather than the real deal.
3rd, if it sells for cheap and from an unknown seller it's probably a fake a well.
That's why all my phones come from the carrier

@OP, Ive made the thread a sticky for a short period of time, Ive left a not in your post 1 reference to others.
Thank you.
My 3 steps of checking.....
1. I'm pretty sure the Wacom digitizer is not real on the fakes. So if you get a fake Note 3, your S-pen is most likely just a piece of plastic with a print of the button instead of a physical button.
2. Type *#0*#, if you see a button called "TSP Hover" then you are good to go, else: FAKE.
3. No Samsung logo? FAKE!

No clone, I think TSP Hovering is how is supposed to be and is just one of 10 or more testmode options), TSM might have been a typo.

Fake Note 3 review - http://www.androidauthority.com/goophone-note-3-review-clone-wars-324906/
How to spot a fake:
Use Kies, if Kies doesn't recognize it after proper installation/drivers, it's a fake.
This should be pretty much the first and the most reliable thing to do.
As a quick initial test, I put the Imei number into a mobile phone recycling site ( I use mazuma.com) and if it comes as unrecognized it is almost definitely fake.

Play store has the app "Genuine Galaxy S4/Note 3". It will tell you if the note 3 you have is real... - http://www.appszoom.com/android_applications/tools/genuine-galaxy-s4note-3_dcdxs.html
Someone else provided a link for it outside the google play store...
Just be aware if xPrivacy is installed and limits the apps ability to read all the information it needs it will say the Note 3 is NOT GENUINE...
I have 2 not genuine BUT real Note 3's. Turn xPrivacy off and they are real..

That redirects to a Web page that then has a download link that redirects to the play store supposedly - but the play store says that it is no longer available. Please advise.

Just test if the SPen works as expected (with the side button from the pen opening AirCommand); if you must have a second test look if Kies 3 recognizes the phone.
Whao.

What - no phone model!?

Is it true that there isnt a phone model of Notepro 12.2 - only wifi-only and 4G/lte but no a model that is capable to GSM calls too?
Sent from my Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8000).
There is a phone call feature in both 3g SM-901 and in the 4G LTE SM-905 and simply if you wouldn't be able to make GSM calls then why would they include phone dialer

That is good news! I asked about this from a retailer and they said that 4G is only a tablet. Im considering to upgrade my N8000 and the GSM phone calls is a must have feature.

I wish I waited for a LTE Model but I do like my Wifi Note

It was a main reason for me to buy N8000 at the first place (tablet, phone, pen). I didnt like the idea carrying a tablet and the phone with me, so N8000 was the answer. And now when I have also Sony Smartwatch 2, I live in a heaven =) I cant go back in time and have a phone and a separate tablet. No way! So I was abit disappointed when I didnt see specs about GSM network and the retailer said that NotePro (both wifi and 4G) is only a tablet, not a phone like my N8000. So probably they dont know real specs or they just have two models without a GSM networking ability.
Those models are:
Wifi+4G: SM-P9050ZWANEE
Wifi only: SM-P9000ZWANEE

I definitely know what you mean and I also think the same as I want my tablet to include a dialer etc . you even could notice the dialer on the tablet package itself on both 3G and 4G LTE models. I will try to give you a link to YouTube video while the guy tried the dialer on the 3G model .

I spent most of last year using an imported Galaxy tab 7.7 with 3G and could make calls that thing was great. I am sorry I sold it.

Cost 780$ us
From my friend
Comes with nothing
gust charger and white box
Quite cheap. Wifi only costs 950 euros here (1300 us dollars), 4G is more. I havent found (yet) 3G model here... I wonder why those are always so expensive here and usually are also with lowest memory available. Like my N8000, it was sold only as a 16gb mem.
