Just flash it. Don't do any wipes. You never lose data flashing a kernel.

Am fairly sure that in the flash instructions of your chosen kernel it says to "dirty flash ROM" before flashing g kernel. Dirty flash won't or rather shouldn't wipe data. I've done it in past with no problems. Follow OP instructions and you'll be just fine and keep all your data.
Is it okay to flash a custom kernel on stock?
Im running stock 5.1 R3 with TWRP.

So long as its a compatible one yes its fine. Look in the dev. Sections and look at op of some kernels. Will tell you what they work on and how to flash. As your on stock ROM remember to make a backup and find and download stock kernel as if you want to change between kernels you'll need to flash the stock version before you flash new kernel.
Good luck.

I'd like to remove the trinity Kernel for JellyBean. I enjoy it's overclock but I hate it when my phone just randomly reboots. Is there a way to remove it. I have created a backup before I flashed it, but I'd like to remove it without having to restore to that backup.
Thanks
flash your rom without wiping, then flash gapps

I should have mentioned, I'm running stock. No custom rom installed
Just flash a different custom kernel or the stock kernel. If you want a different custom kernel, and you want something stockish, you wan try SimpleKernel or thalamus kernel. As for the stock, I think you can find a flashable zip somewhere here in the NS forum.
I'm wondering if I have to flash a specific Kernel before flashing custom roms ( CM specifically ). My device is P3110 running stock 4.1.2 . Any help will be much appreciated, thanks guys.
Edit: Does flashing the CM Rom zip file flash the newest CM kernel or should I flash it manually?

You never want to flash a kernel before flashing a rom because the rom will over write the kernel when it installs its own. If you want a custom kernel flash it right after flashing the rom.
All roms come with their own kernel.
Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.
Thanks

That's exactly what I needed to know, I have another android device ( Xperia mini pro ) and every time I need to install a custom rom, I have to flash its kernel first. Here it seems like flashing the rom via recovery also flashes the kernel. Thanks for the help appreciated.

The CM zip file has everything it needs. You just need to have a recovery ROM to be able to install CM from recovery. Additionally, you might want to reset various things from recovery before installing CM. Notice that if you reset the internal sdcard you will lose all your data (which might or might not be what you want).
Hi. ATM I use elemental x and I've read to switch to another kernel I have to reflash the whole ROM. what's the problem with just flashing the boot.img to get back to stock kernel and then flash another custom kernel?

As jd1639 said... Yes, flashing the stock boot.img should be just fine.
Probably easier though, you can also just dirty flash the ROM that your currently running on your N5 without wiping anything and then while still in recovery, just flash the custom kernel that you want to switch too and done.

As far as I know, just flashing the stock boot.img is usually fine, but if you take a look at franco's thread, the process to uninstall includes flashing system.img as well, since a couple of system files are modified. I don't think elementalx does though, so what you suggested will work ok.

Very true... Some kernels do modify the system and that's why I find it easier to just dirty flash the ROM that I'm currently using, since it wipes the system partition and then you don't run into issues.
Thank you.
So I'll better dirty flash to avoid unnecessary problems with a new kernel.
All user data should be save with a dirty flash, am I right?

Yeap.. Nothing will be erased.
What about if I am on stock? Should flashing the flash-base.sh (from factory image) have the same effect like a dirty flash of a custom recovery with a zip of a custom Rom? So all use data be save.

If you mean the flash-all.bat, it will erase all data! Just flash the /system and /boot images and then flash the custom kernel..
Or, you can dirty flash the stock 4.4.4 rom and then flash the custom kernel.
Edit: no. I mean the batch as I named it. It's not flash-all. But I think it only flashes radio and bootloader.
Side fact: *.bat = Windows DOS and *.sh = Linux shell

No need to flash radio as well. Flashing boot.img and system.img will do the job is you're on stock and you're guaranteed to not lose your data. I think that will only happen if you flash userdata.img
Just flash the rooted stock zip ROM.

I already made a Nandroid backup yesterday. I have been running Franco Kernel since I've had my N5, about 6 months. I want to try ElementalX, but I see notes about re-flashing ROM before flashing that kernel. I don't want to lose any of my current data, settings, or configuration. Can I not just use the FKU app to re-flash the stock kernel and then use ElementalX's aroma installer from TWRP to install that kernel? I'm on stock 4.4.4 with TWRP custom recovery installed. ElementalX looks to be a bit more popular than Linaro kernel, and I want to try the Faux sound options in it as well as Tap2Wake & Sleep2Wake.
Flashing the ROM doesn't touch your settings or data. Wiping data does. Reflash the ROM them flash the kernel. This is really basic. Please have a read of the sticky thread linked in my signature to get a basic understanding of how android devices work before flashing anything

So I have installed franco Kernel on final lollipop on my Nexus 5 and I want to flash another Kernel but it says I have to do a clean flash with stock kernel. I didnt find a .zip stock kernel for stock LRX210 and I want to know how to go back to kernel. I can flash .img but if its going to erase my data I would prefer a .zip to flash in recovery, thanks!
