What is the deal with the build.prop

someone did an .apk file that has google navagation working on my g1, but there are 3 or 4 other threads on getting navagation working on the g1. some modify the build.prop and others have batch files that mod it. So which one is really needed? does the .apk file do everything or do I need the modified build.props?
also, my apologies for not crediting by name who did what, I don't have all the links on hand.

Custom clockworkmod compatible update.zip

Hello, I would like to create my own update.zip that would be compatible with clockwork mod. I have several files in several locations that I manually copy over after new installs like multicolored bash nano iwconfig iwlist etc. And I think it would be much easier to create a installable package for that, I also delete a number of built I. Apps like tweeter amazon etc. And I have seen the scripts inside oyhers update.zip's that I could add the bash commands to remove those things as well.unfortunately I know nothing about what clockworkmod wants and I see binarys inside these zips dont know if those are customized for each zip or the same in all of them, I dont know what files or information is absolutely required. The best possible solution is if I had a blank update.zip that held all of the required files settings and all I needed to do was add my files and asd a few lines to a preexisting script to remove sum stock apps.thinking back I might have seen a file containing all the files names and md5 chucksums for each as well which if necessary I can do. Is there something like this available for download sumwhere? If not ajy resources to learn the required information and find the required binarys.thank you in advance.

Hi,
I've been trying to learn the same thing. I'm curious if you found anything useful since posting this.
Of course, if I find anything, i'll post back here too.
Thanks.
Same problem here
Good to hear someone with same problems. I want to create a generic ROM for myself and I want to use ClockworkMod to help flash it instead of using fastboot.
Well, I have found no documentation about what ClockworkMod may need for a zip file.
But I guess it could be possible to just replace them with your own by downloading an existing zip file created by someone else.
I'll try it to see if that works or not. Of course, a documentation would be better.
I regularly flash a new CM7 Nightly as they are released and I have to manually modify some things each time a new rom is flashed. I change screen density and add a notification ringtone that CM7 does not have. I wanted to automate that. Since I have to reflash the Google Apps each time anyway, I thought why not modify the gapps zip to include my changes. After searching the web I found a little info about how to do it. I just modify the zip on my computer using WinRar, copy the file to my device and re-sign the package using signapktic which is free on the market. Then flash using CWM. It worked great. No more manual adjustments. There are some instructions here which helped me:

I been getting into the kitchen

So far i`ve managed to integrate a few apps , ringtone should be easy
next the fonts from utmost rom
thanks to the kitchen, Im now running at script kiddie level

GPE on Verizon M8

Good day all,
I was able to modify a GPE ROM to work on the Verizon M8. I would love help from more knowledgeable members to maybe get this thing to take off. But I have a few questions:
1. What forum should it go in?
2. Would it be worth posting?
Working:
Boots
Bluetooth
Not Working:
Wifi
3G/4G/LTE
Thanks!
It would go into Android development, you could add WIP to the title name if you post it. Maybe some of the devs can help getting data to work, does calls/sms work?

Calls and SMS do not work. I currently have no cellular connectivity.
Ok you would add that to the not working list, how is GPS?

Love to see threads like this
For the data/cell, move over the libril* file(s) in /system/lib from our Verizon stock ROM to the GPE ROM (do one at a time) and see if that fixes the issue with data. Also may want to verify the build.prop references the appropriate RIL ffilename if different from in GPE build.prop.
For SMS/MMS, try moving the *apns* files from /system/etc on our Verizon stock rom to GPE and again see if that fixes the SMS/MMS issue. If that doesn't resolve it, it's probably buried in the framework-res.apk under /xml/. You could try extracting the contents of the Verizon framework-res.apk and simply copy over the /xml/apns.xml into the GPE framework-res.apk.
Biggest advice I can give you is only move and test 1 file at a time. Sounds Tedious but it will save you sooo much time in the long run.
Good to see you working on this

Can I pull all the files and then push them one at a time without having to restart?

Need help with stock gps.conf file

I've been using the FasterGPS app but even after reverting to the original gps.conf file, I've not been able to apply the latest OTA update because of it. Would someone be kind enough to share the stock gps.conf file?
Thanks!

[Q] Add Stock ServiceMenu.apk (*#*# 7378423#*#*) to CM?

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anyone had figured how to bring Sony's stock ServiceMenu.apk to work in CM or other custom ROMs that don't have it?
ServiceMenu (*#*# 7378423#*#* from dialer on stock ROM) is very handy for battery test, GPS test, Compass test and calibration, all the Sony device-specific hardware tests.
I tried to make a recovery-flashable zip by extracting ServiceMenu.apk from stock ROM but it doesn't install. I did more searching to find it also depends on files in /system/etc/permissions and /system/framework so I also added those to the zip, but still fails to install.
Can anyone with better experience chime in? I think a flashable Sony ServiceMenu.apk zip would be useful for every custom ROM on Sony devices.
So far I'll attach my zip which puts all the files where they should be, but App does not install. Signing problem? Odex problem? Please any ideas
