So, I'm trying to boot into download mode and I absolutely can't. It always goes into Samsung's recovery rather than download mode. Yes, I've tried the proper combination of keys -- nothing works. I bought the device refurbished if that makes any difference. Any ideas? I've looked around the internet and XDA and nothing seems to work.

Make sure your volume buttons is working, test it by increase or decrease volume. A defective power+ volume Flex PCB can be replaced easily.
Power + Volume Down ( next to Power button)= Download Mode
Power + Volume Up = Recovery Mode.

Mines 1007. I think it means 3 button download mode will not work on mine. 1010 does work, tho. It looks like Best Buy sold me a old build of this phone last month, dang it.

Mine is 1007 also. Never had issues getting into recovery using the 3 button combo or download mode using the 2 button combo. My GPS works well enough for a phone. I never expected the GPS to work as well as a standalone devices.
i have 1007 and it is an early build as i purchased mine on 6/15.
But that is not necessarily bad. While my GPS isn't perfect i have had alot less problems than many. Have always had solid locks and lock times but tracking was heavily flawed (but now near excellent in chronos rom).
Plus the download mode should work with your phone and our model is supposed to be the hardest model to brick.
For Download mode it may help give you a visual if you have it plugged in (to see the charging battery on the screen).
IMPORTANT
1. Hold BOTH the up and down volume at the SAME time.
2. While still holding them down push and hold the power button.
3. Pretty quickly you will see the charge battery disappear and screen go black. KEEP HOLDING ALL 3 Buttons.
4. The Charge battery will come back on the screen for 6-10 seconds or so when the screen goes black for the 2nd time release just the volume buttons and continue holding down the power button.
*Take care not to release even the slightest pressure from the power button when releasing the volume buttons (easy to do without realizing it) or it could interrupt process and fail to enter download mode*
Batch 1008's are the ones that have botched button combos. Not 1007's. Those are fine, 3-button should work unless you've tampered with your sbl.bin.
Mines 1007 and I haven't had any problems using the 3 button mode successfully. My GPS has always worked, though I haven't asked it to pinpoint me to within 2 meters of where I am.

This seems a little more complicated than what I've always done.
Download mode for me is as simple as:
1. Power off the phone
2. Only hold down the volume buttons
3. Plug in the USB cord while holding down the volume buttons
4. The phone should automatically turn on and go into download mode

But the button only method is simpler if you don't have a USB cable handy.
I tested the 3 button mode and it went into a command line after the att world phone screen. Is that the download mode thingy? I believe the 3 button combo works. Its odd that some other have problems with that and were forced to do a jig fix.
I think the gps works on mine but sometimes its not very accurate lock. It sometimes goes on for no reason, too. I had to turn off the gps until the further notice.

But why would you put your phone into download mode without a usb cable around?
Maybe flash the rom via ext. Sd card instead of usb cable from a computer?

3 button method only gets recovery mode.
I use ADB to get into download mode.
I have not tries a USB jig.

3 button takes me to download mode.
TG for Odin.
Edit: GPS has had more bad days than good by a huge margin.
1006-Got it on launch day. Both the 3 button combo and download mode work normally on it.
So I probably went in recovery mode, not download mode? I guess there are two different modes, hmmm.

yes download mode is very striking
Yellow Triangle and a Guy with a shovel digging inside of it.
Recovery mode will just be a listing of text options
1006 - Got it 2 days before launch day. GPS is decent but not as good as it should be. Download and Recovery modes both work fine.
I haven't done anything with my phone yet other than update to Gingerbread, but I am curious about when the phone is in APX flash mode. Why do most of the tutorials tell you to keep holding the volume keys during the entire flash procedure? I had a phone with a similar low-level hardware flashing mode and as soon as it connected to the computer I could let go of the volume keys. I have seen a few youtube videos where people did not hold the volume keys and everything seemed to work. Was this just an urban legend that has taken hold in the G2X dev community, or will the phone disconnect from the computer if you let go of the volume keys? There seems to be no reason why once the phone is connected in APX mode you would need to continue to hold the volume keys. Has anyone in this forum flashed CWM or anything else in APX mode without holding the volume keys during the entire flash procedure?
Hmm not sure. I know with NVflash if i dont hold the keys the entire time, the bootloader fails to initialize. Maybe that is why?

So if you are doing a larger flash, like the OS restore, once the bootloader initializes you can probably let go of the keys? On my other phone it was an even lower level flash and the bootloader wasn't invoked, so that probably explains the difference.
I make sure nVflash, then I hold down the volume keys, and plug my phone into my computer. Once I hear the sound verifying that my phone has connected, I let go. It flashes fine for me.

Do you mean Odin didn't see your phone? Are you in download mode? What do you see on the screen right now? Sometimes I have to try different USB ports and close/re-open Odin for it to finally see my phone.

I'm trying to picture this in my head so humor me and try this.
Unplug USB cable from phone and PC.
Plug USB cable into PC ONLY.
Take battery out of your phone (by the way, your phone will go into download mode without the battery in. I've done it).
While holding down both volume buttons, plug USB cable into your phone. Continue holding. Eventually you should see the download mode confirmation where it says volume up to continue and volume down to cancel.
Release both volume buttons.
Put your battery back in
Press volume up to continue to download mode.
If you follow these steps and the phone goes into a black screen with a phone, a right arrow and a PC, that is the "I'm messed up so you need to fix me now" download mode, but it is download mode nonetheless and Odin will recognize that mode.
Let me know how that turns out.

Looks like maybe a few things
1. Battery may be completely Dead, leave it plugged in for awhile and see if your able to do anything.
2. When doing recovery are you releasing the buttons when the Samsung logo shows? Same with download mode, also looked like you may have been holding the power when trying DL mode.

Watched your video. I don't have headphones at work today so I have no sound but I get the gist of what you're doing. I noticed at the very end you were only using one finger to hold down both the volume up AND the volume down keys. Is it possible that your finger is slipping off and only one is being pressed by the time you plugged in your USB cable? The phone is reacting as if both buttons are not being held down at the same time. Again, just an observation
The important part is that you need to hold down both volume buttons at the same time while you plug in the USB cable. Also it's worth mentioning that the only buttons you're supposed to be holding are the volume buttons. So do not hold the power button at any point during the process of putting it into download mode. The phone didn't react as if you were holding the power button but I wanted to mention it anyway.
Tried your advises and nothing happens... ((
Hi folks. I've got a problem that I don't see anything quite matching in here. I have a Straight Talk/Verizon GS7. Last night I installed an app do to USB tethering on it. It worked great for the testing. After I disconnected and it sat idle for a while, I heard a notification sound and the blue light started flashing. I push the home key and the "back" and "window" key lit up, but the screen is black.
So here's what I've tried so far.
I tried to hold the power button to turn the phone off. Nothing.
I can soft reset by holding volume down and power. I get the splash screens for GS7, Samsung and TracFone. Then BSOD.
I can't get safe mode. I can't get recovery mode.
I can get to download mode. "Volume down, home, power"
The phone has developer tools turned on and USB debugging is enabled. Is there a way to do anything helpful from download mode? I'm not too concerned about losing data, so flashing a new ROM is fine by me.

hi
Seem like flashing a new firmware may be the reasonable option...
Try flashing first with home_csc if you know what your CSC is at the moment..that way you may avoid losing your data
if that option is off the table...then use CSC and flash/ format your phone...

Pay attention to step 6 if you use CSC
Thank you for the response. While I was downloading the ROM I came across "Vysor" and was able to use it to control the phone. Hi, I have a One Plus 8T that won't turn on, won't charge, won't get into recovery mode, the screen remains black, won't vibrate on changing ringing mode either and gets recognized as QUSB_BULK_CID:xxxx_SN:xxxxxxxx when connected to the laptop. Phone was in my hand and in a perfectly good condition when it happened. I tried all the physical keys and their combinations many times. Is there any solution to this?

You're in EDL mode. Hold power button and volume up button until it reboots. Then see where you are. However, you may need to use this tool to flash back to stock - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...l-to-restore-your-device-to-oxygenos.4180837/

one thing i want to add here is when phone is conected to a laptop and i press Vol Up + Power key, i hear a beep on laptop (may be it does the reboot) but screen remains black. I dont think the issue is with the disoplay.
Then you will need to use the msm tool. Your phone seems to boot into EDL mode just fine. Follow the instructions in that link.
