Devices and Apps for Photo Editing - General Questions and Answers

Hi Guys,
I'm delighted to be a member of the Forums, and am very keen to ask you guys a few questions. Do any of you use smartphones for digital image editing, if so what is the best phone, software, OS, etc?

To use smartphones for digital image editing? Do you think its display is small?

Well first of all for any major editing I find phones are no good for it. Small screen bad controls etc. But for small edits you could use a app like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iudesk.android.photo.editor or something else like it.

I don't use my phone for imaging editing. My main camera is a Canon EOS70D. Which means I require Camera Raw and the real version of Photoshop. Not to mention that my RAW files are 500MB each...
But for regular pictures taken on a phone, there's no app better than Snapseed. Google bought NIKsoftware, the company behind the extremely popular (Amongst professionals) Photoshop plugin NIKefex. Then made a free version of it for Android.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed
It's not an Instagram-like app, but rather a more professional tool; you have to do all the tweaking (light, blur, colourbalance, saturation, etc) yourself.
As for which device, I recommend something with a big screen and high-end hardware. You'll need a MicroSD slot as well if you're going to juggle larger files.
The 5.7" high-end Note 4 is an excellent option. The Spen is an additional bonus to the big screen, because it allows much more precision and control when editing. Very good canera, too.
Or the 6" Nexus 6 if you don't need a MicroSD. Bigger screen, vanilla Android, good specs.

Smartphone/PDA camera to photograph documents

Is there a smartphone or PDA with a camera that would allow photographing of pages of books, or parts of pages? The image needs to be good enough so that once I pull it up on my desktop, I'd be able to run OCR on it. What I really need is a contemporary version of this:

I played around with a Nokia E90 in macro mode, but ended up getting either fuzzy full-page images or very small parts of the page in focus.
Anybody have any ideas? There must be someone else out there doing exactly this.

the camera on the tilt and i think any phone with auto focus and a enough enough resolution 3MP+ should get u going.
I second the Tilt. Without the cover http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=339. The camera is extremely good.
The issue of lighting and making sure the page is completely flat remains however.

Go to Check My Camera Phone and check the scores. Of the HTC models listed, the X7500 scores the highest. (My personal favorite non-smartphone, the i-mobile 902, has the highest of them all but that's hardly surprising as it contains a real Sony 5 MP CCD camera module.)

Android: Dearth of full-fledged productivity suites...

I got my G Tablet last week and replaced the stock ROM with Cyanogenmod 7. For the most part, it's elicited more oo's and aah's and wow's from me than cursing, but there are some aspects of the Android "app environment" (or whatever you'd call it) that really bug me.
One of the big reasons I bought this was to do light productivity on the go. However, apparently my definition of "light" is far more heavy-duty than app developers' definition of "light." I simply cannot believe that there is no app which lets you edit Word documents in "Print Layout" view, so it's not really possible to know what the actual formatting will be like in the end.
To edit Powerpoint presentations I've only tried Documents-to-Go prof., but I'm flumoxed that it doesn't let you edit the text in the slide itself, but sends you to a different screen that displays the text only. I'm in the sciences, so I suppose I make very complex PPT slides compared to most people, and I need to be able to dynamically alter things and see what they look like while I'm editting them. Yes, I realize now that PPT editing is relatively new across productivity suites for the Android, but I'm still very disappointed.
Anyone care to make an educated guess about the future of Android productivity? Especially since I can get a case with a built-in keyboard I was having high hopes for my Android tablet, but it looks like my dream office app is just not available.
Sweet.

Tablet & Phone Photography Advice.

Folks,
I've been a photographer for many years, and have noticed the availability of a great number of "Photo Editors" for Android devices. However, except for quick down and dirty edits or fixes, do not expect much from these apps, as they simply cannot perform like a true PC Photo Editor.
My suggestions for real photo editing are as follows:
1) If you can afford it, and have the time to learn it, nothing beats Photoshop.
2) If that is too expensive, try Lightroom or even Photoshop Elements, as they have many of the Photoshop functions at a much lower price.
3) If those are still too expensive, try Cyberlink PhotoDirector 5, as it appears to be somewhat of an emulation of Lightroom at a lower price.
4) Another program I have used is Ashampoo Photo Commander 11, which is also quite capable of producing good results.
There are many more photo editing programs out there, but the bottom line is, if you want the best results, do your editing on a good PC with a good program.
Good Luck.

Best note taking app?

I want to write notes for subjects using my NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1, but I don't know which note taking app to use :/ I have DirectStylus 2 btw
The Squid app is OK, but handwriting looks worse with it, and you NEED to pay for it pretty much. I want stuff backed up.
Bamboo paper seems cool, nice none intrusive ui and free backing up. Seems like there's enough features for free
There's so many note taking apps, and I need full commitment to just one. Also any tips for me, like the best way to hold/use the stylus would be cool
I can fully recommend Lecture Notes: PlayStore
There are plenty of settings to adjust the app. I really liked to use it and it is definitively worth the money. Also you can set, that you can scroll in the notebook with your finger and write with the pen. PDF-Import possible and so on. Just take a look at the trial version
I've been using FiiNotes
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fiistudio.fiinote
Very flexible
Keyboard support
Handwrite support
Cloud Sync ( free and premium accounts)
Multiple platform ( Android, Win, Mac and maybe iOS)
Kinda like a slightly more complex and capable Evernote meets lecture notes. Note there is a slight learning curve to get the most out of the app and platform, but I feel it was well worth it
I've been using it for 3 years, not perfect but very happy with the features and capabilities of the suite
