Replacement M8: Keeps prompting me to upgrade to 5.0 - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Is there anyway to get this to stop? I don't want to upgrade since FoxFi wifi gets disabled in Lollipop.

Wifi Teathering

I'm super excited to get the TB today. I'm even more excited to see if we're going to be able to "unlock" free wifi teathering.
Do any of you see any reasons why someone won't be able to figure this out?

Wow, it's that easy?!
I've only used it when a ROM enabled it through the Wireless Settings menu. I didn't realize you can just install an app.
Thanks!

Did 2.3.5 cripple your tether?

I posted this in two other threads but both got ignored.
As soon as I updated to the 2.3.5, tethering seems to be no longer supported. The option is there, but as soon as I activate the tether, 3G goes away. I have to turn off the tether, then manually switch mobile data off and on just for my 3G to come back.
Is this their way of getting people to finally pay for it?
Yes.. one of the features of the update was removing tether if you were not paying for it. No biggie though... you have a Nexus.. just unlock it and download one of the apps off the market.

Since my phone had none of the reception issues this update was supposed to fix & reading alot of posts saying that it really didn't do much for those issues, I think I'll skip the update prompts & keep my free tethering.

yes wifi tether 3.0 pre 14 works with infrastructure i believe
Are we sure they removed tether and didn't just break it? Is it in the release notes somewhere?
Mine works fine with newest update
Mine is broken too, wifi tether works fine as always

I would initially agree, but the speakerphone update is so much better than in 2.3.4 . I use speakerphone way more frequently than tethering..
i never used the native tethering anyway

So you have the 2.3.5 update and no root and can use the stock wifi tether still?

I am a little confused why Google allowed sprint to do this. Whether you you use the tether or not and regardless of how easy it is to get it back it doesn't sit well with me that Sprint is calling the shots with this phone now. One of the major appeals of this phone is the pure Google experience, which is now the partial Google experience. I wonder if this had anything to do with the delay of the OTA, maybe sprint was holding out until google let them kill the tether? Anyways, it doesn't instill a great amount of confidence in google for this phone and future nexus devices. I still like the phone and there is nothing on sprint I would rather have, I'm just a little pissed at how they tucked this into an update that was much anticipated and stripped some of our "pure googleness".
I don't understand this...i dont pay anything extra for tether, and i can still tether on stock 2.3.5. Why are some people unable?
i just flashed the new KE5 radio(found in the ns4g dev section), and im not seeing any issues. still on 2.3.4 tho.. i dont see any reasons to update to 2.3.5 especially if this is a problem. i tether wayyyy too much.

So I have a two day new Nexus S and I did the manual update last night. Now when activating the mobile hotspot the 3g or 4g icons go away and it does not have connectivity anymore.
Now, I have read conflicting info about whether this is happening just to those who did the manual update and if you did OTA it still works. Can anyone confirm this?
If that is the case, then I need to return this one and get another and just be more patient next time to get the update officially OTA. =)
Not that I am tremendously worried about the tethering/hotspot being free, but I am uneasy that doing this manually may have screwed things up in as of yet other unknown ways. Like if I do pay for hotspot/tethering someday it might still not work right, etc.
Thanks!

Did you manually update or did you wait for it to be pushed to your phone? I'm stock and wasn't rooted and I manually updated and my tethering both usb and wifi hotspots are not working.
Also I notice in the kernel version that it's longer than when I was on 2.3.4 mine says 2.6.35.7-g3cc95e3 [email protected] #1
Is that normal?

No root tethering on Jelly Bean

I'm on unlimited data, and I tether once in a while. If I update to Jelly Bean, is there an app that will work without rooting? I am currently using FoxFi. I've been researching, and I can't find a good answer. I tether to an iPad, so looking for wifi. Thanks for any help.

From what I've read there is currently no app that tethers without root on 4.1 and later.
If you choose to allow the OTA, I'm told you will not be able to root or tether until someone unlocks each. It could be a little while until someone figures out the new bootloader or whatever 4.1 has for verizon phones.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, and if anyone out there can disprove me, I welcome it.
Thanks for the reply.

Do you mean you aren't rooted, have the OTA JB update, and can still use FoxFi?
It's broken for me now. The mobile hotspot app comes up and basically kills the connection.

I took the OTA update and verified that FoxFi still worked prior to rooting.
Do you have version 1.95 from Nov 20?
You can use the free version of FoxFi to test with to verify that it will work for you before purchasing the paid version.

I have v 1.95.3 of FoxFi. So, after testing again FoxFi does still work, but the mobile hotspot thing turns on (I didn't close it this time). From reading various discussions around the web, everyone is saying they haven't been billed/charged for this, and they haven't been forced to agree to Verizon's hotspot plan. Still, it's very nerve wracking because I could easily see Verizon "finding out" and charging people.
I'm at a crossroads here. I'm deciding whether to root, go back to stock ICS (I don't know how to do this), or take the risk and stick with stock JB.

Not legal for them to charge you for a non VZW app usage per FCC court case if your on a tiered limited data plan.

I'm on unlimited data. So, they could charge me then?
Gosh, why is it always so complicated with these carriers?
Unfortunately, thats the gamble you take with the unlimited plan..... they have to catch ya first though.
For me tethering is an "emergency" type thing, or a backup. Not something I'll do HD streaming on or anything.
But I'm guessing that before or after JB, the risk for being "caught" and the things that tipped VZ off were the same? I'm just curious how the "Mobile Hotspot" thing factors in now.

[Q] Thoughts on whether this will work on OTA 4.3 saferooted S3?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2456338
What do you think? Seems like a simple way to get the native hotspot going for those of us that were dumb enough to accept the 4.3 OTA but smart enough to hold on to our unlimited plans.
I have looked around to find workarounds for this but they were either WAY to technical for my puny brain or they were so dated it could be assumed they did not apply to the latest OTA or they specifically said they did not apply to the latest OTA.
Thanks!!

My suggestion is just use foxfi or wifi tether router app. Clean, simple and safe!

I have heard several places the Foxfi stopped working for people once they took the latest knoxified OTA. As far as the wifi tether router app, which one would you suggest. I have tried several with no luck. 'wifi tether router' in play search comes up with a first hit of one by Fabio Grasso for $1.95. Kinda reluctant to pay up until I have pretty good reason to believe it will work. On the other hand we are talking about $1.75. Hmmm ...

Foxfi did not work when 4.3 OTA released, but the dev had upgraded the software and it work fine now. Currently I'm using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter , simply it's has a clean UI, quick and simple.

Quick question about Tethering...

I am looking into this phone but I need to know if this app will work: Wifi Tether Router.
If anyone has tried it on the Mate 9 I would appreciate your feedback.
Edit: I finally got the phone. I rooted it and it works just fine

Are you rooted? Still think it requires root to work. I used to use this app on various Android phones w/ Sprint as my carrier, but have since switched to AT&T (never looked back, BTW) and AT&T allows native tethering to work on my stock, unrooted M9 flawlessly.
