I'm wondering if I can expect a backup using Titanium Backup (backing up all user apps + system data) on my existing phone running Android 2.2.2 to be properly restored when it comes back from a factory repair running a newer OS. Will my apps and data really work properly if they update my OS? I'd rather go this route than using a root backup type backup because I'd like to get the OS upgrade. Or is there an easier way to get an OS upgrade while keeping all my apps?
I am using Titanium Backup on my rooted device.
I am afraid this app and other backup-apps are only able to backup and restore user, or pre-installed applications that are not part of the OS.
You cannot backup or restore any system data without rooting the device first, because accessing system data requires root access. The same is true for restoring the data later on.
So if you want to backup system data, preferences or a whole system backup (NANDbackup), you'll have to get root first!
Good luck:fingers-crossed:

Yes this will work as you said you backed up system apps instead is in my experience sometimes when you restore apps and data through titanium it sometime makes apps a little wonky like force closing and such. I would go for it worse case scenario is you notice apps acting up, do a factory reset if unrooted or wipe and reinstall rom if rooted and then when you restore with titanium press the option to restore app only then a least you don't have redownload apps from the market

I have ICS Stock on System 1 and had installed AOSPA based PA 3.15 on system 3. Everything was running fine when I found that I had kept too small space for the data partition in system 3. I took a full backup via BMM, destroyed data partition and created a larger one. Then I restored from backup. When I booted back to system 3, I found that the apps are showing as not installed. The icons and shortcuts on home screen are there though. Can anyone please help me out? :crying:

Hello All,
I had the dreaded System Data too large problem....it took up 1.2G of my 1.5G data partition and I could no longer install or update any new apps. This is what I did to fix it: 1) Performed a Nandroid Backup, 2) Used a root capable file explorer (Yaffs in my case) and deleted all files from my dalvik cache (/data/dalvik-cache), 3) Rebooted the phone, but it was not working properly afterwards, so I restored the previous nandroid backup. After restoring the backup, the System data was only 30MB and the phone is working fine. It seems as though over time the dalvik cache fills up with junk from all apps you have installed/uninstalled/earlier versions, etc., so its a good idea to flush it periodically. I looked for many hours trying to find a solution to this and this it what worked for me.
Best,
Jon

Hi,
Since one or two months I have noticed that my TWRP backups were taking a lot of space (More than 3 Gb), my old backups with all my apps installed were around 1,5Gb and 2Gb.
Yesterday I did a factory reset to installa Lollipop, just after installing it the size of the data partition was right (Very small, no apps installed). I just reinstalled all my apps and the size grow again, how can I check my files in the data partition? I don't have ANY game installed, I had FIFA 15 before factory resetting, but I didn't reinstall it. Another factor could be Play Music All Access.
Can someone please help me?
Best regards.

Cannot open the system data subfolder.
Finally could use that program, looks like now with android lollipop using ART, the size of the data partition is a lot big!
TWRP should exclude the art cache when backing up..
Hello everyone.
I unlocked the bootloader, installed the custom firmware, but did not like it, then I went back to the stock.
Now the storage section shows the correct amount of memory, but the application section takes 15 gb. System applications occupy 240 mb each. Clearing application data does not help, as does factory reset. Other installed apps looks normal.

You could try to perform a full wipe and reinstall the stock ROM afterwards. Full wipe means including wipe /cache, /data, and also /system. Maybe the /system partition still is full of rubbish from the previous ROM. Hope this helps.
same thing happened to me also...i had to reflash stock and once i set up i just factory reset...system apps are back to regular size
