Hi there,
I am wondering what's up with the incremental update model adopted by OnePlus. I would appreciate if anybody would explain and this would be helpful for others having the same or similar questions.
Here is the scenario:
I received the phone with 22R version of the ROM. Since then I did not install the updates.
Under the Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates, it is always showing the 25R as the available update and not the latest.
When I raised a ticket with the OnePlus team regarding why the latest version is not being shown, here below is the response I received:
Have you already tried a Hard reset on your device? If not, here's how to do it:
1. Back up all your important files and information, as the process will erase all data
2. Shut down the phone, and turn it back on while holding the Volume Down button until you feel it vibrate
3. Once in Simple Recovery, select "wipe cache partition" and swipe to the right or press the power button
4. When you get the "Cache wipe complete" message, continue and select "wipe data / factory reset" to fully reinitialize your ROM

However, I do not quite understand why I would need a hard reset of the phone to see the latest updates. Anyway, my questions are as below:
1. What is this incremental update model is all about?
2. Is it that we cannot update to the latest version unless we go through all the incremental updates?
3. In one of the posts about updating to 38R version (latest as of this writing) needs to be done on top of 33R only.
4. What would happen if we update from 22R to 38R?
Any answers that would give an insight are appreciated.
Thanks.
This is standard procedure. This is how most phone companies roll out their updates usually. This is how OTA updates work.
An OTA update is not a complete system, it's a patch that needs to be applied to the correct preceding build. That's why they need to be taken in the correct order. I don't see what your problem is though, just take the updates in order and you'll be fine.

I understand it is a standard procedure, but I have not seen that the latest update would only be shown after all the previous updates taken. It does not make sense.
Let's say there are ten incremental updates have come and the user would want to update the tenth version (assuming that the user had not taken previous update releases).. then he would not need to go through the hassle of updating all the previous update releases to take up the latest.
From your explanation, does it means he has to update the phone ten times?
On the other hand, in the case of OnePlus One, what would happen if the user want to update from 22R to 38R?

A user cannot update from XNPH22R to XNPH38R. There is no 22R to 38R. All of them are incremental updates.
XNPH22R -> XNPH25R -> XNPH30O -> XNPH33R -> XNPH38R.
If you hate doing all the updates then simply flash the fastboot images that'll get you to XNPH38R. But at the time 38R factory images aren't out yet, they will be soon. Latest factory image is 33R.
But I agree, OnePlus should be shipping the new devices with at least XNPH33R.

I think you're failing to understand how updates work. It makes perfect sense. Yes, the user needs to update ten times because they are patches that build on top of very specific already existing firmware. You can't install 38R on top of anything but 33R.

You're not seeing the update because not everyone gets it at the same time, it's a staggered roll out.

This is normal, if you think this is unbearable. Do a clean install of windows seven right now. You will be getting patches after patches.
Nothing new

Hi folks,
I received the OTA update notification for Android 5 yesterday, downloaded it and while installing it - I received an error and the device restarted to normal Android mode (Kitkat 4.4.4 - Nexus 5). I dont know what went wrong, the OTA notification is gone now. And I tried many times for updating the device via OTA, but there is no update information.
Wanted to know the following things:
1. Does any one had similar problems like this?
2. What really went wrong?
3. Will I get the OTA update or should I follow any of the manual method?
PS: Device Used : Nexus 5 - running Kitkat 4.4.4 - Rooted via TowelRoot - Stock ROM
If you feel I miss any major inputs, please do comment, so I can add it.
TIA Have a Great day !!
If it failed chances are you've made a change to a system app/file which is why it's failing. You have to be 100% stock to successfully apply an OTA update
Thanks for the quick response !!

Does unroot help in here? How about unroot and factory reset?
Will I get the OTA anyway?

Hi everyone!
I've just received and successfully installed a system update for Android 5.1.1 and it says exactly zero about itself. Even Android's version hasn't changed.
Does anyone have any idea what it fixes? I surmise it fixes two recent holes but 10MB sounds a little too much for that.
I also got but nothing happened
Sent from my Nexus 5
I got it, I'm updating manually since for some reason my phone never wants to update the regular way.
It addresses the Stagefright vulnerability
How can I apply this update manually?
It doesn't apply automatically - there are no errors, nothing. I've rebooted my phone three times already and it wants to install it again.

flash it through ADB
I use this thread as reference just to make sure I don't miss any step but there are a few others threads like this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guide-update-rooted-device-to-5-1-lmy47d-t3050789
OTA install error
I got the OTA notification to download & install the Stagefright patch. Every time I try to install it, it says "error!" shortly after it starts to install and shows the android with a red exclamation point.
My nexus 5 is stock & unrooted.
Any idea what's causing this and how to force the install? If not, I can sideload OTA with ADB later tonight.
Thanks!
I think the build number should have changed to LMY48I.

Brazilian Moto G XT1033, bootloader unlocked, actually using Stock ROM 5.0.2 with Stock Recovery
Hello guys
Well, I was with rooted Stock 5.0.2 ROM 2 days ago, when it notified me that was an update available, so I know that I can't update by OTA with a rooted phone.
I wiped system/cache/dalvik and installed Stock ROM 4.4.4 by ADB+mfastboot for remove the root and be able to update normally.
When the cell started, I updated the "Motorola update service" in Play Store and searched for new updates (Settings > About phone > System updates). A few seconds and it returned the following message: "Check for update was not available at this time. Try again later.".
So, I downloaded the Stock ROM 5.0.2 and installed it by the same way (Wipe > Install by ADB/mfastboot) hoping that it will solve my problem... But it didn't ;(
I did some factory resets, some cache wipes etc and nothing worked for me.
I also installed the stock 5.0.2 recovery again as I saw in a forum topic, but still didn't work.
It is everything right with my phone and network connections.
This message keeps popping up, and I can not update.
Can anyone please help me? Thanks
(Sorry if I had a bad english, still learning...).
@Thales Lima : 1: keep patient, will have update after 1 day or more. If it said: system up to date=> cant update
2: you can download OTA zip file for xt1033, copy to phone( not put in any folder), and check update,it will update manually. Its ok like auto update.
Thanks for replying, thuybang!
I will be patient and wait and see if was a motorola's update server error
And... Where can I find the XT1033 5.1 ROM (zip file) for download?
OTA zip file update 5.1( not ROM 5.1). https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_JZx92EYN28YUJyT0JmNlJqRWM/view
After download, u change name to : 221.21.56 ( only number), and put in phone...
Whoooa, where did you find it? ^^
Thank you a lot!
------------ EDIT -------------
I pushed the zip file right named to my SD Card (none folder), and looked again for updates, and it returned the same message (Check for update was not available at this time. Try again later.). Can I update using a Custom Recovery > Install ZIP??
------------ EDIT -------------
The first download was corrupted, I guess... I downloaded it again and now I'm with 5.1 installed ^^ (I installed using the method mentioned by you, thuybang)
Buuut... I still can't connect to the update server and check for new updates ;(
If a new update come available for XT1033, I won't get it =/
No,u have to use stock recovery. When u check update,if it not work, go to recovery, choose: apply update from SD card, hope it work.

Alright, but... Even when I knew that there was some updates available (when I was with 4.4.4), it returned the same message (that hell message saying that couldn't connect to the update server). But it's alright, when comes a new update available I'm gonna install it manually.
Thank you again, thuybang ^^

Whooa! I think that it really was an update server's fail, now it's normal '-'

Hi,
My Xiaomi 12 still hasn't gotten an new update and is stuck on MIUI 13.0.27.0( SLCEUXM) with security patch of oktober 2022.
I would like to get to the latest miui 14 and would like to know what is the best way to manually update this safely with a original ROM?
Should I do this incrementally start at MIUI 13.2.6.0 and then go to the next till I get to the latest or can I just update to the latest MIUI 14 directly?
Tnx
Gradually is the safest method.
Skipped the Beta stables.

Thank you for the quick response.
I downloaded the MIUI downloader app are those ROMS good to?
I need to choose for a recovery ROM and then I can install it with the updater app right? So starting with version MIUI 13.2.6.0 would be the safest?
Downloaded from the site I told you, if the downloaded choice 'incremental update in yellow'.
Then go to OTA, 3 points at the top right, install update (if this does not appear, tap the Miui logo several times).
If it works, try OTA first.

You mean this one right?
It says it's only around 80mb is that correct?
When it's for a update from Android 12 to Android 13.
Error on my part, take the full rom.
it's the first A13 before yours.
If that doesn't work, download the incremental update of the current rom and then check if an update is offered.

So I tried to install the stable recovery ROM MIUI 13.2.6.0.TLCEUXM but it didn't work I keep getting this message "can't verify update can't flash this stable rom"
Then I tried a newer version recovery ROM MIUI 14.0.5.0.TLCEUXM but same message.
Also tried your suggestion to use the incremental update of the current ROM V13.0.27.0 but then I got the message "can't verify update can't downgrade ROM version"
Do you have any other ideas on how to fix this problem?
Try to change region (Belgium/Usa/change continent/country) and restart afterwards.
Then turn on WiFi and check for updates.
====================================
or unlock the bootloader and you can install any stock or custom rom.

Tried changing the continent/country and turn wifi back on after restart but no updates were found.
I really didn't want to try messing with the bootloader because of the warranty. I also read somewhere Google play services and bank apps not working when its unlocked.
Anything more I could try without unlocking?

Nope, you can re-lock the bootloader after installing the stock rom.
No need with a Xiaomi Eu rom (certified play store, everything works).

Only thing I haven't tried, is using the incremental update of that version V13.2.6.0 because it was only 80 mb. If I try this update and it works will it then download the ROM information on it's own or something?

Nope,only solution unlock the bootloader.
Just to be sure I downloaded the 2 latest versions that I hadn't tried yet.
The recovery ROM of version MIUI 14.0.7.0.TLCEUXM and 14.0.8.0.TLCEUXM.
And they both seem to work
Since I'm still on Android 12 now and missed so many updates in-between these 2 latest versions. Would it be safe to install one of these?
Doesn't matter, it will work or not.
Note that if you have a bootloop afterwards, with the bootloader locked you will have to pay to recover your phone (this sometimes happens).

Never at 100% with forcing.
EDIT:moreover, even regular updates via OTA can lead to a bootloop.

So it's just a risk of updating no matter what version I use. I never had a boot loop before.

Zero risk does not exist and this risk increases when you force the update by skipping versions.

Oke, yeah I wanted to do it step by step till I got to the latest miui 14 and still don't get why the older versions don't work.
The only older version I could find that also worked was version V13.0.33.0.SLCEUXM but can't find much about that update.
