[Q] Massive freezes and hangs on Lolipop. - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm experiencing huge lag in certain parts of my tablet. I managed to get most working again after flashing every img (rom, boot, recovery etc.) to the device upgrading it the latest version. But there is still lag at certain times. Most of the device runs fine except when: coming out of a deep sleep. The entire tablet lags for about 5 minutes. Opening and using Chrome. Once open the lag stops but random hangs occur mainly when typing. It also hangs for about 10 sec when highlighting things. It makes it almost impossible to highlight anything because it constantly freezes. Does anyon know what might be causing this lag and how I can fix it? My tablet is on the stock rom at the latest version and is rooted. It also has TWRP.
EDIT: it also sometimes doesn't even come out of deep sleep at all. It just doesn't turn the screen on no matter how many times I press or hold the button. I just have to force restart it.

There are many threads about this type of behaviour in our devices, so I'm sure a quick search will give you more information than I can. Have you tried any custom ROMs at all, or do you require the stock controller compatibility? From personal experience, it's not the hardware's problem. Moving away from stock was a huge improvement, although I never personally ran into the kind of laggy behaviour you've described, only occasionally dead screen on stock.
I wonder, since you're still on stock, could you set the auto-shutdown timer to something like 24h and see if that helps your deep sleep lock issue? Before moving to custom ROMs, I've tried that on my stock 2.2.1 and never had an issue with the screen getting stuck.

The screen getting stuck is only something that happens after not using it for an hour or so. Isn't that when android goes into a sort of deep sleep to save battery? I've never tried custom rom on this tablet (but I have had a few and am currently using cm11 of my note 3) because I don't want to lose the features that nvidia adds such as the recording and game stream etc. Unless that is ported to the uno cm 12.(i prefer cm over anything else usually.) also don't want to have to wait for mod developers to add the latest updates from nvidia.

I don't know about screen recording/streaming to twitch directly, but the nvidia hub does appear to work just fine.
As for the black screen issue, I'm no expert but I've come across this kind of stuff while overclocking. Black screens and system hangs are usually some combination of improper voltage control and frequency. If the deep sleep state is hanging, I'd try a custom kernel so you can control the voltage and frequency table yourself. Maybe tweaking those could help you stay stock without the dead screen issue.
Have you tried limiting the background processes (developer options) to 4? Might help with the laggy behaviour. Also, if you come across any helpful info in your searches, feel free to link to those here; I'm sure people would like to know =)

I dont mean streaming to twitch I mean local streaming from my PC. I also fixed chrome by increasing the ram from 64 to 512. I also clearred the dalvik cache and it seems to be running a bit better but Ill have to investigate further. Also had a few random reboots after wiping dalvik cache

Random Reboots now
Most of the freezing is gone now that i have wiped the Dalvik Cache. Even the problem of it not coming out of deep sleep properly. But now its randomly rebooting at least once or sometimes twice an hour. What's causing this problem now?

I know this thread is getting stale, but essentially I just want a rom that keeps updated with the latest version of android, but also keeps nVidia's features. That's the reason I chose this tablet over the Nexus 9. That's why I like CM, but the nVidia features are holding me back and i'm tearing my hair out with the lag.

Use the full ota zip from nvidia, I recommend using cwm to flash but it can be done adb as well. Your issues are coming from the update itself. It's like dirty flashing. I had the same things as u. Went into recovery (cwm) wiped boot system data and cache and dalvik cache, flashed the official FULL OTA ZIP. boom just fine again on lp. Though it's still slow as hell compared to bliss rom with BitO kernel. Just no console mode or support for nvidia controllers. Personally I use an ipega 9023 controller, I always thought 60 bux for a controller that doesn't hold onto my tablet useless. Twitch, casting, all that is better on custom rom. Games really fly. Nvidia really messed up on stock. Maybe ota 4 will fix it lol

Thats exactly what I did. My tablet came with version 2.0 (Lolipop 5.0) and I was told by the guy who wrote the post with all the stock roms, to flash all the partitions using the download. I did that and the tablet was a lot better then before, but still extremely laggy and freezing. I also have to always have it on high performance otherwise its unusable.

Guys I'm sorry, I don't really have answers about how the freezes and stuff can be fixed on Lollipop but if there's a rom running better I'm willing to try it I think. Can I ask you something? Does DirectStylus work right on non-stock roms? And if yes, please suggest me some roms that worked nicely for you ^_^

I just had to abuse myself for a week, on straight stock, no root. The shield was unusable. It just pissed me off all the time. Couldn't even get it to write to external SD. At all. Finally achieved root with kingroot (I don't have a pc) and flashed back to custom. I'm not sure how this device even sold. Other than the name (that's why I got it tbt) I'm an nvidia fan for over 18 years. But the stock shield is an afront to my good sensibilities! I may have invented a couple new 4 letter words. Lol
Anyways, STYLUS DOES WORK on custom roms. All day long. The stylus shortcut app that pops up is gone. Dabbler is in the play store. No shield controller support though, hopefully not too far off, it is being worked on hard! I use an ipega 9023 Bluetooth and find it works better without the gamepad mapper from nvidia, ANOTHER screw up by nvidia, that damn mapper hasn't worked for maybe 1 in every 15 games I try it on. Even mapping it myself, most times it just don't work.
But try the Temasek build by @BitOBSessiOn it's truly sweet. And just WORKS!

I've only used stock so far which seems good but not half as good (and speedy) as I expected it to be after my dual core Kindle Fire HD, so it might be the stock rom.
Could you please provide me with a link for the rom you're talking about?
Also, how's battery life on that rom? Better or more or less the same?

Here's the link to bitobsessions rom. It's built on cm12.1 android 5.1.1, with a built in custom kernel. You can clock the cpu down from 2.2ghz to 1.8ghz and it's still faster than stock. Plus all the custom rom goodies. I'll add more posts here in just a sec. To get you through the install if you need. Not sure of your knowledge base but I can walk you through rooting, custom recovery and rom install. But here's the link to the rom. I'll post one for the root access app, and recovery thread for you too

Here's the link for kingroot. It will root ota 2.2.1 with no pc needed. I just used it myself, install it, run it, it will prolly reboot ur shield, after reboot, run it again. It should root. Make sure you have USB debugging on. (if you haven't done so already, go to settings, about tablet, click on build number 7 times, then hit the back button once, click on developer options that are there now. Turn on USB debugging.

In the 2nd post are the downloads. Now it's not necessary to install all the multiform stuff, however at some point it does make a really nice way to dual or multi boot ur tablet using different roms from the external SD, there's even a version of Ubuntu. But you will need at least the modified twrp image.

From there that's about it. Get bitobsession rom, then reboot to recovery, remember to wipe first, click on wipe, advanced, check boot, system, cache, and data, there should also be an option to wipe dalvik, do so, install the rom, reboot. Profit!

Can we Install recovery with Flashify if we havn't unlocked bootloader before?
Thank you for your help mate.

Yep sure can! I unlocked mine just because, but it really isn't necessary. I think it has to be unlocked to use adb (android debugging bridge) on a pc to do it with the (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img) command. Flashify is kinda like unlocking the front door by going through the kitchen lol to be honest, your internal memory is broken into partitions just like a pc. But instead of c:/ being the first or root directory, on Android it's simply / all android is, is a very small Linux computer. So... Where recovery sits is simply /recovery as a partition. Where roms install is called /system info is saved to /data and finally /cache is where prices of apps sit to be accessible.
Root gives your current android system access to ALL files on internal storage, or, access to the "root directory" hence the term root. =) where normally as a "user" you can only read those files, "superuser" or root, can read and WRITE to the root files. And change them.
Unlocking the bootloader gives you access to those files remotely from a pc. Some other things too, but that's the skinny

After you get up and running on custom rom, I'll hook ya up and walk you through installing viper4android audio. If you haven't heard of it. It replaces the stock audio driver and eq, and makes beats audio look like child's play

Wow, that's a whole lot of links! Thank you!
Ughhh, if I'd only known that Kingroot could root Shield running 2.2.1 without unlocking the bootloader this last weekend! *sigh* I sat down and unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP and SU last Sunday... *sigh again* Well, it's ok I suppose, I was hoping not to have to do it even though I know Nvidia says it only MAY make my guarantee void... (To be honest I had my Shield replaced last week and they didn't seem to check anything, they had me ship my old tablet to someplace in Netherlands and the next day they shipped back to me a replacement from the UK, so I doubt they even took a look other than to see that the tablet was really in the box) But anyway, the point is that I had made my research (which I realize is a little outdate), and everyone said that you can't root Shield with Lollipop without unlocking the bootloader so I went through the bother to do it.
Wait, with MultiRom you can run a rom from the external SD too? I was considering giving it a go but since each rom needs every app re-installed I was like... hmmm 16GB of internal storage ain't enough, absolutely not... I'd like some more info about MultiRom if you have the time and are in the mood to write to me about it ^_^
Also, in BitO-K what's the difference between the simple version and the one saying Temasek? Also which Gapps do you suggest? There's a long list in there... (I don't really have to save space so it's ok if it's a large package, I don't want a mini just for it to take less space, I want the most stable one.)
In general I have quite a lot of experience with rooting and TWRP as a recovery (although I've never used CWM, it seemed so primitive with the volume button navigation thingie >.< ) but I still haven't understood a couple of things. 1) When I do a full wipe, which partitions do I wipe? 2) Also, I used to have a device with no external storage so I never had space to backup my whole ROM, only my app data, so if I want to do a full backup from TWRP, which partitions do I have to backup?
Damn I just read your comment again so ignore question 1) >.< You're one step ahead of me

So don't feel too bad mate, the kingroot that works for us is less than a week old....

Finally, I would recommend NOT playing much with the multirom thing right now, they are finding some issues currently with mounting the external SD card for booting from multiple roms right now. But it doesn't affect single rom use at all. And when you do a back up with twrp, it does it automagically, you just tell it where to save it, internal or external. Oh, additionally, yes the gapps is very small, I do look for the smaller ones, but functionality and stability are key, this is the only one I recommend, it just works right, ever since TRUE pagapps stopped being made I've played merry blue hell finding one that worked. I finally found delta and haven't looked back. Also, this is a biggie for me, and I don't THINK they have altered this yet. All apps get updated obviously, but user apps are in a different place than system apps. And when they are updated they retain an old copy ALWAYS. User apps, when updated only keep the current apk for backup. System apps used to keep a copy of all updates done. So far as I know it still keeps the original if it updates for a fall back, when you see that a gapps package is 450 mb. That means after each app has updated once.... It's 900... Updating user apps doesn't increase the space taken unless the app gets larger. Gapps all install as system apps, thats why u need the search add on. The Google app can be installed from play store, but voice search won't work totally. Ie it only works from the Google search app, this way voice search from any screen will work! =)

Yeah, it's a bummer. I got my device back from service and I was like... ok, this time I'm not holding back, time to finally root! (I did root my first device while it was still in KK to restore some game backups but then I wanted L so I upgraded and lost root and tried to be patient). Heh, never mind though, I have root and a recovery so that's all that matters now ^_^
Cool, thanks for the gapps! Oh, I need just one last bit of help because I'm confused. So I go to the xda post for the rom and there's this: BitO-K/KLX CM-12.1-Temasek (LTE EU/US & WIFI) I dunno where to go after I click on that... Do I choose the 11.6 folder? Is that the latest version? And then? Is the right zip for the wifi model the one that ends in "wf"? I never had such issues before because they used my tablet's name (tate) so I always could tell I had the right one...
Oh and about the backup through TWRP... so I should just choose the partitions that are checked by the recovery without messing with anything? I think it leaves boot and something more uncheched, I can check for sure when I get back home.

Md5 is the digital fingerprint for a file, there is also one called sha as well, same thing though. After your download finishes, look for the md5, it's a string of numbers, usually near the file name or download link. Install that md5 checker, then after the file is done. Copy the md5 numbers to clipboard, open the checker, click at top where it says choose file, navigate to the file and select it, then hit the paste button then the check button. Both strings of numbers should turn green.

Ah OK the model name has gotten a lot of people to scratch their heads. Nvidia hasn't made it easy for us much. The lte is called wx_na_do, and the WiFi is called wx_na_wf. Also there is wx_un_do that's international lte, although I beleive all lte models are unified. The WiFi is the same worldwide

And I just checked twrp backup. The only thing it doesn't back up is /cache and it gets rebuilt anyway at boot if it's been wiped. So no worries.

[ROM][Huawei U8100]Unofficial CM7.1 (Android 2.3.7) [2011-10-05]

Description
A CyanogenMod 7 port made for, and tested on, a Huawei U8100. May or may not work on other U8100,U8110 and U8120 phones.
(A lot of the work derives from all the existing U81xx CM7 ports)
Boots overclocked to 614.4MHz with frequencies available up to 768MHZ (I recommend NoFrills CPU Control for overclocking)
Uses 33% higher AHB bus speeds on overclocked frequencies on 528MHz CPUs (600MHz U81xx phones allready use these AHB speeds)
Allocates 18% of the RAM for compcache (compressed swap in RAM). Can be turned off or tweaked in CMParts.

For Google apps go here: http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ (I use the 20110613 version because the I prefer the old Market but the 20110828 version should work too)
If installation fails then try the attached clockwork recovery (unzip and flash with fastboot)
To install a different recovery you can download one of the packages here: http://android.modaco.com/topic/308985-19may-installing-a-custom-recovery-image-on-your-device/
In the step where you are supposed to run the install-recovery-windows.bat, instead manually flash the attached (and unzipped) recovery like this:
fastboot-windows.exe flash recovery recovery-v5.0.2.3-u8100.img
Then to get out of bootloader mode use:
fastboot-windows.exe reboot
great! i will test it

You must use my version of clockwork recovery or remove the parts in the install script that checks for "u8100".

Uploaded a new version that should install even if Clockwork identifies itself as u8110 or u8120.

There's a lot of different clockwork versions around and likely yours identifies itself as something other than u8100, u8110 or u8120. Perhaps it's an u8150 or u8160 recovery?

How is the battery life? Is it better then joilaroi's ROM (Huawei U8120 – RC1 - update 14 http://bit.ly/mC77sj )? His ROM would only keep the phone(U8120) running for like 10 hours, due to the camera problem.
If it's better I can use the ROM everyday.

[ROM] Huawei U8150 LEANdroidMOD 6 final.

Hi,
I have been in contact with Bertans through his LEANdroid thread and through private message and we have been working on a bit of a mod for LEANdroid. Basically people want OC/UC and the rest of the goodness from other roms.
It is a mod of LEANdroid 11.10.2 and has a few extra bits over and above that rom. Now has a kernel custom compiled by me from aorth's kernel source.
Includes:
LEANdroidMOD_6
-2.2.2 Thailand rom base, newer and has the mystical .2 instead of .1!
-NOMA kernel from before
-Custom Ubuntu and Jura fonts because they look better than the ugly android ones
-Not compatible with previous 2.2.1 releases (up to LDM 5)
-This is for testing, not sure if it is compelling enough as an upgrade over LDM5 as I am going to include fonts in LDM 5 too.
-Still has old market, but it will auto update, may update it in a future release.
-Has XDA anti malware patch set up in installer.
LEANdroidMOD_5
-Custom kernel based of NOMA source
-Very custom smartass cpu profile setup, seems fast and battery efficient
-24/12/12, now has Ubuntu and Jura fonts and XDA anti malware patch in installer
-Otherwise similar to before
Previous
-Android 2.2.1+ LEANdroid 11.10.2+
-OC/UC 30mhz to 691mhz. Defaults to 30mhz and 600mhz- Fusion Kernel.
-Smartass and interactive governers. Default is ondemand.
-164MB free space.
-Some custom sounds.
-Fusion kernel 122mhz and 600mhz by default.
-Busybox
-NOfrills cpu control installed by default.
-Tweaked memory management
Everything that worked on LEANdroid should still work up to LDM 5 but it has a more spicy kernel and a few more tweaks. Please backup first as I cant be responsible if it doesn't work or you lose stuff. As these builds are just LEANdroid with a different kernel and a tweak or two, you should be able to get away with just flashing it over your existing LEANdroid install and just wipe cache and dalvic cache.

Reboot after install and hold volume up and green call button then push the power button > hold vol up and green call until recovery menu comes up > wipe user data and cache as well as dalvic cache in advanced menu > choose install zip from SD card and select whichever LDM release you are using. Once it is installed, reboot the phone and you should have a shiny new LDM install.

Looks Good!
Great job - I'm excited - will try tomorrow. What keyboard and launcher is this running?
I will try it (I am excited about it).
Still dun understand why everyone say about abd driver in install procedure when all is done on phone and phone sdcard.
Is running standard android keyboard and launcher pro just like LEANdroid.
Think the adb part is just to get clockwork mod on there. You can also use rom manager if you want, although that seemed to be playing up last time I installed it. if you play a bit more you can also use fastboot, but I have not tried that yet. Im still running CWM 3 installed ages ago using rom manager.
Any idea how to get extended "Phone options" when i press power button.
Like reboot, etc not just the 3: Silent, Airplane, Power Off ??
Thx.
It is something to do with custom frameworks. Have not explored that much as yet. Trying to get the kernel good and fast for a start and then can look at custom looks for later.
Hangs at Android logo
I had just finished flashing LeanDroid when I noticed your (what I like to call) "LeanDroid on Steroids" (on Steroids due to being overclocked). I had been thinking if I were to right a ROM, this would be it...so...I was jazzed. I spent all day trying things over and over and can't get it installed. It just hangs at the "Android" screen. I had to install something so went back to regular LeanDroid and installed it again with no problems. I did everything you suggested including the wipe and the new CWM to no avail. Did anybody else get it installed?
Oh, ok... interesting. will have to do a wipe and flash and see what is going on at some stage. Have been developing it as I go on my phone, so possibly it works as I have been flashing kernels and such over existing builds.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Does CWM give any errors with installing?
Im guessing you are reasonable experienced with flashing, but how long did you leave it for on the android screen?
is this the android animation screen or the boot splash?
Does the MD5 hash match?
Thanks for helping test this, hopefully can get some more info and testing done to work out what is going on here.
heh, just flashed it from fresh and no dice, boot loop. trying to suss it now.
Going to upload a more basic build which is just leandroid+ kernel. Just tested on fresh install and it boots fine. Link will be updated in the first post.
Paul
Ok, take 2... try the new mod which is in the original post. It is straight LEANdroid+fusion kernel.
CWM gives no errors. Not heavy enough to know the meaning of "MD5 hash match" but also not fresh out of the box; I gave it at least 5 minutes on the "Android" screen (don't know if that's called the animation or boot splash); regular LeanDroid takes almost exactly 2 minutes so I thought 5 should be long enough. Will try the new one now. If doesn't work it will take me a little while to get back to you about it because I'll have to reinstall a working ROM so I can connect and reply. Here goes.
PS: I'm not doing this for fun; I just wanted a fast & lean ROM because I found myself demanding a lot of my little IDEOS and she was getting intolerably slow...am I'm really exhausted from trying to come up to speed on all this over the last few weeks...so...I want to be finished with this now...so...when you do any future updates (in gratitude for my help ) if it's even possible, could you please make sure it catches this LEANdroidMOD_2 so I don't have to do anything else to have your final version? I'd really appreciate it. Here goes. I'll let you know what happens.
OK. It loaded. Took 2 minutes just like plain LeanDroid. I went straight to the app drawer to play with NoFrills but it's not there. I realize you probably "lightened" this one as a troubleshooting tool to get her working. I just installed NoFrills and it does offer the 691MHz of the custom kernel. Sorry for asking you to educate me but:
1. Is it very advantageous to have NoFrills (or any desired apps) built in to the ROM instead of installed separately and if so, why?
2. Should I go 691, 122, ondemand, & deadline or what?
3. Should wait before I start heavily customizing my homescreens with postits, etc. because this prelim version won't be updated?
4. Is there a way to update to a more final version without losing my homepage customizations?
Thanks for the (I say best) ROM and any educating you give.
Hey Paulynator, thanks for your patience. Leandroidmod_2 was a very quick build to get things moving as I had to build something to get my phone working after the first rom didn't boot in testing! Will upload another build with busybox by default and a couple of small mods today. Problem came from data/app, so ditched that and put apps into /system/app.
Questions:
1)Not really, I just like it, others may prefer setcpu or something else instead.
2)You go with what you feel happy and doesnt crash your phone, try 652 and 60 first, then go higher and lower if it is working fine. Just leave apply on boot unchecked in nofrills until everything is working fine. Ondemand and deadline will be fine.
3)Updates should be able to be installed without a wipe.
4)Just install zip in CWM over your install, sorry, I cant promise anything though.
Thanks
Paul
Ok, take 3. everything from 2+busybox and some custom bits. Tested on my phone and it boots fine with a total wipe. Hopefully wont need to do a total wipe, but have not tested flashing over an existing install.
For question #1, I didn't mean NoFrills as opposed to SetCPU or something else; I'm asking if it's very advantageous to have desired apps built in to the ROM instead of installed separately and if so, why?
Paul,
Report on LEANdroidMOD_3 (a.k.a. LeanDroidOnSteroids, c'mon, it rhymes!) (or even "cleaner": SteroidLeanDroid. If I say so myself, awesome title for an awesome ROM...to me.)
Installed over version #2 w/o wipe seems to be ok...to the extent that I started the process of recluttering (restoring) my Ideos as though "she's a keeper", i.e. no more wiping; the records stay intact from now on.

Sorry to hit you with 3 since your last but since we have a "hard"/permanent Home button right below the screen, is the redundant one at the bottom of the app drawer removable from a menu or would I have to mod the rom to remove it?

Doesnt matter one way or the other, I just liked it built in. Only possible advantage is that some apps in /system/app wont use space in /data/app, but this is lost the moment you update them as updates seem to install into /data/app. So my Leandroid with nofrills in /system/app still gives 164mb free space in data partition until things get updated.
Good work, thanks for the update that it can be installed over a previous install.
Home button is part of launcher pro. on the home screen, hit menu>preferences>appearance settings>uncheck home button on app drawer.

Just found a possible glitch. Don't know if it's the ROM so tried the obvious things to no avail. The camera app (any camera app; I tested the problem by downloading and trying others) won't access the gallery. In the stock app, the little preview window (that tapping opens the picture in the main window) won't open the picture. It gives an error message saying "app initialize failed. please download the app from the market". The app isn't in the market so I d/l'd 2 other camera apps and they both did the same. Using Root Explorer to try to open a picture also wouldn't work. Could you please try to access the gallery on a phone you've installed your ROM on and let me know if it works? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
Works fine on mine. Try go to the market and update Quickpic. It does not like being in /system/app so if you update it, it should work. It was one of the reasons I tried to put it in a data/app from the start, but that caused bigger problems like the rom not booting.
I could also put the stock gallery back in alongside quickpic if needed but it does not have multitouch.

My first ROM Flashing [MoKee]

Hi all
I flashed my stock ROM for the first time. I thought i would write a bit about the process and my impression of the ROM.
This is what I did:
Download the ROM zip and place on the SD card.
Download the corresponding gapps and place on SD card
Make sure that the USB drivers for your phone are up to date
Root the Phone. You will find the *.bat file that i used for rooting Atrix 2 in the forum itself.
Install BMM. I read on a lot of places that BMM is dead but it was recommended by my ROM's web page so i stuck with it.
Boot into BMM's recovery console.
Select System 1 (or system 3-6 in case you want to multi boot)
Take Fast/Full Backup
Take backup of CID
you still want to ahead? this is the point of no return.
wipe stuff. the console has a section dedicated to wiping various type of data
format /system, format /cache, format /data
Flash the ROM zip
When Flashing is done, BMM will auto install BMM on the same partition. if that is not done, manually install BMM on system 1 using System Keeper
Flash the gapps zip
Reboot and enjoy.
My impression of the whole process is that it is rather silly. it is needlessly intimidating. most of it can be easily automated. Hopefully we will get better software over time which will make the process painless.
My Impressions of Mokee:
Pros:
Much faster than stock
tons of options that i am yet to explore
very stable, no crashes at all
Looks and feels like AOSP which i like
Cons:
Battery drain. My battery got drained in 6-7 hours. I am still investigating this.
Huge icons. So far haven't found how to make them smaller. More irritating that a critical issues though.

Thanks. Btw, MoKee is very near the pure stock experience as well. Their design was to take the stock android and the best bits from CM and package it. I finally decided to go with Mokee over CM as i felt they were way more active in their checkins.
If there was any bug fix from CM side, they usually pick it up and merge it asap. else they seem to be fixing a lot of stuff on their own.
Another con of MoKee that i forgot to write:
they preinstall 4-5 chinese applications which i found irritating. The first thing i did after installation was remove all of them.

I think ROM installation right now is where PC OS installation (OS2, Win 3.1 etc) was 20 years ago. You had to do every bit manually. Except nowadays its incredibly easy and even non tech savvy people can easily do it. I expect that the process gets easier for newbs in the next few years.
Take it as you will, but there are a dozen improvements to the process that can be done to improve it.

With whirleyes not supporting BMM anymore...i dnt see it improving any further.....Because BMM isnt built for the A2..we run it after making subtle modifications and customizations to the app...
And i dont see a new Boot manager being built from scratch..... BMM is already very perfect for me....Cant find a safer and better Bootloader for our a2 and i doubt there ever will be
And ABOUT the CM vs Mokee , CM wins hands down , it gives nearly 3 times the battery backup of Mokee...
I loved the asthetics of mokee.. i tried to do everything could do to have better batetry on Mokee(Like using the CM kernel directly , flashing JBX and stuff i better not go on about ).... But the ROM just refuses to let go off sucking battery all the time...I knw they update their kernel with newer commits from CM but trust me on this...i held on to Mokee as long as i could but the truth cant be denied...it just sucks wen it comes to battery consumption

[APP]Simple Recovery Switcher

I made this app because I got sick of flashing stock recovery when a GPE OTA came, and then flashing back to a custom. I also wanted to cut my teeth on Android App Development so here it is. My first app..
This SHOULD work on any device that uses the /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery structure.
I have tested it on the HTC M8 and the OnePlus One
You MUST be rooted and have busybox installed:
You MUST place a stock recovery img and a custom recovery(of your choice) img onto your INTERNAL sd card. Name them stock.img and custom.img (case matters)
Run the app and then press whichever you want to flash stock or custom and that's it.
This is my first app on google play and my first app ever really and I still have a lot of learn. Don't expect anything fancy. I did this mostly for myself to save time of manually having to flash the files and as a learning experience.

It's not possible. The only way you can flash a recovery on a non-rooted device is through fasboot (if your bootloader is unlocked) If you're using an app to flash a recovery then it needs to run a command that can only be run on rooted devices.

No, check the updated version. I will not add other installation methods, because I want to make sure nobody flashes the kernel without reading the warnings.
I moved the boot.IMG file to the root of internal storage,so what is the problemi?

Verify that the file is there and you have read permissions. Also make sure you have the command fully type.
In that screenshot I don't see the "of=". You can use any location you want. I just recommend using the internal.
I tried
1 dd if=/storage/sdcard0/boot.img
2 dd if=/sdcard/boot.img
3 dd if=/storage/emulated/0/boot.IMG
but always the same error
There are absolutely no other way to flash it?

After typing su, Copy/paste on your terminal this:
dd if=/storage/sdcard0/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5

Yes, this is correct. The "of=" part is extremely important. You may also use a graphical flasher.
I like Rashr, it works very well and is simple to use.
You could say it before,i already have installed rashr XD
I had no problem with it
I was looking for a way to backup the kernel 3.4.5+ we currently have. Is there already this as checked boot during the restore of the nandroid? I have seen some info that it is the boot.img in the nandroid "advanced restore" this must be clockwork mod recovery or a manager app...maybe? because I see no "Advanced Restore" option anywhere in TWRP. Though there is the checkboxed "boot" of the normal restore. How is best backup made of a kernel?
I just noticed battery bottoming out. Only charged a few hours ago. Not good.

You can backup it with rashr. There's the "Kernel flasher" and "Kernel backup" options. If you have set 1,4-1,5-1,6GHz, it's normal that the battery will discharge fast. If you don't use them, set at 800MHz or other. Or download an app with CPU profiles that sets the cpu profiles with one-click.

That sounds good. I was goong to try rashr as you mentioned but I got a tip flashify was good with samsung backups and it led me somewhat astray. Ive had the hard time getting good apks since switching to google less CM altogether.
Come to think of it that flashify attempt started really blackscreening my phone and probably screwed my battery since Id only charged it while using to 98℅. And I did do a significant amount of other stuff like making a small video and listening to music near constantly, downloading that apk , installing dropbox so I could get the apk from my laptop...actually I installed dropbox so I could get santeri's kernel on my phone. Do you know I was unable to directly download it it went to video instead of downloading, and then said "could not encode". Hilarious.
Also a few attempts at SCR and still no dice.

Hmmm. Flashify for me has bricked 2 devicesne hard bricked, the core plus hardbricked (i've recovered it, via odin mode. I have to mess up my partitions for recover it haha. The first device was a one-shot kill. When it flashed a recovery (bl unlocked, root etc), it reboots my tab and... gone forever. But i need only to boot it (the screen was black) and my pc recognizes it. And, with AFT, my tab was come back to live ) Encode? If you encode, you are recording video. If you decode, you are watching a video. SCR works well with me. I use it for loooong recording (like 10-30mins) but is a bit laggy. I tested it on the beta2/beta3. And now is working very well )
From yesterday i ride at 1.6 GHz OC and the phone is colder than on stock xD

Wow XD already flashed, set on performance, 1,6GHz, the max temp (with scotch, of course XD) is of 50°. Without scotch 43. Without back cover 38 XD When gaming, 69 (Clash of clans/Clash Royale) )

I would like to get SCR working. Maybe I need to updare it or let it download settings, which I have not let it do yet. Yeah. Encoder not working something like that...with the rotating video buffering display circle

Thats what I need. Your scr apk. What you got?
Yeah my Cyanogen screen cast apk may only be for 5.0 and up. Found it here in XDA a minute ago. Which says for nexus so probably not.

Oh for sure this flashify was doin something terrible to the phone. I had to hit the home button, the lock screen button and then uninstall the thing. Now I downloaded rashr. I will try that see if it can backup kernel for me. I thought the nandroid has the kernel no?

If you cant play videos, try MX Player with SW Decoder. I used an apk from internet of scr pro. Check it. I haven't installed them now due to free space unavaible.

Well why would it be a video anyway (on the phone here) ? I got the kernel from my laptop and no vid, and worked easily for the 5~MB download... Here are some screenshots

So, doing it on the phone I think I saw something about encoding. But cant remember exactly.
