Can the nexus 5 turn on without a power button? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have access to the phone for now, but I'm worried if it ever dies, I won't be able to boot because the power button is shot.
Is there any way to boot my phone from it being in a completely shut off state? Thanks.

@Niflheimer is wrong. If you want to boot without a power button simply hold down the "volume down" button. and plug your phone into a power source. It will go straight into fastboot mode. You will need android SDK installed on your computer here, then load your nexus 5 into fastboot mode (like mentioned previously) and type "fastboot reboot" you device will power on.
no power button needed

Sorry , I thought he meant without external devices.

Ive tried what was mentionned but no way to select the start option on the menu because there is no power button. Any other way to bypass this without the actual power button?

you don't need the power button, just boot into fastboot as said above and, if you got fastboot working on your pc, send "fastboot reboot" and it will boot into the system

wtf not going into recovery mode?

i need to root my phone so i can download rom manager so i can flash my first rom but its not kicking into recovery mode. im holding the power and volume keys at the same time. is there any other way?
1. Install android toolkit on computer
2. Install captivate drivers
3. Settings --> Enable USB debugging
4. Connect phone to computer
5. Open command prompt
6. Issue the command adb reboot recovery
Plus, u don't need ROM manager, nor root to do any of this stuff. Read the stickys on page 1 to get started on how to install ROMs.
1 turn off phone. wait for the vibrate to tell you its off!
2 hold both volume buttons
3 press the power button
4 DONT let the volume go until the screen comes on!

Let power go when you see the ATT screen, keep holding up+down vol
Mine just did the same thing tonight after using ODIN for the first time. Prior to ODIN, I could use the volume keys + power. After ODIN, the AT&T screen just flashes and then boots up.
I found other experiencing the same issue as me. I tried the following and it worked. However, I still cannot get the volume + power button trick to work anymore.

Not all build numbers can use the 3 button fix to enter recovery mode.
Look underneath your battery compartment to find your build number (1007, 1008, etc.). Then do a search to find out how to enter the recovery mode for your particular phone.
You may need to get yourself a usb jig.

[Q] easiest way to boot into bootloader/recovery

okay guys looking for the easiest way to boot into recovery / bootloader
would prefer both physical on the phone and adb commands
if you would be so kind
Volume down+power = BOOTLOADER
adb commands are the same across nearly every device
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot bootloader

thanks, i never had to use adb with my captivate or infuse so i figured i would ask .
also for some reason sometimes volume down +power wont work to get me into the bootloader.
I use Quickboot...it has many reboot options, including reboot into Bootloader and Reboot into Recovery.
Another simple way is to pick restart from the power menu then just hold volume down as the phone restarts.

You have to hold volume down the entire time until it gets to the bootloader. On the Captivate you could release it as soon as the splash screen came up but on this HOX you have to continue holding.

If the phone is powered off when you want to go into bootloader, you have to make sure "Fast boot" in Settings>Power is unchecked.
Going into bootloader using power+vol down requries the phone to be fully powered off or a reboot. Fast boot is actually just a deep sleep mode and not a full power down.

That method never seems to work for me. Holding the vol down immediately after selecting restart, or even holding the vol down while picking restart, it just boots normally.
I have to power down (with fast boot unselected in Settings>Power) then hold vol down while pressing power button, in order to get to bootloader.

I am trying to boot my samsung captivate into the boot loader. I've tried the physical key combos mentioned in this thread and there not working.
I tried using ./adb reboot bootloader but the phone does a regular reboot.
I am able to get a splash screen with that says "Download" and has a picture of the Android shoveling, by pressing both volumes and plugin in the power.
But if i do this, the device is not visible when I used ./adb devices
The question is how can i get this to reboot into the bootloader preferably from the terminal so that I can unlock it and install CWM.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Good job finding the wrong phones forum and digging up an old thread to post on

This forum is specific to the HTC One X/XL. You need to go to the forum specific to the Samsung Captivate. The key sequence is likely different, and getting advice from people with a different device can quite possibly lead get you the incorrect info.
Also, as mentioned above, try not to dig up old threads from 7 months ago.

Quick question: I'm trying to reboot my android STB in bootloader mode to check its lock/unlock status... Obviously I can't use the Vol Down + Power button in a STB...
So I tried "adb reboot bootloader", which didin't seem to work. I mean, it powered down, then powered up in a screen with the brand's logo, but nothing else happened, and the command "fastboot devices" didn't find any device either (while before that, "adb devices" showed the device normally). Also, I didn't get any unrecognized devices under Device manager which would denote that a new "device" got connected into the system...
I then tried "adb reboot recovery" which works fine...
So what does this situation mean for my STB?

[Q] How to boot into recovery without ROM or power button

My Galaxy S3 just faced the bootloop issue because of a faulty power button. I had CM12 installed, so couldn't use warranty. I opened up the phone, and cut the power switch off with a razor blade. Now, I can boot to download mode using the volume and home buttons while plugged in, and cancel download mode to boot phone. My issue is that I experienced a huge battery drain on a ROM, and dirty-flashed another ROM over it. Now, the phone won't boot. I'd like to go back to CM11, but can't figure out how to boot to recovery. Thus, this is what I need:
A way get to recovery, without using a power button, or booting up the phone

If you can boot to download mode, you can get to recovery mode. Here's how. I figured this out when my power button broke and I removed the power switch from the phone's motherboard, so it should work for you:
1. Take the battery out of the phone and unplug it from USB power.
2. Plug in USB power.
3. While holding down the volume-down button and the Home button, insert the battery (this is a little tricky).
4. The phone should start and warn you that you are entering Download mode.
5. Press Volume Down to reboot and then *immediately* push and hold Volume Up and Home simultaneously. The phone should reboot into recovery. Mine does.

Yes - thank you very much! FYI - when I read @Jacquestrapp 's instructions, I suspected the battery gymnastics wouldn't be needed since I had already learned (in this informative video) that I could boot the phone from a powered-off state WITH THE BATTERY INSTALLED by plugging in USB power and immediately depressing home and vol-down. This gets you to step #4 above, and proceed from there.
So this is cool! My trusty-old d2vzw's power button had stuck in the "On" position last September as they apparently tend to do, so I set it aside as a brick and bought a used HTC One m7. Needing a WiFi skype device for a friend, I searched and read about scraping off the S3's power button and operating without one. Now, I see how much I missed the S3's AMOLED display colors and contrast compared to the 1080p display on the m7, and I'm reluctant to part with the S3 .
Help - when pressing volume down it does not reboot.
I9300. could there be a difference in different regions?
edit: volume down switch (not the plastic bit, the hardware connectors) was a bit flimsy so I had it replaced. Still not working though.
I read the instructions wrong. I was using a USB jig to directly boot into download mode. But I need to get to the prompt before it. However, when following the steps the phone just begins charging instead.

Boot the phone, when it gets to the unlock screen try connecting it to PC and open an adb terminal then type:
adb devices(press enter, if it returns a serial number your device is recognized)
Then type:
adb reboot recovery
Or
adb reboot bootloader
Try unlocking it and typing the reboot commands while it is frozen.
Or you can order a USB jig for $5 US or less from eBay.
Or you can use an old USB cord and a 300k resistor(or any combination of resistors equaling no more and no less than 300k) to make your own jig, there are videos on YouTube for making your own jig.

I don't know if you are been cheeky or not, but I will go check if I can actually touch the option. Lol.
In case I can't what ROM can I install via Odin that will give me touch recovery. Or what other options do I have?
I really don't want to take it apart again to remove the plastic button so I can short the power leads with a wire to mimic a power button press.

Can't get into recovery mode on H955 V15c!

I can't get into recovery mode on my new LG G Flex 2. I've tried holding Volume Down + Power till the Logo appears, then releasing and holding again which just resets or shuts off the phone after a few more seconds, I've tried holding Volume Down + Power till Logo, then holding both Volume keys which does nothing. What does work is getting to the Hard Reset screen by holding Volume Down + Power till Logo, then releasing only Power button and holding it down again.
I've read that some things don't work on 5.1.1, but that shouldn't affect the recovery, right? As the phone isn't rooted, I can't use apps like Quick Boot either.
Help me!
I understand your frustration man, developing for this phone is a pain (to put it lightly). That being said do you have adb and fastboot installed (android SDK) on your computer? if so you should be able to open a command prompt and type
"adb reboot recovery" without the quote... and hit enter, and it should reboot into recovery. I cant guarantee you wont see an android laying down with a (!) in a triangle.... If that happens unplug your phone and keep pushing and holding different button combos to get it to reboot regularly again

Hi, try to reboot into bootloader using ADB.
First off thank you for the response.
I tried that as well however maybe I did it wrong. Is it? adb reboot bootloader or adb reboot download
It's so strange you know cause I've tried so many different ways and I thought that rebooting to bootloader from recovery menu would definitely work however all it does is reboot back to my home screen.
Power off phone and just hold down pwr+vol up+ Bigsby for like 8ish seconds and it should boot to download.
Also adb/fastboot is a second route, read through this the below link. Make sure you have the Samsung drivers installed and adb/fastboot properly installed and prerequisites. https://www.theandroidsoul.com/unlock-bootloader-via-fastboot-android/
Or try to boot in safe mode
Hold power button when phone is on, then long press power off, and then select safe mode. https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-223011/
