Android speaker crackling/popping noise survey - General Topics

I've recently bought a Zenfone 2 and I've noticed that the lower speaker emits crackling and popping noises when and after having played a sound, think about at the sounds of an old record player.
These noise are perceptible only when the environment is quiet but they are rather annoying as I can hear them every time I click on a ui element as touch sounds is on.
I've googled to see if this happened to other people and I've noticed that it was: many users with different devices, from the Nexus S to the Motorola Droid and with different Android versions from the 1.5 to the 5 had it.
A this point I don't know if it's "normal" to have it or not, espcially considering that hearing gets worse as the time passes.
In this small survey 53% of the HTC One users had it. I want to make a new, bigger survey.
Do you have it?

I've checked on:
Samsung: 2 SGS3's, and SGS4 Exynos, and S5, a Note 2, a Note 3, a TabPro 8.4, a NotePro 12.2, a GT3
Asus TF700T.
No such crackle and pop on any of them. It's not my lack of hearing them, I have Hyperacusis so I hear well above and below the normal range of human hearing. (I can hear the electricity in the power sockets.)

[Q] Max Speaker Volume Note 10.1 vs Tab 2 10.1

Hello,
I currently have an original Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I watch a lot of movies on it. I purchased a Galaxy Tab 2 because of the front facing speakers and I thought the volume would be louder. When I compared the two, I noticed that the Tab 2's volume was not as loud and it sounded tinny. Can anyone advise if the speakers on the Note 10.1 are better/louder? Does anyone have a Note 10.1 and a Tab 2 they can compare?
Thanks for any answers in advance,
I've got them both.In my opinion the note sounds alot better!

So in your opinion the Note is louder and doesnt sound as tinny?
If so, then I'm going to pick up one of those bad boys....
the note is better since the sound is coming straight at you instead of to the sides. I actually use the external speakers more often now than with the gtab 10.1.
Ditto. I never use the speakers on my other devices. I use bt speakers or headphones.
I was actually asking if they sound better than the Galaxy Tab "2", not the original tab. I have the original tab, bought the tab 2 and returned it because the speaker were crap..LOL. Do you have a "TAB 2 10.1" and a "NOTE 10.1"? If so, is the NOTE louder? I hope so... :fingers-crossed:

No worries. Although someone has to have the two tablets. Anyone? Hello??
Samsung.com says the note 10.1 has soundalive which sounds great on my notebook, but samsung.co.uk says it has 3d sound, no mention of soundalive , I have the Tab 2 10.1 , no soundalive or 3d sound mentioned for that one, though i am quite happy with the sound, it could be a bit louder though, I have an Note 10.1 on order so i will be able to compare them.

Thanks John, looking forward to hearing about your results.
I currently have a gal tab 10.1. Speakers sound pretty good for facing our the sides, but I think this Note 10.1 sounds better. I do use the speakers so that was important to me. Enough so that I didn't buy the Asus Transformer Infinity because the speaker on it is basically worthless .
I'm still waiting on someone who has both tablets and can say that the NOTE 10.1 is noticibly louder than the TAB 2.
It needs to be compared to a TAB 2 , not the original TAB 10.1.
People keep posting how the note seems louder than their orginal 10.1...
BTW, I'm not complaining, just anxiously waiting before I give Best Buy $535.
Thanks,
Rich

I used to have a tab 2 but took it back due to sub par performance. To me, the note 10.1 speakers seem better and are definitely bigger, but I can't say definitively since I haven't had them side by side. My advise would be to try out the note and take advantage of the 30 day best buy return policy if it's not to your standards sound-wise.

I don't have Tab2 10.1", but I did try it on the samsung shop display.
Comparing to the Note 10.1" which I have right now... I can tell you Note 10.1" is louder, and better than the tab2 10.1".
And yes, it has a 3D surround sound, which makes even a lot better when you watch movies on your Note 10.1".
In fact, some of the default ringtones of Note 10.1" also sample(s) of the 3D sound.
I have both the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1. I tested the tablets side-by-side by playing the same song from identical MP3 file, using the stock music player with maximum volume for both. I even measured the volume using the Sound Meter app on my Galaxy S2. I can say that the Note is slightly louder (only by 2-3 dB), but the Tab 2 has crisper sound.

From new ipad to 10.1 help

Hi there I'm a sammy geek in relation to my mobile had s2 note s3 and just about to get note 2 on Monday however I am a apple ite concerning my tablet
I have had enough of apple and want to know if the note 10.1 is a worthy replacement ?
I use my ipad for sat nav photo editing facebook games and internet
Most important is adobe photoshop which is built into the note 10.1 plus of course that fantastic pen which the ipad doesn't have
I want to know has anyone took the step I'm losing £300 on trade in if I do as I have the 64gb 4g version so want to be sure
How good is the tablet for speed multi tasking watching film and playing music
Any help gratefully received
Thanks

Speed of the Note is one of the fastest tablets I have tried, including the iPad3. Once you start using the stylus and other TouchWiz features (ie. floating video, split screen, floating calculator, etc.) you'll be hooked.
Just wondering, is there a return policy if you decide not to keep the Note?

Sat nav - The Note will be better. You'll have more options for s/w and the front-facing speakers are loud and should be easy to hear. It also supports Glonass.
photo editing - Probably a tie. Depending on the detail you're editing to the Note could win based on the added value of the S-Pen.
facebook - The iPad app is proably better aesthetically but it'll work the same on both devices.
games - Depends on the games.
internet - The Note has the best browsing experience of any Andorid tablet. But I'm guessing the iPad's will still be more fluid but no more functional.
speed - It's the fastest Android tablet available. Because iOS is both so stuctured and limited it tends to be more fluid. But in terms of getting stuff done they should perform the same.
multi tasking - A huge benefit. The clipboard is also more of a scrap book. As you collect things from the web or apps and copy them they remain in the clipboard to be used later. Even after a reboot.
watching film - If you're coming from a retina display iPad you may notice some loss in definition. But the Note's display is great with very accurate color rendering. You can also watch a video in split view while you're doing something else or use Pop-up-play to watch a video while using the tablet normally. I watch a lot of video and am pleased with the display.
playing music - The Note has the same Wolfson DAC that's in the SGS3. Audio reproduction is brilliant. It also has BT 4.0 with aptX support which is a lossless playback method if your BT speakers or headphones support it.

I have an iPad 2 [i didn't see much of an upgrade to the iPad3] and the Note 10.1
I love both of them.
I find this tablet a lot more useful than the iPad.
multi-tasking i great. Not perfect.
watching movies is great [with the stereo].
music... well louder than my iPad.
I have the Note 10.1, my wife has the Ipad3. Due to her liking the Note 10.1 a lot better, we're saving to buy another Note 10.1 and we'll give the Ipad to my daughter.
Neither of us sees a noticeable difference in the screen, but some people do. Realistically, you probably won't note the difference with movies or pics. However, you may notice a difference in small fonts. If you read small fonts in normal use, you may notice a large difference. I HIGHLY recommend comparing screens for yourself. That way you'll know for sure what the resolution difference will mean to you.
For watching movies, the Note 10.1 wins hands down. Because of screen aspect ratios you have a 8.9 inch screen on the Ipad and a 10 inch screen with the Note 10.1. (Given a 16:9 movie.) Combined with the speakers--which are FAR superior on the Note--movie watching is a much better experience with the Note. Same with music, the speakers on the Note just blow the Ipad away.
There's no contest when it comes to photo touch up. The s-pen makes a night and day difference. Selecting areas of the photo with the pen is a game changer.
OK, now the downside to the Note 10.1. There was an update--which got pulled--that makes the Note a much better machine. Smoother with less bugs. With the update my Note runs great, without it I got a little annoyed. The update is in the development section here, so you can still update. However some people--a small minority I believe--have had problems with the update. For some, the pen stopped working. That's probably why Sammy pulled the update. The good news is that we can be sure that Samsung is working on the bugs the pre-update Note has, since they addressed them in the update. Jelly Bean should be along soon. So if you get the Note 10.1 and choose not to update you'll have to live with a few annoying bugs until Jelly Bean is released.

Note Pro 12.2 or Tab S 10.5?

Hi Guys,
As a free replacement from Samsung, they are offering me these 2 options. Which one do you suggest is better?
Thanks,
Arpan
It depens on your preference.
The Tab S is 10.5" and has an AMOLED screen.
The Note Pro is 12.2" LCD, and has an Spen. 12.2" is 50% more screenspace, and about the size of an A4 sheet of paper.
Internal specs are identical for the LTE/LTE and WiFi/WiFi models. .
It all comes down to:
Do you want a big screen? NotePro.
Do you want a regular tablet screen size? Tab S
Do you want an Spen? NotePro
Do you want an AMOLED screen? Tab S.
Personally I have the NotePro P905 LTE because I wanted a big screen. Watching films on this thing is a true delight, as is note taking and gaming. It's nowhere near as heavy as one would expect.
If they're offering you the NotePro p900 or the p907A (AT&T), decline it. Those have issues with reboots, bluescreens and freezes. And most games are incompatible.
The P905 LTE has no such issues.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 2
ShadowLea's answer is great, but for what its worth my experience with the p900 has been pretty much flawless. Ive experienced none of the mentioned concerns, and if you are planning to root and rom it, the p900 has the best support of the 12.2 models.
Well I have an offer on SM-P9000ZWVXAR or SM-T800NZWAXAR - I am seriously thinking on the 10.5 due to decent size and AMOLED. I happen to use my tablet in sunlight a lot and was facing a problem on my Note 10.1 2014 edition. any first hand experiences?
The only reason I may look for Pro maybe would be that it is more expensive - so I can sell it at a decent price and use that to buy maybe Nvidia Shield
Well, the NotePro is (much) more expensive, yes. But it is also a niche device, meaning far less potential buyers. (millions less). It's also older.
I haven't had any issues in direct sunlight with mine, but keep in mind that the sun in this part of the world is less bright than in other parts due to the distance to the equator and the climate. (If you don't know what the Dutch climate is like, it's pretty much the same as the UK. We're neighbours.)
It has a significantly higher brightness ratio than the 2014 10.1.
It also has a higher brightness ratio than the Tab S. 627nits over 395nits for the Tab S, so nearly twice as bright. This is because AMOLED turns off black pixels, reducing overal brightness but creating infinite contrast.
You can find the numbers here: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S-10.5_id8662/benchmarks
Perhaps you can find a store which has both on display so you can try them?

I'm in the exact same situation. I'm completely stuck as to which one I should get. Either way it would be LTE version from AT&T. I've gone through so many threads but still can't make up my mind. Please help.

Still a good choice in 2016?

Been using the moto x 2013 for some time now and its just about perfect. I dont game, my use is heavy on web, text. The problem with my X is that the microphone doesnt seem to work anymore, I have to carry a wired or bluetooth to talk on the phone...which is a pain.
I want something small, similar in size, to replace it. Ive narrowed it down to a S4 or LG G2. Which would you guys recommend? Anyone else make a move from the X 2013 to one of these models?
Thanks,
Mario
If it is bought new, sure. But second hand you can get more recent models at the same prices.
Based solely on the specs, I would go for the G2. When I'm looking for a phone the first thing I look at is the performance, and, looking at the hardware, the G2 is better equipped than the S4. But this is just on paper.
For all I know, the real world performance may be the same.
I am satisfied with the S4
Thanks. Yeah either the G2 or S4 new is what I want, just curious to hear what folks think getting a 2.5 year old device. Id get a new flagship but all of them are just too big.
Get the snapdragon variant. The exynos overheats
S4 is still a very good phone: it can run without problems marshmallow custom roms and you can play on it big games like fifa 16 or asphalt. But if you want a good new phone and almost same dimensions like s4, I recommand OnePlus X.
I don't think S4 will be a good idea now. I had both versions (GT-I9500 and GT-I9505) before I moved for Xperia Z3 D6643. Unfortunately, I have damaged my Z3 and until it got fixed, I will be using the GT-i9505 again.
This phone is driving me crazy, even with max brightness, it's impossible (looks like a black screen) to use it under sunligh. 3G, and 4G (not to talk about GPS) data drains a huge % of battery, average screen on time is about 3-3,5h, no battery optmizations.
The Z3 (5.2") and Z3 compact (4.6") are the best options when talking about cost x benefit. Almost 10h screen on time and +800h standby time.
Thanks all. I kept looking and looking for new S4 or g2 but everything out on the Bay was new "other" or sellers with tons of negative feedback. Lots of positive but also much negative. I just saw no trusty sellers. Ended up pulling trigger on oneplus x. Now the wait for it begins. Hope oxygen is decent.

Samsung has it's own update cycle. Most flagships get support from Samsung up to 2 years after released.
And, in 2016, Galaxy S4 won't be supported anymore.

The Only thing that is extremely bad about i9505 is its sound quality in earphones. On gsmarena u will see they will say it has best audio quality but in reality its far far away from the best its so flat and dumb.Even all the chinese phones sound better than it there is literally no bass at all in the sound and if u increase it by an equalizer the volume decreases alot.
You could also try i9506 S4 LTE+/LTE A
Ive been using this device for a long time now. Recently broke my galaxy note 3's lcd and sold my lg g2. Back on my i9506 and still good. Its not far with g2 in terms performance. Although I use 2 batteries on my i9506 but hey, great device

Sound quality depends a lot on the headphones. I hardly think that in-ear ear buds are great at producing bass.
Let's not forget about the song quality too. Anything with a bitrate lower than 320KBPS will have its quality reduced. So always go for 320 or FLAC.
It can have the best sound chip in the world if the headphones are garbage and the music file has static noise.

There are always better devices. My 2 other devices (An ZTE Blade and LG P350) sound crappy compared to my S4.
That's why there are mods like viper4android. With the right setup you can get nice bass.
Besides, stuff like this is just a preference. I, for instance, don't like heavy basses. I like to listen to the music, not the "boom boom" sound of the bass.

I Dont like much bass either but the sound of i9505 compared to Sony Xperia Z2,Galaxy Grand Prime,Galaxy J5,Galaxy Ace 3 and the desktop computer is really flat and lacking.I can hear more elements in even samsungs lowest end phones than i9505 using the same earphones
Stay away from S4.
- Lollipop roms are okay but not very fast.
- Exynos AND snapdragon can overheat actually depends on the kernel.
- microphone distortion (personally) which I can hear as I play back the call recording
- not as fast or smooth as I expected for quad core when I previously had S5 mini
- Sometimes run out of ram but not too often
Generally just don't expect much. The specs look really good on paper but it's actually not that good a phone.
The screen resolution is very high which is nice.
Camera quality / focus is average as well. Slow to focus. Quality average.
I suggest buy 2nd hand used S5 or S6.
Unfortunately no S6 mini.
@fatjoez
1. Really? 5.1.1 is okay for me.
2. I've a device with Intel processor and it does the same thing. In short: All CPUs could overheat.
3. -skipped-
4. Blame Samsung's policies.
5. I'm only felt it on TW ROMs.
And no, I won't buy Exynos devices. Devices with Snapdragon SOCs are the best choice.
But, it's up to you. I couldn't interfere your mind.

Well I bought a oneplus x. Been using it for one day and I'm not sure about it. Works OK. Speed us good but it's just too big. I just wish I could find a phone the same size as the 2013 moto x. Now I'm thinking either a S4 or Z5 compact. :/

Speaker and Earpiece quality & volume

My last note, the 9, had very poor speaker and Earpiece quality and volume. Compared to the iPhones it's a joke really. The iPhone got twice as loud as the Note 8 or 9. Yes, I know sometimes we use ear buds and headphones...
Does anyone know what the 10 sounds like? Didn't they hide the earpiece or make it significantly smaller in this new model?
I don't see any of these initial impressions or hands-on videos mentioning anything about call quality or speaker volume or anything like that.

Saw a speaker comparison and the s10 plus is just slighty louder than the note 10 plus. And my S10 plus is WAY louder than my note 9.
Note 10 plus also louder than iphone xs max although i feel the iphone had better bass (and I am saying that as someone who hates apple lol)
i also listened to my note 9 vs note 10 plus side by side in best buy and it is far superior.
Best Buy has the Note 10 on display now?
