TF700T vs TF201 both running LP 5.1 - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi,
I have both tablets, the TF201 running Katkiss 5.1 is very responsive and stable and much better than the TF700T running Zombipop 5.1 B4 which is a bit laggy but a great improvement on stock JB. The screen display is much better on TF700T compared to TF201 but I am disappointed with TF700T performance which on paper has a better hardware but the old TF201 wins thumbs up on performance. Do any body know what has let the TF700T down, is it a slow internal memory/motherboard?
thanks

from what i can remember, yes, the read/write speeds for the poor internal memory was a problem that slowed the device down alot.
Many people get around this with ROM2SD (running rom from micro sd card).

I have installed Zombi-pop LP beta 6 on the internal memory with data2SD and it is the best experience that I have ever had with TF700T running very smoothly so far. I am not sure that installing it as Rom2SD even on a fast microsd is going to be discernibly better, unless somebody advise me otherwise.

[Poll] Which CPU Mode are you using?

Just wanted to get a quick poll from all Infinity users, as to which CPU mode/setting you've found yourself using the most?
Back and forth between on demand and interactive. Usually on demand though.

Since this is my game and multimedia tab, performance of course! If ac is available so much the better. It cuts through a full hd 1080p movie like butter, this buffalo linkstation NAS is really what will make the 700 shine. Wish Asus upgraded to a dual band wifi though, it's worth it.
Oh yeah, 64g is going to provide that much needed storage space for the next gen of games for the Tegra3.

I think you're confusing ASUS's power scheme and CPU governors here. The question was about the former.
The powersaving mode makes the CPU run at 500MHz max., balanced - 1500MHz max., performance - 1700MHz max. What governs the actual speeds, however, is the CPU governor.
The governors are a different thing then. Interactive is there by default, performance makes CPU run at the highest clock speed all the time, etc. So you can be in powersaving mode and on the performance governor. You need to be rooted to change the governor.
I think there are some tweaks and settings apart from that, as the difference between 1,5 and 1,7GHz is not that huge, but many benchmark results tend to be considerably higher in performance mode (although some have reported getting higher results on balanced), but I don't know the details.
Going back to OP's question - I think balanced is OK most of the time, as it gives you a good performance:battery life balance.

Actually power save mode limits one core to 1 ghz ( on the prime so prolly 1.2 on the infinity and also caps speeds when certain amounts of cores are active. You can still play many games on powersave without a drop in performance though.

It limits it to 500MHz on my Infinity, so are you guessing or you know it for sure?
Most of the time it's on Balanced, but when I do games or other CPU intensive things I switch it to Performance.

cpu spy shows 910 for me while running Jelly Defense in power savings mode. I believe it can go higher than that but I'm not certain for sure.
On balanced usually. I noticed on energy saving mode the colors are different? Or maybe the contrast? Colors on balanced and performance are fine. In fact, I think 1080p movies can be played in power saving mode. For games I use performance mode.

I use power-saving. Because then I don't need to recharge the pad more than once a week (After 7 days of light usage, the tab had almost 50% battery left and the dock was empty. Awesome!). If I need more oomp, performance mode is dead easy to activate.
This pad is fast anyway
Wow I use the tablet alot more than you, I sometimes charge it twice a day.

Me on balanced usually.
Seems as though it's good for most common uses.
Haha yeah, but what worries me is that charging a lot won't it degrade the battery quicker?

Good read, thanks.
80% of the time that I'm just taking care of email, browsing the web, installing/updating apps, watching non-hd videos, and the other such, I keep it on balanced.
Gaming, watching HD videos, and other such, I pump it up to performance.

K...after reading that...I'm switching to perf mode and I'm staying on perf in System tuner also...
Not too worried about warming the CPU up a little.
The tablet runs like a 440 hemi with a triple on top in these modes! :fingers-crossed:

Some quick memory tips...

My SGN10.1 was idling at about 1.1 ghz memory. That seemed very high to me and my tablet was feeling sluggish. Couple things I did to improve things:
1) Limited background processes to 3 in Developer section. Have not noticed any FC's or other problems as a result.
2) Went back to good old LauncherPro launcher (wallpaper works MUCH better).
3) Loaded up the new Dolphin Beta Browser (its MUCH faster than Dolphin and blacks look better).
Now my idle memory is under 700 and everything is just quicker.
YMMV. Give it a try and report back your memory results.

Performance mode

I've been searching around for a bit and cant find a definitive answer on the affects of performance mode on the infinity (Not rooted, running stock). I wanted to get everyone's opinion on how exactly it affects the OVERALL performance of the infinity.
Is the trade off worth the decreased battery life? Does it alleviate some of the lag we sometimes see in battery saving and balanced mode? What areas ( browsing, app draw animation, switching between home screens etc...) do you see the greatest increase in performance?
Also i don't really care about the different benchmark scores that are out there. I want opinions on EVERYDAY USAGE, not benchmark results. Thanks in advance guys!

running stock deodexed rom in performance mode,
set cpu with on demand governor and minimum clock bumped up to around 240,
browser to ram installed along with system tuner tweeks I couldn't be happier.
Battery life is still great and I get really good performance with Dolphin and good performance with Chrome.

Good question...
I don't see much difference tween performance and balanced.
Gaming is a tad better in performance maybe because it pushes the GPU a bit.
As far as everyday use and battery life not much more speed in performance.
Just another button to push versus a root tweak.
Hmmm, OP - why not just try it yourself and see?? Who would be a better judge than you, on your own device, using the apps that you use??
Everyone uses these tablets differently and just because someone else gets better results with their setup, doesn't mean that you would see the same results...

I have tried it, but obviously im not the only one who owns a tf700, nor is my use of the tablet the same as everyone else. Also there have been obvious differences in individual tablet performance regardless of performance mode. Hence why im asking everyone's opinion. That way i can compare my results to those of everyone else and see if there is a correlation. Cant do that by just looking at my own individual results

If you want good performance you need to at least root your device.
as far as cpu speed goes, all performance mode does is kick up the max from 1.5GHz to 1.7GHz. in power saving mode the max is 1GHz. not sure about gpu changes.
i tend to use power saving mode unless im playing a resource intensive game, which honestly doesn't happen all that often. i don't really see a difference between the modes as far as changing between home screens, launcher drawer, etc.

Understandable, but that's not what im asking. If i wanted to know the what rom to use and how that specific rom performed on performance mode, then i would ask that. But im not asking that. Thanks anyways.

If its like the 201 which I assume it is then:
Performance mode has higher maximum speed and is more aggressive with powergating. It also has higher contrast and I think faster bus link speed. 3d speed is best at this setting.
Balanced will scale to quad core but will be more hesitant to hit high speed and ungate cores compared to performance mode. The net is a slight stutter. The contrast is lower. 2d balanced performance is the same as performance and powersave is about half the 2d speed.
Powersave is more conservative with speeds and gating. Is good for video playback if you can get over the dynamic contrast which is higher in this mode.

I've had noticeable lag in balanced mode while watching 1080P video. I get zero lag with performance mode. I also notice the graphics frame rate is smoother and higher on performance mode as well. Especially when you play games that totally utilize the tegra 3 chip set.

Most of the time I've spent with the tablet so far has been flashing roms (stock based and cm10 testing which tends to be very time consuming lol) and tweaking stuff. When I do actually USE it, it has been for media consumption most of the time (displaying photos for friends that are over, reading ebooks, looking up something on the web, reading XDA, etc). Nothing really resource intensive.
Stock, non-rooted, not unlocked, no tweaks, turned off most bloatware. Running a Live Wallpaper (Steampunk Droid). Have had it since about a week before the release. (yes yes, the store cheated.)
My everyday use is mainly: checking mail, typing documents (books), watching videos (tvshows, films), working in Photoshop Painter and Sketchbook, reading pdf magazines, playing (non-casual) games, reading 9gag, vlc remote, design presentations, playing music, webtesting layouts.
From what I've noticed:
Power Saving:
Delay in loading apps, changing screens, scrolling and swiping (4-5 seconds to load the icons on homescreen). Typing (120wpm) on the dock keyboard drives it completely insane, I have to wait about two minutes for it to finish catching up, and it usually ends up as complete gibberish; Highly amusing, but not very useful. Videos of any size pretty much won't render properly at all. Websites take quite a while to load. Saves the most battery in sleep mode (+-1% loss over 10h wifi off)
Balanced:
Smooth screen transition, appscreen loads (almost) instantly. Lags slightly during intensive use (typing with keyboard, video loading, heavy games, multiple browsing tabs). Videos work alright, anything over 720p won't work properly, Tegra3 games lag (fps of about 5). Ordinary games run fine.
Performance:
Bit more snap-responsive than Balanced, by a fraction of a second. Not vital, still noticable if you're looking for it. Blurays run (more or less) smoothly (ICS isn't designed for it) (tested with Timescapes 4K bluray 1080p mp4 in VLC Béta, it ran the video for 8 hours on high brightness&ips+ with dock connected.). Heavy games (MW3, NOVA3) run fine. No delay between swiping, switching screens or launching apps.
There is no difference in screen contrast or brightness between Balanced and Perfomance as far as I can see.
Personally, I use Battery Saving when I put the device to sleep or on idle (the occasional email it can handle just fine). For normal use, I go for Balanced mode. If I notice it is a bit sluggish in games and videos, I switch to performance for the duration and then just swap back once I'm done. Using performance for anything other than when it has trouble rendering is a waste of battery and power.
Hope this helps.

[Q] [KERNEL] Devil 1.9.5 Swap

Hello!
I'm using an i9000 with CM10 and Devil 1.9.5.
I'd like to say I'm completely BLOWN AWAY by how good this kernel works. I've tweaked it a little according to info I researched around and so far it performs flawlessly (three days into it).
The thing is, my phone has just gotten so good that I'm not sure if there's any significant improvement to be achieved over this. I've purchased a 16gb Class10 micro SD, and am looking into activating the swap function in Devil (currently using 50mb of zRam instead).
1) Is it worth (performance wise) doing? What kind of changes should I expect and to which kind of applications/usage? Is the battery consumption going to change?
2) Is it worth sacrificing the longevity of a micro SD card for the added performance? If so, how long should I expect to be able to use it before it fries from the constant R/W?
Thanks a lot, BIG UPS to DerTeufel1980 for the insane level of quality he's been able to achieve.

[Q] How noticeable is the speed increase with data2sd?

Let's be honest here: Even with the latest rom, CROMI, etc, the tablet still suffers from abysmal I/O performance, with translates to laggy UI, long homescreen redrawing times, etc. Now, I'm seriously considering getting a $100+ 64GB UHS-1 95mb/s capable microSD card to use with data2sd. But how much does this actually help? I know any experience is likely to be highly subjective, so, along with opinions, would anyone care to contribute some video comparisons?

Frankly, I find that browsing has mostly been solved with browser2ram, and movies off internal storage always worked for me. My main remaining annoyance is the homescreen redrawing - when rotating on homescreen, waking up from sleep or switching back to homescreen after gaming, it takes several seconds for app icons to appear and even longer for the widgets to fully load, during with the UI stutters horribly.
Sounds like a launcher problem. Which one are you using and have you tried others?
I'm using the stock launcher. I've tried nova and apex, and the problem is less pronounced but still there.

I'm runing data2sd with 16gb UHS-1 95mb/s, cleanrom 3.2.2, _that_stock Kernel with ROW scheduler, journaling and fsync disabled. My tablet is super smooth, no stutter, home icons/widget redraw etc..However, if you do a clean install of cleanrom with stock kernel, you should NOT have that kind of experience you described. I suggest you do a full wipe then perform a clean install with _that kernel, and don't install too much "junks" on there, only install the apps you really needed. When I have time, I will try to make a video of data2sd on 95mb/s card.
