Looking at picking up the 64gb Wifi version on Amazon for just a hair over $700. I'd really like to have the LTE version to use with my AT&T account, but it looks like I'd have to sacrifice the ability to flash custom ROMs to do so. A quick Google search says that the Lollipop update is due by the end of next month for the Wifi version. I can get a used or open box version much cheaper, but I worry about some of the problems I've seen posted about and also possibly a year's worth of wear on the non-replaceable battery.
So what do you guys think? Having owned this tablet for about a year (some of you, I presume) would you pay $700 knowing what you know now?
P.S. Does an installed micro SD card stick out the side of the tablet or can it be installed and the cover closed for permanent use?
I've got the LTE version, in my opinion very much worth the 700 dollars. (I paid $966 for it). It has the exact same hardware as the Note 3 N9005, which is almost as expensive with a much smaller screen.
Battery lasts about 5 weeks in standby, almost 18 hours when watching films (Which is a dream on this thing. 12.2" 2K ). Readability in sunlight is good. I haven't encountered any problems so far.
I'm not so sure about the WiFi edition, as it has a weaker Exynos and Mali, (Same as the N900 Note 3) no fast charging (relevant with 9500mAh, as even with Qualcomm fastcharge it takes about 6 hours) and several people report issues with bluescreens. If you're interested in gaming, a lot of games aren't compatible with the Mali GPU. Then again, it does have customROMS, a few. Though this thing is very fast without them.
As for the MicroSD, it's covered by a lid, doesn't stick out at all.

Yep. It does. Pretty much straight and forward, right? The device by itself is excellent. Great hardware specs (as said previously, like N9005) and the 12.2" is kind of AWESOME for pretty much everything.. from games to navigate in the web.. I paid $600, brand new, but for sure I would pay a hundred bucks more for such a great device.

Okay, okay, you convinced me... just ordered an Open Box 32gb LTE variant from eBay for $450. Any dangers in rooting, at least?

There are some people who have issues with freezes after rooting (on all variants). Make sure you freeze everything KNOX-related, as that causes it.

I've had the HTC One E8 for just over a week now and I am thoroughly impressed. The device has a premium display and chip-set at a mid-grade price. The curved edges of the poly-carbonate (plastic) back plate makes this device easy to hold without losing its visual appeal. On the back you will also find a 13 MP camera with a single tone flash. The face of the phone contains a 5 MP Selfie camera, 5” HD display, and two front facing speakers. The “Boomsound” front facing speakers can push out a great deal of sound without losing any sound quality.

Another amazing feature of this phone is Sprint Spark. If you have not had a chance to try out Spark you might be blown away by the data speeds you will see. This was my first time trying out Spark and I could not believe how much faster it is then my cable internet speeds. Check out Spark availability in your area.

How is the phone after a few weeks of usage?
How is the battery life?
What is the Android version on it? Did it get 4.4.3?

The battery life is pretty good and typically lasts me the entire day. Also good to know that I am always playing with it so you might get way better battery life then I do. The US Sprint version comes pre-loaded with Android 4.4.2.

I have had my phone for a few days, and I have to say that I am impressed with the quality of this device for the price I paid.
Sound/speed is much better than my old Galaxy S3.
Multitasking is a snap, and I kind of like the HTC Sense UI.
Thinking of rooting this device, have you had the chance to root yet?

Many of us in India have rooted it, you can find the threads in the dev section and Q&A's also.
Running smooth, and yes , a great phone overall...
cheers.

Thanks for the feedback. Haven't really given rooting much thought.
I am on sprint and have a galaxy s4. I am happy enough with it.
I want the ability to leave sprint and be off contract with either att or tmobile.
I am worried about what I reading with battery life on the Nexus 5.
Can anyone comment on their experience with both he 4 and the 5? Pros/cons etc.
One thing I can tell you from my experiences is that N5 battery is way better than S4. S4 is a powerful device but battery was one of my reason to stay away from it.
My N5 blows my S3 away non battery life.
I had a s4 and i was disappointed with the battery life, the galaxy series never exceeded my expectations especially when they inside touchwiz it reminded me when i had the s2 and the complaints people had,
With amoled displays its ment to be more efficient but it drained so fast when in use, so i swapped for a n5 and even though the battery is smaller i don't need to charge it twice a day.
The n5 is a nice solid device to hold,no bugs to mention, just nice smooth vanilla android
My s4 could not connect to camera often, wakelock bug, reboot required, standby drain,no knox security or deterrents for unlocking boot loader.
Bugs varied from device you may not experienced these.
Thanks for the response.
I was going to get the 6, but that is just too big for me. 5 will be a keeper for a while and it can be used on Sprint ATT and TMobile.
Battery!!!

If you only listen to music, use social media and make calls, the battery will last a day. Now, if you start playing games and watching videos all the time on youtube the nexus 5 you will run out of power at the end of the day. I'm very pleased with my battery life, and with Android Lollipop promising better performance, you can't go wrong getting a nexus.
Funny, when I owned a s4, the best part of the device was the stellar battery life. My only gripe with it was the amoled screen (looked fake to me).

Battery didn't improve much from the S3 before it. AMOLED needs a lot of juice to get the brightness level usable though that has been somewhat resolved in the latest generation panels found only in the S5 and Note4. Hopefully the Nexus 6 was able to procure them and not stuck with last year's tech as the Moto X 2014 was forced to do.
The Nexus 5 blows away the S4 in everything. I set it to ART and it is much faster.
Spark on Sprint is 22mb down.
Very happy I made the switch. What a great phone this 5 is, kicking myself for not getting it a year ago.
I decided to buy this as an extra device if at all i brick my main device, i decided to put my own thoughts here because of lack of reviews about this pretty good 50$ phone on the internet. if you want me to cover anything else, feel free to request down below.

Review and rooting guide below.
Review
Performance- The Mediatek chip performs exceptionally well in this device. I'm pretty impressed with what this company has been doing with its cpu stuff lately.
Build- It feels solid.
LTE- Many low budget phones are still shipping with HSPA, so it's nice to see LTE in this one.
Display- It's not really a bad display, but it's clear that it's a cheaper panel. Really just way too cool in my opinion.
On screen keys- these are literally the best thing they have done on the phone
Android 5.1- I seriously doubt it'll ever see any update, which is a bummer.
When it comes to looks, I'm kind of torn on how I feel about the Xfire. On one hand, I think it's kind of OK looking; on the other, I think it looks cheap. The thing is, I can't really tell what it is that makes me think the latter - perhaps (most likely?) it's the plastic back. It doesn't really look terrible, but it doesn't really scream "premium" to me either.
The overall size and form factor are pretty great, though. It's got a 5-inch display, which is a really nice size no matter how you slice it. It also feels very solid and well-made - not at all like a $50 phone. The build quality definitely offers the more premium feel that I like to see on more low budget phones
Camera - the camera is pretty rock solid on this one, check out some pictures i took
Software - This phone runs vanilla android and is all but stock with some minor "useful" software customizations offered.
Performance and benchmark - this device performance good and doesnt lag, also the multitasking is pretty good.
i have performed antutu benchmark and here are the results
Conclusion - i really love this device, i bought this device as an extra if at all i brick my main devices due to rom testing .this little 50$ beast is perfectly standing upto its price and delivering its best
Rating -
Rooting
Rooting the phone is as simple as installing a app,
just install kingroot apk from below and install it
open it, follow on screen instructions
Question?
Hey do you know if there is a recovery for this device? I really need one thanks

Alright thanks for the reply though
maybe there is somebody able to make one, and would be nice to know if xposed was running than?! I read on some reviews that it should get marshmallow, can anybody confirm that? and what about the promised roms cm and miui?!
thanks man.
how much is left in the internal memory, for apps? is it a one partition system, or two?
5,04 gb is left, one partition.
Nobody interested in doing some development for the xfire?
There is a new official rom for the xfire.
http://www.needrom.com/download/bluboo-xfire/
Did not note any (visible) changes.
How to get this phone with $50, it costs more than $70 in all stores?! Thanks!
Maybe you heard about it...
Meizu is releasing mx5 pro mini soon...
This is what I believe will be the best Mi4c's opponent... Anyone here had or has any meizu to share the experience of having a meizu vs a xiaomi...
A while ago I've been tempted to buy the mx4 but for some reason I was afraid to go for it while for the Mi4c I didn't even think twice... I had to buy it no matter what... Maybe I'm a weird guy
Hmm it's just rumours though, I wonder what the final specs be. Won't beat Mi4C software-wise anyways because Meizu locks all of their roms and the bootloader :\.
Is that the 4.7" phone? 1080p screen but mediatek cpu
A friend of mine owned the MX4 Pro. He said the biggest downside was the Flyme OS. It used to have so many bugs.
But specswise it was a great phone. Even the fingerprint sensor used to be one of the fastest.
I have Meizu Note 2 and it's good. There's an option for it to be rooted so it's kind of easy and it's affordable, too.
Mediatek MT6797 Helio X20 look like an interesting SOC. The top performance is pretty much defined by the 2xCortex-A72 and Mali-T880 MP4 at Antutu score at 70,000.
I am more interested in the efficiency of the Tri-cluster. http://heliox20.com/ has some really nice graphical info

Tri-cluster:
Yes till now only rumours... But if these specs are real it'll be another nice machine... And the X20 looks powerful... But I also think I've seen somewhere and it will cost more than Mi4c... But definitely is nice to still have smaller but powerful devices because not everyone likes 5.5/6.0 phablets... To me, 5.0" is perfect size if fited in a compact body like Mi4c.
Anyway, so it means that there isnt much to do regarding costumization in meizu's? That's a NO GO for me... :/
Custom roms would be non existent like Samsung's exynos based phones
That phone will cost at least $400 and at least $500 to import. It isn't an opponent of the Mi4c, it is an opponent of the Mi Note Pro.

I dont think it'll cost that much... That's not price for a brand like meizu in that category... I've read that it's around 300 and if it's the case it will the 3gb version's opponent... Anyway, IMO it will be very hard to beat the Mi4c... This phone is just too good to be true... I wouldn't swap my mi4c for any phone available in the marke right know... And I mean no phone really...
I think it's not a direct opponent of 4c. It'll also cost more.
(Just have a question, does anyone know if it can run android? Also, if these are so cheap, why are smart phones SOO expensive? they have basically they same/similar specs!!?))

Some months ago, you might have previously read about the $9 C.H.I.P, world’s cheapest computer, that was made by a company called Next Thing. Well, last week, C.H.I.P lost that title to the Raspberry Pi Zero, the new cheapest computer in the world.
Last week, the latest issue of a computer magazine known as The MagPi was released, and as a world’s first, this magazine comes with a free pc—literally stuck to the cover. It is the latest Raspberry Pi release, weighing only 9 grams, known as Pi Zero. It also goes on sale world wide for only $5.
Pi Zero is a tiny gadget and contains the first generation Raspberry Pi’s BCM2835 chip, safely overclocked to 1GHz. Pi Zero packs the same GPU as the regular Raspberry Pi, and comes with 512MB RAM. It runs Linux, and runs all the applications and programs any other Pi will—including Python, Sonic Pi, Java, an internet browser, and way more. You can run a media center, use if for teaching programming, or embed it in a project—and it fits in your palm! The specs of the previous record holder, the CHIP were also similar: It had a 1GHz Allwinner R8 Cortex A8 processor with a built-in Mali400 GPU, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage [missing in the Pi Zero]. It additionally encompasses a micro USB port, composite headphone/mic port, Wifi and Bluetooth [also not present natively in the Pi Zero].

1. i dont know if you can run android on it.
2. there so cheap because they use parts that are obsolete. the same way these knock off, off brand junk phones are cheap. many times they use out dated parts no one wants any more, so you can pick them up for pennies of the value when they were first developed. basically you may be able to get 10 chips for $1, where they once cost $50 each (just a guess), because there is no demand for them any more.
3. you get what you paid for, or not in this case, a piece of junk. not even worth its recycle value in my opinion.
new technology isnt cheap, therefore better phones and computers are expensive. but if your happy with years old technology, that really no one wants, and is slower than a snail on Quaaludes, im sure you can pick one up all day long on some of these shady foreign sites, most of the rest of us dont want them,
then the real problems come when you cant figure out how to root you shiny new piece of mastodon dung. or you botch the software and there is none to fix it.
i get to see all these post of sad faces and tears pleading for help. then turned to angry faces when there is none...
yea, i went a little off topic, and maybe ranted a little but the same would apply to a $5 comp, as a $5 phone.
but hey, thats just my opinion, i could be wrong.....
