i was just wondering what the deal is with trying to change the color of the letters and numbers on the taskbar.. i remember reading somewhere that it causes a bootloop but has there been any progress on that?
thanks!
Not sure about the boot loop rumor, but its almost near impossible to change. you have to deodex .odex files to get to the actual file to make the change. The problem is the .odex files can be deodexed, but reassembling them is more difficult. Trust me, im still trying to find a way to get this done.

I was able to un-odex the file and see the code I needed to change. The problem fo rme was re-odexing the file. I un-odexed the file on the phone and then used utilities to re-odex on my PC. I wonder if I need to re-odex directly on the phone to create a valid file. Has anyone tried this yet?

Hi,
I am new to Android development but not new to Linux. I am looking for a little introduction on how to root a device initially (suppose nobody had rooted it yet).
Can any devs chime in with the details as to what they are doing? If you take the HTC Evo for example, everybody starts out by flashing a modified PC36IMG.zip -- specifically, what did the the dev do to that image? Decompile and modify source? Modify code in a hex editor? Use an exploit?
Thanks
I've got unrooted official 2.2 device and I don't want to root it. The only thing I'd like to achieve is to remove some stock applications. While I can't remove apk files I thought about upgrading them to some empty versions without activities and intents.
I can prepare such upgraded apk with modified manifest without problems. The problem is to make an actual upgrade. From what I read the apk needs to be signed with the same key as the original. I get 'already exists' error which probably means the same resource but different certificate.
Is it possible to hack/resign such a file to be able to upgrade the stock application?
I would assume this is a simple matter but I could be wrong. No access to nandroid or anything of the like on this device(Toshiba thrive). But we do have a system dump on the computer.
On that note: Since we have access to an unlocked fastboot, theoretically we could take a system dump, add the appropriate root files, turn it back into a .img file and flash? or is there a fundamental flaw in that plan that I'm missing?
Edit: Are there any folders from the system partition that an adb system dump doesn't grab? Wouldn't want someone to have a chance of bricking their phone doing this.
I would also like to know how to do this. I am willing to risk a brick to get root on the thrive.
I am trying to manually edit my root files using root explorer.
And I am trying to find this framework.res/values/bool.xml I can't seem to find the values folder i have been trying to locate it for hours now please help
