I just tried it and I'll be keeping it. I have Hangouts as my default sms app on my phone using google voice and this sent my message via gv on hangouts. I've been looking for such a thing. Thanks for bringing my attention to it.

I'm assuming it uses whatever you have set as your default on your phone.

Does anyone know how to disable SMS from going to the Hangout app on an IPhone? Since I have an Nexus 5 now and all SMS,MMS go through Hangouts. When I send a text to my wife they go to her Hangout app instead of her default messaging.. She doesnt want them to the Hangout app she wants them to go to here regular messaging app like it did on my SGSIII. We have Hangouts so we can be able to video chat when Im at work.

Can't you just use another app for your texting? Handcent is nice. You can probably even find the ole standard Messages app easy enough.

its strange that this issue would even exist. if i use hangouts to message my wife, and she's using the stock android messenger, my texts don't go arrive via the hangouts app on her device. i dont know why it would be different on an iphone. i wonder if its a setting on your wife's iphone hangouts app. you check? the issue is definitely with the app/device on her end. i'll do some looking around.

My best guess is that this has something to do with iMessaging. But I don't know what or how, if so.

agreed. i kow nothing about apple stuff except that when my wife finally switched from apple devices, it was a total pain in the ass. her phone, even with the sim card out, would intercept her text messages. this prevented her from getting any texts on her android. had to straighten that out. what a joke.
there must be something in her system settings, imessage settings or hangouts, etc. i'd start looking there.
I fixed the problem, I need to text to her number not her email. Email is for hangouts, number is for standard texting on IPhone. Thanks for the help guys.
In 99.9999% of cases I do not want to message someone on google+. Is there anyway I can remove all the google+ integration from the hangouts messaging app and use it only for sms? Or do I need to get a different sms app?
Sorry, just got the Nexus 5 last weekend so I'm still learning everything about it.
get a different sms app. There are many on the play store you can use, you aren't limited to using Hangouts if you do not want to, for SMS.

hold down the contact you want to remove then select "remove" or "delete", I forget which it is but that's how it's accomplished.

In the settings in the app just sign out. It'll be SMS only at that point.

Yup, you hold the contact name and select "Hide contact".

I agree with you. I use the textra app precisely because it doesn't go through hangouts or Google.

Just in case other people find this thread, trying to avoid all the google+ stuff, when using Hangouts for SMS, Google has since released Messenger. Seems to have a few kinks to iron out, still, but it has to be better than Hangouts. Plus, I hate having to say, "hangouts," all the time.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging
The problem with signing out of hangouts is that I don't get hangouts messages from the web app. I want to receive both, just without the suggestions for messaging random google+ people as suggested by google.
I can't seem to be able to send or receive emojis from friends with iPhones. Is there any way to do this? I am on sprint btw.
Thanks

Are you using hangout or an other app?
I use textra mainly but I've tried with Go SMS and hangouts as well but nothing works :/
I did get one once when I was in a group message with some friends. could it be an MMS issue?

I am on Hangout only and only get the code and no the image
Has anyone been able to start a text message on the watch using Hangouts instead of the default watch app for messaging? I use Google voice so need to use hangouts for all texting.
I know I can rely to hangouts messages received on the watch... But can't initiate new texts on the watch. Any message started with watches messenger app results in failed send.
When I get a Hangouts notification on my S3 - I can push the reply button but then it doesn't give me a keyboard to actually type in a reply - it just goes away
Try installing Android wear app if you haven't already. Seems there might be a dependency.

It is not Android Wear OS, it is Tizen OS.
So nope.
There is a strange effect, where people have found that installing the Android Wear app on their phone and launching it once and then just hitting home to leave it, helps with using Hangouts on the S3. Strange, but has been reported here.

+1 strange but it does work. I had Hangouts working in that manner on my S2 after I installed Android Wear on phone.

I started using the Blackberry Hub app and this allows me to see messages from Google Hangouts on the new Samsung Watch. It also allows me to reply from it. You don't need to install anything on your watch. Blackberry Hub is $1 a month after 30 day trial but I think is worth it until Samsung comes up with a native way to push the notification.
-EDIT: sorry I think this is what you were looking for, should had read it better first.
they are def right. download android wear on your phone and just open it up. dont even need to set anything up. just close it after it opens. i can reply to hangouts no problem ever since i read and did that a while back.
Aussie user on --> MHA-L29C636B158 here and I've currently got a case going with Huawei for an issue where SMS's sent via Google Voice are not logged to any SMS app. They send successfully but there's no trace of them in Huawei Messaging app or any SMS app.
Have confirmation from another Aus user on same firmware that they have the issue. Wondering if it's a problem on other variants? Can't seem to find the issue mentioned in any posts here on XDA.
Cheers all

To send SMS with GV u either have to use the Google voice app or hangouts. Which one are u using? What do u mean logged? U mean once u hit send it sends but doesn't show in the app?

Yep, the latter. Using Google voice and then voice command "sms contact_name".
Once you've told Google Voice to send the SMS it has indeed been sent successfully but that particular message doesn't exist in any SMS messaging app. Go to Huawei Messaging or any other SMS app such as Android Messages you have installed and the GV sent SMS doesn't exist...

Thanks virtyx. Did uninstall/re-install fix the issue? What firmware r u on? I send and receive sms's from the car a fair bit with Google voice so it's a bit annoying to have no record of sent sms's done with GV. Apart from this am loving the phone Cheers

I'm on stock c636b172
I didn't reinstall don't really need it.
I just use the voice icon in my messaging app to send it, works that way.

Yep righto. Guess I shouldn't be too excited about B172 possibly fixing the issue then! (which I'm hoping to get OTA soon).
If anyone else can comment on if they've seen this issue (or do a quick sms via GV for me to test it) it'd help me hugely with my case with Huawei which is currently moving at a snails pace... Twice already I thought I'd gotten through level 1 but it seems that's where it's still at...
Cheers
