HTC One S - soft brick (neither system or recovery are working) - HTC One S

Hello ,
Summary: HTC One S is stuck on white HTC logo screen (see image) and neither system or recovery are working.
Detailed history:
I have been running Cyanogen 10.0 on my phone and CWM (5.something) for over 18 months . One day I wanted to wipe my phone and when I was inside CWM by accident I wiped /system.
After that the phone would go into a bootloop but I could still access CWM recovery. I tried flashing Cyanogen 10.2 (first boot.img and then cm-10.2.0-ville.zip) but it didn't work
Then I've found on this page (wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_ville) that the minimum supported recovery to use Cyanogen 10.2 is ClockworkMod 6.0.4.8.
I've updated CWM but then phone wouldn't even go into recovery anymore:
Code:
./fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.8-ville.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.016s]
booting...
OKAY [ 0.002s]
finished. total time: 1.019s
I've tried flashing several other recoveries but the problem persisted

Your phone still runs HBOTT 1.13, try to update it to 2.15 and recoveries should work again.

Thanks LS.xD.
I didn't upgrade HBOOT, but your message put me in the right track. I believe I wasn't able to update recovery and/or ROM because of a new kernel that was incompatible with my HBOOT.
So simpler solution was to just install an old recovery and ROM from late 2012.
This is my secondary phone so didn't want to spend too much time with it.
Thanks once again.

[Q] Desire S problems after flashing RUU

Hi Guys.
Before i start i want to mention that i searched everywhere and basically all these technical guide's and terms makes me even more confused and i don't really know what to do with this problem i have.
Ok here we go, last night i S-Off and Rooted my cousin's HTC Desire S with (revolutionary-0.4pre4 and Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed).
-Revolutionary-
SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-6.98.1002
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M

So far so good, this all worked fine. No problems.
After that i installed the "RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.5_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_219480_signed"
It was successfully flashed but here is where the problems started, after this i got the famous "stuck on white background with green HTC Logo"
Now to make things worse, i cannot access SD Card from the phone and it will not recognize my phone anymore from my PC (with ADB drivers installed).
The only thing that does work and recognize my phone is the "Fastboot USB" mode on my phone along with the "
ROM Upgrade Utility (RUU) - Aruwizard.exe"
I got a tons of errors and problems.
1. HBOOT gives
SD Checking...
Loading... [PG88DIAG.zip]

Loading... [PG88DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading... [PG88IMG.zip]
2. in Recovery menu the following problems occur

Wipe data/factory reset gives
E:Can't open /data/cwpkg.zip
E:Can't open /data/cw.prop
E:Can't open /cache/cwpkg.zip
E:Can't open /cache/cw.prop
Apply update from sdcard gives
-Invalid Operation-
Also i seem to have lost a few options in recovery after the RUU like "install zip from sd card" etc
My question is : Is there anything that can fix this or did the RUU bricked it completely?
I believe before flashing you were supposed to do a downgrade HBOOT using ENG HBOOT
Atleast thats what i did!
Revolutionary hboot has protection to prevent it from being overwritten, the way to change the hboot is to write it through recovery, but you also need to flash a recovery option (if none is available), through fastboot.
Basically, check if CWM or EXT4 are installed, if yes flash hboot through recovery (see the last 10 pages of the ENG HBOOT thread), if no, flash recovery through fastboot (see google), once recovery is installed, flash hboot, then proceed with RUU.
I tried this as well
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958968
But no luck either
fastboot oem rebootRUU (Gives grey HTC Logo on my phone)

Most other commands just give a "(bootloader) [ERR] Command error !!!" so i just ended it with "fastboot reboot"
So my guess is that is must have something to do with that HBOOT thing yes.

I don't know if i can put the other eng hboot back

Where can i find a recovery.img for the Desire S?
I found a whole list here but i don't know which one to pick?
download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries
i tried "recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-desirec.img"

Problem now is, when i select "Recovery" from the hboot menu.. it gets stuck also at the White background / green HTC Logo screen. so now my recovery part is broken also?
Its all working now, i used the wrong recovery image at first.
I got clockwork recovery to work and from there i could do the HBOOT ENG and a pre-rooted RUU
xAutobot and Zeekiz, thanks for your help. Much appreciated!

i have exactly the same problem but i do not understand what you did to fix it...
do i need a program for my pc? what recovery did you use? just a simple explanation of what you did because im worried i cant get my phone to work again and im not necessarily a tecnitian... please
I can't remember anymore tbh its been a long time since i did this.
But it had something to do with the right recovery file for your phone i think.
at the clockworkmod rom manager website you can download it.

What you need is, first:
- change the revolutionary hboot for an engineering hboot to allow RUU to overwrite it.
--> https://www.box.com/s/8a14444cd1dc4c91f077
This file contains both original and overalpharevx .img (6.98.2000) you should use this one first. You could use fastboot, android flasher or the PG88IMG.zip (the easy way) included to do that.
when it's done you can safely run the RUU and go back to stock (s-on)
or
you can flash 4ext or clockworkmod using fastboot and enjoy your custom rom.

legal action.
and that is all, ONE S not respond, only restart to HBOOT and bootloader. Probably I can't flash CWM.

I have worked on it for two day
Please, HELP me! Thx
**Sorry for my english**
error 155 can mean several things.
Try to run the RUU from fastboot, That usually clears up the 155 error
If not, let us know and we will find some other solution.
If you think, launched the phone in fastboot and on PC run RUU so it's the same, error 155.
ICS doesn't work so device stay in HBOOT and fastboot.
Have you relocked the bootloader before running the RUU ??
RUU's wont work unless bootloader is locked, To lock it open a command window, navigate to the location of all your adb / fastboot files and type:
fastboot oem lock
Then run the RUU again
I do it but fastboot in PC wrote:
c:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot oem lock
...
(bootloader) Lock successfully...

Boot into recovery and flash root package twice https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69014495/CWN-SuperSU-v0.87.zip
Then all done you are rooted, Enjoy flashing some customs ROMs
so all make for guide but device show error after flash cwmrecovery.img under fastboot adb
writhing this:

You're not getting the phone to correct screen when flashing. You want help? RTFM = Read The Fricken Manual, in case you didn't know. Get any YouTube video that shows flashing through fastboot, and see that YOU'RE DOING IT WHILE YOUR PHONE IS ON HBOOT SCREEN INSTEAD OF FASTBOOT. I hope that the caps will make you pay attention this time around. The error you're getting ("... malformed") makes it 100% certain.

Well , first of all unlock your bootloader >>> says very clear there >>> *** TAMPERED *** then under that *** RELOCKED *** .
Once you unlocked it ... check this post here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543588 and get a rom for your device .
From what says in your post , Mar 15 2012 and versions of HBOOT , Radio , etc ... my guess is that RUU_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.78.401.2_Radio_0.16.31501S.17_2_10.23.31501S would be fine for you .
I'm not sure if your CID will be a problem to write another recovery image so download that rom version and get from it what you need ( recovery , etc ) . Even so ... i think you should be able to flash TWRP 2.2.0 recovery and use a custom ROM ( TrickDroid 7.0 for example ) .
If need , you can also change your CID to Super CID ... this would alllow ya to write any rom ... check this post for more info >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671396 .
Yes CID would be a problem, i've changed it to HTC__001 to load the europe ruu...

ADB only works if phone is booted or booting and ADB is activated in settings on the phone, and in a custom recovery like CWM.
Fastboot only works in bootloader mode, when it says FASTBOOT just like when you first tried flashing that recovery.img. Test with
Code:
fastboot devices
Your command was correct but it failed because your bootloader was relocked like Equlibryum said. Try unlocking it again with
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
if it doesnt work you have to unlock again. I believe you can van reuse the Unlock_code.bin HTC emailed you the first time e.g.
Code:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
Not sure if you have to be in any special mode to run the RUU, if memory serves me right either just at homescreen on booted phone or in bootloader.
Also you need only fastboot access to change CID.
To use adb you have to enable "debug usb" in developer options (opzioni sviluppatore->debug usb)
Then connect the phone to your pc (it must be on), open cmd and use the command
Code:
adb devices
to see if the phone is effectively connected
Also remember when you change CID you have to request another unlock_code from htcdev

Then unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and then a custom rom, i sugguest you trickdroid (stable and looks like the stock one).
If you are unconfortable using cmd you should use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604677
After that your phone should boot fine.
Then if you want you can change your CID through adb and install the ruu or simply keep trickdroid.
PS: if you want to give thanks, hit the thanks button
also uncheck fastboot under settings/power on phone
and do you have all your drivers/files for fastboot/adb installed in your fastboot.exe folder
make sure you are in that folder in command window for fastboot commands to work and booted into fastboot on phone

I can't uncheck fastboot under settings/power my phone start only in bootloader and don't go in recovery.
I'm not able to use the ADB or FASTBOOT command because the the device is NOT CONNECT, but the driver and the sofware are correctly installed. I think the only way for resolve in the correct RRU for TIM__401 but is impossible to find it.

I believe in order to change your CID you need ADB. got a classic chicken or egg situation here.
I believe the only way you could get this to work is to get fastboot to work. then you could unlock bootloader, and install recovery and rom as they said already. Sometimes you have to try your phone in a different usb port so windows will be forced to reinstall the drivers or you need to delete the drivers from device manager and try again

get fastboot to work. then you could unlock bootloader, and install recovery and rom as they said already.

[Q] my phone is stuck at HTC logo

Hi all,
Please help. Currently my phone is stuck at HTC logo. Last week, I've upgraded my phone to 4.2.2 and Sense 5 via OTA. I have never root and S-OFF. Sense 5 was not ok for me. The font is hard to read and keyboard is hard to type. I love original Sense 4+ that came with my phone. So I tried to downgrade it. Without knowing what is S-OFF and HBOOT (now I knew), it stuck at HTC logo and won't go anywhere. I tried to flash stock ROM also custom ROM back but no hope.
this is the step I've done.
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip PL99IMG.zip
And here the message I got:

there is nothing wrong with the phone u have to know how to flash a rom. first of all unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery then look for the stock sense 4 rom and flash it. even doe u have downgraded u will have to cut off your ota updates because it will keep prompting u to download it. dont ever flash ruu on your phone if you dont know wat ur doing

Hi daorderdillon,
Thanks for your answer. I've done as you told.
- unlock the bootloader (fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin)
- flash a custom recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img - I used TWRP 2.6.3.0 as recovery.img)
- look for the stock sense 4 rom (I used the first ROM from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2157029)
- flash via adb (fastboot oem rebootRUU --> fastboot flash zip PL99IMG.zip)
It still stuck at HTC logo.
Second tried, I copied PL99IMG.zip to SD card then boot into HBOOT mode and let it install. Nothing change, still stuck.
Third tried, I installed ROM via TWRP menu and again, same error.
Could you please guide me which step I missed?
Thanks in advance.
Dear All !!!
My phone is back! Very very happy!
To share with the one who have the same problem, this is what I did.
- flash CWM recovery
- following this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2185799
- flash boot.img
- enter recovery mode
- install kernel_wwe.zip
.- restart your phone
- factory reset
- that's all
I would like to say thank you to all of you that try to help me.
it2007me Without you thread, my phone still brick.
