I would like to root this phone to start out with. But I am not too experienced with this although I did have my fun rooting and installing custom ROMS on the A855 back in the day. (like its such an ancient phone by now, it was so much simpler then) Can anyone instruct me on the newest rooting methods for this particular phone in a thorough step by step detailed manner in layman's terms please? with this said I am not computer illiterate and consider myself to be fairly keen with technology this is just an area I have yet to become experienced in. Will anyone help me?

Hi everyone,
I am really tired of waiting for SD Card support and USB support on my Xoom, so I have decided to take matters into my own hands. First let me say, I love my XOOM, but I am by nature an inpatient person. My wife would say that of course is NOT my only character flaw. LOL! That said, I purchased my XOOM on launch day and have been waiting and waiting for the 4G upgrade and the SD Card slot to become functional. I have now grown tired of the wait and would like to root in order to get the SD Card functional, USB support, overclocking etc. This is my first Android device, although I have since switched my phone from a Windows Mobile device to a Thunderbolt. I have no experience rooting, but I am comfortable with tech and computers, so now I would like to embark down that road. However, I just did the 3.1 update over the weekend and was reading about a way to flash 3.1 on a rooted device without losing your root. This is what I would like to do, but after posting a similar thread in the Motorola Xoom Forums, the suggestion was made that I post these questions here. There was some debate as to whether it was possible to root my device right now since I already did the 3.1 update and the feeling was that I might have to wait until a rotting solution for 3.1 was available. I am not quite sure if this is the cased, so I was hoping for some direction from the experts here.
Can you guys point me in the direction of a link on the net that will explain rooting and how to do it and let me know if I can root my 3.1 Xoom? YouTube video would be ideal for instruction, but I would like to read up on the basics and the nomenclature so I understand the terms that are thrown around pertaining to rooting. I also would like recommendations of what kernal you all recommend and what other apps I will need, such as, Titanium Backup, Clockwork Recovery, etc. in order to achieve these things.
Thanks a Ton! I am very excited to join the rooting community.
Steve
Hey mate, the "ROOTED" community not rooting first off lol. Moving on tho. Check this link out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89lQpJJ7zBw . Rooting a device is typically pretty simple and easy. The fact that u want to learn is ofcourse greatly appreciated on a site like this as those that just want it handed to them dont tend to get far. If u need additional help feel free to pm me. I dont have a xoom but the vid i linked seems pretty straight forward. I have a MT4G
Okay this may be redundant but let me try. I'm new to this site and new to the whole androids modding.I was thinking of buying the star x26i or the star note i9220 dpad. I'm really not sure where to start once I get phone. If I can't get the direction I think I can figure out the rest or at least search to get info. Any help will be appreciated.
Get started as in what exactly? Are you talking about rooting and custom roms?

as I see you are interested in ROM development then here is a best resource on this site to help you on this subject
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661770
I know this is a modding community so the majority of answers are just going to say root root root! But in all honesty, if you are brand new to Android, get used to stock for a bit before you jump into modification. Spend your time reading about your specific device while you play with it and if people are happy with their devices rooted and the process isn't too intensive for you, then give it a shot.

Thanks for all the input. I was trying to be sure if there was a step by step process on what to do.I am fairly new to android phones and want to learn the ins and outs. I'm searching for a new phone now and it seems like the ones I like need something to be done to them before I can use them. So I was trying to be sure of the process before I screwed something up. I like the suggestion of learning the phone 1st which will probably lead me to a name brand phone.I'm currently with boost mobile so my options are limited. Once again thanks for the info.
1. Root
*unlock bootloder* optional
2. remove bloatware
3. read about custom roms
4. go crazy modding
Enjoy stock for a while, Oh and heres a tip, On the process of rooting, You can easily brick your phone.
Meaning Of Brick - It will no longer boot up; You have to replace it.
Well, actually I'm just looking
I googled "Rooted phone, what next?" and got several helpful sites and threads. Most of which lead back to XDA. Although I had a fairly clear goal in mind; I wanted ICS.

I got the x26i and I rooted it with Bin4ry it worked really well don't forget to install drivers.
Leave a thumbs up if I helped you.
There's a solid chance this is a stupid question, in which case feel free to ignore me entirely. I recently picked up a One X, and am crazy in love with the device. My only niggling issue is that all the new One X's at my local store are already at 2.20. And I am sad.
I've been doing a bit of Googling, and would like to at least attempt to learn a bit more about Android and what goes into trying to find a root process for this bad boy. I have little Android experience (user experience rooting my Captivate and the girlfriend's Galaxy S3 and flashing ROMs... so nothing likely pertinent to finding a loophole). And I have a ton of Linux experience (working as a sysadmin, though not 100% sure it'd beneficial to this, but I'm hoping).
Anyways, long post short, I was wondering if anyone here could help point me in the directions of some resources and/or things I could be doing/reading to learn what goes into the whole process and, possibly, so that I could help dedicate what little talents I have into helping out. Again, I know I have little to no Android experience, but I've tinkered with every device I own, and would like to at least try.

finding root is all about finding exploits in the write protection of the file system and injecting the su binary into /system
since you are experienced in linux you're in good shape. You may want to PM beaups and see what he's tried and bounce some ideas around we also have a root think tank thread in General. Welcome to the Cause!

Hello, I am thinking about rooting my HTC one mini. I know there are millions of threads on here and Google but I still have some basic questions that I can not find the answer for, so if you could help I would be very grateful.
If I were to root my phone, will the appearance be any different? And also would it change anything unless I actually do it manually?
I do not want to do it and then discover I do not like it or that I am above my head, I know most people will at well do not do it then but I have read a lot and I am curious, thanks on advance for any help.
Thanks
No visual changes. Rooting is basically the process of accessing the phones operating system to give you more control over the system, performance and settings. You can then add a custom Rom (this will most probably change the look of your phone, give better performance and battery... Maybe!) gives you greater freedom to install speciality apps But as soon as you root, your warranty is void, and you may brick your phone if you do not follow instructions step by step.
Hi.
I'm a novice when it comes to computers and smart phones. Based on my research I am convinced rooting my phone will give me more "power" in the verse. Moreover, I've been told rooting my phone is easy. So easy that a child can do it. Well, I have found it anything but easy. I have follow the "moto chopper" way and it didn't work. I got a "adb not recognized as an internal or external and a blah, blah.
At this point I'm thinking if I continue without expert help I will most likely destroy my phone. I don't want to do that. This is why I joined this forum. You guys seem to know what you're doing. So if anyone feels a little mercy and compassion for ol' Jackknife, I would appreciate any help or advice you might give.
Thank you.
It is easy for some, not easy for others. I have rooted a Toshiba AT100 tablet before, but now trying Huawei P6 and running into problems. this is a great place for all those in the know-how.

what phone are you using? without knowing that there really isnt much anyone can do.
on a more generic level, try searching google for how to root "phone model here"
or try the computer program "Vroot" which works wonders.
and a piece of advice: dont agree to any superuser requests unless you know exacly what you are doing. once you have rooted, you can totally destroy your phone without meaning to, so you have to be really careful.
Thanks

Your reply has just put the fear of "rooting" in me so I have decided to proceed with extreme caution. To answer your question: I have a Samsung SG4 Galaxy. (SPH-L720T)
If you need more info please let me know.
Thanks

As far as I'm concerned rooting is a myth, a fantasy produce by the virtual world. I tried vroot and it didn't work. Answer me this: why root my phone? I did enough reading to understand that by rooting it could potentially open up a world of goods to me. Is this true? I was convince of this at first, but with each new attempt doubt is creeping in. Plus the fact that if I am successful it would invalidate my warranty. What if something happens? Anyway. I never really got into forums but since you guys were prompt in your willingness to help me, I like this one. So thanks again, and maybe I'll keep plugging away it.

ok, heres the info. rooting gives you root access. that means that you can change system files, delete system apps, and basically do anything on your phone. it gives you complete control, with all factory safeguards down. thats useful for a lot of things, but its also dangerous- imagine what happens if you delete the system folders! many apps need root access,m though, so maybe it is worth it. its up to you. if you decide you do want to root, tell me and
ill try to help you.
thanks again/ rooting
