Extremely bad battery Life for 3 Days.

Hey,
3 days ago my mobile Internet flatrate ran out, I don't really think that this has anything to do with this but I try to provide as much information as I can.
My Nexus S was bought December last year and never really had any problems.
But now for 3 Days I have to charge that thing every damn day and the battery only lasts 18-19 hours instead of 2+ days. I haven't really used the phone in the last 3 days except from recieving calls and using whatsapp.
I have also not installed any apps in this time.
Here a screenshot from my current battery live. (Seems to be always awake)
(ICS 4.0.4 Rooted, Stock Kernel, Stock Launcher.)

What does it say is the top consumer of power on the battery usage percent chart. We can't help you very much without that. Also, grab BetterBatteryStats. That will help tremendously as it can damn near narrow it down to a single culprit.

Oh damn haven't even looked at it.
Says 45% Whattsapp
32% Google Services
will download better Batterystats now. But first I will just reinstall whatsapp.
EDIT: I just reinstalled Whatsapp and will now wait what the battery says in a few hours before I buy betterbatterystats.

Yeah. Those two are probably trying to "phone home" constantly, thus causing a drain. That may be what the issue is. From the looks of it, it looks like your signal isn't stellar either. How good is Whatsapp over EDGE speeds? The 3g connection just might not be strong enough, trying to search for a signal and also draining the battery.

Your guess is quite good, because in my room and ONLY in my room there are some severe problems with network connectivity for almost everyone.
(But battery life was good just a few days ago?)
I currently have no mobile Internet and only use WLAN. Just disconnected phone from charger and will now see how it runs.

If you have "no mobile Internet" and WiFi is off (as in screenshot), this is your issue. The android processes are trying to re-connect keeping your phone from deep sleep. In Mobile Network Settings, disable Data. Turn on WiFi, and set Keep WiFi on during sleep to Always. When you are out of WiFi range, disable background sync.

I've noticed something on 4.0, at least in my case. Huge wake locks for no reason in airplane mode. The phone home thing is most likely the cause. Google must have changed something in the way their apps operate because this never happened in gingerbread for me.

Well, so I have observed it a little more and battery usage by google services is now up to 70%.

But why the hell does this issue come just now? I have 4.0.4 since it came out and the issue just appeared about 5 days ago.

I wish I knew. I've got mine in airplane mode now, but no SIM in it. I've got a G2 as my daily driver now. The Nexus hasn't had any more of the airplane mode wakeups strangely enough though. Wish I knew what was actually causing mine.

So to report back again, I tried SpookyTunes suggestion for one cycle of battery life.
Then after recharging I went into the app management and force-stopped the google services framework and deleted the cached files afterwards.
So now I'm back to 3% battery usage (from Google Services Framework) for the last hour.

I would give it more time to see what it uses over the course of the day.

My Mom's GS3 is dying fast. I think it's LTE but I may be wrong.

OK, so my wife and I both have GS3's through T-Mobile and our batteries last very long. I'm a heavy user and get a fully day while my wife is a light user and easily get's two days. My Mom on the other hand has her GS3 through Verizon and her battery is dying in roughly half a day. She is not a heavy user at all. In fact, her old Droid 2 would last longer than her GS3 which really has her frustrated.
I think it may be due to the fact she doesn't get a good 4G signal at work and at home. In fact, she gets 1 bar at work if she's lucky. She also said the phone is constantly bouncing back and forth between 3G and 4G while at work. She took it to Verizon today and they swapped SIM cards to be sure that wasn't the problem. Obviously that didn't work because I'm posting here. I will see her on Thursday and she want's me to look at her phone.
Do you guy's think this is most likely the reason as to why her battery is draining so fast? Also, if it is. Would there be a way I can show her how to disable 4G so her battery lasts longer?

It's most likely 3G and 4G switching back and forth or a rogue app. For to turn off the 4G it can't be done without rooting I'm pretty sure.

No, it's because you have task running. I had the same thing happen to me. If you exit an application by pressing home, the program will continue to run in the background. I had gallery take up 38% of my battery life. If you press the back button, it will FC the application.

I'm on verizon as well and I find that my battery dies extremely fast. Full charge in the morning and by bedtime its just about dead, that's with moderate use. Some things that I have found to help is I generally keep bluetooth, and gps off unless I need either. I keep power saving mode on, and really minimized what Sync's through my accounts.
It's not exactly the answer you were looking for but it should help you until a more long term solution can be figured out.

Low tower signal will kill the battery very fast. Frustratingly fast. I have Verizon GS3, have very low signal at work, and I burn 8% battery per hour when phone is idle. With almost no use, my battery is down to 30% by time I go home.
At home I have good tower signal and my battery drops very slow in idle, maybe 1% per hour. At both work and home I have WiFi connected and set to keep WiFi on during sleep always. Therefore I don't think it's data traffic / sync causing the issue. Instead its hyperactive radio hardware or firmware killing itself as it constantly finds/loses tower connection. The only thing I've been able to find to reduce the drain is going into airplane mode... which is obviously a terrible option.
Hope Samsung can improve this self devouring nature in the future!

go to the playstore and download "phone info" open it and go to device information
Swith the " lte/cdma/evdo" into cdma auto (PRL)
I also turn off 4g at work due to weak signal

I believe its a signal search at where she spends most of her time. At my work the signal is very bad and the phone goes from 100% to 20% in 10 hours without even touching the phone. Now I turn on airplane mode and it never drops the battery.
She can disable the data and find out how much that would save her

First make sure it's not a rogue app by going into Settings -> Battery, your top 2 battery usages should be Screen and Cell Standby. As long as you don't have some random app eating away at your battery then it's definitely signal strength related. Does she have Wi-Fi available at work? If so make sure she connects to it. I have a Verizon S3 and the battery life on this phone is better than any Android phone I've ever owned (and I've had a lot). I leave GPS and Bluetooth on all day and can easily get a full day with mid to heavy usage. The biggest thing would be to get her on Wi-Fi if available. This will stop the phone from constantly trying to poll data off a poor signal and significantly increase battery life. If no Wi-Fi available, then the above post would come into play, Phone Info app and switch into cdma to keep it locked into 3g will help, but only if there's a decent 3g signal. If the 3g signal is weak also, then you're not going to help anything, and she will just need to remember to turn data sync off while she's at work.

Try switching batteries to see if she has a defective battery. If thats not the case, then make Verizon give her a replacement S3.

Add me to the list of people who think its the signal search in low service areas.. I disabled 4G with the Phone Info app and my phone lasted way longer than before..
Since you pointed out she has a low signal, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the culprit..

This is what I did, kept the old battery too...then they swapped me for a w S3. My battery is doing much better now.

Ahhh so it wasn't the battery itself?
When you got a replacement S3, did you go back to the same store where you had originally purchased them from or tried a different store?

I disabled 4G today at work with my stinky cell signal and my battery nose dived like usual. Therefore, if you have no signal, 3G/4G doesn't seem to matter. The radio hardware will still destroy itself happily.

Anyone know of a widget my Mom could use to disable data completely while she is at work?

Pull the task drawer down and uncheck mobile data. Why do you need a widget?

You might have a system process called "gsiff_daemon" draining the battery. I have that problem and others have reported that process has been draining their battery as well. Or it could be other have mentioned already, signal switching, rogue programs, etc.

Today at work I ran with mobile data off. I still had a really bad battery drain. Therefore the voice 3 g radio must be responsible. Not much we can do about that unless a new firmware comes out.

There's also an option in the settings>developer options to restrict how many processes are running in the background, and to kill an app after leaving it. The only problem I've noticed with the second option is that the fb app won't allow you to post a status, I think because it causes it to start a new activity, which kills the main fb activity when you leave it. But limiting the background stuff seems to have saved some more juice on top of only using 3g.

Naw man, at home I have good cell signal and have almost no idle drain. At work I have terrible signal and it drains like nuts. It's not an issue with apps, processes, services, etc.

[Q] LG G2 Battery concerns (AT&T D800)

Hello all.
I'm getting the feeling I'm not exactly getting the battery life I should be getting with this phone.
I had another LG G2 before the one I currently have now. I swapped it out during the 14-day return period. That one had screen flickering (which I now know that is due to content adaptive contrast etc.) and [aesthetic] the day after actually getting the phone, getting a scratch on it. However, with that day of having the phone, I felt as if I got better battery life compared to this one. That phone had Carrier IQ running on it when I didn't know anything about it. I only knew about Carrier IQ's problems once I had the current G2.
I'll post my battery results at the end of the current day from GSam, but attached are my current battery results at the given moment.
I have been using it actively since 6AM or so.
Screen at 30% brightness, WiFi on all the time. I have made the effort to disable all AT&T bloat and I have stopped Carrier IQ, LG Intelligent Agent or whatever its called and SmartCard.
I'm unrooted, totally stock (what comes out of the box). I have KNOCK ON disabled along with SlideAway if that helps.
No gaming has ever been had on this phone. Just Facebook, Messenger, and Chrome for browsing the web. I also listen to Google Play Music.
I talked on the phone with AT&T on Wednesday and they suggested a factory reset, and if it didn't fix it, to warranty the phone out...which would result in a refurbished phone and I'm kinda not okay with that because I paid for a new phone and I don't like having to get a refurbished one that is supposed to resolve my issue somehow. That's just me though.
Last night, I charged up to full while the phone was shut off. Factory reset my G2 and I still get this feeling I'm not really getting proper battery life.
Are these the type of results of what I should be getting? Not representative of a day actually out and about (which will be Monday as I have school then), rather at home. I will give stats of the end of the day use of Monday...at the end of Monday. Thanks in advance, and hopefully I have given enough info AND stats. I'm still sorta new to XDA.

I'm sorry, but you have 3 hours of screen on time and only used 40% of your battery. I think that is pretty darn good. I wouldn't be concerned with this. You are making me wonder about my device.. I have 62% left and only 1.5 hours screen time

Really? Huh. I just ..all the reviews claim high numbers...and with heavy usage of close to a day. People mention such screen time and more (4+), with getting upwards of 30 total hours of usage etc.
Have you disabled Carrier IQ?

No I haven't. I've only had the G2 for a couple days, coming from HTC One. Att is letting me try this phone out to see if I want to swap it after all the warranty exchanges I've had due to purple camera issues. I didn't know carrier iq was an issue, but I will look into it

Ahh okay. The G2 is a nice phone in terms of performance, functionality etc. Battery life was supposed to be a major feature of this phone because of the optimization and battery size...so that's why I'm concerned when others are seeming to get much better results.
If you don't mind me asking, why are they giving you a One for warranty exchange? I personally wanted a One before this phone, but it was cheaper, had better features, specs and battery life etc.
EDIT: just noticed you stated the purple camera issue. Sorry..I didn't know that was a problem with it though. Last I heard of such was with the iPhone 5's new sapphire lens...but that was fixed through a software update (somehow).

Yea the One is a great phone - I'm still not sure what I want to do yet! The problem is with most of the first months the phone was built. My wife has the mini and it was built in September- she doesn't have the purple issue. I could just send the One into HTC and have them fix the camera.. I am a little disappointed with the G2 shutter speed with flash on tho; but I am pretty sure this is fixable with a software update.

The G2 takes a bit of time in low light (if thats what you're getting at) etc. because its trying to suck as much light as it can. It does a great job because it takes its time...its just understandable why its doing that. That's why its quick and speedy in proper light (which isn't too demanding). I'd rather have proper exposure at the expense of time.
Yes, carrier IQ is exactly why. Do a bit of searching around on Carrier IQ on the AT&T G2...its the only carrier variant of the phone affected by it. It causes major wakelock and demands GPS even when you have done everything to disable location services. I also recommend, while you're at it if you haven't, to disable WiFi and mobile network connection under location access in settings.

I agree that I'd rather have a better picture than a faster snap When the lighting is good, the shutter speed is great - I posted a couple comparison shots on another thread about the One vs the G2.
As far as the CIQ - I disable IQ in Android system settings - as well as the wifi and mobile network location settings. Will see how this affects battery life.
I still think you are getting great battery life compared to mine - I'm down to 42% battery with 2hrs screen time.. I'm using Lux for brightness and it keeps the screen pretty dim compared to the built in auto brightness logic LG uses.

Ahh okay. I tried a similar thing where I uninstalled updates and reinstalled... Cuz I read that somewhere. But now I'm doing this. Will report back if I see any difference.

I can't seem to disable ciq using system tuner - the check boxes are all grayed out-- any tips? do I need the pro version?

I just do what you did earlier - go into Apps > disable IQ Agent running under Android system, go back, click Android system again and stop the actual service...and do that every time I reboot the device.
You can totally remove it I believe with root, but I have been aiming to refrain from rooting until my 1 year warranty with this phone is up

I average %5 per hour.

oh okay. I read people use system tuner app, but I'm not sure how as the check boxes for the running services are all grayed out so it isn't possible to uncheck them. unless a rooted phone is needed, I don't know, I can't find specific information on it.

D800, stock, full brightness (not auto), Wifi when indoors, 4G LTE when outdoors with wifi on, blutooth on all the time, mix usage.
These were taken on different days. I always have wifi, 4G LTE and blutooth on.
I notice a drop when I have a lot of data transfer or a lot of screen time, but overall it never made me complain, I only complained to myself when I pushed it to limit because I got spoiled by good battery life and I stopped the habit of plugging it all the time. Now when I pick up, it has 30% and it can still last few hours easily, whereas before %30 meant "oh ohhhhh"..

Okay, yeah. Nice stats. I'll see how things go so far with the past suggestion of Maps etc. but yeah I totally agree with 30% thing...its weird thinking that too. But I have adjusted...kinda.

Just a quick note on standby battery life - I used the phone until it completely shut off last night around 7pm or so.. at 10pm it was fully charged, so I pulled it off the charger. It is now 8AM, and the phone is still at 100%!! I did not get any texts/emails overnight, I left WiFi/4G on.. GPS stayed on along with Wifi/mobile network locations on.
When the phone shut off and I charged it, upon reboot, I did go into location settings and disable IQAgent.
I also removed some apps (Lux/GSAM), and reverted Maps to previous version. Not really sure if Lux or GSAM are a culprit or not.. I used GSAM on my One only because HTC removed the battery stats - LG has this in the battery info. Although GSAM is nice, it isn't really necessary unless drain is outrageous.
Let's see what today brings for battery life!

I know for many, the standby of the phone is said to be a killer. I might just remove GSam too. I tried out Lux BTW and I was really shocked just how dim the display got where it was even hard to see in a dark room
So far I haven't noticed any change in battery life while consistently using the phone. However I will say when I rebooted real quick last night, I forgot to take care of Carrier IQ and noticed that the battery was dropping incredibly fast. I then remembered I forgot to disable it, and then all was well. Just shows how much of a difference it makes!

Hey guys. I recently bought a GS6 and I love everything about the phone....except the battery! This is literally a deciding factor for me vs the iPhone 6.

This can also mean it's constantly searching for a better signal. Sometimes I don't get reception indoors but usually my reception is good.
Now, I would understand if my battery was dropping IF I had the screen on, but it's not. It's dropping a percent every 2-3 minutes.
Anyone have this issue and can combat it? My data plan reloads in two days so I can see if it gets better but if not, I will be switching to an iPhone....

Wow 1% every couple minutes? That is abysmal. Have you tried a factory reset?
If yes, have you installed something like GSam or Better Battery Stats to figure out what is using your battery?

Well, okay, honestly not THAT much but it drains really frequently...my phone will drain from 100% to 95% in about an hour/hour and a half without screen on time and only wifi connected. I have not tried those options.

When was the last time you restarted your phone?

Definitely a rogue app. Check battery stats and if google play services are high, you could try clearing data on it.

I'll try GSam or better battery stats. Is there a free version of better battery stats?

If you're on T Mobile I've read about a really nasty WiFi bug that's draining the battery. Try turning off WiFi calling. I'm in Canada and we don't have that here (I don't think) but it should be under settings-wifi-more. From there you'll have to find it.
I've also read turning off VoLTE makes a difference. Again, Canada, and we don't have it so I can't say for sure if it helps. To turn that off open your dialer, click more and it should be tucked away in your settings. Good luck!

Thank you for the reply! I have disabled wifi calling and VoLTE and yes, I am on USA T-Mobile and many seem to be having this issue. They say Lollipop 5.1.1 will alleviate this issue and I really hope it does because I love this phone but hate the battery.

Battery after recent update

Has anyone noticed since the recent update, battery seems to drain faster? Before, I went home with 75-80%. Now it's 65-75%. No changes whatsoever between.

In my case it seems to be a bit better, but it's still too early to say for sure... Try setting App power saving to always for as many apps as you can... The ones you dont use regulary ofcourse... This is my battery status at the moment:

I use WiFi on all the time, cause I'm 90% in a WiFi area. I've used it before the update, so usage is exactly the same.

I'm not sure if the update caused this, but fairly sure it did. I have my location set to Power Saving before the update and all was fine. It was set on High Accuracy after the update. So I've been using that ever since the update. Not sure why it did that, but now I'll be checking it after future updates. lol

I have serious battery drain when I'm on WiFi. If I turn it off my battery life seems fine.

Seems the same as before

That also happens anytime you use GPS as well the always scan for wifi being enabled and NOT disabled after you turn off GPS. Go back and check to make sure that is disabled, as well as every time after you've used GPS, or it'll drain your battery.

Is yours the exynos version? how are you able to get android system/android OS to be sub 10%??? those two combined on my SD820 are 50%! sub 10% is more in line with my Nexus experiences, which is how I believe it should be.....screen should always be the top user, but in my experience it's 3rd behind system and OS.

Yes, s7 exynos.
I didn't do anything fancy, no power saving apps or tweaks. Location on high accuracy all the time. At 15% I was at 7.5h sot and usually I plug in at that point. I just wanted to see where it goes. I use dark themes for apps when available but TouchWiz is stock. It was dark (evening here) and I disabled auto brightness (until 15% I used only auto) and lowered a little.
At times I also get higher Google services and Android Os usage, but it calms down after a while.
My previous charge cycle I got 6.5h using only mobile data (4g) with a 10% loss over night because Google services, witch accounted for 50% drain up to that point. After that it calmed down and the drain was normal.

I don't care to use the WiFi scanning, but it's also off. Here's a new battery shot and it appears (obviously) turning the High Accuracy GPS off is helping lol. But will see a week later.

bit off topic. but I'm curious about the new update, what has improved on your phone? I have it downloaded but I'm a bit skeptical to update since I'm still hoping for a root to be found and don't want the update to potentially prevent the future root. just curious whether it's worth to update or not.

I have no idea what's improved. I only had the phone for a day before updating.

Other than the security updates, I'm not sure. I don't notice anything other than what happened. Things are looking good as they did before the update.
