So I got my S6, and I love it.
However, I have found that sending photos via hangouts is screwy. All photos sent and recieved via hangouts on my s6 are extremely pixelated, and the orientation is not right most of the time. This is only for photos sent/received via google/hangouts and not photos sent/received via MMS in the hangouts app.
I also have seen that when viewing the same photos that look like crap on my S6 on my computer or old S4, they look find and their orientation is correct. It's just the phone itself.
Really weird, and kinda ****ty since its better for me to send photos via wifi since my office and home are in bad spots in terms of service.
Anyone else dealing with this?

I experienced the rotation issue, but as far as the pixelated issue goes, it's not hangouts. My friends and I tested it. When you send the file, hangouts will compress it, but not to the point that it seems very pixelated. You just have to let it load, give it a few seconds to render.
Didja peel the protective plastic off of the lens? LOL
I've had this as well. Hangout compress the pic which is stupid. I sent a friend a pic threw hangouts then emailed the same pic and the pic came out perfect when emailing

Hey guys,
Just flashed to 2.2 and its working great. Only annoyance is contact pictures no longer show up in the messaging app. They show up fine in contacts, but won't show in the message app. I've seen a lot of users with similar issues, but not many on Samsung phones.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Hmm just noticed this on mine as well.
Well the issue seems to be app specific. Downloaded Handcent and Chomp and they pulled the images perfectly fine.
It appears the messaging app no longer pulls pictures from linked accounts. Set one by hand on the main contact and it started pulling the picture so I guess it can be fixed with one of the Facebook photo sync apps. Annoying but seems like the only solution at the moment.
Is there a way to get the contact photos not to blurry? Every time I call someone or receive a call the photo is really blurry or grainy.
I have tried the method where you go into your people, and change the photo of your contacts to an actual picture of them that you have on your phone. But it never works. The photos always change back to the photo they have on Facebook and it looks horrible.
Crap!!! work area of the forums can you please move this to General.. I thought I was in that area when I posted the reply.
If you have a HTC Sense account on your phone you should sync your FB contacts through it. It will make the pictures much more clear. For some reason they look terrible when synced through the FB app.
This post really helped me however when I tried to sign up for Sense I couldn't get past the part that says I have logged in on my device. Any advice?

I know that if you sync your phone contacts with Google, then Google automatically resizes the photos, thus making them blurry. What I do is make sure all my contacts reside on my phone. No Facebook, no Google, just phone, and my contact photos are crystal clear.
So maybe I shouldn't sync with fb. However I love having bdays and events on by calendar.

This is an Android/Gmail bug. For some reason Google refuses to fix this even though there are several bug reports submitted on their support forums. Whenever syncing contacts using the Gmail service, your contact photos are resized to what is used by gtalk. I was never able to find a work around for this. I not syncing with Gmail contacts defeats the whole purpose. I've basically learned to live with it. It's pretty ridiculous how such an easy thing could be fixed though.

I agree. If Google is smart, they would keep the actual size of the photo selected and allow each program to resize it as needed. Not on the contacts page. Especially since all of the newer phones now are HD devices.
Hi
As the title saids, how can I made pictures in people app better?
They look nice when you see all contact thumbnail, but when I open single contact
or making a call they look terrible, I can see every pixel.
Is there any easy way to fix this, other than uploading hires photo of every single contact one-by-one?
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-4.0.html
Large photos
Android now supports high resolution photos for contacts. Now, when you push a photo into a contact record, the system processes it into both a 96x96 thumbnail (as it has previously) and a 256x256 "display photo" that's stored in a new file-based photo store (the exact dimensions that the system chooses may vary in the future). You can add a large photo to a contact by putting a large photo in the usual PHOTO column of a data row, which the system will then process into the appropriate thumbnail and display photo records.
EDIT:
FINALLY
a great app that fix resolution of contacts, haxsync, great, brilliant little app, uses facebook pictures
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.mots.haxsync
You would have to change as the ones Gmail saves on the server are low resolution.

I've tryed to change one contact picture on Gmail, I've put hires photo, but after sync, again its very low quality and ugly.
Same here!
Any solution to this?
My Galaxy S i9000 isnt on ICS yet, but i know this will bug me!
So as I understand:
To have a Hi-def contact image in the People app, we need to assign a new photo via our phones.
If we assign a photo via Gmail Contacts, we will end up with a low resolution image.
Thus this is not an Android issue, rather Google need to sort out the Contacts image function in Gmail

+1. i think google has to sort this out. maybe an option to choose HD image or low image.
Anyone find a solution to this? Only had my phone for one day and its already bugging me.
Same here.... Looking for a fix. I uploaded my own pic, but I DO NOT want to do this for each contact.
CSI enhance! But, other than that, there's no automatic way.
The contact images from Google+ are hi-res, however.
When I put manually hires pictures, after google sync, and installing other rom (also ics) and then restore contacts, again over google - they go back to low quality..

Yup. Notice that after ROM installs, the pictures get pixelated.
You know what i dont get? How does this not get noticed during testing? It seems everyone has this problem...no idea why its happening though
If that's how it was made, its not really a problem to them lol I use Ringo pro for my contacts and it uses higher quality pictures

I think they did notice it during testing. But the Android team is (probably) not the same as the Gmail team. This requires changes in Gmail, but they can't just go over there and say "fix this".
I do hope Google is working on this. I noticed it during the ICS introduction from Google as well: when they demonstrated the People app you could see a pictures of a seahorse that was low-res...
Meh, this doesn't look good: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=6b0562c425cc1f5d&hl=en . It's a post from a Google Empleyee who says they'll look into the problem. That was posted in november 2009
ICS is officially out, but still they are fuzzy :S
I experienced this issue from the very first day of my smartphone life. And google has not fixed it yet.
There are several other minor bugs that were not fixed since Eclair don't know why but how could google not know about those obvious issue and not fixing it...
try installing g+ app and then your contacts should receive better hi res pictures. Of course only the ones that have g plus as well.
I still can not belive how can they do something like this.
Every time someone is calling I see those pixels all over the screen :S
FINALY

But haxsync is not able to do custom links with your contacts. So if a contact in your Facebook does not have the exactly same name in your address book it does not work. My contacts do look a bit messy because of that app now...

What is everybody doing as a workaround for the blurry contact pictures problem that results from syncing your contacts with gmail?
Sense does a pretty good job of masking the problem in some versions, but it's terrible in AOSP ICS.
Are you all just putting up with it or have you disabled contact syncing with gmail or employed another workaround? I'm curious how everybody is solving this problem for themselves.

When you sync your contacts with gmail tho, doesn't it compress them and make them pixelated? Or does Haxsync bypass this somehow?
I just put up with it. I used to sync with syncmypix then disable the Google sync, but then I decided that having my contacts backed up was more important than having nice pics.
Curious to see if anyone has a good solution to this.
Been using haxsync now for the last 24 hours or so. It seems to work around the gmail sync problem. My pictures are significantly higher quality now, though they could still be clearer.
HTC broke the contact photos in ICS. I use Haxsync too.

It's a server side thing, the only possible 'fix' is if the Gmail team bumps up the contact resolution. The resolution was bumped up in Jellybean but it only works offline, so once you sync then you're back to low res crap.
I just deal with it though, can't be bothered to do something that should have been done in by Google in the first place.

Well that's a bummer. Oh well.
I remember reading somewhere that if you upload your contact pics directly to your Google account via web browser on a PC, the contact pictures come out clear on your phone.
But honestly who could be bothered to do that? Obviously not me since I can't confirm that this workaround actually works.

I tried that once and it doesn't make a difference, they will still blur as soon as you sync

I always use an app called HD Contact Photos, and donated a buck for the extras, it lets you use higher quality photos,up to i believe 512x512 ie Stock Photos for stock ICS and if you are using HTC, you can download Facebook and/or Twitter pics and those will be higher quality, as HTC did somehow break HQ FB pics in ICS
i keep high quality contacts on my SD Card and manually link them. They stay clear and perfect even with Google Syncing.. Though new ROM = lose them and have to do it again...
looking for a way to back them up.
My wife just picked up a Pixel, coming from a Samsung Galaxy S5. We noticed right away that MMS photos are very pixelated. They are compressed way more than they were on her S5. I didn't notice any settings to change the compression, but it's as bit annoying. Has anyone experienced anything like this?
It's just the app... I believe that googles messenger may descale or compress more than some others. Samsung's text app was one of the few things they got right... Try a diff app for text.

Thanks, I'll try Textra and report back.
No issues here using Google messenger. I'm on Verizon, my Pixel was purchased from Google store though.
Problem solved with Handcent Next SMS app. Tried Textra, and messages were taking over 10 minutes to arrive (even after playing with settings).
Glad something works better.. But just an FYI all text apps drop mms quality of photos. There are messaging apps that solely use data that won't or email if you truly want 100% of the resolution to send.

Are you by chance using a Pixel purchased from Google on Verizon's network?
I ran into this when I converted my Verizon HTC M8 to the Google Play version of the M8 by switching ROMs. There is a device identifier string inside of the framework-res.apk file and if Verizon's APN servers don't recognize it, their server sets a ridiculously low size limit on MMS (just a few kB).
This will probably require rooting your phone (at least temporarily) to resolve. Here is how I fixed it on the M8:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66007858&postcount=1108
Sorry that this is a bit OT, but is anyone having issues recieving mms? I cannot get mms at all, on project fi. What's weird is that I can send them just fine.
