If I buy a galaxy s6/edge phone in europe (SM-G920F / SM-G925F) , Does it have regional lock?
Do I have to speak 5 minutes with a local sim in order to unlock it?
can anyone confirm or deny?

No I dont think there will be regional locks, unless you are buying a carrier specific phone. If you are getting an unlocked version then there wont be any issue. The 920f only denotes that this is the european model, 920i will be for aus, ind, and singapore. It is just done so that samsung can make their shipments and updates more organized . It has nothing to do with regional lock. I bet I will be able to use the 920f variant anywhere (as it is global variant) . or even the I variant anywhere. I remember my friend buying a sprint galaxy s3 , and using it here in india.

S6 Edge owner here: I can confirm this one has regional lock. I tested it with a Dutch sim first (coming from Netherlands), 5 minute outgoing call, then put in a US sim from T-Mobile. This worked flawlessly (without the calling bit, the SIM was deactivated already
But yes, you do need a local sim from the region you bought it from and somehow make a call for 5 minutes. I did not try an incoming call - but the scary wording in the instructions that your phone might "fail" if you forgot to activate it with a local SIM did not give me the guts to try that out ;=)
About A reset or hard reset
Hi. I would like to know if I performa reset or a hard reset on my Galaxy S 6 Edge, will it be lockd again when it restarts? Do you know something about it?
Thanks!
I can confirm that the S6 has a Region Lock on it, as I still have mine locked and have been trying everything to get the stupid thing off, as I'm unable to do the 5min call. Can anyone help? Would flashing a firmware via Odin get rid of it?

I just received my 920f model today I have a One Plus and the s6 works after reconfig the apns on straight talk, but the signal is weaker and only 4g not lte like my One plus.. I dont know if I am going to sell the s6 or just keep it and wait for the One plus 2 to be released later this year. I just miss the bigger screen and my huge hands keep touching icons when I hold it in my hand. Guess I am having a bit of buyers remorse.

I ordered my G920F from Handtec including their region unlock service. They made a 6 minute call before shipping. To answer your question, yes it stays unlocked after a factory reset. I did a full factory reset the day I got it and the phone is still working on AT&T in the US.

So there is no carrier bloatware? How is your call signal and LTE with ATT?
Could you guys help me identify if this is a carrier region lock only or the lock is active on any S6/S6 Edge device. It would be great for everyone to learn about this, lets say situation.
is there anyone manage to unlock the S6 SM-G920F? so we can use other sim

You said your phone worked even after a factory reset. If the region lock is not retained after factory reset then will the factory reset resolve the problem of region lock . If I do a factory reset without making a 5 mins call from regional sim. Will it work ??

It doesnt mean factory reset can unlock the region lock, He means after unlock the region lock, factory reset will not relock the region lock.
Bottom line is all S6/S6 edge phones have a region lock on them. You must use a sim from the region the phone was bought in for 5 mins to remove this lock. There is even a big sticker on the outside of the box telling you this. Good look unlocking it as have not seen any posts with people being able to unlock the phone once they have moved to another region and failed to do as directed.

There is an app by chainfire called regionlockaway but I cannot comment on if it works or not. Certainly worth trying though if you are stuck.

Actually i got my bought a phone when i was in Netherlands, and i didn't read the sticker now i left Netherlands and now in Jordan, i still have my Netherlands KPN SIM card, but the point i can't make any outgoing calls, how to unlock now? if somebody called me , that will work? thanks in advance
Solution
For those of you who did not follow the instructions and got their phones locked, simply visit a Samsung mobile service center and ask them to unlock it. They have a nominal charge and can do it for you.
does (Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge SM-G925 Factory Unlocked Cellphone, International Version, 32GB, Gold) work in any carrier ??
i have this g920i that its regional lock and im in the USA, i dont have the sim card from where this dam thing come from. and i dont know where is it come from.
It said on it HECHO Vietnam on the back, but i dont have this sim anyway. i know the phone is unlocked because when i insert the sim it does not ask for any code to unlock.
I read so much all over the forum and i even called USA samsung regardding taking off this Region lock and no lock.
My question, if i flash a different country firmware, will it fix that region unlock? do u guys know of which firmware country since there is hand full of them.
Or any other way to take off this dam region lock off for someone in my shoes went thru that problem?
Thanks
You can unlock your phone region lock
Hi,
My first comment, I hope it helps.
If you can not make a call with a local sim card when you are in one of the countries of your phone's region;
You can still get the unlock code free from Samsung Customer care.
It worked for me!

Make a 5 minute call with a local simcard, your regionlock is lifted.

Is it an imported phone? You could try to order an EU sim online. Otherwise I don't know.

Hi, I've the same issue. As I found in SGN 3 forums you can try to write to Samsung supports all around EU and your own country.
I've tried the same but no luck here yet. Waiting for the response of Samsung Russia (EU sams customer care told me to communicate to sams russia)

I've also written to Samsung Russia and they forwarded me to Samsug service. Unlock from region lock cost 3000 rubles in Moscow (55 euro). I didn't try because in 2 weeks I am in Germany, so i will be able to unlock my smartphone by 5 min calling (my S6 from EU).
I'm facing the same problem here.
Just bought my galaxy s6 on spain (EU locked) didn't make the 5 minutes phone call and now I'm back to my home country (Brazil). I have asked a friend that is on EU to bring me an EU sim card so I can make the phone call from here, he is arriving next week, if this works I'll post here.
ps: I have tried to reach Brazilian Samsung services, but the said to me, that they didn't to any support to foreing cell phones.
I have the same problem - phone wasn't activated with correct sim (es).
I insert another country sim first and now even 5 minutes of calling with correct sim doesn't activate another network. I'm afraid that for activation I need to make call not only with correct sim in roaming but with correct sim in correct country.
You can simply go on Sammobile, download the ROM corresponding to your phone in Brazil region, for example, and flash it to your phone. That should let's you use your phone there.

Hello XDA community,
I purchased a Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) from Netherlands while on holiday, unaware of Samsung putting damn region locks on their phones until I returned home to Australia. Now I'm stuck with a $1145 brick that I can't use until I unlock it. I've contacted Samsung Support in Australia, Netherlands, UK and Korea, 2 of which didn't know any way of unlocking it, and the other 2 said I could put a code in it but I need to send them my receipt which I have lost, so they both said sorry, can't help. What am I supposed to do? I'd prefer not to trip Knox but if I have to I will.
#1 - I heard that normal unlock code sites don't sell regional unlock codes, is this true? And are there any that do?
#2 - Are there any ways of removing the lock by rooting? This is a last resort for me but if I have to do it I will.
Thank you for anyone who helps.
Not 100% sure but I read regional lock all u needed to do was make 5 min call with that Sim from where u bought it. Like I said not 100% on that.

I'm home now with no sim card from the country I bought it. If I get someone from there to ppost me a sim from that country and use it at home will that work? Has anyone done this? Or does the call have to take place where I got it?
I think no
The phone needs the Sim in it in that phone country network. From what I've researched

Don't forget it doesn't have to be a Netherlands SIM. It just has to be from the same region. AFAIK you could use a SIM from the UK or anywhere else in Europe but you will have to load it with enough money to make the 5 minute roaming call in Australia.
Please post experience with S7 SIM (carrier) unlocking here, specifically third party websites that offer an unlocking service.

yea man i called...they sent an email with instructions.. email stated this phone doesn't require an unlock code as it has a built in unlock app. follow the directions below blah blah balh
bottom line, it doesn't work. why? because there's hidden rules and crap that need to be met 1st by t-mobile. prepaid people need to spend at least 100 dollars in refills before the phone is eligible. post paid people need to have the phone active on t-mobile for a minimum of 45 days and your account cannot be cancelled during that time.
well seeing as how i'm on prepaid... i walked in, made a new customer purchase as a post paid user, then cancelled my line after i got my gear vr and netflix code... which wasn't even 30 days. I can't unlock my phone, So I'm now on prepaid gonna see if I can after 100 dollars in refills

I use ebay to get my unlock codes, unlocked maybe a dozen phones in the last few years and never had any issues with anyone.
A couple reliable sites I've used many times are www.unlockbase.com and www.cellunlocker.net . There's also a thread over on the s6 general forum of a member named stifilz that can unlock your device via USB cable, his service is free but a donation is always a nice gesture. Good luck!

Hi can anyone help? I bought an At&t S7 Edge on amazon and got the unlock code from the vendor and it apparently worked. My only issue is that it'll only work with the sim that was in the phone when I entered the code. If I use another one the phone keeps displaying "insert sim". Thanks already for your replies
Thanks for the reply and there's 1 more things I need to mention: I'm using the phone overseas (Haiti) as it's still under At&t contract. Now to answer your questions no it doesn't ask for the unlock code anymore but like I said it only works with the non At&t
sim I used when entering the unlock code.

s7 (sm-930f) lock to Austrian A1 was not able to be unlocked by unlockbase.com. However, the nck from cellunlocker.net worked well.
Ok so what im mentioning is something im still not getting quite well, but i saw before many samsung phones S6, S7, Note... etc that have the international firmware 9XXF/FD even when the phone is actually a T-Mobile version or AT&T, in download mode you will be shown the real phone model but the firmware isn't. Of course through Odin with a PC you won't be able to flash the phone with a firmware besides the one designed for it. If you actually wanna flash the phone you'll need the original firmware, i tried it before and flashed a Verizon S6 that had the international 6.0 firmware on it through Odin and as you might guess i got an error as the device didn't match the firmware, when i actually flashed it with the correct Verizon 7.0 firmware it worked and the phone booted and worked alright, except that now the phone is network locked! downgrade isn't possible unless i use a repair firmware and a pit file (not sure if still works with nougat). Then i got the idea of actually using the repair firmware and the pit of the 9XXF version as its network free, and ended up breaking the phone completely. The jig didn't work so couldn't access odin. So i work for a friend of mine in a repair workshop PC, Consoles, Mobiles... blablabla and we have the Z3x box, it did unbrick the phone, and then i started playing with it to see what it can do, and there is an option to actually flash and mix different parts of the firmware, so i went an flashed the bootloader of the Verizon firmware with the rest from the international firmware, it didn't boot at first but somehow i got it into recovery mode and after a format it did boot, and the network was actually unlocked after.
I do not think this method would work on all versions, as some samsung phones uses the snapdragon soc while others uses the exynos soc, and i don't think you can mix those firmwares, but an unlocked exynos model might be unlockable with the international firmware, of course considering the risk of breaking the phone, but if you're lucky as i was and have one of those boxes you shouldn't be much afraid.
Something else i'd like to mention, is that the Z3x can actually fully backup the phone, and i don't mean a nandroid backup like TWRP but like a full partitions backup, and the idea i got but didn't test is if you have for example a locked S7 and an unlocked one and same model so let's say 930P, you can actually copy the raw partitions from the unlocked one to the locked one and i don't know, maybe ending up unlocking it too, again didn't test this one as i only have one S7 and its already unlocked (930FD).
(mod edit)
If the phone is IMEI blocked, which is likely is if reported lost or stolen, then you won't be able to use it on any network in that country afaik
you can't unlock your phone only by rooting and changing apn.
but you can try to contact the person who sold this phone and ask him to fix this issue, I think it may work

Good rule of thumb I have learned and used is to check google locks before seller leaves, And make them sign a bill of sale Printed name date and address, in most states in the U.S. most of these phones are valued over 500$ which With no profe You are technically in possession of stolen property which if valued over 500$ is a felony charge.
I have had a few close calls in the past but I do not now. It sucks cause you can get burned 2 ways.....

Unfortunately some people do do this. Its crooked Always get a bill of sale and check for google locks if seller is in hurry, Pass it on as much as you may want a certain device and your getting a deal.
I think people get these phones on contract for no other reason than to sell them, then they either report lost or stolen, or don't pay the contract and it gets IMEI blocked
That, or they are stolen phones

As a general rule, whenever you will buy another device from a person or third party, check the IMEI both http://imeipro.info/
At least this is one extra filter through which you make sure you buy a phone with a clean IMEI.

it's DSDS (dual sim dual standby), but you can activate some sort of imitation of "active" mode in settings. if sim1 is busy and someone calling on sim2 (which is offline because the phone has only one baseband) all income calls on sim2 will be redirected on sim1

Hey there, I want to sim unlock this Gs8 I got from Sprint, Model: Sm-G950U , Software version: G950USQS2BQL1, I received an unlock code but was not able to input the code because it just said sim error contact sprint immediately, Unlocking by sprint isn't a choice as they extorted money out of me, I really want my galaxy s8 to be in service again any Idea where to start? Any help will be much appreciated , I come from a background of good software knowledge so other approaches are good too.
Sprint extorted money out of you?
Extortion is illegal in this country...
Does your phone asks for codes or not?
If it doesn't ask for code you can try the following 3 methods, however, they are not 100% guarantee to work:
Method #1: Go to the dial screen on your phone as if you are going to make a call and press #7465625*638*# Once prompted for code, enter the 8 digit Unlock Code.
Method #2: Go to the dial screen on your phone as if you are going to make a call and press: #7465625*638*UNLOCKCODE#
Method #3: Go to the dial screen on your phone as if you are going to make a call and press: #0111*UNLOCKCODE#
If none of these work, also check if your phone's IMEI is clean and not reported or blacklisted by Sprint.
Sprint phones are usually unlocked one of two ways and neither has anything to do with a code. One is via Sprint with an OTA thing. The other is via root + a 3rd party tool like z3x, Octopus, or something similar.
Hi! I live in Ukraine and I am thinking about buying sprint S8 bad esn on Ebay. Will it work internationally (in Ukraine)? Do I have to unlock it to use internationally? I had many Verizon bad esn phones and all of them work perfectly.

Need to SIM unlock Sprint galaxy s8 (also fear it may be "black listed" unpaid lease)
I bought the phone from someone and thought it would work but I was trusting instead of smart.. Should've checked it out first. Anyways im negative a couple hundred $$ and I would love if some one would be able to help guide me through unlocking the SIM and if necessary rooting etc. To make it work for my Metro PCS account. In short I need to be able to I assume "SIM unlock" my S8 and hope it'll just be ready to pop my metro SIM into it and it works. Any advice? Will it work if I can just unlock it and use my metro SIM? Or since its an the lease hadnt been fully paid will that be a problem... Ive checked on a couple sites that let you see the IMEI number and if its black listed but it isn't... Please help.

Correct. It IS an advertisement - and not a very good one. He obviously has no knowledge of phones whatsoever if he thinks that Sprint devices use codes
I too have a Sprint phone which I wanted to unlock with the help of information here on the site. Since you won't be able to use unlock codes, and also bcause when I called Sprint they wouldn't help me -told me to contact the seller of the phone to have it unlocked, I was desperate for any unlocking method. Hard to find a working one and didn't want to waste too much time (old Galaxy S5 was already at it's last breath) I made contact with one of the unlockers here on XDA and one was able to unlock it remotely for me. I did pay $15 but with the crappy internet I have and since most unlocking sites are asking $39 for unlocking S8 then I really didn't mind this $15. Took well over a few hours to do since I had to download combination file for my phone which took a while. It's unlocked now thanx to vosi7en here at xda. I do have 1 problem now and that's tethering.....I don't have the option to do any hotspots. Anyone have an idea? I can't root yet cuz I'm on latest Oreo now.

I'm not sure what a "tmobile for vzw sim" is. But you might need to remove the Sprint bloatware in order for it to work properly
