[SOLVED] Storage Space Running Out - 8GB Free - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just rooted my phone, restarted made sure it was working (not the first time I've rooted), then I installed a few zips, restarted my phone a couple times and it was all working fine. I then made a nandroid backup with TWRP, and restarted my phone and it's suddenly running really slow, and I have the constant message saying "Storage Space running out" even though I have over 8GB free. I even just restored my phone to this backup, but as I expected, same error. Any ideas?:crying:

Did you wipe /cache in TWRP?

Yup, had no effect at all.. I resorted to flashing the factory image and re-rooting and installing zips. Still interested in a fix for this though, on the small chance it happens again[emoji16]

The next step I was going to suggest was to flash /system again. Some people posted wiping /cache was enough for them, but others had to reflash /system.

Ah that makes sense now that I think about it.. I flashed the entire image (boot, recovery etc.) but should have just done system, would have been quicker. Easy solution right there

Yep, glad it worked.
Could you please just add "[SOLVED]" to the thread title? Thanks

What Did I Do Wrong?

Ok so I have Vahalla Final flashed through Odin as my first ROM on this phone. Everything has been great for a few days and I flashed the lighting tweak today with no issues. Just a little while ago I made a backup and flashed the Linda voices and the Ki3 modem bc I saw where the KJ6 didn't allow long text messages. When I flashed the modem some blue words popped up really zoomed in on another screen then it was done. The phone was laggy so i tried to delete everything and restore like I had done numerous times on old phone.
I did a factory reset then cache then tried to format system. These are all steps i used to successfully take on other phone. It won't let me format the system though. Says: "format_volume failed to mount "/system" error formatting system!"
Where did I go wrong? Am I supposed to do some more wacky things on this phone for a restore? Everything else on it seems to take 20 more steps

CWM versions prior to those in bhndven's Slightly Modified Stock kernels have a problem with mounting/unmouting the /system partition in GB. I believe you can backup and restore user data, but nothing on the /system partition.
Flashing the KI3 modem shouldn't have had an effect like you're describing, though. I can't say I've had an issue like that at all or heard of people having that issue after flashing the modem.

So everything should run fine after trying the actual restore of my backup even though i couldn't format the system? I have a backup but don't want to restore over data that wasn't deleted or whatever. If that's possible.
How the hell do i know which modem to use anyways? There's like 10 to choose from
Uh yeah I forget it tries to format system anyways when restoring... and it couldn't. So what do i do? Re-flash the GB starter pack way through Odin?

As for the modem, I'm using KI3 on mine. You already did a factory reset so you should be able to just re-flash Valhalla.
Trying now. Does Vahalla automatically change all the mounts that the other roms require changing before flashing?

I'm not sure about that one. Definitely go check the original Valhalla post to make sure you don't have to set the mounts.
Guess you don't have too. I'm using it now. thanks for the help

No worries. Good luck
Hey I still have an issue. I reflashed Vahalla through CWM and it was fine at first all the way through setting everything up like it was before. Ran smooth. I went to the market this morning and checked for updates and Google Search, Maps and Superuser updated. Phone started acting really laggy again. Scrolls really slow, pulls up GO Launcher menu slowly, etc.
It seems to me that the re flash installed over the existing data that was left on the phone since i couldn't format my system.
My new question is, what's the best way to re do everything including formatting the system if I can't format through CWM? If I flash through Odin does that format everything? Or am I better of just going through the whole GB Starter Pack process again?? Or will that even work now since i've already done it?

Restored w titanium..... ugh.. Flashing a new zip doesn't wipe anything right? Just installs over whats already there right?

If you flashed and "it was fine at first all the way through setting everything up"...
try reflashing as you did before. Do fresh installs on as much as you can ONE AT A TIME. And then restore ONE AT A TIME what you can't do fresh installs on. It sounds like one of your backups is not agreeing with the system. Install/Restore ONE AT A TIME and play with phone between each to see if you can determine which backup your system is not agreeing with.
Did that make sense??
EDIT: And make sure to wipe dalvik cache and cache partition before you reflash as is always recommended.

Yeah it makes sense thanks. I will do this despite how impatient I am (see where that got me). I'm just got spoiled on another phone that was way way easier to work with. Weren't as many options to screw up either.
Any suggestions on how I can get my system to format for future reference?
I feel like it's Go Launcher for some reason. In cased you missed it though, I didn't start having lag issues until I flashed the Ki3 modem and linda voices one after another. I have a good backup but I can't format system to restore it.

I have never formatted my system nor read anybody wanting/needing to format their system. A factory reset is what people use to clean the gremlins along with wiping dalvik cache and cache partition. Bhundven has recommended flashing the same rom twice in a row I believe to help make sure all installs correctly (I think he was talking about bootloaders when he recommended that).
But a factory reset is what I think you are trying to accomplish with formatting your system.

I use GoLauncher on Vahalla Black with no problems. I think it has to do with your backup... not the app itself.
I wiped caches, did factory reset, tired to format system again with no luck and accidentally restarted before re-flashing Vahalla. Which, I guess I didn't really need to do anyways if it's an App causing the issue. I guess the factory reset would be enough. Smooth again so i will try some fresh reinstalls now. Thanks for the noob patience

Ok cool. In another phones forum a system wipe is actually suggested a lot. I think... I did it every time on the G2x before installing any new roms or backups. I wasn't doing it at first but started after someone suggested it. But yeah I think the factoy reset is enough. Seems to be enough so far.

[Q] Wiping Data wont wipe data.

So I am going to type out my story so that nothing is missed. I really wanna fix my phone.
*I started out a regular user. Saw TWEAKED 3.0BETA and give it a try. When the final release came out I put it on no problem.
*YESTERDAY My phone tried to update facebook, got an error like "wrong file size" or something stupid, it crashed and I could care less.
*THIS MORNING I wake up and I had a text message from my GF with a picture attached, I couldn't see the picture like normal and downloading it downloaded a blank file!
*SO, I decided to BOOT into CWM and erase everything. Wipe Data. Wipe Cache. Wipe Delvik. Then proceeded to put in Tweaked 3.1 which came out not to long ago.
*After doing so, the phone would boot into where it normally would, but then the "first start wizard" would crash and force close, along with every other process on the phone looping their crashes over and over etc.
*SO, this time I tried using ODIN to flash back to 4D. Set it up just like IMNUTS post said to, including the PIT file, did it, and booted up. SAME THING. Every process would crash including the new user wizard.
After letting it crash loop for while it finally got silent enough for me to skip the wizard and see whats on the phone. ALL MY OLD APPS ARE STILL THERE. Pandora, and all my other apps, still installed, and apparently, CRASHING upon its boot use or whatever.
What do I need to do. Ive tried to ODIN flash every stock version of the charge rom and my apps are still there. Still kicking.
Worst part is months ago my mother (who I share the family plan with) had to cancel the warranty because we are all low on cash, and even worse I lost my job 2 weeks ago so I can't get a new phone.
HELP!!!! Thanks in advance!

have you tried mounting /data & /system before you did a full format?
also you should try to re-partition when you ODIN back... that FORCES
a partition format and then re-installs the OS

mounting /data & /system would change it to say "unmount?"
but as far as odin goes, I checked the box that said re-partition. I followed IMNUTS post down to the letter, all my apps are still there.

yes, make sure it says "unmount" after you choose those options...
CWM for the charge sometimes has troubles and need a little help
get going. did you have a *.pit when you selected re-partition? it
wont do anything unless you have a *.pit file...
I know it's not good to hotlink so I will give you the page link as well
as the link itself (as there are TONS of choices)

yes. I know on the EVO you needed to format a couple of times to make sure that CWM actually formatted correctly.
So you might wanna try that. also did you try going to
Privacy -> Factory data restore option?
mind you I think you do need the stock recovery option to do that but I know that works well.
Just ODIN a stock recovery.. it shouldn't touch any custom items you might have.

I can't get into the phone, it wont get past the setup wizard. all the applications force close over and over and over again. i did however use the factory recovery mode to wipe and that did nothing either....
I just set it to "unmount" on both the data and system and now im wiping. I remember when I first started with this after wiping once with CWM the next few times wouldn't take long at all because there was nothing to wipe....
so i did as you said with the data and system, wiped it, and nothing, damn crap still there.
it literally wont erase it

this purges everything in the phone. (Non-recursively deletes)

Flash that in CWM (I assume it's a CWM zip? Didn't bother to check) and flash Tweaked 3.1 full CWM afterwards. Have both on the card ready to go.
Edit: oops I meant 3.2 not 1
Edit 2: nope, definitely meant 1. What am I doing this morning?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
have that CWM zip and another installation ready to go on the root of the SDCard.
flash the wiper and then install the OS
doesn't matter what ROM you have...

haven't tried yet. i was given samsung pst so im trying that atm. afterwards as a last resort ill use what you mentioned.
okay, so i did it. put on cwm, both tweaked 3.1 rom and that wipe all file on the sd card. booted it up. ran the wipe file. then ran tweaked. booted up, and it stuck at the samsung logo. then i figured it was wiped, so i went and hooked it up for odin and put EP4D on it again so i can get fresh, and as soon as i got in all my apps were there, and everything was crashing one process after another.
i think the phone is borked and non recoverable.
Did you happen to mount the /system and /data first as previously mentioned?
That should have forcefully removed everything. Also on a normal basis (if not using a PIT) it won't erase /data ... it never has for me anyways.
How much time does it give you when you get the FC's until it happens again (the FC) can you try
To manually uninstall? ( Applications -> Manage Applications and then deleting then one by one? Or take titanium backup and run a batch to delete the applications in one go....
I'm sorry, I'm just trying to figure this out and help you the best way possible.

[Q] Resetting device encryption

Hello, I am in a bit of a jam and am trying to find the best way out.
My device is encrypted using the native Android feature. I have Lean Kernel and CleanROM on the device. So it is rooted/unlocked. I was trying to clean the device further by uninstalling some useless apps with Titanium Backup. Turns out I messed up on something..
When the phone boots to the encrypted device screen, the keyboard doesn't show up! I am not able to get into the phone to do anything!
I have the latest CWM recovery installed. I tried a factory reset and such, but it says it fails to mount the internal SD card. /:
Anyone know how I can fix this and flash a new CleanROM? Data wiping is not a problem for me, but CWM refuses to mount the SD card to do it..
Any advice? I am relatively new to the Android scene, so try not to make things too complicated.
Odin?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
I am downloading the very first package. Since that seems to wipe everything, which is what I want at this point.
Will flashing that work?
I'm not sure if it will work, as I don't encrypt my device. What it will do is wipe your system, data, etc. partitions, but it won't touch your internal SD. This will probably be fine; it will install a keyboard and you should be able to enter your password, that is, if it can flash the ROM properly.

I'm still trying to understand how Android storage works, so I may sound like a noob here haha..
All I have is an internal SD card. I don't have an external one or anything. Are system, data located on another internal flash chip or something? If they are on the internal SD, I would imagine everything would be formatted and reset once this is flashed.
Sorry, I read the linked post wrong...So this will wipe everything, system, data, and internal SD.
As for the difference, the system and data are different partitions than the internal SD.. so normally when you factory reset in CWM, it just wipes the data, not your internal SD or system. What this means is that it won't touch some files, like ones you download from the internet, but it will get rid of all of your apps and appdata, as you know, and these are stored in the data partition.
I got it sorted. Thanks for the help.
Glad I could help!

Just wanna say this thread was a lifesaver, and I'll just leave my experience here for fellow noobs, like myself, stumbling into this issue.
I CMod'd my S3 with Clockwork (following very detailed instructions) and tried out encryption (knowing ahead of time that a factory reset would be in order if I didn't like it). As you all know Clockwork has trouble mounting the encrypted /sdcard/ directory, and won't do the factory reset. I was afraid that since Clockwork couldn't deal with the encrypted data, so too might Odin, leading to the risk of bricking. This thread gave me enough courage to give it a go. Following the above linked instructions solved the problem. Odin had no problem wiping and writing over the encrypted data. after I was back to stock I ran through installing Clockwork and CMod again. And just like that, the problem's fixed.
Thanks a bunch everyone!
EDIT:
I just got a response on twitter from a friend who ran into the same issue with clockwork. According to him, apparently TWRP doesn't have this flaw. My phone's working now and I don't want to monkey around with it anymore, but maybe a more experienced user out there could comment on/confirm this, and maybe add the info to the tutorials (if it's correct).
Thanks again!

Yeah, I was worried I might have created a $200 paper-weight!
I'm glad that my question ended up helping you as well!:good:

[Resolved] [Q]AOKP boot loops after premature battery pull

I've had AOKP (can't remember which version..) installed for a while now and it's been acting funny, boot looping from time to time, but a simple battery pull fixed it each time.
Today I was turning off the phone to switch out the battery, and pulled out the battery before it had finished shutting down the "proper" way. Now when I turn it on, it gets stuck at "Initiating Swagger" with the pink unicorn. I've tried wiping the dalvik cache and formatting /cache.
I'd like to preserve some of the photos and texts, as well as all my apps which I, completely stupidly, didn't back up with Titanium Backup even though I've been meaning to for a little while now. I'm ready to reset and install a new rom if I have to, but I was wondering if there was a simple fix I'm overlooking since all I did was pull the battery out too early, rather than having done anything substantial like installing a new rom. Really appreciate any help, I've been phoneless all day and would love to not go through the motions of a whole new rom.

Looks like pulling the battery while it was shutting down corrupted some essential scripts on your device. So you have to flash a Rom to fix this. Dont worry coz there is something i do which can help you if you want to keep your apps n all. What you have to do is take a clockwork mod recovery backup right now. Then wipe everything including data, cache and dalvik cache. Now flash your Rom. If you want your apps n all then flash the same Rom you had. Now after it is flashed and working, boot to cwm recovery. select backup and restore then go for advanced restore. Select the backup you took. And restore data alone. This should make your phone look like it had never been flashed again with the Rom. Just like you had it before. And if even now the bootloop continues, do the same but first flash the kernel then Rom then do what i asked you to do. Hopes this helps...
Thanks man, that's a great idea, I didn't even think of that. Unfortunately I tried it, without and then with the kernel and it still didn't work.
What I ended up doing (for any of our posterior who happen upon this post) is installed the newest version of AOKP (which I actually didn't have previously), and downloaded an app called nandroid manager, which pulls apps/data, SMS messages, call logs, everything from any nandroid backup. I'm restoring all my stuff right now. Thank god.
Interestingly enough, even after I wiped everything multiple times, when I connected my phone to the computer it had all my photos & other data still on the internal storage. Weird as hell. But whatever.

That's because a wipe does not affect sd card or internal storage

Well.. It do affect internal memory on low phones. I am not sure bout devices having large internal storage but wiping data usually removes everything on my internal.

[HUGE BUG] Partitions disappeared!

Hello everyone. Wanted to share an experience with my OPO,.
Today i rebooted the phone, and when it booted up it presented me the first configuration wizard. I thought, "ok this is strange" but after i completed again the configuration everything was still there.
Tonight I tried to install the XNPH33R update via TWRP, i loaded the file into the sdcard and rebooted into TWRP.
I thought "let's make a nandroid before, in case of problems", and i saw it could not mount the /system partition. The backup failed and then i tried to reboot. The phone does now not start and when i try to boot into TWRP, it reports that now ALL the partitions are borked and can't be mounted, reporting them 0MB, except for the boot one.
My question is, am i the only one that experienced something similar?!
I'm goin on to flash factory image but this seems a big problem!
Little hint: try to install another recovery (e.g. CWM, Philz...) before returning to stock
I doubt OnePlus (or any other mfg) would count this sort of thing a bug if your phone is running anything other than 100% stock.

Obviously i don't want to report a "bug" that i want oneplus to fix
I just wanted to know what happened, my partitions corrupted themselves by... rebooting?
since i saw that many users reported being stuck at the oneplus logo after updating to XNPH33R i wanted to know if this is related to their experience :silly:

Sorry wrong thread
Sent from E.P.D.Center
I had the same weird problem last night.....
Except my recovery was also reverted to stock.
it happened after i got notifed about an update available couple days in a row which i canceled.
I even have Droidwall and everything but a few apps are blocked from data usage.
What i would suggest is to freeze the ""system update" system app.
I kinda have a feeling the OTA updates have something to do with it.
This happend to me 1 other time a while back with an HTC One X device. Same pattern, System update notifications then couple days of ignoring .... then pooffff...
