Previous galaxy devices have had an IR blaster but it does not have the ability to learn commands. The Lg G flex 2 has the ability to learn commands.
I was sondering if samsung stepped up their game.
Can someone confirm or deny whether the phone has this ability?

Coming from someone that has had a HTC One M7 and LG G3, the IR Blaster is just simple hardware. The ability to learn or the applications it could utilize was based on the software. An app called Smart Remote was able to learn some IR commands when I put it to the test.
I doubt so... I don't even think there's IR support out of the box (you need to download the Peel app for that).

Wrong. The ability to learn commands is not software related, it depends entirely on the IR blaster in the phone (hence the hardware). If the blaster doesn't support learning, no software update or app can change that.

Smart remote can learn. My S5 learned. So yes, it can learn commands.
I think perhaps I did not clarify the question properly
. currently I have the LG G flex 2.
If i point a remote at the phone and press a button.
then the phone can learn the function of that button
does from a separate remote control.
this is especially useful because my car stereo is a piece of ****
It is very limited funtionality without the remote. Which i did not ever have.
My friend has same stereo ironically enough.
I used his remote to teach my phone the essential functions.
the samsung galaxy s5 I had was unable to learn due to hardware limitations
can anyone confirm that the galaxy s6 can learn from other remotes
I've come from the M7 so understand fully what you're asking and can confirm the S6 does not support IR learning.
Indeed it does not learn. I have smart remote and have ACTUALLY tried it. On the up side, the S6 has the best ir blaster I have ever used. You can turn your back to your tv and it still works. I dont have experience with HTCs but my S4, Note 8, and LG G2 all had really weak ir blasters that required dead on aim.
On a side note Smart Remote works with pronto codes so its easy to find ir commands on the web if by some odd chance you have a device that the app doesnt have the codes built in for.
Hi there. Haven't been able to get the IR Blaster functional on my handset at all. There was no app installed on my S6 & all of the Peel Smart Remote apps on google play say they are incompatible so I'm at a loss as to how to try it out. Would you have a link to the app you installed? Many thanks!

How in the world did you get the smart remote app to work with pronto codes? I'm at my wits end trying to figure it out.
No it does not
I have the s6 with smart remote and my s5 had the ability to learn very disappointed because my s6 is amazing but the ir does not have the ability to learn

I'm searching to buy online this awesome tab because it is not available here in Europe yet.
In the specifications when it was announced the infrared port was described and shown on the pictures on the right side of the tablet.
Today I cannot see anymore this specification and I've read that it would be present only on the European version.
Is it correct? Anybody knows more bout this question?
Thanks!

My question is totally legitimate from all the pictures that still are present all over the web showing the back right side with a little dark spot.

For some reason Samsung removed this port. It could have something to do
with performance issues or cost, your guess is as good as mine.

The unit shown in the video above is a pre-production unit. Notice how the box and packaging is not the retail packaging? Also, the accessories included are totally different. The retail version does not include a Bluetooth earpiece, and the included earphones are white, not black.
Also, the specs listed on GSM Arena are not up-to-date, and are based on pre-production specifications.
Again, the retail production version of the 7.7 does NOT include IR. Also, even if you somehow managed to get your hands on one with IR, chances are that it will not get any software updates, and you'll be left with orphaned hardware. Even if the official firmware updates are compatible with the IR 7.7, chances are that the IR functionality will be disabled anyway, so yeah...
Honestly, I find the IR to be kinda pointless anyway. There are a lot of other ways to get your tablet to do exactly the same things as having IR on it.
Mine is from Thailand and doesn't have an IR port. Silly thing is, at the mobile expo the ones on display had IR, but the ones you buy don't..Bit annoying what Samsung do with all the different versions.

It is probably as you say: they removed this connection in the production phase and was present only in the prototype.
Am I the only one that thinks that the IR is just a useless addon?
Are you that lazy to pickup the real remote controller and instead spend hours to setup your tab to control your home entertainment devices with your tab?
If you have so many devices why not buy a Logitech remote? But just whine here missing the IR port...
And IR to transfer data is also crap..

I'm fully agree with you, but not doing like the iphone owners who say that the bluetooth transfer is old and useless!
Certainly I'm not crying for lack of irda port.....
I purchased mine from Dubai a couple of weeks ago. Only model available was 3g 16Gb, no IR.
There was a commercial Samsung booth in the mall displaying a 7.7 with IR.
The lady told me this specific model was not available for sale and did not know if this model would ever been sold.
Tried a trade but no go...

Agreed, but my LCD TV and sound system are Samsung.
Integration would be a nice gadget, although IR sounds a tad out of time.

Right! I use often the Galaxy Remote App on my Tab7 and Note but with the wifi connection under Network. It is very usefull for the internet navigation on my Samsung LCD TV!
The irda would be only a more feature...... never mind!
Yes, wifi on both TV and sound system makes this IR thing kind of useless.
It could be useful if you wanted to transfer a picture or something to another user's unit and if they only both have wifi version, not currently near wifi hotspot, and therefore cannot e-mail.

if both users have a decent samsung device they can use Kies. If they're not use, bleutooth...
As we have passed the 2000 era more than 10 years, bluetooth is pretty the standard in all devices as like a color screen.
Bluetooth, no need to aim your device to each other, faster data transfer and more stable.
But being faster it still takes "time" to beam over a high resolution picture.
If the target device only has irda (and probably a COM port) maybe it's time to dump that outdated piece of technology.
The more tech bits, the more to play around with, so I would of quite liked to of had the IR. Not for file transfer though lol. Don't think it was intended for that purpose this time around. Just for remote features.

Never mind Bluetooth, if both devices are Samsung, have you ever tried WiFi Direct? Holy $H!7!! I've used it between my GS2 and my Note, and it's ridiculously fast!
Besides, the IR blaster (assuming it's the same as on the 7 Plus) isn't capable of data transfer anyway; it's just a 1-way transmitter like on any remote control.
my opinion, to control TV, home theater, hi fi, home automation system, directly from the tablet without having to use other remotes would be a good thing.

You can already do this, and without IR as well. Have a look here.
i wouldnt mind using it but since i can only turn on my tv, its basically useless. it doesnt work with my centurylink prism box. there is an update in the market but cant update it.
anyone here using peel to its fullest?
I have set it up with no problem (HDTV, Satellite DVR and Stereo Reciever) but didn't find any real use for it. Its just so much easier to use the universal remote that came with my dish. Also while it turns everything on with one click it doesn't turn everything off, have to do them all seperately.
Peel is just horrid, completely lacks a learn function or a means of importing definitions. A decent ir app that used the transmitter built into the 7+would be great. Possibly a LIRC based app - that would open many doors.
Sent from my GT-P6210 using Tapatalk
haven't use it at all... useless for me...
I use to use the Peel app before I got my 32" HDTV.
The only reason I don't use it now is because I would hate having to keep pressing input til it gets all the way down to hdmi 1.
Basically, it needs to be upgraded for the newer tvs.
Never used it...their support tells me that there is a bug with honeycomb and ir sensors. They said that the fix is ics and its up to Samsung to release it. Kind of a crumbly response if you're going to bundle a product and not support it.
Sent from my GT-P6210 using xda premium
I used it with a Samsung tv and lg tv no problems,
It also works with a old Sony DVD player I have,
Can't get it to work with the dreambox but this could be due to the custom firmware on the box,
Future support for sky boxes would be great...
Nope. Haven't touched it and no plans to do so.
I tried it out when I first got by SGT7+ and it worked - sort of - with my Toshiba TV and DirecTV. I haven't used it since. Actually I find it more trouble than it's worth. The IR sensor was not one of the reasons I got my Tab and didn't even come into play with my decision-making process. I could live without it quite nicely.
Never.
I think it is totally useless. Even I have couple of devices, but never use. I still can't understand why Samsung spent money to put this.
I also tried setting it up but couldn't get it to work with my setup. I am using Windows Media Center on an HTPC and all I could get it to do was turn on the TV. I like the idea behind it, but making it compatible with so many different setups is difficult. It would be interesting if Logitech bought them and integrated it with their Harmony line.

No I am from India and even the Tata Sky STB does not work it is from pace and I did get a reply from Peel CC and it was that the software is only available in US currently and will launch ii in other countries shortly
The peel software seems like a nice attempt to bring a remote control to our device, but it lacks on support and devices. Not even satellite receivers are supported.
I wish Logitech would come with an Harmony-like app.
Works just fine with my sony 47" lcd, my at&t uverse dvr, and an old sanyo tube tv... the ui is kinda funky, but it works... controls the volume, channels, etc just fine...

Really? I was under the impression that they had finally started to do some work on the Canadian boxes. Their help forum seems next to dead. And a Logitech app would be great! But honestly I'll settle for a lirc port that has all the buttons for my remote. The guide's a nice feature but it's like basic functionality.
Works on my Panasonic TV (at least On/Off and Source changing)
the Denon Audio On/Off works but nothing else
and Humax isn't supportet at all!
Peel is rubbish here in the UK, it controls my Samsung D8000 by changing channel and volume and thats it. We get no tv guide and other features..
Peel works great with my gear. Dish hopper, Mitsubishi dip tv, pioneer avr. Everything works as it should.
Well it works great with my LCDs both Samsung and LG but does not detect my STB even though the manufacturer is listed I think it can be fixed by an expert as its all of about the frequencies which need to be correct anyway I think thats one sore point about the tab that all other apps are great except this one may be this was intended mainly for the US markets.
Experts is there any other app which can be used
App works great for me on samsung lcd, denon reciever, and direct tv. Stupid problem/question though. My direct tv remote works fine, but i can't find channel buttons. I can manually input the number and change channel, but just no up/down buttons, or any i can find. Im new to this thing, so I could just be missing it. Thanks.

Oh hello there! Very good post. I however do not have a Galaxy Note. I also do not have Google tv. I have a note 10.1. So using the included peel app is a "fun" option. My logitech harmony 900 is about 100x better though.
But please keep up the outstanding posts.
It's not that I bought my note for the remote functionality. But if I bring it with me when I watch tv I would like to take advantage of all it has to offer.

I also have a galaxy note 10.1! I still don't see why the heck anyone would use this device as a media remote. I am glad you liked my post, it's good to see that sarcasm is alive and well in the retirement home.
OK so your sitting on the couch surfing drawing on your note.
You wanna change channel on the TV.do you sit down the note find the tv remote.change channel put remote back(most likely under couch cushions where they hide).or click 3 times.
Home key peel remote icon. Then your favorite channel thats showing in your screen..OK then back to where you were doing.
The remote is kewl if you already have it in your hand. If your not on the tab standard remote works well.
One more thing finding something new to watch is great with peel if you have it set up right with your cable provider. It shows what's on and when as well as rather its a rerun right in your face quickly and easly. Put some effort into setting it up right you then might find use for it
Imagine this scenario you have TV, home theatre, Blu ray player, STB and what would be more convinient using one tab to do ur work and also the work of 4 different remotes or use four different remotes, the whole idea is not to replace the remote but to given an option its a value addition and considering that its a good addition the whole concept of the not is it can do almost all you daily task in one device

As long as you are in the US... Anywhere else you have a REALLY limited remote control. I can't even get the guide up to see whats on. I have to scroll through each channel. Painful considering this was a big part of the advertising and it doesn't do what was advertised outside the USA...
Brings to mind the Apple Ipad 3 being advertised here in Oz as 4g capable. That's only true in certain countries... Apple got a smack over that and had to pull the false adverts...

I have google tv also- works great. i has issues with the peel app w/o GTV. The remote app with the best options for G TV is Able remote. the Gtv remote app is very limited. I know this is not on topic....sorry.
Also i do agree with Renee that if i am playing on my note 10.1 and want to change the channel i just hit switcher-dont bother grabbing the remote-- b/c mym GTV app is always open if i have the note in my hand--, than change the channel. Also can just hit microphone and voice search for anything - or simply say play led zep and bam google music opens on the TV and plays led zep....
Hello, I have the p5113 model of the Samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 with a built in IR blaster, but I decided to root it with CM10.1, now the only nightly builds were for just p5110 (which does not have the ir blaster hardware), which the OP had said worked for both models.
So after flashing CM10.1 the model number of the tablet changed to p5110.I tried to download the Peel smart remote app, but when I turn it on, Peel does not recognize my device having an ir blaster because I flashed the latest p5110 ROM.
Is there a work around for this?

This has been answered a dozen times in threads already. No, there is no support in CM or CM based ROMs for the IR blaster. No one has addressed writing the proper libs or framework for that device.
Try using TouchSquid. I hear that works on CyanogenMod 10.1. Let us know if it works for sure or not though. I'm thinking of trying one of the nightly versions and I'd like to use it too.
I doubt that touchsquid works... the problem is driver related, not app related

Does Touchsquid really work on a CM based ROM? I seriously doubt it as the poster above you said its an issue concerning the driver. This is getting quite annoying though. Want a good tablet experience? Then you root and flash but lose the IR blaster. Want the IR blaster to work and you have to deal with a garbage tablet experience. Seems to me that the IR blaster is one of the top features these tablets have besides the SD card slot. Personally I wouldnt waste my time developing Roms for a tablet like this without supporting the IR blaster. It would be like developing a Rom for the Nexus 7 without taking advantage of the increased screen resolution. I dunno maybe that makes sense and maybe it doesnt. Bottom line is if you purchased this tab without seeing the value in the IR blaster working then you wasted your money. There are much better Tabs available for the price or a few dollars more. If you did purchased this tab then I can only assume this is a feature that you wanted to put to use.
So what did you do? Keep the stock software? Did you try the Enhanced Stock ROM in the Rom section? Can you get a stock Android look with a Tablet UI ? Im digging into these questions myself as we speak but Im also considering buying a different tablet. I cant believe im about to go through this process again so soon. DAMNIT SAMSUNG!
I dont wish to offend any of the developers or users if you feel ive said anything wrong. I blame Samsung for not allowing their device to be all it should be and Google for not allowing their software to be all it can be. I shouldnt ever be sitting on hardware I cant get a freaking driver for regardless of the version of Android im running.
I've not had an ir blaster on a phone in over 10 years.
I assume it's so you can use the phone as a remote control, and if so, how?
The instruction that came with the phone are very basic and the ir blaster is not mentioned.
Thanks,

Foolishly I looked up LG remote, because that's my tv brand. I will get the Xiaomi remote and give it a go, many thanks.
It's a good idea and it could be useful, but the implementation is terrible. The remote database gets even Apple TV 4 wrong, so it doesn't work. Overall, it's unusable, for me.
