As of Jan 3,2011...
If anyone can give information / review about how different apps save downloaded art, it would be very helpful. It seems that art can be embedded in ID3 tags, or it can have put in a folder. But different programs save in different folders or into an "album art" file...which may not be compatible with different programs. Also, how does iTunes, Winamp, and Windows Media handle this? (Ive used each for my music collection, and so may have different types of cover art formats in my collection)
12/28/2010 I didn't mean to start making this into a bigger post. But let me first say what I'm looking at/for:
Features I'm paying attention to:
headset control
Lock Screen and homepage widget
General UI ( and in particular, ease of getting from a "playlist" back to the "Now playing" quickly
Features which are sort of cool to me:
lyric display
Folder / File Organization
Album art (it would help me if someone could tell me about the different types and options here. ID3 mode? Files?
(and a distant fourth in importance) Video player
Equalizer (I don
't care about this but everyone else seems to be)
Features are just can't get myself to care about:
Scrobbing (whatever the hell that is)
Social stuff
Any damn fraking thing that statistically analyzes my preference in order to help me decide what I like. I don't want to robotize my music.
So this is what I have looked at so far:
Samsung Default:
Great Status bar and lock screen controls. headset controls. Has equalizer. NO Folder Select (it scans all music on the phone and so will get unintended stuff into the library). Nothing special other than this, but it a good app. HOWEVER, I'm now using Darky's ROM which does not have the Samsung Lock Screen. The Samsung player's lockscreen widget is tied to the Samsung lockscreen. Also does not have homescreen widget, but this is more than made up for by the very good notification bar integration.
Meridian:
Plays video and music. Headset controls but no lock screen. Good gesture control. Edit ID Tags
Cubed:
Video and Music. NIce Lockscreen widget. Headset controls. Art download in ID3 mode. However I still don't terribly like the interface, but it works. Has a directory filter , so can play just a folder and keep out unwanted songs (like game songs). Downloads art in ID3...method. Don't know if that's good or bad. There really is no "Now Playing" screen. It just shows it super-imposed on the song library. Which is not pretty but its actually functional. For me, Cubed is a good free app.
MixZing:
Plays music and video. Options up the yingyang, including lots of social crap. I'm not going to detail here because lockscreen version is a paid app, and I'm focusing on not paying (it does have trial period though). Good UI. Can do folder view, and has good folder management options. Can switch between folder list and now playing very quickly. Has headset controls. Has Equalizer. Auto-download album art. The free version is staying on my phone because it plays video. Lots of damn social crap.
Winamp:
Just plays Music. Interface easy, but maybe a little dull (maybe there are skinning options?). Has headset controls and lockscreen. Ability to look up info and search on the artist. Ability to syn with Winamp desktop, so a good choice if you use that. Some social crap. No Equalizer
DoubleTwist:
Looks a little like Winamp, but also plays video. Has Lockscreen wideget and headset controls. With $5 purchase can sync with Itunes. No equalizer.
UI is mostly good, if not exciting. Does not do folder view(!). Not that many options. If I wanted to use one player for both music and video, and have the lockscreen widget and handset controls, this definitly works. It also has art download, but that's not so important to me. I also use iTunes Agent to file-sync anyway.
Miui:
Bare basic player. No equalizer. No lockscreen widget. No headset controls. What this does have is a) art download , and most exciting b) lyric read-along. I intend to use this app just for my KTV practice, so it will stay on my phone
(but I recently discovered Lyrics App, which allows me to see Lyrics of everything).
PowerAmp:
This has everything. But the free version is 15 day trialware, and I don't want to go through it all here. One thing I remember about this is that it allows fine customization of its widget appearence.
TinyPlayer:
As the name implies, a small player with minimum bells and wistles. My device is an SGS which generally has an OK time with demanding applications, so this is not for me. But for those who want a simple bare-minimum player, this works.
......
Others have mentioned apps which I need to pay for to try, such as Lithium Player... apps which have a social network focus (Tunewiki), and apps that I need to flash (CW Mod). I'm sorry I cannot add these to this list now.
12/27/2010
I'm in China and sometimes the market is problematic (although I could just fix that with a VPN). When I can download again, I intend to note the features of :
btunes
Astro Player
TuneWiki
Also, I will re-download all the above (I just wiped-flash Darky's awesome ROM for my SGS) and go back over the others and note down features I missed.
Here is a pic of the homescreen widgets.
Widgets (from top to bottom):
Meridian
Cubed
MixZing
Winamp
Doubletwist
I'll never understand why people say they don't understand "cubed" interface. What's confusing about it? It's the same thing as scrolling through albums with a little animation. The new update gives you control over the directory files, so it's not like it's different then any other player. Do people really get that shocked when they see something that looks different but operates the exact same?
Just scroll up or down, man. You'll see the albums or artist (depending on how you choose) in ABC order. You want to skip to a different letter, scroll side to side. That's literally the entire learning curve. Don't like the cube? Change the view mode to Morph Flow. Don't like looking at albums? Change the view mode to boring, it just gives you a list.
The only thing I can possibly imagine people being slow to realize is that to change the place of a song, you click on the dotted light thing at the bottom. To change from artist to album to song you drag the dotted bar in the bottom-middle to the right or left.
This all took me less then 2 minutes to figure out.
poweramp = iTunes . I'm off it. same **** different skin. Cubed can scan all the bands in your library and tell you A) when their upcoming release is and B) the next time their playing a show within 50 miles of you (you can adjust the distance). Now THAT'S practical application.
I appreciate you putting this list together. It is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
Hands down the best player is TINY PLAYER. It actually does REAL folder play like you're using windows explorer on your home computer.
Another great feature is the live font size option which lets me read long file names. Even Poweramp doesn't have that crucial feature. What good is it if I can't read what song it is. Especially true for Classical music with long file names.
PS - It is the ugliest ui ever tho lol. But I really don't care.
PS2 - Poweramp doesn't have everything. It lacks sleep timer and font size changing to read long file names. And no true folder play. Both of which are available in tiny player. and it is tiny at 64kb
I figured I would throw a few notes in the discussion about music players since music is a big part of my Android experience. I use two apps, one for playing music located on my phone, and another app for streaming from my home PC.
1) Mixing:
the main reason I bought this app was because of the lock screen abilities. Not only does it give you gesture commands from the lock screen, but it also has a setting that will make the lock screen come active for a few seconds each time a new song starts, showing the album art and song information. I like this a lot since it allows me to see what has just started playing, and mainly because it gives me a few seconds to skip the song if I do not like it ... instead of having to hit the power button first to activate the screen, like all the other music apps do ... it's one less step to distract you when driving. It is a small, nitch feature, but it is worth the money of the full version app for me. I have yet to find another music app that does this.
2) Audiogalaxy:
Hands down, this is the best app to use if you want to stream music from your home computer. This is great for people like me that have huge music libraries that will not fit on an SD card. All you have to do is download the app for your phone, install a small program on your PC, and sign up on their website. It is free, and it simply works with no hastles. I have tried many other apps that I could not get to work ... they all required me to **** around with ports and IP addresses, and I could not get any of them to work. Audiogalaxy was so easy my mom could do it. No screwing around with ports or IP's, just install, setup which folders you want to scan, and then wait for it to build your library. Great app!!
Hopefully Mixzing adds streaming ability into its code so I can just use one music app. Until then I will continue to use these two apps together. Together they make for an awesome music experience on the Android phone.
hi, nice list for reference.
just a quick note from me, i'm using miui and the lockscreen and heatset controls works on cm6 which has those tweaks modded on.

I guess I should say I like "folder view". Or just Song List. I have a lot of songs from independents, songs un-attributed in the tags, songs from Chinese artists, etc. So I don't want to go to an Album or Artist, but rather to a folder. I'm sorry...I did not know the correct terminology.
As for internet-related content, you may have seen I call that stuff "social crap". I have no idea what scrobbing is. The artists don't come to China. And even if I was in the US, I really could not care to share my music tastes with others... let everyone find their own muse.

Oh. Sounds cool. I don't want to have to flash something just to get that function though. But having lyrics is fun.

I'm just focusing on Apps that I can use outside. But thanks for those comments. Does AudioGalaxy allow non-streaming, regular functionality? FYI some of the other players above (I think Meridian) also have streaming, but I didn't review this because its not something I look for. I need to update for this feature I guess.
I will now download tinyplayer and add this to the review. I also hope to download (from somewhere) the stock Android player.
Right now probably Doubletwist will be my main player, only because its a music and video player that has lockscreen widget and headset controls. OR I will try to reinstall the Galaxy SGS player (which is uninstalled after flashing Darky's ROM). Funny thing is Doubletwist's main sell-point is iPhone integration, and I don't care enough about that to purchase it.
If I was going to spend money (which I may just do), then Mixing is the best of what I have reviewed so far. I don't know if its worth $5 for now.
I personally use 2 music players
1 standard CyanogenMod player
2 Lithium player
I normally do this because I will have music on lithium, and podcast download through methods other than my podcast player in t he CM music player.
since nobody mentioned lithium and it's a pay app I would mention a few things..
Pro: Looks great, UI is great and has nice things like volume built in, multi-colors/customizations and the #1 reason I bought it is it grabs album art for with a few clicks!
Cons: The ui for FF/RW skips to big of a segment in a 2 hour, or 2 hour podcast (not a big deal, it's a music player not a podcast player) and one semi-major issue for me is the program NEVER shows up in tasks (holding home), or previously used programs (etc). For some reason android doesn't recognize it as a program and the CM lockscreen music controls don't work for it.
To me the pro's outweigh the cons so I purchased it even if just for the album grabber.
I still really like bTunes.
I know it's abandonware, but it's only $1.49.
Looks like the iPod player (may be a good thing or a bad thing), it's very simple to use, it has a nice widget and even though it hasn't been updated in some time, it works great on froyo and never crashes on my phone. I don't think it has an equalizer.
TuneWiki is my fave, actually one of my fave Android apps.
Music Player Pro is still the best for me, I wish PowerAmp gets some of MPP features to use only one.
Thanks for the comments about the apps you tested
Tinyplayer for me on the Inc. Half the players can't find the built in memory. Most of the others can't restrict themselves to a folder so a bunch of sound files that aren't music and belong to games.

I'm looking at Mort Player now and it also does folder selection but has a lot more options, (headset control for one)
I'm still using the basic player ...
I've tried some of the more robust apps, but damn if they don't chew up a bunch of runtime memory, causing lag. I'd like an equalizer, but I don't want all the extra garbage that comes with an app, when I don't need it.
Have gone through various music players but Power Amp is the best it's worth paying for in the market.
Rockbox is absolutely the best choice. Equalizer, actual playlist support, themes, lockscreen controls, and plays every codec at the highest quality you throw at it. Just missing widgets, but it's a little buggy at the moment and it's still early in development.
i think u forgot TTPOD
A nice feature is if it is compatible with Last.FM scrobble apps
Nice summary atm i use Winamp becausr it has a esay ui and i love the shoutcast Radio Feature but maybe i switch to Double Twist because of the wifi sync i dont know yet...

I tend to agree, but I'm not sure how much money I want to spend on my phone. Part of me wants to get an iPhone and never have to fudge around with settings and roms again. Part of me hates the iPhone because I can't do with it what I want. So I'm trying not to invest more money in my phone unless I get something really really must-have. As the default player with the SGS is good (and now can use it with Darky's ROM), I'm good.

Winamp's UI is easy, but Double Twist is very similar UI IMO.
I have 473829 'albums' on my phone because i play 'albums' all the time
bought 2 'albums' this week
Just noticed that my android 2.2 can't play albums in order????????
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn't even acknowledge 'tracks' or 'track order' - so it just plays the track in alphabetical order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whats all that about?????
Some moron has sat down and spent maybe a month designing a media player - played an album in ALPHABETICAL ORDER and thought - great that it!
I cant beleive it
Last phone I had, that did this was LG i bought in 1980 sumink and even that was updated/corrected within few months
I'm gob smacked that you can buy a phone in 2012 that does not know how to play an album
I supose as well as the morons that designed it, most kids today dont know what an album is so wouldn't know any better
but it like watching a movie with all the scenes payed in alphabetical order instead of the proper order
I wondered why people pay £500 for iphone and starting to see why
Its a mistake only a total moron could make - prolly the same guy that decided to make sure you are wide awake to operate the 'snooze' function
I mean - the designer must have had 100000000's of opportunities to put it right and totally failed to even notice this blunder - which doesn't look good for the future but i have to ask
Can Android v4.0 play albums??? because android 2.2 cant
Music is a deal breaker for me so it might have to be iphone for me
I'm guessing you're using the stock Android music player(is that Google music)?
Well something the iPhone can't do is let you change the default music player, so just because the player it came with doesn't mean it can't be replaced.
Some of the popular music players are poweramp, playerpro, mixzing, doubletwist, cloudskipper, and Google play music
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
This has nothing to do with what Android version you're on and everything to do with what music player you choose to use. There's a ton of them out there, find one that has the features you want. I'm using a Sony built one called Walkman, it's the shiz.

And this part leads me to believe you are a total douchebag not willing to do a tiny bit of research before blasting an entire OS. So disregard what I said before, buy an iPhone, please. You'll fit in well.
Playlist Manager app to play albums
this will do it for you
visit the Google store ands search for Playlist Manager by THEOKLINK

Pan on Note 10.1
Please add to the bug list the pan problem on Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, detailed in https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mx-videoplayer/svXy0vhIUOQ
Hello, thanks for this great app.
I wanted to request something I think is a great feature, but then I was happy to see it already in the high priority list.
Popup Player: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/mx-videoplayer/ws_voRX-MVc/discussion
But then I looked at the original thread and it dates back 2 years. Is there any word on development of this?
I see so many video apps successfully implement this and it seems to work wonderfully well for playing local files as well as streaming. For stress testing I even tried out large video files and heavy streams while loading up heavy apps and games and I never noticed lag or stutter, on my first generation nexus 7.
MX Player has always been my favorite android player since my nexus one, 4 years ago until today. And I would love to keep supporting it but I'm now downloading other players when I need floating video.
So I hope for some good news on development of this great feature, thanks!

auto resume on startup
Hi
This player is awesome.
Here a feature needed for android car radio. Android car player are more and more popular, a nice feature would be an option when we start the player, the last played file start automatically on resume, like a normal car cd player do. (no need to start the application automatically, there is already an application for that).
Because each time the car is turned off, all applications are stopped by the android system. of course, if you use the integrated player it resume automatically, but it does not play all format and the interface is not good enough.
Thanks!
Cedric
@AlbertAS and @xenyz please make a new forum thread for your feature requests, then link that thread here, so that it can be added to the list. With a thread for your specific request, it is easier to keep track of each item.

This is a great video player indeed, but as a car stereo app it's not ideal I'd say.. cause that's not its main purpose.
In my car I've been using PowerAmp for over 4 years now, it works great with everything you need from auto resuming to lockscreen controls etc. PowerAmp was one of the first apps to integrate all these things and still does it best imo. Although many other players have adopted the same functions.

I agree that PowerAmp is probably one of the best music player apps out there.
Apologies in advance if I'm doing this wrong.

It doesn't appear in the Play Store for GTV, and I have tried sideloading MX player and it offers a "not supported" message.

(skip to second paragraph if you're not interested in a mild rant)
In one of the recent updates for the YouTube app while streaming to the Chromecast it'll automatically add every video you've watched to the TV queue. That's fine as I don't mind having a list of the recent videos I've watched, but the part that bothers me (enough to create a thread, which I can't remember the last time I started one) is that the video is added to the top of the queue. This makes every video that you just F***ING watched play all over again! Again, I'd be fine with this if there was any type of preferences within the YouTube app to disable such an asinine "feature" that I'm pretty sure was solely created to boost the number of views of their videos (as I see no other purpose). It really feels like Google is going the way of taking away many options within their apps and it's bugging the s**t outta me to no end. The Chrome browser within Android use to have a plethora of options such as choosing user agents and things of that sort but that option is no longer available either. [/rant]
Is there any way to disable the autoplay "feature" of the TV queue while using the Chromecast, or the TV queue altogether if needed? My current version of the YouTube app is 5.7.41 and I'm not sure when this bug was introduced exactly.
Let me know if there's more information needed, I've been out of the modding scene for awhile (I'm actually pleased with stock Android on my Nexus devices).
Thank you for any assistance that can be provided, even if it's the version number that I can roll back to before the TV queue.
Just to say that i also think its fu..in anoying! I was searching for some kind of solution and found this thread. Only thing left is to hope that youtube will change that in the upcoming update...
Well, I appreciate seeing that I'm not the only one being bothered by this. I had forgot about this thread do to the (seemingly) lack of interest and I was reading comments on my tablet while a video played on my Chromecast, when the video ended it changed to the next video on my tablet and gave no ****s as to what I was doing. Android/Google used to be the king in my book as they gave options for everything, but they seem to be following in the same footsteps as Apple nowadays and it is sorely disappointing.
Ok, this has got to be affecting more people now. I thought my newest mishap was just a glitch, but even after reboots the bug (feature) exists now anytime I stream anything from my laptop as well! The goddamn problem is also WORSE than the tablet issue because at least the tablet takes you to the video it is streaming so you can stop it an remove it from the queue. Apparently that wasn't a big enough F*** UP(!) for Google so now if you play a youtube video from a laptop that is part of a playlist, then play a different video that's not within that isn't within a playlist, when the non-playlist video is over the previous playlist will start playing again. ARE YOU ****TING ME!?!?! Now I have a playlist playing on my Chromecast that the ONLY ****ing way I can get it to stop is to start playing another video and then stop it!. Please inform me that the lead developer/designer setting the path for Chromecast has autism or some other disorder they have a legitimate reason for being this ****ing stupid.
I totally agree with you guys, it doesn't make any sense why it behave that way!!
bumping this, as i'm bothered by this as well
wonder why it doesn't affect more people though... it's probably not a widely used feature
I am also very pissed off with this! Every now and then, in the middle of the video, it pops up.
It stays there for hours (at the minimum) and it lowers that brightness and has the annoying symbol for it covering the content of the video!!!
This is extremely disappointing!
Bothered by the same thing. The problem was fixed a while ago, but now it seems it's back. As soon as I want to play/cast a video, the TV queue is populated with all other videos in that playlist. I would like it to play THAT video, then stop. :/ I can removed one and one video, but that sucks when it's maybe 60 videoes in that list.
Hello everyone,
As you all know youtube app on android and ios does not support Chromecast audio, so I've developed a new android app that let users cast youtube to Chromecast Audio. It finds only audio track, so you do not need to worry about network traffic, as the audio track size is usually much smaller than the video size. My intension is to support more websites, currently it works best for youtube.
Key features:
- Detect music audio tracks from the websites you visit and cast to Chromecast
- Support queue, so you can add many items once and let Chromecast do the rest
- Support repeat playback, repeat all/one/none/shuffle
- Support playback and volume controls
- Built-in browser with multi-tabs
- If websites contain both video and audio, this app will select only audio track, so you do not need to worry about network traffic, as the audio track size is usually much smaller than the video size, which is very efficient for Chromecast Audio.
The app works pretty the same way as Google Youtube App, you click on a video, it shows a dialog and let you choose to play or add video to queue, and it also allows you to move the queue items up and down, and play the queue on repeat (repeat none, all, one or shuffle).
It can also with normal Chromecast video, of course, but you only see thumbnail on the tv screen, and the music, not the video, as I already mentioned - only audio.
Here's the video demo on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEGkoC6LPp0
And the app on PlayStore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sibimobilelab.castwebaudio
Great job!
What I miss:
-Add some way to store playlists
-Add whole playlist from YouTube (This could be too traffic intense and lead to banning the app that is already in gray area...)

Hi,
The idea is to create playlists with your youtube account and I will implement the feature to add the whole playlist to the queue. I will try to do so in upcoming releases.
I know it's risky to do things with youtube, but how do you know it's in gray area?

If you are asking yourself: "Is this legal?", then it is in the gray area.
You are providing easy way to get content without paying (YouTube red or ads).
-the playlist feature will be better if it works with playlists in general not just ones from your account.
-storage is local.
Because:
1.spares all the queries you have to make for each song in playlist every time you open it(there are playlists with hundreds of songs).
2.privacy concerns
Well, I think gg should provide youtube support for Chromecast Audio for free, just like they do with normal Chromecast, since they do not send ads to stream in normal Chromecast as well.
This app allows users to cast to chromecast audio only, not anywhere else, and not play locally or download videos/audios which I think will make it more "legal". So just let's wait and see
About storing the playlists, since I'm not using youtube API, and youtube is the only one of many websites this app supports, the video/audio links that I can get live only for a short time (approx. 1 day) then they will get expired, so storing playlists is not an option for me unfortunately. The official youtube app also does not store playlists locally.
Then make sure to not throw hundreds of requests at once when parsing the playlist.
And one small thing: the "playing" icon (the three animated bars) is annoying (at least for me). You have made plain simple UI keep it that way and just put the simple triangle thing without animation ( ▶ ). It's an Unicode symbol. (one less image to take care of).

Ok, thank you, I'll keep this in mind
This is GREAT! I purchased Chromecast audio only to find out I can't cast from Youtube app. Such a stupid move from Google
Perfect
@SibiMobile
1. is there a way you implement playing playlists from Youtube?
2. is there a way we can donate to you, as you're a life saver bro!

Hi,
Thank you for your offer, unfortunately this app development is suspended and I've removed it from playstore. Now I'm working on an replacement - Amaze Browser, it can also cast youtube to chromecast audio, however the queue function is not yet added, I do plan to add it in future releases.

Great! I installed it and it works. Only thing I'm missing is playing Youtube playlists. That the app would automatically play YT playlist videos in a row... other than that, big up!!

It would be a heavy request to google server and I avoid doing this to protect the app in play store . In fact I removed most of the things with YouTube - download, background playing, only leave the Chromecast feature.
Pls keep in mind that the queue feature is not yet added in Amaze Browser, continue to use Tubo cast if you need this feature.

Tubo Cast was a great app so far!!! It would be great if you publish a hacked version out of the Play Store... I'd be glad to donate to you! Youtube playlist support is a must in my opinion... it'd be a killer feature for sure!
Maybe you could publish it on the Play Store "as is", and let we download an unofficial plugin that enables that feature!
Probably I'm only dreaming...

Hi, I cannot promise the playlist feature, what I have right now is a new version of tubo cast with the fix for the disconnection issue, I can upload it here.
Do you encounter the disconnection issue by the way?

Mh... I'm a new Chromecast Audio user, since I bought it last week, anyway, I tried several way to cast youtube contents to that thing... and your app (I found it somewhere around the web after reading this post) is the best solution because it doesn't need a constant stream between phone and chromecast. It'd be absolutely perfect with playlist support... and I mean perfect indeed!
I didn't have disconnection issue till now... I'm having more issues with apps like Deezer, just to say, because it randomly disconnects, starting to play the sound from my phone's speaker...
By the way "I can't promise" means "no" or "maybe"!

Means " no" for now
If you encounter the disconnection issue, follow the workaround mentioned in the home page to solve it
Again we published it to playstore, and also added premium verion.
Change log:
- Upgraded browser, added startpage, bookmark, history, search suggestion
- Use wifi wakelock to prevent disconnection issue
- Upgraded to more stable version of Google Cast API
- Added premium version
1.What is premium? Just supporting your efforts or something else? One can't really understand from changelog/app.
2.Is there a typo in the name? I see now TubCast instead of the previous TubeCast.
3.What is the difference to the other browser app that you are developing.
4.Is there a list of supported sites?
5.Any chance that vbox7.com can get into the list of point 4?
6.Youtube playlist support is not on the table anymore?
Thanks for update.

regarding your question:
1/ Yes premium is to add a little support for the development
2/ Tubecast is the name in playstore, in the app I made a tupo name Tubcast which is funny
3/ It supports queue, the other browser does not yet support queue, this one focuses on chromecast audio and shows popup dialog directly when it finds audio links, this app is also more lightweight and removed part of the UI in compare to another browser,
and the UI is more close to the youtube app
4/ It supports most of the sites except flash websites
5/ Will need to check with vbox7.com
6/ You still need to add songs one by one, adding the whole youtube playlist is not possible
