Google started supporting it in Gmail 5.0. It isn't device-specific.

Your article is 5 months old and at the time the Nexus devices were the only ones running Android L.
My article has a link to the official Google APK, not a third party one. Any device running Lollipop, which the S6 does, supports Exchange through Gmail.

You don't. The article I posted was from when Gmail 5 was announced and not yet available on the Play Store. The one on the Play Store (v5.1.89985675) has full Exchange support.

See attached. This is what I have installed. No mention of exchange and mine doesn't have an option to add exchange

I have the S6 edge and the latest gmail from the play store, but doesn't allow you to connect an Exchange account. My Nexus 5 does. Either it's blocked on the S6 or on non-Nexus devices. Frustrating as the Samsung email app sucks.

Thanks for the suggestion... Much better alternative to the stock Samsung Email app. Only issue that have with Outlook so far, is that the calendar doesn't integrate with the device calendar app.
But I can live with that for an overall improvement.

I use either the calendar of outlook which is integrated in the app or the google calendar which is great from the play store. It syncs but not sure which setting does the trick.
Alternatively you can just create another exchange account and sync only the calendar, so you can have email through outlook and use the stock samsung calendar app or google calendar app for the calendar which will be synced through the new exchange account.

Which takes me right back to my original question. If there is official support for this, why does it need to be downloaded from unofficial mediums?

It is not officially supported except on Nexus devices. The new Gmail officially supports other IMAP/POP3 accounts on all devices but not Exchange. You need the Exchange Services to get it unofficially.

[Q] Problems adding Facebook account on Verizon model

Hey, guys. I've noticed other phones having this problem, and it looks like the Xperia Play on Verizon is affected, too. When I go to Menu/Settings/Account & sync and try to add a Facebook account, it goes right back to the Account & sync page without adding Facebook. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it with no success. Is there some sort of workaround?
Thanks
looks to be a issue w/ our phone.. I posted the same thing in general.
I added my fb account without any problems..

you are not running stock GB on Verizon tho
Yeah, I suppose I should have posted what I'm running. Currently I'm running Android version 2.3.2, Build number 3.0.E.2.89
All stock. (On a side note, this is also preventing me from rooting at the moment.)

This is a remnant from the other builds I think. On other stock android devices, Facebook can still be a contact provider. Something is blocking it in the OS level from some tweak by SonyEricsson.
HOWEVER! You can get around it by using SonyEricsson's Life.Contacts as a synch partner to synch up FB contacts.

Hmm... I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the link.

Yeah, this is an issue, I think, that has to do with Sony stripping the Xperia facebook-in-android experience parts out of the phone, but forgetting to re-enable the FB built-in synch that it was blocking.
So for right now, you have to use the Life.Contacts app to be able to synch FB. The problem with it though, is that the config is only available through Life.Contacts' widget. So it makes it a bit of a pain. It also only works with one account type at a time. So you can't use Life.Contacts to synch FB, Twitter, and other social networks at the same time to my knowledge.
Ok so... How do you actually get this to work? I downloaded and installed life.contacts and linked to my facebook, but my contact still don't show their pictures and info. Did I do something wrong?

Haxsync and KitKat

Hey guys, has anybody tried had sync? I always used it on my nexus devices, however, the last update for it is on October 6th, way before KitKat release date. I've read through some of the reviews and some have mentioned of it preventing phone from going to deep sleep and causing wake locks. That was on a galaxy phones though, no mention of issues on nexus 5. I have just got the nexus, don't really want to install something that's not fully compatible yet.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Working fine for me.. Just got my phone a couple hours ago, so can't really say much on the wake lock part. But, the contacts sync up and its fine so far..
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Why not try it for your self? If it causes problems just uninstall it. Plan and simple. Not like it can brick your phone because an app isn't 100% compatible.
Working fine for me too.

I have sync.me on one of my old androids letting it update my contacts...good idea if you have a old phone laying around...not sure but you could use haxsync like that too.

I did when I got my nexus. My battery died faster than expected. I looked through logs, and noticed that yahoo weather was draining a lot of battery on the background, ended up uninstalling that and haxsync because I figured that it could have been both as android usage was also high. Today, everything was fine. I will try to reinstall it.
I do seem to get some contact pics synced, I'm guessing by default Facebook app still doesn't sync contacts on stock, right? Pictures might be coming from Google +?

Been using haxsync for a week now on my N5 & no battery drain/wakelocks according to bbs from haxsync so its ok to use.

MersauX,
Can you please tell me where you found it? What link? When I search for the Haxsync APK, I find a lot of sites, but I am always a bit leery at downloading them from these types of places since I worry about the files authenticity. Thanks in advance.

Contact pics

I sold my note 3 yesterday and bought a nexus 5.
In the stock contact app I don't see pictures on the contacts.
On Samsung n HTC it use to merge FB and wapp pics and show as contact pics.
Is there a way to do it here? I've got the fb account set up and it's working.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
You need an app to do it, e.g. Haxsync:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mots.haxsync
Stock Android doesn't have the option to sync with Facebook contacts
HaxSync is blocked by Facebook at the moment. SyncMe is the better option. Its improved a lot recently.
I paid the money and it didn't work..luckily the refund option was still available.. Thank you.. I'll try that

Sometimes have to allow Haxsync to sync a few times at first, depends on how many contacts you have to sync (I only have 56 contacts on my phone). Personally, it's the best app I've used, been using it on my old phones (GNex, Nexus 4) and now my Nexus 5

Stock MMS

Looking to buy a Nexus 5, but I refused to use Hangouts. Anyone been able to just pull stock\aosp mms.apk and sideload it, no root? Or does it require root to run?
In Play store: SMS Messaging (AOSP). That's what I use.

Alternatively you could use 8sms which is the AOSP MMS with some modifications.

Not really a stock app but I found Textra to be very good. (Partially because you can change the notification icon, and the layout is very minimalist.

Open Hangouts, go to settings and log out of all associated Google accounts. Then, Hangouts will not send or receive "Hangouts" messages, only handle sms/mms like a "normal" text messaging app.
As for "stock" MMS, Hangouts is the new "stock." It is what comes out of the box on Nexus devices now.

So you'd rather take an app, from someone random online, and side load it rather than trust one from the play store?
Hmmm, interesting.
Personally I'd go the other way. But that may just be me.

I don't recall asking for an apk. Merely asked if anyone had luck in doing so. I intend to either compile one or pull one from a trusted rom. I wasn't about to install any apk handed to me, but then again that's just me...
It's a moot point anyway
I don't get it??? The phone comes with messaging and hangouts. So use messaging, not hangouts.
How'd this get so complicated? Lol
---------- Post added at 07:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:17 PM ----------
Also...."don't trust apps" from play store? Just read the comments. Any pitfalls will be talked about in play store comments.
If you have trust issues, android may not be for you. This isn't an insult....just a comment based on your posts....but the iPhone app store is much more strict.....you may have been more suited to it.
Just my 2 cents.

Any reason you refuse to use hangouts? I felt the same way, but after giving it a chance, and their latest update, its all I use, once I got used to it. I prefer the clean ui and stock feel.
CM11 ROM has messaging built into it, so I'm sure it can work, but give hangouts at least a week.
