[Q] How to restore to bone stock with backed-up TA partition - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I cracked my screen and the top half of the digitizer doesn't work now. I sent it in to be repaired (damage claim, not warranty claim) but it turns out if it has modified software they just straight up won't touch it.
So after sobbing to myself here's what I did:
Flashed the stock FTF to it
Locked bootloader
Rooted ROM
Tried to restore DRM keys (I used TA backup before unlocking the Bootloader)
And it all seems well and good, the PC companion doesn't throw an unrecognized software error anymore but the DRM keys for MERLIN and the other two show up with "Unknown Error"
Is there something I'm missing? And also I'm just assuming the center will check for these things and boot my phone back to me again so I'd like to get them as close to perfect as possible before trying again. I'm not looking for them to fix my phone for free. I just want the right people repairing it.
EDIT: Just FYI I have a D6603

Yeah :\
One thing I'm worried about is I backed up the partition the very day that an exploit was found. So I think the TA backup utility was able to do it but is there any chance there was a compatibility update that needed to happen?

I did the same too.
Root My z3 just after the exploit had been discovered and backup the keys using TA backup tool.
Actually I did unlock mine quite a few times already and successfully restored the keys every time with TA backup.

What method are you using to lock the bootloader? I just hit the checkbox on the FTF flasher app so maybe that's the problem? I guess I'll try it with fastboot instead?

Actually, you don't need to relock the bootloader.
Restoring TA backup automatically relocks the bootloader.

Well I feel kinda dumb for not checking this first. But I went into the service tests and checked the bootloader and it's still showing up as unlocked so that explains that. Now why I'm having difficulty locking it is another concern.
So I booted into fastboot and entered fastboot oem lock and now it's just sitting... I'm not sure it's doing anything (first time I've tried to lock rather than unlock) It just made a ... then the cursor is blinking on a new line... So I'm a little concerned there but there's gotta be a way to relock it right?

I'm at work now so I can't test but my concern is that I've already tried that a few times. I didn't check bootloader status after each one, just the keys. So far using fastboot, the TA backup tool, and the flashtool doesn't seem to work. The TA tool and the flashtool seem to think everything went fine while fastboot just hangs...
I do like that now at least I know what's wrong, so I just need all the ways to lock a bootloader...

When you restored ta partition it will be relocked automatically, you won't need any other steps to relock bootloader

That's what I'm trying to tell you! I restored the keys using TA-Backup and it says everything was successful but in the service tests the bootloader still shows as unlocked and the keys show an unknown error though they are "Active" I'm not sure what that means really.

Alright got it.
At some point I did that thing in TA-Backup where you convert the backup into a new type that the later versions of TA can use (oor at least that's how I interpreted it) and I forgot I did that. So I tried using one of the older versions and it worked perfectly!

No, but there is a change that you'll get a bootloop thus you need to reflash an ftf file.
i did not had any prob like bootloap or erase.bt wen my frnd unlocked his xperia sp's booloader his internal storage got wiped and also a factory reset.dont know why that happened
Thank you both for your reply, that is the reason I asked in first place. Have heard both versions before, some have had no issues whatsoever some had to re-flash their FTF while some had their internal storage wiped and phone reset.
I will post my results in this thread when I'm done with unlocking. Mind you that may take a while since I really have phone setup perfectly with no bugs and good battery time. Rooted and still on 15.0.A.2.17 but as I said everything works like a charm and I am one of those people that subscribe to "if it's not broken then don't fix it" theory. Thanks again.

[Q] Phone bricked

I live in Europe so i don't know if unlocking it voided my warrenty or what i need to do
Please help me :crying:
i've managed to install a new image on it but when i start my phone i get this message: "unfortunatley the process com.android.phone has stopped"

Well, as you seem to actually get past the bootscreen and just getting force closes, i am guessing all files didnt flash properly or maybe you missed some commands (like clear userdata). Sure you are flashing the right firmware for your phone? Also, all the errors or text you get while flashing will be very helpful! Don't worry, as long as your fastboot itself is working, you phone really isnt bricked. Can you access recovery and all other things?

Well, that's weird. You can unlock with no issues, but that will factory reset (clean sdcard, reset everything, as you already know). What actually caused the black screen issue though?
Edit: Why relock the bootloader though? No reason to do that.

Hmm, unlocking shldnt in any way cause that. What happened after you typed the unlock code at fastboot? Did the phone reboot normally? Got the motorola boot graphics? Or did it just go blank immedi. after inputting oem unlock with code? You mentioned that you reset after this, how exactly did you do that? "Factory" option in fastboot?

Well i typed fastboot oem lock begin , reinstalled using this tut: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47820707#post47820707 , fastboot oem lock. after that i wouldn't work so i reinstalled it again and no it works perfectly.
I quite afraid to reunlock him because that was the reason it crashed
Hmm, i have no idea why everyone is doing oem lock before or after installing stock firmwares, is it necessary? Where is this mentioned? I had no problem flashing different firmwares without using oem lock command even once.
Imo, the oem lock command seems to be causing probs to many ppl. Just don't use those commands at all
(i would like to see a post which suggested the locking part before or after flashing stuff)
So, its unlocked and working fine now?
Since i have unlocked it i have never locked it.
Yeah, no reason to do so.

It is reversible using flashtool
However, it still will not restore TA partition so it can be seen if you have unlocked.
The only way to completely reset to factory conditions is to restore a TA backup, but the only way to get that is to root before unlocking

I do not want to talk about warranty's.
All I am saying is that in order to restore your phone to factory settings you need a stock TA partition. To restore a stock TA partition after unlocking the bootloader you need a backup of a TA partition taken from your phone. In order to make that backup you need root.

Again, as said numerous times in this thread, if you could be bothered to read the links or a quick read of the forum you'd know.
In my opinion, if you want to "mod" a phone, get a Nexus or a HTC One M8. Sony phones going all the way back to Xperia X10 are rubbish with custom Roms and "mods"
Right now, you cannot return completely to stock.

[Q] Can someone give me their backed up TA File? And other questions

Hi, I'm in complete meltdown today. I didn't do thorough research and unlocked bootloader on my Z3. Now I regret it.
I heard you could restore the DRM files by mounting the TA files back onto the phone. Can someone give me their backed up TA files so that I can restore DRM features on my phone? I cried this morning because of my ignorance.
If not, can someone help me add "CWM-Based Recovery 6.0.4.7 Recovery" on my phone? I can't seem to load "Advance Stock Kernel with CWM Recovery v01 (FW: 23.0.A.2.93)" onto my phone. The program used to load it won't just make it happen.
I think I can handle the rest after that, but I need some suggestions.
Will using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
brick my phone? It won't if I follow the steps correctly, right?
Other than that, can someone find me a PERFECT alternative for Music ID?
Is there also any way to restore "Sony Entertainment Media?"
How about fixing "Audio Quality and Volume Enhancements?"
Finally, will "PS4 Remote Play" still be broken?
I tried emailing [email protected] with the following message:
Hi, is there a way to reload lost DRM keys on a locked bootloader on
my Z3 phone?
Here's the story:
I didn't backup the TA partition on my phone and I unlocked bootloader
which made me lose the DRM files.
I'm in the process of relocking my phone. After relocking my phone,
can I send my phone to your repair center so that you guys can re-add
the DRM files?
From my understanding, you could delete the old partition and add a
new partition into my phone that has the DRM files, correct?
I hope to get a reply soon. Thanks.

I am sure someone could share it with you, but you will be a fool to restore it. The TA partition is individual. If you restore one from another phone you will permanently, 100%, completely hard brick your phone. Do not even think about doing it.

No, they will not help. It well documented that unlocking the boot loses functionality, why would they restore it for you when you admit to unlocking and throwing away your warranty? It is actuall 100% impossible to restore the keys after unlocking unless you took a backup prior to unlocking.
You can however, do a search for restoring DRM functionality, that may help you.
I think you have to try to software it by sony companion (re-instal the frimware). if you cant then try to lock your bootloader and try again to frimware it by sony companion
gregbradley, I followed all the instructions on the internet and I can't get it to install CWM recovery. Maybe later on after work (8PM EST -5 GMT) you can do teamviewer with me? Or am I being unreasonable here?
As for Music ID, please give me the alternative you prefer the most.
Sony Entertainment Media shows as "unavailable" on my phone. Basically, unlocking bootloader killed it.
As for "Audio Quality and Volume Enhancements," audio quality has been degraded because of unlocking bootloader. I was wondering if there's a software or app out there that fixes it.
As for "PS4 Remote Play", any apps out there that remotely connects to the PS4?

Which device do you actually have (D6603 etc)
You should now flash a FTF and exclude system (and kernel if you have just flashed a custom kernel)
How did you install CMW? was it via flashing the doomkernel? That is for D6603 only
Yes, I own D6603, the Z3, not the compact or other variants.

Yes, it is possible. First of all you need to flash to MM and backup your TA partition (if DRM keys are important to you). Then flash back to N. Then unlock bootloader and flash kernel. And only then you will be able to root it.

Catastrophic heat death

If you follow guide closely (most important step - BACKUP YOUR TA PARTITION!) the process is fully reversible and will not void your warranty. You just have to remember to restore DRM keys before sending phone on warranty

You must flash a stock ROM first (you lose root) and then you flash/restore the TA-backup.

Had to send it in for repair.
Not sure if I had been lucky, but I received it back in normal condition in two weeks after repair... without charge
Seems I'm lucky than - I've always first flashed DRM keys and do a reflash later But I did it without booting the phone
Answering the @Nidhal AKA the king question: If you reflash DRM keys you have to also reflash original firmware. That way you lose root, but you DRM keys are back in place. Phone will remain locked until you will unlock bootloader again. So yes - DRM keys will survive normal flashing once they are restored

The fact it relocks the boot implies you must have a stock kernel to boot. Actually you can restore the TA partition and then flash a stock rom as long as you don't reboot in between.
AFAIK, even if you reboot you can still flash a FTF and unbrick it. It only gives you a soft brick anyway. I have done this loads of times on previous xperias.
I've dont the part till im ready to downgrade to MM but im worried that it will hard brick my phone like the Xperia V I used before
Not sure about it tho since really just got the phone and the overheating and the standby power loss is putting me into a fuss
