[Q] XBMC/Kodi for Android - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Similar to how you can run OpenELEC or Raspbmc on a Raspberry Pi, and have an OS completely dedicated to XBMC, is there a ROM out there that anyone knows of that I can install on my old GS3 that would perform the same functions? Or if not a dedicated ROM, maybe a bare-minimum ROM that I can run XBMC on and leave it running?
I use a Raspberry Pi as a home media center and while it works just fine, it's a bit under-powered and lags when browsing through some of the XBMC addons. Since XBMC and some of the custom builds (including addons) run just fine on Android, I'd like to use my old GS3 as a dedicated media center.
Any ideas are much appreciated!

Did you ever have any luck finding anything? I'm planning on doing exactly the same thing.
I'm thinking maybe even just rooting and flashing Cyanogen will offer a decent starting point for a compromise of sorts. I can handle not having a dedicated system like OSMC but being able to boot straight into kodi would be good, as would having all other unnecessary processes disabled.
I don't think CEC -> HDMI remote control would work from what I've read but Kore app works ok.

Is it possible to use an old phone like an android stick?

I am currently thinking about building a small streaming device for my home theater.
One idea I am having is to build a lightweight NAS out of a raspberry pi b board and add a second device running xbmc or plex for streaming from the nas.
As there are currently hundreds of android sticks (and no one really seems to know which one is best) it got me wondering if I could not just use my old Galaxy S?
Is there a way to stripe all phone related stuff from it and just have some kind of custom rom that uses the hardware like a regular android tv stick?
It really only needs wifi, hdmi out and enough power to run xbmc + stream in 1080p.
Does anyone know if this is possible at all?
AFAIK the HDMI out of the Galaxy S does not work in custom roms because it uses proprietary Samsung code. So it is probably impossible. I also seriously doubt that the hardware of the Galaxy S is capable of displaying HD media in full resolution.

TV box/stick for Skype, iPlayer, Sky Go

Hi everyone
I've had a self-build HTPC (Zotac ION atom mini itx) sat under my TV for many years which I would now like to kill off.
Most local video/audio streaming duties have been replaced by a Raspberry Pi + OpenElec which works perfectly, so I will keep that in place.
But thanks to Microsoft I still end up using the HTPC for Sky Go (Silverlight) and Skype. And iPlayer/ITV Player etc.
So I'm in the market for some sort of Android box/stick to which I can hook up a USB webcam for Skype. (I have a MS Lifecam HD which is superb, no idea whether that will be compatible with Android)
I know the Sky Go and iPlayer apps are extremely fussy when it comes to Android version and typically the device cannot be rooted.
And certain Android boxes work with certain webcams etc.
Just wondering if anyone has found an un-rooted box that works with a decent variety of webcams, stable with Skype, iPlayer + Sky Go apps?
Ideally controllable with some sort of airmouse or ir remote.
Any suggestions for sticks/boxes/remotes?
Cheers, B
Try installing Android x86 on the HTPC. You have to root to get gApps, which it is very hard to find a compatible version.
Android-x86.net
Android-x86.org has 4.4, but has gApps.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Free mobile app
Interesting idea. But ideally I'd like to get rid of the HTPC because it's quite big (mini ITX), quite noisy (fans need replacing) and most likely uses quite alot more power than a TV box/stick.

'Best' or 'Favorite' Android Stick & Console Computer Hardware?

Has anybody started a thread with their 'best' or 'favorite' Android Stick & Console Computer hardware? I currently have a Google ADT-1 (w/ PureNexus), but I'm looking to sell this and upgrade in favor of something newer.
I guess I'm looking for suggestions based upon cost, performance, support for newer android versions, ease of use, root access, etc. I recently was helping a friend who had a 'Minix' device, and was impressed with the UI and how easy it was to add shortcuts to the 'desktop' for apps (no need to rely on Leanback Launcher apps, etc). I don't necessarily need support for 4k, but was seeing what people are buying.
Ultimately the goal is that this device will replace my TV set top box, so I will have Xfinity Stream TV, Netflix, Kodi, and other streaming platforms on my television screen.
Thanks in advance!
Since there hasn't been any traction on this thread, I thought I would add an update. After a little research, it seems I should definitely look toward Android TV 'box' with the s905x processor. Then the next step would be to find one of these devices that can rooted and / or one the supports a custom ROM. BTW, this would be for use in the USA.

Controlling T-Mobile TVision HUB v2 from Linux laptop

I just purchased the above device planning to use it to replace my Raspberry Pi Zero W in my media system. I have been controlling the pi via SSH from my laptop and have an sftp share to it for file transfers from my laptop. I mostly made use of vlc on the pi this way, which worked quite well.
Obviously I will usually be using the remote with the device when I want to select and view video content. But when I am working with music and internet radio it is more convenient to do so from my laptop where I have an actual keyboard.
Obviously the TVision environment differs from the Raspbian running on the pi, so I doubt that I can take the same approach with it. I am working now to take advantage of the fact that it is a Chromecast device, which allows me to manage internet radio from my laptop via stream2chromecast. What I still need is a way to load media onto the device from my laptop, preferably via a share of some sort, and to be able to initiate or change playback there from the laptop.
I have installed vlc on the device, but from what I can tell there is no support in this version for using one of its remote control interfaces included. Of course this is the android version of vlc, so even if I can install and use an SSH connection to the device I don't know how to interact with it from the terminal window.
Has anyone worked with this device and found a way to do what I want to with it? Has anyone taken a similar approach with another Google TV device that should work here?

Best current option for ATV Openelec Dualboot

For the past couple of years i have been running my home Kodi / Android TV boxes setup via a couple of Ugoos X3 boxes accessing LAN stored media files.
Lately i have been getting frustrated by the poor wifi performance of the ugoos box and looking to upgrade.
There are various uses of the box (streaming sports events via the internet, better youtube) for which I find AndroidTV much preferable to Kodi so Sasvlad's dualboot option on my Ugoos X3 has been amazing for me. (By the way, I have been living under the presumption that simply running Kodi within Android will not be a great solution for me to get an optimal smooth Kodi experience - especially regarding accessing my SMB LAN stored library of media etc - is this a correct assumption?)
So...I was just hoping to see if anybody knew if Sasvlad's builds were still the best way to get the ATV / Openelec dualboot (or equivalent) that i want...and if so, what is the best current box for this? I am looking at Ugoos AM6 or AM7 or UT8, although all seem a little tricky to get ahold of in the UK.
Thanks very much if anybody has any input on this
