5.1 Battery Issues and Wi-Fi Router - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, I’d like to start by saying I believe, overall, battery life on the N5 with 5.1 is better than 5.0. However, after upgrading, whenever I was home I noticed extremely poor battery life—and the built-in near useless battery monitor didn’t reflect anything interesting. Thinking it might be related to the poor cell signal I have at home, or my Wi-Fi connection—because I didn’t have the issue when I was not on Wi-Fi at home—I upgraded the firmware in my wireless access point at home and the problem just went away. Instantly battery life was back to normal.
Hope this helps someone else!
Cheers.

I'm curious what kind of router you have? Router reboot probably would have resolved it for a while. Doesn't matter though, battery life still sucks since 5.x.

Technically my router doesn’t apply here, but most people have a router that also does Wi-Fi. I use an enterprise-class wireless access point at home from Ruckus Wireless and, while possible, rebooting enterprise-class devices tends not to change much.

Had you searched a bit you would've found some older threads from 4.4.2-4.4.4 where people discussed certain network traffic causing weird wakelocks on their phones. Given that 5.x is still new we're not seeing a lot of talk about this yet and it can't be certain whether it's the same issue.
This could also be a factor of settings you have. Wifi optimization, scan while sleeping, avoid poor connections, etc. These are variables that need to be accounted for.
That said, the best test for you right now is to run some controlled tests.
Before you go to bed, reboot your phone, note the battery level, and leave wifi enabled. Note battery level when you wake up and about how much was lost per hour of sleep.
Next night, do the same. Reboot phone, but turn wifi off this time. Note amount lost per hour in the morning.
This determines if wifi is the culprit. If it is, turn on AP isolation on the router (wireless devices can't see/talk to each other), reboot phone, enable wifi, note amount lost per hour. If AP isolation fixes the issue, then it's the weird traffic wifi wakelocks we saw in the past.
I'm still on 4.4.4 because **** lollipop and it's issues, and because my phone works fine without any weird crazy battery loss. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. So I can't really test for you.
But you need to start testing, controlling for variables, and recording results if you want to narrow down the problem.

[Q] WiFi disables itself

Anyone found their Chacha disables it's WiFi on it's own? Mine has done it twice to my knowledge. The first time I assumed it was down to the power saving kicking in, but today, the battery had 60+% remaining and it cut off after about 10 hours.
I've had numerous Android handsets, from 1.5 thru to 2.2 and none of them disabled WiFi. The router is in the room directly below where the phone is, so signal strength is not an issue. The BB9700 that was also in the room at the same time still has it's connection.
On a different note, disabling FB chat and having a good signal (via Femtocell) seems to have improved battery performance. Still have 50% battery after 12 hours and about 30mins of calls and FB/twitter, with WiFi on for 10 hours and tracesaver app, which uses GPS and uploads data on phone usage.
Will do a firmware upgrade, as I'm on 1.15 right now, but there are more bugs in this phone than I've seen on any other Android handset. Like the form factor, but the honeymoon period is coming to an end. Moto FIRE could be a suitable replacement, but I've not had a good history with Moto.
When you say disabling wifi, do you mean wifi turns off? Or you get disconnected from your router?
I have had issues where I will get disconnected from a router before.
Software version 1.15 is waay old, try updating to 1.57 here

You may need a goldcard (modified sdcard) to run this update, there's an easy tutorial how to make a goldcard here: theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
Hope that helps
Mine turns itself on by itself I am pretty sure its an app doing it but not found which yet

[Q] multi-AP wifi issues

I have a stock rooted atrix2 and was getting pretty good idle power usage (typically just over 1%/hr) and had tried both wifi sleep policies of 'never' and 'never while charging'.
I recently added another wifi AP to my house (D-Link DIR-601-A1 running dd-wrt) and configured it with the same SSID as my original (linksys wrt-54g running tomato). Suddenly, my battery life started to suck dramatically (10%/hr) and I noticed a few things after seeing my battery life *improve* when I left the house.
1. my wifi sleep policy would switch to *never* no matter how many times I switched it and *saved* that config.
2. my atrix2 would spend alot of time sending out SSPD packets (media service autodiscovery) and this probably accounted for the ****ty battery life.
3. this problem didn't change much until I stopped using the d-link and switched back to only the linksys.
I'm curious if anyone else has seen such strange wifi behavior out of their atrix2.
EDIT: I'm still seeing the sleep policy switch to 'never' even config'd to only use the old wifi AP. If I switch it back to 'never when plugged in', it auto-switches back to 'never'.
I have mine set to never and don't have anything like the battery drain you have. I use a rt n56u with third party firmware.also have a network drive attached as a file/media server.my battery lasts better than if I'm out using 4g.

I noticed that behaviour as well with my OG atrix, but I haven't tried it with the atrix2. There's got to be something on my atrix2 that is causing a spike in battery usage while connected to wifi, and auto-switching the sleep settings as well.
Anyone seen this before?
My (unrooted) Atrix 2 has a terrible time staying connected to WiFi, even after all manner of tinkering. Just seems to turn itself off after a certain amount of time, no matter the Sleep/Data Manager settings. Even on two different access points that I have configured in any number of ways.
Getting really frustrated.

I also had this issue until rooting the device. Haven't had the problem since.
I'm testing a theory on my Wifi problem (somewhat different from the OP, but perhaps still of interest). I'm someone who always hits the power button to turn my screen off rather than just letting it go back to sleep. It does appear that breaking myself of that habit, and leaving the phone to turn off the screen on its own, lets the WiFi stay connected. Otherwise, it's incredibly unstable when sleeping, with disconnects or sometimes the antenna ending up turned off.
I also have WiFi Keep Alive running, but that didn't appear to really help as much as just not using the power button.
We'll see if it continues to be the case.

I know what "Best wifi performance" does

At least one of the things it does is stop the phone going into the deep sleep. Based on CPU spy my phone had no deep sleep at all. When I turn it off my phone started going to deep sleep.
Not using that feature again. Good to know. Try it yourself.

This may in fact be the issue I have been having. After around an hour or so (seemed to vary) the WiFi seemed to stop working. The WiFi symbol was still there and even doing a ipconfig check all the "numbers" came back correct yet there really was no connection.
I am going to give this a try and really hope it works. This issue has had me contemplating returning the phone, which I really don't want to do.
Funny thing is, if this works it was not part of the solution that HTC recomended me trying to fix the problem.
Maybe this is connected to the push notification problems that the phones are having while on WiFi.

I had that option checked and I noticed my battery life sucked. When checking usage I saw "Android OS" had used 25%. I turned it off and it dropped to 5% or less
After turning this on last night I have not had to "toggle" the WiFi on and off like I had to do before. I am not quite convinced this fixed the issue but it seems to have a shot.
Only weird thing is after leaving WiFi on all night I checked the battery status to see what was using it and there was a large gap of the WiFi not using any battery but again I never had to toggle so I guess I am not sure what that means. Was the WiFi off during that time and I would have received no emails etc... Or was it really connected.
I am wondering if any of this may also have to do with my router. My previous phone would also loose connection to WiFi but no where near as often. However my other devices using WiFi (PS3, GoogleTV, TV. etc..) have never had an issue of loosing connection. So I am sticking to it is the phones fault

Wifi Issues

When I move into my room, my laptop gets 90%-100% signal strength from my Wifi, my phone however randomly looses signal completely and especially when I take up the phone to use it. It's very frustrating. Plus when I'm on 3G, it constantly switches from 3G to H too.
The 3g H switching is normal if you are on tmo us and running the eu roms and has been discussed quite a bit
not sure what you mean by losing signal, but i get diff bars diff places in my house. never lose the whole connection as in not being able to dl or browse web
did you run speed tests at these diff locations in house

I think you misunderstood his post. His primary problem is that the wifi on his phone doesn't come close to the signal strength his laptop has when in the same room.
The secondary problem was the 3g/4g switching.
OP -- I have no idea what to tell you.
no, i understood. just saying my phone wifi bars fluctuate even if my laptop has good signal. may just be the way they both display strength readings
i think op should run speed tests btw the two at same time. however both devices are splitting signal so may not be as good as only one running at a time
his speeds may be fine even though bars don't show it

I'm in Jamaica, no T-mobile. I'm not sure if I'm running an EU rom. My problem is that I loose connectivity to Wifi totally randomly in my room with even little motion. I mentioned my laptop for reference... it's like there's poor signal in my room. The phone'll just bit sitting on my bed, I hear an alert and pick up the phone to realize I've lost Wifi.
Speed is not the problem, I've been able to run a speed test to confirm I get the speed I'm supposed to get. Other times though, the speed test could not complete because I moved a little and lost connectivity.

Make sure that your SIM access cover is snapped in place.
It happened to me with the WiFi signal - The phone was losing signal, and had low signal 1 foot away from the router.
I 'pinched' the top-right corner of the access cover (thumb on the glass, index finger on the back cover) - I heard a 'click' and suddenly my WiFi was at full strength. I believe that the WiFi antenna is not connected unless it snaps together.
ok, not sure what to suggest. you could try turning airplane mode on and of and see if that helps
maybe router settings with the phone if you always had the issue
under settings/wifi/ tap on wifi then the 3 dot menu--Advanced. See if Keep Wi-Fi on during Sleep is Always. If not tap on it and change to Always
Also at bottom of Advanced menu is a DLNA setting, you could toggle that
barring that or someone else's ideas--maybe hardware and needs replaced
Try turning on Best Wifi Performance in Wifi, advanced settings.

Turning on best WiFi performance totally killed my battery life, but that may just be me.
If you're losing signal on one device but not another, I'd recommend changing the channel on your router. Interference on certain channels can cause weird issues with some devices. There are apps on the market that will show you which channels are congested in your area.

Hmmm... I'll try that. So far turning on DLNA and Best Performance hasn't made any difference. I'll try changing the channel when I get home later and post the results. I REALLY hope h/w is not the problem.. it's gonna be a hassle sending this back.
It might be worth gently cleaning the contacts exposed when you remove the SIM access panel. As District noted, good contact is necessary for wifi (and probably other features). Dust or a fingerprint may be problematic.
Anything to bear in mind when trying to clean it or adjust it? I'm really paranoid I'll mess it up.
make sure you use electrical cleaner
radio shack sells it, comes in spray can
if you haven't had sim card out or phone long, probably not issue. but, worth try
if you have another router, you can always try that
Nothing seems to work... I'm using channel 11 @ home which doesn't seem to be crowded. I have the same issue @ work with our router. I've been having this problem from I got the phone last week. This is after I initially removed the back cover to first insert my SIM.
I'm going to try and see if I can secure a cleaner... I tried blowing on it mean time. Also turned on DLNA and best wifi performance and all.
DLNA auto-IP setting worked for me.
Hi OP,
I had the exact same wifi issues on my One S. I tried the router at work, the router at home and my mates router with the same results.
Mine seems to work now, with no disconnections or manually connections. What seems to have worked for me -- Wifi - Advanced menu -- DLNA auto-IP setting - toggle on. Then restart, making sure the setting is still set after reboot. Seems to have fixed my wifi issues.
HTH.
Darren.

WIFI Power usage

There is a LOT of power consumption with WIFI on - even when the phone has the screen off. It's much worse than with LTE data on - even in this area of poor reception.. This is no matter if WIFI calling is on or off. (I want to use WIFI calling, due to poor LTE reception here.)
Is it just the nature of the beast, or can something be done about this?
Thanks
I ain't the only one! My phone has been draining like crazy and I've been on wifi the whole time. Years ago, I remember something about changing to a static IP to remedy it, but that doesn't seem to be the case now. I don't have any weird wlan wakelocks or anything out of the norm, so it's kinda a mystery at the moment.
I even tried in Safe mode, to no avail. This is while connected to home WiFi.
I've searched through all the setting in the phone and in my router. There is nothing that seems out of the ordinary. Only thing I could find was other people who had severe drain on the other Pixels after the 9.0 update.
I contacted support through Fi and they offered to replace my device, so there could be a hardware fluke somewhere (as we know with people reporting random reboots/shutdowns)
EDIT: So I think my issue was because of the static ip bug in Pie. Once I changed it to DHCP, the drain seems to be a lot lower.
I actually pretty much found the same thing earlier this morning. I normally use manually configured IPs and DNS servers. I decided to try DHCP and the issue went away.
