[Completed] [Q] Alternative to PA-GAPPS? - XDA Assist

Unfortunately @TKruzze has decided to take a break and as a result we no longer have access to his always up-to-date GApps packages. So, I would like to know if there exists a good alternative GApps package that is widely compatible with ROMs and is updated regularly?
Thanks!

Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. The other two main gapps packages are Banks and Slim. You'll find Slim here:
[GAPPS][5.0/4.4] Official Slim GApps & Custom GApps
Banks don't have a thread on XDA, and I can't post external links, but just Google "Banks gapps" and you'll get what you're looking for.

No response in two days, thread closed.

[Q] flashing Slim Gapps ??

Hello.
I've seen the post about flashing Slim Gapps on CyanogenMod.
And I've found different Gapps versions.
Slim_4.2.X_gapps_Nbsss_v1.zip
Slim_Gapps.4.2.2.build.8.zip
Can I use it also with other firmwares, such as MIUI? Or I will corrupt my firmware?
I'm using MIUI and I can't get the Play Store working in my mobile with common .apk installers.
I'm sorry I'm not allowed to post direct links nor write in the developer thread.

[Q] Gapps

Thanks

Normally GApps aren't included. When a dev includes a GApps package it's for some reasons (OTA compatibility, personal tweaks/theming...).

Thanks. I thought there was some legal reason that developers weren't allowed to include them, so was wondering why some roms did have them.

I have just read this:
AOSP ROMs aren't allowed to include Gapps because Gapps are proprietary Google apps. They're not open source, and they're not part of AOSP. It is illegal to use Google's IP (Gapps) without permission. They get around the restriction by making you download and flash the Gapps separately. Gapps are included in Touchwiz ROMs because Touchwiz ROMs are just modifications of the manufacturer's ROM, which already has the rights to use Gapps.

But flashing a GApps package from a custom AOSP ROM or from PA Team / Mister BaNkS is the same. (at the end)
EDIT
Licensing
In September 2009, Steve Kondik (Cyanogen of the CyanogenMod team) received a cease and desist letter from Google, demanding that the Google Apps not be included in the team's ROMs, since the ROM could be ported to devices which are not licensed to have the Google Apps. In turn, that would bypass the requirement for the devices to be licensed. For a few days, development on the ROM ceased, there were outcries from Android users all over the Internet, and many bloggers suspected Google had just shot itself in the foot.
Eventually, an alternate method was found,[2] whereby Google Apps are not included in the ROM proper but the Google Apps which came with a device would be backed up by the device's custom recovery or another app, and then re-installed onto the device once the new ROM was flashed. This would therefore "Google-ify" one's ROM.
In order to update the Google Apps for devices which have not been updated to the latest versions of Android, and to simplify the Google Apps installation process, the Google Apps are now traditionally packaged in a separate flashable ZIP which can be easily installed on top of a ROM. This allows for faster installations, easier upgrades of Google software, less tasks for the custom recovery to perform, more user-friendly installations, and an overall more streamlined process.

I think u should put your questions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877166
This topic is only for LiquidSmooth questions
About your question: Install BMM and do partition stuffs then you will be able to install 4 more custom ROMs on your phone :fingers-crossed:
But first, read this great tutorial (including videos)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2602229
System 6 Error when loading Nano/mini Gapps on LS v32 Atrix2
I got brave today, after much reading on the forums and watching Tech ArnY rooting videos and BMM 0.3.4 - Great information.
Here are the steps that I took today and their results:
1.) Rooted the Atrix 2 MB865 (AT&T) that has OTA ICS 4.0.4 ROM. Rooting was successful,
2.) Post install of MBB 0.3.4 and SuperUser, I kept the ICS 4.0.4 ROM on System 1 of the phone.
3.) Next, following Tech Arn Y's teaching, I was able to successfully flash LiquidSmooth (AcePort-LS-KK-Milestone-3.2-edison.zip) onto System 3 post wipe clean /dalvik, et cetera and successful install.
4.) So far, so good. Next I attempted to load GAPPS from this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942). Again, post check of MD5 check sum for both mini and nano GAPPS - no issues.
5.) While attempting to flash either the mini or nano GAPPS onto the Atrix 2 into System 3, it shows the following (E: Error in /ext/pa_gapps-modular-nano-4.4.4-20141121-signed.zip) (Status 6) Installation aborted.
6.) I can boot into either ROM without issues, however, even after a reflash of System 3 and again successful install of LS-KK-Miestone 3.2, GAPPS gives Status 6 install error.
Looking for clues in these forums, but I have not come across anything yet. Any/all help would be very much appreciated!
@Starrider17 I'm betting your gapps are too large for your partition size. Find the PA gapps thread and download the pico gapps then try again. If it fails again the PA gapps will generate a log and place it on your SD card to tell you why it failed.

Thanks 1BadWolf for the reply. At first, I thought that the size of the GAPPS was perhaps the issue, but it did not end up to be the case. After continuing my search in XDA Forums (a wealth of great information here without doubt!), I stumbled upon a video that explained Status 6 and Status 7 errors which are the most common when flashing GAPPS post ROM into any phone. In my case, here is the summary of the events:
1.) Flashed pa-gapps mini 4.4.4 (at 229 mbytes ) - Status 6 error.
2.) Wipe clean System 3 and then flashed pa-gapps-nano 4.4.4 (at 120 mbytes) 2x - Status 6 error.
3.) Being somewhat frustrated, and yet challenged, I took the clue for the status 6 error and by chance, I grabbed the Slim_mini-gapps 4.4.4 (at 65 mybtes) - Gapps successfully loaded!
4.) Wanting to confirm whether the issue lives in the size of the GAPPS - or - something in one of the scripts (Meta-INF > com > google > android > update-binary or update-script), I went ahead and did another Wipe-Clean and flashed Slim-normal-gapps 4.4.4 (at 183 mbytes) - Gapps successfully loaded
Summary: In business and in life, something a solution or a work-around is found and implemented without knowing the root cause!
Hopefully, the documenting of my journey here will be beneficial to someone down the road just as many of the posting in this forum have been (and continue to be) to me too!

Hey guys, thanks for trying out my Liquidsmooth port and offering your feedback. Unfortunately, I'm no longer able to work on the existing ports or even lollipop since development has completely died down.
This is because our current recovery, BMM isn't able to boot any lollipop rom and it's the only working one we have. All developers and supporters have moved on pretty much, so all you can do is just play around with what's there. I'm still kinda around with my A2, but don't have the time to do anything anymore since I've moved onto a newer device, work, life, etc.
If you want someone to blame for this, firstly blame Motorola for the locked bootloader and then blame Google for making 5.0 have enforced SELinux which is why we can't boot any LP rom. Aside from that, this device is amazing to have and I hope you all have a wonderful time with it.

[ROM] CyanogenMod 13 for Samsung Galaxy S5 | Android Marshmallow 6.0.1

READ THIS!
Me, myself, and I do NOT own ANY OF THIS nor do I take credit for any of this amazing work. I am simply reposting with some updated information. I will leave links for EVERYTHING.
OKAY AGAIN, LISTEN UP. Flashing ANYTHING like this may void certain warranties; and I, Albinoman887, or anyone else is responsible for dead SD card, broken SIM's, or bricked phones, or anything bad that may result from this. You are SOLELY responsible and are doing this at YOUR own risk.
All credit goes to TeamDouche and all other coders who contributed to CyanogenMod.
These builds are for KLTE (GSM) and (CDMA) variants.
Included in the unified (GSM) build are: KLTEXX, KLTELRA, KLTEMO, KLTECAN, KLTEACG, KLTEDCM, and KLTE
*Individual CDMA builds: KLTESPR and KLTEUSC*
*Individual GSM buulds: KLTEDV*
So, if your device is not listed in one of the Individual lists (The ones marked with an asterisk) Then you should flash the "Unified GSM" (Or KLTE) build.
So here are the features,
Built from CM Source
Service
Text
Data
Calling
Audio
Wi-Fi
Google Now
Bluetooth*
GPS
MMS
Video Playback
Audio Playback
Internal SD Card mounting
External SD Card mounting
IR Blaster**
NFC
*There has been reported issues of Bluetooth stuttering and some random crashes. This is a known issue. Complaining about it will do absolutely nothing. With that information, do what you will.
**IR Blaster has been tested using the Peel IR Remote (Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tv.peel.app&hl=en
Please note, some CyanogenMod Features have NOT been added yet, so be patient and don't be annoying about this.
Some things you do NOT want to do when flashing this,
Do NOT use superwipes,
Do NOT dirty flash, (And if you do, do NOT report bugs), do a clean flash (Which is wiping Data, Cache, and Dalvik Cache)
Download links!
Latest tested release is cm-13.0-20151227

If your phone's specific model number was NOT listed above and is a CDMA device, it is sadly NOT supported, for all other GSM devices flash the "Unified GSM" Build below.
KLTE Build archive: http://www.team-hydra.org/klte/rel/
GApps Package: www.opengapps.com
FLASHING INSTRUCTIONS!
You must have TWRP Installled in order to flash this ROM! Others may work but have NOT been tested!
This is really quite simple if you do this step by step.
Step 1.
Download the build specific for your device and grab a GApps package.
Step 2.
Move these over to an SD Card
Step 3.
Wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik Cache.
Step 3.
Flash the downloaded Cyanogenmod .zip folder
Step 4.
Wipe Cach and Dalvik Cache
Step 5.
Flash GApps package
Step 6.
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
Step 7.
Reboot System!
And congrats! It should work! And you can brag to all of your dev friends and tell them you're running Android version 6.0.1 ( Although the S5 has Marshmallow for it already.. :/ )
Now, here I will talk about NIGHTLIES,
IF you want to be as up to date as possible, I recommend flashing the NIGHTLY builds. The only thing is they may have some bugs lurking around. Although, I use these and have had NO problems whatsoever.

I will be happy to answer any questions but note that I am NOT a developer, so I'll only be able to answer SOME more basic or "noob" questions. For everything else, post on the original thread.
THE ORIGINAL THREAD WHERE ALL IF THIS IS FROM IS HERE:

And why is this thread needed in the Development section?
The original CM13 thread has all the information and the magical "search" button.
Any noob should first go through the General and Q&A sections before arriving here.
Could an admin close this useless thread?
Thank you in advance.

Its a more noob friendly version, as I myself have helped many noobs over on the original thread. Making this was am attempt to help them and get rid of noobish questions, as it gets repetitive and annoying.
On top of that, this has some updated information concerning GApps, bugs, and etc. as previously stated.

As well as those reasons, I am also planning on compiling for smaller devices that aren't supported in the original thread.
The last Cyanogenmod has fingerprint working, so if this is build from official CM13 source it should be working too

Yeah, man, but still this shouldn't be posted in the Development section
Right now there is zero development on this thread. In the future I plan to cook a ROM myself but you don't see me raising threads in the Dev section. Just saying

In my opinion it should be in the General section as an ultra-noob walkthrough guide for installing CM13 from absolute scratch. With the links towards a compatible recovery, root, as well as all the risks involved (breaking knox, changed/lost imei etc.)

Alright, can a mod move this thread over to the general section please? And sorry for any troubles man. Thanks.
In this version of CM are we able to move apps, backups, TWRP files to the external SD card?

Any rom without GApps? Degoogled?

For this S7 Exynos?
I've used a ton of these roms, but..Can any of these be completely de-googled?
lingeageos
find lingeageos from roms
We have LineageOS, Vanilla and microG
You could try e/OS but it ain't that good in my opinion
Every Lineage rom there is in this forum, comes with the phrase "Install gapps right after installing the rom itself don't try to boot to system before that if you want to use gapps (Or wipe data before installing them)" ...
So... Am I supposed to install GApps, and then microG on top of this "de-Googled" option?
Or can I install microG, from TWRP directly? And skip that step?

No.
Its not mandatory to install gapps in the first place.
Also you can directly install microG in place of gapps or just use the LineageOS microG version which you can find here
I was considering /e/ myself because it has an official ROM for this phone:
Info about Samsung Galaxy S7 - herolte
At least you can see what bugs have been reported with it there and decide for yourself if any of them look important for you or not. I don't know if any of the LineageOS community builds on the forums are likely to be better or worse in this regard? The other bit of info I can't find is how easy it is to go back to stock ROM if you have any issues with it. It appears to be based on Android 10 (Q), and I've heard it can be difficult to downgrade again to older Android versions?
For de-Googling it goes a bit deeper than just leaving out Google Play Services, but whether you care about lower level pings is up to you:
https://e.foundation/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/e-state-of-degooglisation.pdf
Calls to Google servers
Here is a decent overview:
And here is my initial failed attempt to de-Google the stock ROM. If anyone can help with troubleshooting that it would be much appreciated, or maybe I need to post it in a separate thread?
