5.1 random crash and "imaginary" battery drain - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I'm hoping someone can help..
For the last few weeks my Nexus 5 has been randomly crashing, this has progressively worsened. The phone crashes and completely shuts off, one second it will be working the next it will be off. When I turn the phone back on it thinks the battery is almost completely drained and, when the problem wasn't as bad, the battery level would slowly increase when left.
Now the problem has increased that, when it crashes, the phone will either not fully boot or crash again very soon after starting. The only way to keep the phone on it to have it plugged in, this also seems to prevent the crashes.
I have factory reset the phone and reflashed the latest factory image. I am also rooted.
I've attached two logcat files that I started recording before the phone crashed.
Any advice on how to fix this issue would be appreciated.
Thanks

It's normally an issue with the battery. When the device thinks the battery is dead (due to sudden voltage drop probably), it shuts down.

Thanks for replying. Does this mean if it have the battery repaired/replaced that the issue should go away? Are there any apps anyone could recommend to check if the voltage is the issue?

[Q] My phone keeps turning off.

My phone will randomly turn off out of nowhere. Earlier today I had 17% battery and it just turned off instantly. I turned it back on and had 87% battery. About 10 minutes later it instintly turned off again and when I turned it on I had 25% battery. It's getting really annoying. I never had this problem before, nor have I ever dropped it.
Is there something wrong with the pins on the back of the case or something?
Thanks in advanced for the replys.

i had this same issue, for me it helped to move all my apps back to my SD card and reformat my sd card. Since then it happend once again and that was after i dropped my phone and my sd card unmouted. but besides that occasion havent had it for about a three week now.
might be related to moving apps to sd card, not sure do if this actually started the problems for me.
I m on stock ROM and i live in europe
I've got the same problem since about a week, phone randomly turning off. Though never when i'm using it, alsways when the phone is in standby mode, including the strange battery level jumps. I thought it was an app so i did a hard reset, but the turning off remained. I switched from Sense to Launcherpro, still no change.
My phone runs on stock rom, 2.3.4, Sense 3.0, Kernel 2.6.35.13
This weekend i'll backup my SD-card and reformat it, if this helps i'll let you know.

Been there, done that; problem still exists... I have tried a new battery new software (factory reset and hard reset in the repair centre), boardsap, other simcard, other sd card... The problem still is there, I am trying to get a new phone. The problem is the phone ... My question is is this only a normal sensation problem or is this also a problem on the Sensation XE?
My phone is starting to show the same symtons again. Overnight it also has shut down. So i guess the sd format did not get rid of the problem. But on my phone it definitively made it less frequent. As before the format i had it 5 times a day and now i have it once a 2 days. Probably will get worse overtime as the last time i had it.

Let me know if u succeed, i contacted HTC today and they told me to factory reset my phone. Not looking forward to that, do. Might do it next week.
forgot to ask, did HTC give u those out of warranty our did u buy them yourself?
Let me ask you a question. Have any of you polished your covers to chrome? I have had the same issue of my phone turning off in my holster, but only when I have my polished case on it. When I put my spare one that has not been touched, the phone works flawlessly. Not sure if there is some weird static buildup that is shorting the phone. Also, to get it to turn back on, I have to pull the battery first.
I had the same problem on my Sensation, turning off randomly (not reboot). And the battery would display wrong reading once it is back on. Initially I thought this was due to bad rooting or a custom ROM issue, I restored back to stock and right there on the language selection screen on first start and without the SD card, it went off. That made me sure it was a problem something else. I thought then it would be due to bad charges in the battery, used different charger to charge, didn't work, then I replaced the battery, somehow the problem stopped and when I insert back my old battery the problem still didn't come back. I don't have an explanation to this behavior. It works fine now.
That sounds weird, I didn't polish my back to chrome... And I also do not need to pull my battery to turn it back on. A few times I had that it turned of and it would directly turn of again after it was restarted (home screen loaded). The only way to get out of that was to hook it up to the charger.

It's really odd. I can't even use the phone any more.
When I turn it on, as long as the screen stays on it will not turn off.
Once I lock it and put it in my pocket, about 40 seconds later it shuts off. This isn't just powering down, it just instantaneously shuts down. I also can't turn the device back on no matter how many times I press power, I have to physically pull the battery and put it back in to turn it on.
One more thing to add: My girlfriend smacked my phone out of my hand once accidentally and the case doesn't click in. It stays in place but if you hold the case and attempt to take it off it falls off. I'm thinking it could possibly be a problem regarding the pins, but from what I know the pins only control the screen.
Edit: One last thing, when it's connected to my computer and being charged it never shuts down.

I had this same problem two days ago. Left work and my phone just shut off while in my pocket. I was running sense-o-maniac Desense 3.5. It continued this behavior for the next day. Also my battery was showing random charge percentages. There were two issues"
1. I was had used the battery calibrator app from the market to erase my bat stats - problem - it kept erasing my battery stats.
2. I was using set CPU and after reading many dev forums about such issues, I realized that setting the idle below 384 mhz, it causes the phone to random reboot.
Once I conducted a complete wipe and flashed MIUI I was good. no issues.
My Suggestion: Try a complete wipe, then Android Rev HD wipe, then reflash, Wipe cache, Davlick Cache, Fix permissions, then reboot. Drain the battery, then recharge to 100% and wipe bat stats

2nd factory reset and reformatting the microSD did not solve my problem...
@anari101: I'm a big fan of custom roms, but currently my sensation's still running a stock rom. I'd rather not void the guarantee at the moment by flashing it as the phone isn't functioning properly. If i can't fix this problem without flashing a custom rom, i can return it to HTC and hope for a repair or a new device/battery...
Anybody got any other ideas?
i also dont want to root a phone that might have problems.
I did not do any factory reset yet, but the problem is comming back now i have once a day it just shuts down. The last time when i picked it up and pressed the power butten the screen was white for a split second. However if i look at my history of battery monitor widget it stopped recording an houre earlier. clueless to why this happens.
If your phone is rooted, I agree with anari - use current widget and battery calibration to re-calibrate your battery. Let phone charge all the way and then some like another 2 hours. Use battery calibration to get rid of batterystats.bin. Let battery completely drain (Hopefully it doesnt shut off in the process). Definitely seems like something is wrong with your ROM's battery settings.
If you dont have your phone rooted. Have you received any updates lately? If a factory reset didnt help - go to your local Tmobile and just have them ship you a new phone. Not worth dealing with the issue and they can get you a new phone within a couple days.
EDIT: If you have NOT factory reset your phone. You can try to copy all data off your SD card, reformat it. Insert it, let the phone recognize and set it up then add everything back on. If that doesn't work, factory reset (after using Astro to backup all apps). If THAT doesnt work, go get a new phone.
I am having this same problem. Mine always happens when I take my phone out of my pocket after it's been sitting for a while. It also seems that my battery is always around 30-40 percent. It will unlock then just turn off. I turn it back on and after about 30 seconds it turns back off. The only way I can get it to stay on is plugging it in to the charger for a couple of minutes after turning it on and it won't do it again for a while. I don't know what it is but I'm thinking battery or SD card.

Lenovo A1107 Power Down Problems

Hi all, I have a Lenovo A1107 tablet running stock ICS. It began powering down when it reached <50% or so and gradually climbed the % scale to the point where now it is does it at 98% and while plugged in. I have searched for hours and tried few troubleshoots (cleaning up system resources such as apps, home screens etc..., factory reset, airplane mode) but no luck finding a fix.
This problem has become seriously annoying and I just can't seem to narrow down what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks much!
Well, after thinking about it more I realized that the problem seems to be that for some reason or other the system isn't registering the device getting charged, even though the battery indicator says it is charged (90%, 98%, or whatever). The reason it got progressively worse (first starting at @50%, then at 80% and so on) was because even though the battery was getting charged the system was being told that it hadn't. That is why eventually it would power down almost as soon as it turned on, just like it would if the battery were completely dead. The reason I know that is not completely dead and not the battery indicator that is in error is because I could boot into recovery mode and stay in that for well over an hour, despite the fact even that the device will not boot into recovery mode if it is <30% or whatever.
So, I guess the best question would be.......what part of the system communicates between it and the battery? The part that says "no/low power so shut down"?
All moot now as I just took the tablet back and got a different one. Thread closed.

[Q] Atrix 2 takes hours to turn on. Possible problems/solutions?

I have been using my device for about 2 years now and this has been a recent problem. Whenever my phone's battery dies or I manually turn it off, it takes hours(stuck at Motorola boot logo for 2-3 hours or sometimes more) for it to turn back on. It heats up quite a bit while charging, if that helps. I had my device rooted when I was using Gingerbread and used it mainly to take screenshots, but when I updated to ICS, I didn't unroot it and simply updated, this hasn't caused any major problem yet, other than a significant lag at times which I think is unrelated. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try data/factor reset? A factory reset will fix your problem.

Is my phone dead?

Hello, I am using galaxy S3 stock rom and my phone keeps shutting down/rebooting when I am using it. Sometimes I let it charge and 20 minutes later it turns off and I have to try many times to boot it. Many times I let my phone on airplane mode at night at 53% battery and It drains completely. I tried other batteries but still the same thing. Did anyone ever experience this?
Thanks

If you're sure it's not a battery problem, and you've run a battery calibration after backup, factory reset, and restore, just to be completely positive, you might want to see if it is a power button issue. The internals of the button get stuck every so often, and I found that when it was usable, I still got huge battery drain, and sometimes turning off and on by itself. There was a place near me that fixed the button on my S4 mini for $15, worked just like new.
I found that the phone was losing battery when when turned off, try leaving it off overnight and if it drains, it's probably an issue with the button.
If it's just a software problem, then that won't help. What does the OS say is using the battery? Maybe check for wakelocks with a battery saving app, I'm sure someone could recommend something

I had a problem which was similar to this but the phone I got is LYF Flame 7.
My phone was automatically shutting down a few minutes after the device is locked, I investigated every setting to check whether anything like auto shutting down or sleep or something was enabled , but every settings were okay but the problem continued.
When I bought this phone, I was disabled a lot of useless stock apps . I re-enabled all these apps to their default and then the problem is solved.
So you just try reverting your apps to their default,if you have tried to disabled it.
Clear its Cache and Misc
Also try a factory reset and try to boot the phone without any SIM cards and SD card.
In my knowledge , I think , the problem of your phone is software related and hardware is okay.
And keep investigating in S3 threads.

Is my OPO dying?

Hello, everyone.
I'm using an OPO since october 2014 and I had no intention of buying a new phone in the near future. But now I'm worried about it.
Abouth three weeks ago, my phone started to freeze and reboot. At the time I was using sultan's latest ROM. I thought the problem was the latest updates and, as I wanted to test Nougat, I decided to download Lineage.
To my surprise, I kept having random freezes and reboots.
While reflashing ROMs and changing kernels, I had some reboots. Yes, self rebooting while on recovery.
So I decided to get it totally back to stock and re-start fresh.
Phone froze and restarted on COS initial config. And, after that, rebooted again when updating Gmail apps.
During these three weeks, it kept on with no reboots for, at max, around 40 hours.
Is there any way I can test my phone to determine if it's a hardware issue? It all makes me think it is. :/
Any clue is welcome.
Thanx.

Get your device checked at a local shop. Looks to me like a battery or logic board issue. If it's battery then you can get a replacement but if its logic board then yes,you should consider buying new device.

I'm fairly sure that there is no local shop that could check it.
Right now, before checking this thread, I let the battery completely drain and now it's on the wall recharging. I'll enter recovery when it's 100% charged and do a factory reset. Then install everything back and use it for a few hours.
Let's see it that helps.
Thanx for the reply.
- phone battery completely drained
- phone battery completely charged
- booted to recovery and factory reseted
- initial COS configuration done without any freeze and/or reboot
- updating Google Apps
So far, so good.
And it rebooted twice, during apps update.
Although it updated main Google apps, it was not supposed to reboot.
:/
Hmmm...if random reboot but able to boot normally afterwards then you need to tweak the kernel a little bit but if is random reboot and then stuck at 1+ logo or bootanimation then your battery is dying....
to check whether the battery is dying just wait until next reboot...if it stuck on 1+ logo or bootanimation, turn off the phone completely then plug in the charger...it it charge for 5 minutes in offline mode then turn it on while the charger still connected...if its boot normal then it is confirmed that the battery is dying...replace a new battery as quick as possible...
I've been living with random freeze+ automatic reboot since COS13 it's a PITA but doesn't cost me anything to wait 1min until full reboot, only problem are lucky patch on boot which take longer but nothing that bad. I was never able to troubleshot the issue, usually happens to me when I receive some notification I see the LED and try to unlock but the phone stays blacked out (even though it's clearly on since notifications are shown on the LED) until I force reboot.
Over the years I tried insane amount of ROMs and kernels, nothing changed, adding to that the fact that 10% of the times when i put it in charge (original charger+cable) says 7h or 6h until full charge (and I actually have to wait all that time), I just have to unplug and try again until it fixes. It's not the charger because I tried it with other phones, so I started to assume my problems are the small board with the charging board + battery. But I never had the willing to change it. I'm "fine" with how it works.

It does not get stuck. At times, it reboots during boot. Some times (rarely) it does that for two or three times and then turns off. But most of the time it freezes, reboots and I can use it normally for hours and hours.

I'm "almost" fine with the way it works for me. As most of the time it's fully operational.
I found a OPO with damage screen for sale here. He guy didn't want too much $ for it. I bought it and will receive next week. Will try to swap logic boards.
Let's see what happens.
Was able to have logcat running when the device froze (during game) and rebooted.
Is anyone able to see any error on the log that could make the device freeze and reboot?
Got the broken screen OPO two days ago. Yesterday my phone was impossible to be used. Rebooting like hell.
I swapped logic boards and all is fine. No freezes and reboots (of course, it's pratically another phone). I kept only my screen, housing and battery.
My logic board had a 2.5 sticker on it. The one I got now has a 2.1 sticker. Does anyone know what's that about?
