Will no SD Card and no removable battery be a big deal - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want your opinions. I'm looking into buying the S6, but wanting to know how big of an issue it is.

It was to me which is why I purchased a Note 4 today. You should too.

Depends.. have you ever relied on SD and removable battery on a phone? you have to answer your own question

Because of the battery I'll keep my S4 as a backup device for the long hikes or travel situations where a removable battery is very helpful.
The missing micro sd isn't a problem for me - I see more benefits in it. I was never a fan of a "splitted" storage where I've to move things around, hope that developer support it and sometimes having file issues even with big brands like Sandisk cards. Now we have finally 32/64/128gb main storage available and don't longer have to deal with 16GB.
So I'm happy with the change they did to the storage, and for the battery I'll keep my old device as a backup for the 4-5 situations a year where it's helpful.

About the removable battery...
It is not just the fact the battery is not easy to swap out but is going to require a repair center to replace the battery for more people when the time comes. Also, if the phone were to get wet, the battery could not easily be removed while trying to dry it out.
I was set in buying the 6. Now, I think I may settle on the s5 or Note 4 unless the Active 6 brings back some of these features. I have read conflicting information on when the active version will be released.

It could be a deal breaker for me. I'm not a fan of sealed units.

I have the AT&T LG G2, which unlike the international version, did not have expandable storage or replaceable battery.
I thought both would become issues, but they never were.
It's been almost two years since I got the G2, and no issues with having not enough memory. Phone hasn't died on me either.
The 2550mAH battery does worry me though a bit. Ultra-Power Saving mode should solve this issue when needed.

I think there's a Motorola phone coming out that's advertising a 2 day battery. I may just go with that. I can't get LinuxOnAndroid to work on my S5 and the battery kills me. I think if I didn't have knox to worry about and I could make it through the day without charging I'd be very satisfied with just that.

Sony actually I think. Anyway I just read that the Galaxy S6 can get 4hr worth of charge off just 10min charging. That makes life a little better.

Really interested in this phone!

Ok, so I can do the EDGE program and get the M8. I have been reading and reading just about everything here. I am coming from an S3, and before that I had an HTC Rezound which I loved (love the S3 too) I just remember it being a little tricky to get S off on the Rezzy.....paperclip and timer needed. I was never able to do it. I was able to unlock through HTC Dev, but I understand that is not possible for this phone.
I am not all that good with adb etc.I know just enough to get into trouble I have been flashing phones and tablets for years, only one HTC tho (and I really didn't need s off at the time) The 3 samsung phones I have had in the past, Fascinate, Droid Charge and the S3 were fairly simple to root and flash roms.
I guess I'm just a little nervous about the commands and putting the files in the correct folders. One of the main reasons I want this phone is because of the removable memory (hard to come by these days) and the fact that I can still mod my phone. Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!
Root and S-Off Ridiculously easy. Follow the guides, copy/paste adb commands and that's it. There is NO tricky timing issues etc. It's all very straight forward. But I would get one and not piss around before they block the exploit.

The directions for firewater(to get s-off) are pretty straight forward and I think some one had made a video too. Look into it if you are unsure but you should be able to do it.

My take.....Galaxy S3 vs. HTC One M8
Putney, I came from a S3, and I'll give you my take.
The Galaxy 3 is a really great phone with many ways to tweak it. The HTC One M8 is still somewhat new, so you don't see as many tweaks you can do to the HTC as you could the S3. I haven't tried any of the few ROMs that are available for the HTC because I think the stock ROM runs really nice. It's not only smooth, but with the phone's faster processor, you'll notice it moves along faster than the S3. This is not to say these ROMs being developed aren't worth checking out. Obviously with more time, developers will come up with more and more options!
With the new Kit Kat that is installed on the HTC, you will have to install a workaround so you can use an Ext. Card as a storage device, because Kit Kat has enacted safeguards to only allow access to certain programs. I got mine to work, so it is possible to do. Of course you'll have to go through other steps to allow you to "free up' your HTC.
The sound is definitely better on the HTC with two speakers! The screen is bigger and looks great.
A big negative I've found, is the fact you can't access the battery. I liked the fact with the S3, you could change to a bigger battery size so your phone would last longer. My S3, with my new upgraded battery, lasted up to a day and a half. I don't think the HTC can even make it 24hrs. The HTC has a feature that you'll have to patch in yourself, or it comes with the new update, called "Extreme Power Savings Mode" that is supposed to save the battery. I just installed it yesterday, so I haven't used it enough to report on it.
Generally speaking, though, I'm glad that I went to the HTC. It obviously has other great features that I haven't touched on and the reviews I've read have been very positive. Never thought I'd give up my Samsung, but it looks like I made a good choice!
Just my 2 cents!

Thanks so much for your input!! This helps a lot! I will miss the removable battery....but I have chargers EVERYWHERE! I work at a school, there is one taped to my desk It is the same charger as my s3 right? I think they are all micro USB at this point.
When you said there is a workaround to free up the sd card, does that mean that I cant put my pics, videos and music on it?
Thanks again!
After I go to court today to evict a tenant, I will need serious retail therapy (yes I'm a chick) this phone is the therapy I need
Thanks again!!!
I watched ROOTJUNKY's you tube videos for installing weaksauce and firewater, looks pretty straightforward to me. Just need to roll up my sleeves and dive in!
To store pics, videos, and other files to the Ext Card, you WILL have to apply the workaround to your phone for you to do that. You can find it on Play Store. It's called: SD Fix: Kit Kat rewritable.
It requires root, so do all the other things before you install this.

Battery isn't an issue. Took phone off charger at 5:30am and now it's 11:40am and I have 81% battery using Bluetooth, 4g lte connection, etc. This phone easily lasts people over 24hrs without using any battery save mode. Now if u play with it all day well come on, battery will drain slower with all the on screen time and what ur doing, that's any device. If u use this phone as a phone and some YouTube vids, FB, Twitter, tapatalk, some internet surfing, some dead trigger 2 gameplay, this phone will last you from when u woke up til u at least get home at night. It's that good! If you use battery save mode it will lasts longer! Extreme battery save mode haven't tested cud well, haven't needed it.

Any major problems with the S6?

I have the SGS4 and the "Sim Card Removed" error is driving me bonkers. The SGS4 forum tracked it down to a certain serial number range; but I understand a subset of the SGS5 may also suffer from this. Also posting the same question in the SGS5 Q&A forum...
I'm looking at phones on Swappa; hoping for an idea of things to avoid, if possible, if I go with the S6.
Thanks!
From my personal usage, I have no major issues with it. Build quality is great and it has future software updates planned too. Camera is one of the best still out there even with the s7, lg g5 and htc m10 being released. The only thing I would say is that battery life could be a little better, for my own usage it's okay I get just about a days use out of it. But if you're on Facebook all the time and playing games then the battery will need charging before the day is up, I always carry a power bank with me anyway so that's not much of an issue. The other thing if you wasn't aware of is that it does not have a microsd slot, so go for the 64gb version I would say. But all in all I've had the device since last September and I'm happy with it till my contract is up.

Does LG G Flex 2 still worth it in 2016 for $170?

My local online shop sell this phone for only $170 brand new, which is steal for a snapdragon 810 devices(At least in my country). The model is H959 with 32gb storage and 2gb ram i believe. Im upgrading from lumia 1520. Does it worth it? Thanks in advance (Sorry for my bad english)
170$? US Dollars? I would say shut up and take my money!
Even if you have to know that the development is really bad because no Android6root and no bootloaderunlock - for now, and probably forever. Thank you lg!
On top of that, the screen brightness range is a joke.. A bad one. Don't get me wrong, it's sharp and clear but during day it's not THAT Bright and at night it's like looking right into the Sun.
Overheating and lag is gone for me since android6 but root is gone too so... Meh :/
Battery is okay but don't expect too much - but you still can get 2 days if you handle it right.
Camera is still far above average I would say (good at night, ois, laserfocus, even 4k, but ****ty slomo compared to iPhones)
Helpful?
From H955 16gb
Edit: still would buy again though.. It's still best bang for the bucks and literally physically indestructible
No. I had nothing but problems with mine. Regretted buying it so much. I especially hated the battery life, the software and that you can't turn double tap to wake off unless you installed a 3rd party app. If you have to buy it, I'd go for the 3gb ram version. I had the 2gb version and the user experience was miserable.
I replaced mine with a Oneplus 3 and never looked back.

I have to disagree regarding getting the 3GB H950 over the 2GB versions unless you are a AT&T customer, for the following reasons:-
- Even if you are an AT&T customer, the H950 is stuck on 5.1.1. and the battery life sucks.
- If you are not an AT&T customer, the H950 is on 5.0.1 and you can only get it upgraded by having an AT&T sim card in the phone and connected to there network. Take it from me, getting to even 5.1.1 is a nightmare. :crying:
Totally agree though regarding the One Plus 3, the user experience is second to none. :victory:
Buy it if is H955 !!!!! Update to Marshmallow and enjoy it ! Super fast, not overheat more then other LG for example LG3, great camera, great display, great design .
I used before LG Optimus One ( 2 years) Samsung Galaxy S2 ( 3 years) LG G3 (1 year) all rooted using with custom roms, so I know what I am talking about !
H955 its a very good phone only with Marshmallow because let you using other programs , like google phone changing your default dialer , google messaging , so I don't need root for this phone.

And how can we tell if we have 2 gb ram or 3gb ram?

Agreed. It depends on what you need, I guess.
The thing i hated the most about the 2gb version is the apps and tabs reloading in chrome or other web browsers. It reloads every time I leave a tab for more than 20 seconds. I have to use this secure website for work and would have to log back in every time the website reloads. So i would be on this website, pulling some information off it to send a text to my client, go back for additional information, and it would force me to log in again and search the database again. Rinse and repeat about 20 times a day. I think the lack of ram and the ram management was responsible for it. I would have never expected that from a 2015 flagship-ish phone.

I feel you. I used to have these sorts of issues on the Nexus 9. Things improved when I switched to Habit Browser as that seemed to be less RAM intensive than bloated Chrome. There were also some custom roms on the Nexus 9 which would employ zRAM to effectively buy another 0.5GB. Maybe something you could look at? I also went for the H950 for the Mrs due to being concerned that 2GB wasn't enough on the other versions. Its starting to feel like you cant win either way with the GF2. :crying:

Hi I am considering getting a Flex 2. I went from considering ordering a H950 At&t variant from abroad because of the extra storage and RAM. However after seeing that it will probably never get marshmallow and probably has more bloatware on it than other versions, I am thinking that even the weaker H955 might work better with Marshmallow since it should be a lot more optimized for the SD810 SOC and maybe better RAM management too. I would appreciate if you could give your opinion on some things:
- What is the bloatware situation on the Flex 2 Marshmallow ROM out of the box?
- Have you seen an increase in speed on everyday use( compared to 5.1.1/11)? Such as opening apps and multitasking.
- Have you seen a decrease in heating and throttling issues?
-Have you seen an increase in battery life?
- Have you tried any low or high end gaming? If so what is the performance like on Marshmallow?
- Has the minimum brightness issue been fixed?
- Have you tried different launchers to see if there has been an improvement in performance?
Many thanks

Yes

Yes

Same, my record is more then 120 Hours but if you use intense you drain the battery more quickly.

Generally speaking the reviews and users report that at min brightness it was way too bright so for viewing in the darkness it is just too hard on the eyes.

confused

Hi all,
I'm confused and very hesitant about upgrading , I have a note 4 and like I said I'm very hesitant and reluctant to upgrade because I don't want to be a slave to a charger.....this is the number one reasons I hate Iphones besides not being able to expand the memory you can't switch out the battery, and you become as I stated a slave to a charger. Also I want to know if you are rooted & running the latest software does it make a difference what device you have? I know a friend of mine who has an s6 and I know one who has a note 5&6 their constantly charging it because the battery is constantly dying. can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to a note 5 if I cant expand the memory?
Can anyone tell me weather I'm doing the right thing, Or can anyone tell me anything to rest aside my fears concerning upgrading. ......thanks

How did you root it w/o being able to take off the back or taking out the battery especially if it overheats ?

Well, I was trying to help. Perhaps a better choice would be a Samsung Jitterbug.
The Note5 is an amazing phone. I wish there weren't as many variants around the world, so that the development was consolidated, though...
Anyway! You don't need to take out the battery to root. You cannot access the battery with this phone. If it overheats, and I don't think mine ever has, it will just shut off (theoretically), or you can hold down power, home, and down volume buttons to reboot it.
If you wait a few weeks, the market will be flooded with used Note5's, so you might be able to pick one up for cheap.
Just wait until the Note 8

Question 4G vs 5G power consumption

Is there any noticable power consumption difference between using 4G vs 5G?
Oh yes, nothing's for free.
Depends somewhat on usage.

5G takes more power as it has weak signal and constantly switching between 4G\5G. If your cell tower nearby you good to stay on 5G all the time.
5G for me is just marketing things to sell updated smartphones, 112mbps on 4G LTE is more that enough for everything
That makes sense. Central London is good but where i live there is no 5G. I believe it is at least once in a while trying to look for 5G. And worse if the signal is weak and it keeps switching between 4g and 5g.
I heard that the 5g for s22 is optimised as in its a bit slower but uses less power than previous gen

The newer flagships are a mess. No SD card slot, spen on left side, but it's not just these obvious blunders.
Variable refresh rate displays consume more power and have looser color calibration than fixed rate. Failure rates are high and more issues.
Android 11 and especially 12 are fubar. CPU cycle sucking scoped storage degrades performance, battery life and user/app functionality. It sucks, literally.
The limited storage means just like Apple even if can find the pricey 500gb, that's it. Peasants are only allotted a certain amount of real storage, go eat cloud. Some shipping out at 128gb are sick jokes. One SD card slot and a $75 V30 512gb Sandisk extreme card use to able fix that.
No power user flagships because peasants can't be power users.
108mp cam hype crap instead of solid tangible cam improvements. Let make it thicker and heavier too. This the same company that made to N10+? How did they learn to fail so quickly? Idiots.
Because of these reasons, and the fact that the Note 10+ is a snappy fast phone that's fun to use, I blew off 3 generations of new flagship phones.
Bought a second new 4G Note 10+ about 5 months ago running on Android 10. The one in my hand is running on Pie. Current OS load will be 2 yo in June, still fast, stable with minimal maintenance. One battery replacement, display is perfect... it runs, looks and feels like the new one even after heavy usage for 2.5 years.
Usability and functionality are more important than new hardware, technology and firmware. Especially when the newer versions/technologies are poorly implemented or still need more improvement.
Bottom line; forget the endless sales hype and buy what suits your needs best.
Go into the stores and test out the display models

No
Got 2 good runnin' N10+s, a cheap grandfathered unlimited data 4G plan and I just don't care.
Next upgrade is a 1tb V30 SD card.

We all know you think your Note 10 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, it's all we ever hear from you. Enjoy 2019, most of us have moved on.
I have found no difference in battery behavior between 4g and 5g in my dual sim device. I only get 4g on one and get 5g on the other. Same (poor) battery life. For me anyway.
True. I'd rather have more slower but more efficient CPU and GPU if it means longer lasting battery. In fact SD gen 1 and Exynos 2200 are less efficient than 2-3 gen old CPUs, which doesn't not make sense to me.
To be fair Samsung has done a good job with thermal management. I like the fact that phone never gets that hot.

The newer flagships are a mess. No SD card slot, spen on left side, but it's not just these obvious blunders.

Never count on SmartSwitch for critical data backup. It may or may not work.
Hand copy/paste, then verify copied files are complete and readable.
Use at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC to redundantly backup all critical data.

Are you saying literally just manually select all and copy onto desktop? If I were to factory reset my phone, if i simply move all the files back to my phone from PC it will "restore" it perfectly?
Everytime I sit the setting to be only 4g , something changes it back to 5g

I always set up dual drive PCs including the phone if I have an SD card.
In that case I more or less just copy the SD card folder by folder. You may want to a sync folder for large folders like music and photos.
For a single drive backup is similar. Break out/tag folders that need to be backed up.
Keep these well organized.
Vet files before transferring them to the above folders from the Download folder. The Download folder does not get saved; files are either vetted and transferred to their appropriate folder or discarded. The Download folder is a safeguard to help isolate infected files from the database.
You need to work out a system of folder organization for your data. Best if the folders and data on the phone correspond to the ones in use on the PC. You need to put some thought into it
Back up any apps that allow data backup like Poweramp, contacts, bookmarks, etc. These must be backed up on SD card (if present) and the backup hdds, etc or they will be lost with a crash. Make sure all passwords are somehow backed up.
