Unless I stand next to an open window I have to revert to 3G.
Is there anything I can do to improve 4G reception?

Sort of a signal repeater/whatever, no.
How about software wise (outside of standard settings)? Sometimes it seems "stuck" at 3G, once I force 'LTE only' 4G becomes available. Can I make 4G more preferential?

You can't make it get better reception.
Forcing LTE only is a bad idea, as a better 3G signal will use much, much less battery than a terrible LTE signal. This is why devices also still have 2G radios; if 4G is not available/weak, it will switch to 3G. If 3G is not available/weak, it will switch to 2G.

Im going to get the inspire this week but i live in latinamerica, in here we dont the so called "4g" damn we barely have 3g so i was thinking this is going to have a HUGE impact in the already crappy battery life , is there a way to turn off the 4g and just saty in 3g/2g without having to install cm7?
The 3G and 4g are the same. AT&T calls it's hspa network 4g, although else ware it's referred to as 3G. In fact, even at&t called it 3G until recently.
To answer your question, you just have 2 settings. Hspa and edge. So it's 3G/4g or 2g.

i remember i read somewhere that the evo 4g had an option for switching between 4g and 3g, the 3g from sprint is different? im confused with this stupid marketing move of the so called 4g, and verizon's 4g is just marketing too?
In latin america im gonna get a 4g icon on my phone when im actually just getting 3g? or the 4g sign will appear when it's suppossed to be displaying the ”h” icon , which is the one im getting with my milestone right now
Yep, the evo has two radios. One is cdma and the other is wimax.
The inspire will also display an H. Actually H+.

If you want to just stick to 2G, you can download Extended Controls from the market and put a 2G/3G toggle on your homescreen. Sticking to 2G will increase your battery life, too.

no, i dont wanna stick to just 2g, so the radios for 3g and 3g are different? when i get 3.5 g the notification bar is gonna display a "H" or its gonna appear as a "H+"
On The HTC Inspire the H+ icon well display for both 3G and HSPA+. So you will not no when your on HSPA+ unless you go to Settings and click on About Phone and then click on Network, and under Mobile Network Type it will say either: HSPDA (3.5g) or HSPA+ (I'm assuming).
I desperately need a solution to this as well.
At work the 3G signal is very crappy and the constant searching and switching all but kills my battery in less than 8 hours. I also get missed calls.
The custom ROM I had in my previous phone (Tilt 2) had the 3G Toggle and it worked beautifully... my battery lasted for 2 days.
*#*#4636#*#* doesn't make the GSM selection stick.
I tried several apps from the market and they only take me to settings and there is nothing there to change to force the phone into constant Edge.

Try using CM7. It does have the functional use 2G(EDGE) only.
Any tips on disabling HSDPA on the stock Rom? I know the Galaxy S and S2 have a simple dial code menu to do this, however an easy way on the Nexus S still eludes me.
Thanks in advance.
Why not just tick the "Use 2G only" in wireless settings?

No, I want to use 3G, just not HSDPA+
I'm dying to know why.

There appears to be an issue with Samsung GS2 and Nexus S and my ISP, see: http://community.vodafone.com.au/t5...Galaxy-S-II-Internet-Problems/m-p/24265#M1553
I suspect the issue has to do with this "lock/test/switch" to hsdpa, and I would like to test that theory out

Nexus S doesn't have HSPA+...
You are right, disregard that +
I'm also interested in finding a way to disable HSPA on my Nexus S. For anyone who's interested in knowing why, it's because of a long-standing, infuriating and utterly ridiculous Android bug that supposedly leads to the watchdog service to think that the PDP context has gone down, causing it to ask for a new one. Naturally, the 3G network doesn't allow it, and all hell breaks loose.
How they manage to miss crap like this, I'll never know. The Android kernel source code in question even has a comment in it identifying it as a kludge.

I think that's only partially true. NS caps at 7.2mb's while a myTouch 4G caps at 11.something. Anyways, they both still use the same HSPA+ network. My friends NS gets about 4-5mb's down, which is about the same that I get on my myTouch 4G in Los Angeles.
So I think the NS still gets HSPA+, it's just capped lower than TMO's 4G phones that's all.

the ns gets hspa not hspa+. it uses the hspa+ network, but is still hspa.
No offence, but how is any of this related to the issue at hand?
I think you have to disable the data connection altogether or go back to 2G
Unfortunately that's not an option. I still need a data connection, but my carrier has extremely poor 2G coverage in my area. I've read that it is possible to modify the build.prop file to disable HSPA while leaving 3G active, but as I understand it this requires your phone to be rooted. Can anyone clarify on this?

hspa is 3G
Have we not already had this debate? 3G is WCDMA, which is not HSPA. HSPA is 3.5G.
Hey is there a way to switch between using 3G and 4G? I know there is a use only 2G networks option but what about 3G/4G? Thanks
I don't think so...
To my understanding, T-Mobile uses the same network technology for both 3G and 4G (HSPA+) so turning off 4G would also turn off 3G. And if that isn't the case, it still wouldn't make sense to turn it off. It's only affect would be slower internet speeds. I could be wrong here though, lets see what the other posts say.

I think you're right BioRivit. Unlike the switch between 2G and 3G, which involved totally different frequencies and underlying technology, 4G is basically the same technology as 3G, except with a few modifications that allow a faster speed.

Ok thanks guys. I guess my real question was supppsed to be how do you tell if you are on tmobile's 3G or "4G". I feel like I've never seen a 3G icon in the status bar, only 4G. Thoughts?
T-Mobile uses the 3g network to transmit 4g. Unlike Verizon or Sprint which have a structural difference between 3g and 4g, T-Mobile is using the 3g network with data compression. This is how they expanded from 3g to 4g instantly, no change in network structure. You won't see 3g again if you have a 4g phone like the G2x. You can only use Edge (2g) or 4g. Hope that helps.
Alright thanks guys
Hi everyone,
I was looking around and I read that the Nexus is suppose to fallback to HSPA when the LTE signal is weak or non-existent.
I was curious as to when the phone actually considers the LTE signal weak. In my room, I only get 1 bar on LTE (~115 dBm), sometimes losing the signal completely, however I have never actually seen it fallback to HSPA.
So my question is, when does the phone automatically switch from LTE to HSPA?
Thanks in advance!
Current setting on my phone:
LTE (Recommended) is selected as the "Preferred network type"
[LTE/GSM auto (PRL) in the hidden menu]
Yes it will automatically switch when you not in a LTE area.. Its not based on signal strength.. Its based on your area and the area without Lte must have hspa to work or it will switch to 3g or Edge if hspa is unavailable...

As in previous reply, it only falls back if there is no signal. Sometimes signals are weak and connection drop. Your phone tries to connect back to LTE. Since LTE signals are still in the air, it wouldn't switch to HSPA. If you think you will benefit from HSPA compared to LTE, you can manually change it.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply.
I guess now my question is, how long will the phone wait before it gives up on looking for a LTE signal and switch to HSPA?
I initially thought that the phone would fall back to HSPA if the LTE signal is too weak.
Thanks in advance!
The 4G service at work between 8:30am to 5:30pm is literally unusable. I have 3 bars but as soon as everyone shows up, the data literally slows to a trickle. This wasn't always the case and I'd like to test the modem in 3G mode. My theory is that the 4G uplink is saturated but possibly not the 3G pipe. I don't believe the software provides this functionality to the user normally but since my device is rooted, is there a way to temporarily tell the modem to switch to 3G? I'm proficient in linux/unix and comfortable in a shell environment so a solution along those lines is fine for now.
Running android 4.4.2 w/ baseband i535OYUDNE1 (most recent OTA update from verizon), towelroot and supersu.

Thanks for the suggestion. I iterated through all of the options under "preferred network type" e.g. WDMA, CDMA, EVDO, GSM, etc. Changing the mode would remove the LTE symbol from the phone (and disable data) but I could never get the 3G symbol to show up. Is there another option I might be missing?
That's odd. I'm on 4.3TW and the CDMA (prl) option works.
Are you sure 3g data is present at your location.?

I can remember having 3g at one time here but I'll wait to answer that until I get home where I frequently get dropped to 3g.
But, I noticed something interesting in looking at the power metrics. As I said I have 3 signal strength bars and the 4G LTE symbol. But this app says I have -61 db(71%) LTE RSSI signal and 2db(44%) LTE SNR. Doing some google searches I found a verizon document that says that RSSI should be greater than -58db and SNR should be greater than 12.5db for LTE to work correctly on their network. So that would seem to indicate why my data performance is bad and not necessarily a saturated uplink to the tower. So, is the signal strength meter actual reporting CDMA (voice) RSSI?

hah, and now I'm at work and realized, my work phone is 3G (verizon) only and its got 5 bars. Any ideas what's going on?
