[Q] Custom Kernels - Noob Question - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Been messing around with several ROMS over the last week or so and the latest CM12 Nightly is actually doing really well for the most part. Most everything works just fine except the WiFi takes a little bit before connecting, and battery life is just okay. That being said, I was wanting to check into some custom kernels that might help with battery and such. But I don't know much about them, and their compatibility. Are the just device specific? Or also ROM specific? Can someone help guide me to some good kernels that will work with CM12 to start with?

That kernel should work on CM12. If I was running AOSP I'd probably be running that kernel. There really aren't a whole lot of AOSP kernels out there on account of the popularity of Sense 6, Sense 7, and GPe. That situation generally improves with time.

[Q] When can new roms be used?

I am a jailbroken iPhone convert. I am loving this phone so far and have heeded the warnings to not mess with the phone too much. My question is, when is it safe to use the roms that are available? Is there that big of a difference in performance? I jailbroke my iPhone to get features Apple wouldn't allow our have. what do I gain with custom roms? Thanks for all that has been done so far and look forward to what its to come.
I don't know of there is a time period to use them but most custom roms freshen up your desktop icons as well most of them improve battery life and add the ability to overclock.
You can gain quite a few features with Custom Roms. Such as overclocking, custom ui's, much better performance (snappier). I highly recommend flashing a custom ROM. Currently CM9 and CM7 are a work in progress and should be released sooner than later, (CM7 is currently in it's testing stage). Also to do all of this you have to root your device. A guide can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327741&highlight=how+to+root Keep in mind many features can be gained once rooted, but as you probably know the warranty is voided.
Thanks for the help so far. The only question still remaining for me is; at what point are these roms considered stable enough for someone new to start using. I have read the warnings and really don't want to have to reinstall everything over and over again because of instability issues. thanks

It really all depends on what you are after.
I will say that even the stock ROM on the Atrix 2 is not that stable, and there are a TON of bugs in it.
All the ROMs that are here are in a beta format and are not even at a 1.0 revision yet. If you are not technical at all, and don't really like playing with your device a lot, and flashing ROMs, to try and get a feature that the stock ROM is missing, then I totally advise against flashing anything. These "ROMS are completely safe and stable enough", but both lfaber06 and are I always trying to "improve" on them, no matter what revision that the ROM is at, as well as requests for new features. That really is why it may seem that people are flashing all the time, not really because of instability.
Since he and I are really the only two devs in here right now, there is not going to be a lot of choice in ROMs and since this phone is still fairly new, everything is still "new" and in beta/alpha. Since you are coming from the iphone, and flashing ROMs is not really something that you do, I say you wait until you find something you really want that is not available in the stock ROM, and has been put into one the ROMs available here, then try flashing that. Until then just hang tight for a while. There are plenty of hacks that can be done to the stock ROM, to fix things, and make that better at this time. Also take some time to learn a little about android and flashing and how it all works, not intimately, or on a very technical level, but that might save your "you know what", if you have an issue during a flash or while running an unfamiliar ROM.
Thank you VERY much. That was the answer I was looking for. I am technical savy, just haven't done much with android so far. I am one that likes to tinker and get the most out of any of my electronics.

[Q] New to the phone, have some questions.

First off, I am interested in a vanilla ROM that is stable--what is the best currently available for this phone? CM, AOKP, PA, etc. I would prefer Jelly Bean, but if ICS is more stable, I will definitely take that.
Here is what I need to be working:
GPS
Simultaneous Voice + 3G
Video
Camera
Wifi Tethering
Heavy Customization
Decent Battery Life
NFC
Now, given the ROM you recommend, what are some kernels recommended for that ROM? Again, I'm looking for the ROM to be smooth, but would sacrifice a little performance for better battery life.
I plan on purchasing a used (a week old) one from someone off of Craig's List tomorrow (we are meeting at a Verizon store)--is there anything I should specifically be checking before I decide on a final purchase for the phone?
Thanks ahead of time for any advice anyone may have!
Ninja-edit: I obviously plan on rooting this, and by the looks of it, if it received an OTA, I can't unlock the bootloader? Will this affect my ability to root and flash custom ROMs at all?
you should get your phone and flash a few touchwiz roms, and a few AOPS roms and decide what you want. a nice compromise is beans build. i guess its themed after AOSP but ive never flashed it. theyre different experiences. ive had good luck with KTkernel but others run other kernels. never tried any others.
youll get many recommendations here both TW and AOSP, because basically any rom you flash will have all of those features working. (unsure about simultanous voice + data but i think thats on all?)
dont mean to give such a blehhhhhh answer, but only you can decide on what you run

I'm really not a fan of Touchwiz at all. Do you have a specific AOSP ROM that you'd recommend?
running AOKP M1 with the 11/13 ktkernel. i keep trying others but always come back to AOKP. its just great for me and everything I use works.
I ran paranoid android for a month or so without any issues too. ive had great luck with the AOSP roms for the S3.
if those interest you...king kang is a combination of AOKP and ParanoidAndroid. I flashed and went back to AOKPM1 though.
Thanks for the reply! I'll give AOKP a shot and report back here with how it works!

[Q] Help me choose a ROM please

Hi,
so I have had a rooted phone for a while now, but I'm starting to get tired of the stock ROM so I thought I'd try something different. I've spent a couple of hours looking through these forums and I can't see the difference between the different cyanogenmod implementations, i.e. skrilax, dhacker and epinter all seem to have slightly different versions? Anyway, I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a good ROM to use for a long period of time, say a month or so, without crashing *much*. I need bluetooth and camcorder working too, these also seem to be issues with some of them.
Alternatively, links some posts that help me better get my bearings on what's what would be well appreciated
Thanks
If you go with CyanogenMod, I would recommend using skrilax's builds since they are released every night and it works with the CM updater built into the ROM.
Camcorder works fine and Bluetooth is mostly OK, but I sometimes get random reboots while using Bluetooth headphones. Not sure if it's still a known issue or just some weird thing with my setup.
Also, your location says Melbourne, so I'm assuming you have the xt925? That might factor into some people's answers a little bit.

spot on
Anyway, thanks for the reply, but I was about to flash skrilax's ROM when I realised you said IF I choose cyanogenmod... is there a better alternative? I'd like something that's fast (unlike the stock rom is now -.-) and doesn't kill the battery, and some new features to play around with would be nice.
It really all depends on what you want. Some other ROMs like Paranoid Android, MIUI, AOKP, etc have more features than CM, but CM has always been rock solid from my experience (this phone and my previous one).
Doesn't hurt to experiment a little, either, as long as you keep nandroid backups handy.
I haven't heard any reports of significant increases in battery life on custom roms. I wonder if this is the case?
I actually would like to know what the longest screen on time and or standby time a person achieved with underclocking / undervolting etc.

Fastest yet stable rom - T959V?

My friend wanted me to help him flash a custom rom on his phone. It is currently running stock Touchwiz and is extremely slow.
I don't really have time to test all the different roms on the Android Development board, because I need to give him his phone back in a few days, so I would like to ask which Rom is the fastest yet most stable.

There are many great ROMs which are both fast and stable. What version OS are you wanting, and can your friend live without the use of GPS? Aries Kernel based ROMs are the quickest, however, the SGS4G has an issue with GPS at the moment, which folks are working on. Personally, for fast, solid, and sufficient battery life, I like AOKP 4.0.2 ICS, however, it all depends on how the phone is used. The Devs here have built up to and including 4.3, but pretty sure most if not all over 4.0.2 are Aries based, so they have the GPS issue.
I'm on multilang slim ICS. Stable, light, fast with GPS working.
Try it. See my signature.

Does this phone just hate custom ROMs?

I don't see many options here. Mostly stock roms in this forum topic. I had a ton of problems with boot loops and such and just couldn't get anything to work. OTAs still force a bootloop sequence unless I zero out: "/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc". I just disabled the notification for them and everything is fine now, but I was wondering if there was any point to using anything other than the stock ROM.
I kept root and just removed TMO bloatware. The 4.4.2 stock ROM seems pretty damn fast, but I have nothing to compare it too. I'm basically just trying to decide if it's even worth it to attempt another ROM install. Are there any real advantages to any of the other ROMs out there over stock? I'm looking for stability above all else, then speed. Features I don't really care about.

Stock or at least stock based with dorimanx kernel is about as good as it gets for tmo...most of our developers have moved on to newer devices...and non tmo roms don't have Wi-Fi calling

yeah wifi calling is irrelevant to me, but frankly this stock ROM is amazing compared to the performance of my Relay 4G.... H/W keyboard android phones RIP.
Cheers
I have the Intl version which sports more custom roms but they are all the same more or less.... im on stock KK too even though i was a die hard software updater (had 5.1.1 on previous Nexus 4).
Have to agree with you this phone hates modding and is really feeble, it will get bricked quite easy unlike the Nexus 4 which can take a lot of abuse
Try the new cloudy rom. It's a port from LG G4 with various elements.
why dont you guys check in the G2 Android Development. most roms cover all variants there.
For me CynaogenMod's Privacy Guard feature is a must-have on any Android phone. But right now I'm finding that the official CM12 nightlies seems to screw up the modem settings for my local carrier here in Canda (Wind), so I lose access to the service. Constructive suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
