[Q] Lollipop 5.1 OTA for the S6: How long? 6 months? 8 months? What do you think? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
How long do you think Samsung will take with rolling out the Lollipop 5.1 OTA? How many months?
They haven't even acknowledged it yet.

This is so idiotic. I'm willing to bet we get it by Summer (June 21st).

I really hope Samsung unbundles its apps from Touchwiz and release them to the Play Store. That in my opinion can speed up their OS updates.

Nevermind just enjoying the phone's features. Let's obsess over updates on a phone that hasn't been released yet.

Note 3 kitkat update thread

I hope that this doesn't contravene any rules (forgive me if so), but I thought it would be a chance to discuss official n3 kitkat news, information on what the next TW enhancements may be, if any, release dates, ROM leaks and anything that we are hoping for.
Honestly I can't imagine the phone running faster or smoother in the OS, but ART is an interesting feature, hopefully finally YouTube opens instantly with that...
There isn't much info online about a kit kat update as yet, however the few rumours that there are point to a January/February release.

I don't believe we'll see a kitkat update before s5
Guess the Note 3 will be updated directly to android 5 this time next year.
What makes you say they? Last year s3 got jelly bean after 3 months... The n3 is their current flagship device, there'd be stupid to leave it on an older system for a year with no updates...

Note 3 will get KitKat no doubt. Especially since they're pitching it in combo with their wearable devices. I personally expect it sometime at the end of Q1 in 2014
If s5 is to come with kitkat, then we will get after that so probably 6 months or so.

Raw speculation is utterly useless, the update will come when it comes. Right now, only ONE non-nexus device has received Kitkat and that was a more or less stock Motorola Device (keep in mind Motorola is now a Google owned company). Even Cyanogen isn't ready to push out their Kitkat builds for most devices.
...not to mention that, for example, here in Italy we've not yet received even the MJ7..., ...so to speak...

S5 looking like it will be the new Flagship if Samsung really does the Eye Scanner
http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2013/11/20/samsung-galaxy-s5-eye-scanner-further-evidence/
My guess is early next year. I'm not too fussed as I have a Nexs 5 running KitKat
The Note 2 is just now getting 4.3... I doubt the Note 3 is getting KitKat anytime soon.

hopefully they will release it very soooonnn..
Im sure that Note 3 will get android v4.4 KitKat Soon~
Hopefuly it will come before xmas :victory:
I think February is a good time to hope for, 3 months, like the first main updates for a new galaxy flagship tend to be.

I'd risk a Febuary date for release also, but if we are to believe sammobile and Samsung are testing KK, they may surprise us intime for Christmas! one can only hope
Kitkat will only come once samsung have been able to add their Mods and features to it.... and it's working properly. ... so if they are testing it already. .. Just a matter of time before they get it sorted. I don't think they'll wait for the s5 if everything is running properly. ... afterall.... The note 3 consumers are not the same as the s series consumers so pointless to hold of took s5 is ready. ... Just my thoughts. ..

January is my bet
I am currently running a hacked together KitKat on my Note 3 with little issue. Grab a pack of KitKat apk, design and system files and overwrite the system resources with them and you're up and going with a Touchwiz / KitKat hybrid. I used the W03 KitKat Experience pack and flashed that.

Guess on how long it will take for a 5.0 rom once AOSP is released?

This is obviously a difficult question to answer since it's all speculation but I am needing to decide between sticking with my Nexus 5 and getting the Android 5.0 update on November 3rd or ordering the OnePlus One that I preordered on Monday. I think 5.0 is kind of a game changer and I don't want to be rocking 4.4.4 until possibly February waiting for Cyanogenmod to push out 5.0.
So what I'm wondering is about how long it is expected to take for a decent 5.0 rom for the One to come out once AOSP drops? I have had Nexus phones since the Galaxy Nexus so I'm not used to having to think about these kinds of things, haha.

Official CM11S confirmed to be released 90 days after release. I don't know the first CM nightlies, which may be unusable because of bugs will maybe start 1.5 or 2 months after release. AOSP port should be there noticeably sooner Maybe we'll even see the dev preview ported before the release
5-6 days for the nightlies for the first alpha versions.
It's kinda like asking how long a piece of string is. Nobody can answer this question for sure.

Within 3 months of release for 11S but for sources who knows they will need all the updated drivers etc from the manufacturers and such.
Thanks guys, I somehow forgot about CM alpha builds, nightlies, etc. It's been a while since I was a CM flash-a-holic I guess, haha. I'm totally fine with flashing somewhat unstable builds though, so I went ahead and pre-ordered the One. Now I have a 4-6 week wait anyway so maybe we'll have a usable 5.0 build by then.

android 5.0 is going to be last major update!

We all know that most android phone get supported for 18 month thats a year and a half making your devices almost getting to major updates , so our note 3 original came with 4.3 jellybean and receive (update 1) which is 4.4.2 kit-kat and will receive (update 2) which is 5.0 lollipop am talking about touchwiz am sure there will be newer rom but aosp based stock , we all saw early build of lollipop update in (note 3 9005) and seems also the exynos version may get it also ,
so this thread is about answering these questions?
do you think that samsung may keep supporting our note 3 after 5.0 lollipop released ?
are there going to be developers that can port next touchwiz android which is 6.0 or android m or newer than that ?
what do you feel about knowing that your device never supported ?
Most likely not. They're in the business to sell hardware not keep old hardware running.
I'm sure but by time 6.0, M or whatever comes out the Note 5 or 6 will most likely be out.
Doesn't matter. Technology advances, but when I had the original galaxy there were roms with the latest OS. from devs. It all goes back to...Samsung is in the business to sell hardware not OS updates.
Even if they do, by the time a new Android is released, I'll most likely have bought a new phone.
It will continue to get small upgrades, but it will not get any more major ones.
This is nothing new.
As long as there aosp roms i'm happy
touchwiz are the best

i prefer touchwiz based
What is bothering you so much? even it hasnt received 5.0 and who can tell what will be the next.
Samsung cant even answer your question bcoz this is ridiculous.
What can you do if 5.0 is the last update for Note 3?
This is wasting time.

1-what bothering me is that maybe newer features supported by a new version of android our note 3 not supported yet and i know we will never get that features ported to our note 3 so will be developers who can port a full android version like s3 which get kit-kat ported to international i9300 custom based rom.
2-i just try to guess maybe newer android is going to be android m or what ever will be
3-i don't care about there answer nor i asking them i ask developers here and owners of note 3 like me
4-emmm i will just stick to 5.0 and when new os came and my note never supported i think i will just came hear to see if they can do something like s3 done
Note 3 still kicks butt. I'll look forward to 5.0.
actually

How many rom update per year ?

Thinking of buying the Mate 10/10pro non-China version. However would like to know how frequent are the updates the international versions receive. So how many rom updates did you Mate 9 users receive in one year ? State your country as well as it might vary by region.
Don't expect much if updates are your priority then don't buy this phone. Buy google or oneplus. If you want stable ios like experience with all the perks of android go ahead and buy the mate.
I'm from the Netherlands and have had about 5 to 6 updates this year.
Doesn't bother me that much really, it's a rock solid and stable phone anyways.
Oreo incoming soon.
Yeah that's about right, 5 or 6 in the last 11 months for the C432.
There's been 15 updates since 2016-11-23 for MHA-L29C432... Not all have been pushed to everyone though.
If you are buying a phone, under the pretense of updates, stick with the Apple iPhone, or the Google Nexus/Pixel phones.
Most other manufacturers do not provide timely updates.
I've had 3 Huawei phones. The Mate 2, 8 and now the 9 which I picked up about a month ago. I keep coming back to
Huawei for a couple reasons. The BATTERY SIZE, the value, and how stable they are. Even with the SD400 processor
and 720p screen of the Mate2, coupled with the Nova Launcher, the phone was VERY stable, snappy and performed well.
My 2, came with Jelly Bean, they pretty much skipped KitKat, and went to Lollipop, and had they not given the ability to
easily switch back, I probably would have skipped Lollipop. My 8 came with Marshmelow, and did not receive Nougat 7
until April of 2017, but 6 was very stable.
What I'm trying to say is unless you just got to have the latest version of OS, or, require the frequent security patches,
the stock OS, at least for my use, has been VERY stable, that I have not even bothered to unlock or root my phones.
What little bloat, and, there hasn't been much, was easy to either uninstall, or block.
They are good solid phones, very well made, and for me a great value.

Add Sony to this list.
I bought Sony Xperia XZ (F8332) to my wife at same time when I bought Mate 9.
I noticed that Sony released following updates on to XZ:
Android 6.0.1 - 2 updates
Android 7.0 - 5 updates
Android 7.1.1 - 7 updates
Now we are waiting for Android 8 and XZ has big chances to this update.
In the past we had other Sony phone - Xperia ZL. And it got 3 major versions of Android.
I'm very excited how Sony does update cycle!

Samsung out with Oreo before Essential?

I am shocked by Samsung's release of Oreo beta before Essential. I was under the impression that Essential woild be releasing Android updates soon after Google released them.
Any news on Oreo update for Essential?
well the S8 and S8+ are 8 months old phones. Essential was released 2 months ago so...

I was actually thinking the exact same thing. I can understand Essential does not want to rush out an update which is barely usable, but at least a very rough estimate would be highly appreciated. "Soon" is not an actual timeframe.
Actually, Oreo hasn't been released for the S8 and S8+. It's only a beta test program, limited to 7500 users (about 0.1% of total devices) world wide. In the US, one has to be on TMO or Sprint or have a carrier unlocked device (purchased directly from Samsung) to sign up.
I expect that Essential will release the full production version of Oreo before Samsung (expected early next year, based on past experience).
