I'm curious to know is the 3G HSPA 2100/1700 frequency hardware based or software?
For example can one change the frequency to point say at 850MHz?
I'm currently with Rogers, and their 3G network is not on the same band.

Nah, its a hardware restriction. Tmobile did this because 2100-1700 are dedicated 3G pipelines. They device does not have 850 or 1900 wcdma only 21-1700

i dont know much about phones....or the various cellphone network types.
But isn't a frequency a frequency? Wouldn't it be the softwares job to interpret the data on the various frequencies?

True, software could interprete the singnal, it just wouldn't be as efficient.
The easiest comparison I could make would be video enconding on a PC. You can have your PC encode a video in h.264 it will just take a while. Meanwhile your HD-DVR is doing the same thing in real time. The difference is the dedicated chip in the HD-DVR that only does h.264 encoding.
I have no idea if there's a way to get the raw signal from one of the other radios, let alone if there's enough power in the G1 to interpret it without the chip. I'd guess not on both cases.

Nice comparison... but I think it is more like a wireless router. A 802.11b router can't use 802.11g... why not they run on the same frequency? Because it isn't just the frequency you have to look at. G takes a different amount of power than B. Same with the different bands. 2100 take a different amount than 850.
If you really want to see a comparison wiki radio frequencies and you will see why cb radios and those little walkie talkies don't work on all frequencies too. There is a lot more to it than just telling the radio to go up or down a couple numbers.

But it looks like you answered two questions with that post... someone else was looking for pics of the phones insides. Good job finding those.
Its all hardware based and will not work on at&t 3G. The phone does not have the hardware to pick up 850/1900mhz frequency. Tmobile did this not to screw people over but because they have no need to. The phone was made for T-mobile there is no reason to support at&t bands.
Just like everyone said, it is a hardware thing. As far as I know, since T-Mobile got the short straw and got the 1700MHz band, there really isn't a "universal" phone now that can operate on all GSM and all 3G frequencies worldwide yet. Manufacturers would have to have like 9 total bands supported and with the trend towards smaller and smaller phones, it's something that gets cut early. So the short of it is this: expecting the G1 to work on AT&T's 3G band is a lot like expecting an FM-only radio to pick up AM signals.....or exactly like expecting an American FM radio to pick up all the FM stations in Japan (which uses a wider FM band.)
But keep in mind that the 1700/2100 numbers don't refer to a specific frequency, but a band of frequencies at or around the number. If you've ever used a shortwave radio, you know that they use terms like "the 11-meter band," which is a range of frequencies with a wavelength of around 11m. Luckily, the range of the 2100MHz band that T-Mobile USA uses overlaps the European band enough to make the phone work over there.

You are correct... I remember reading on AT&T thou that it was 1700... but then again we all know how well the cell phone companies advertise specs LOL

I found something that might be of interest... If you install "Any Cut" and create a link for "Phone Info" (Long press on you desktop, then > Shortcut > Any Cut > Activity> Phone Info). Once created, you will have a shortcut on your desktop for "Phone Info". Click the "Phone Info" Shortcut and press the menu key. Then click the menu option "Select radio b..." From here you will have the option to change your radio band:

My phone is locked. I can't use my AT&T SIM. Sorry. But when I switch to different bands, I do loose my signal until I switch back.
I have a friend who builds small electronic devices. If I had a damaged tilt would it be possible to remove the 3G antenna and a few resistors and replace the ones in the G1 to make it work on the ATT 3G bands?
Does anyone know enough about the board construction to know what would need to be replaced?
I did use that activity to change the band to get it to work with my provider here in the United Arab Emirates. The thing is I honestly don't know what they are using, publishing reliable info is not a strong point of the operators around here. I grabbed that of a web-site:
The Middle East operators are using the primary 2.1 GHz band for the UMTS/HSDPA operation. Not too precise eh.

I was on the horn with CS anyway and figured it would be worth a try to ask for an unlock code request for my G1, they dont have the magic keygens at the Tmob secret base, they have to request it from the OEM, back in the day they gave them out but after many public keygens they got a bit pickier about who get the keys to the liquor cabnet.
when mine comes Ill get an at&T prepay bump sim and mess about a bit just to prove it wont work, and to everybody else ...CALL 611!! ask them for the unlock code tell um you go back and forth to Europe or Iraq or Pagopago, I may not be necessarry but I always have a bit of fun with the story, it used to be a email system send imei to "[email protected]" and get your code in a few days, the good ole dayz

The Menu is shown as the Chipset Qualcomm 7201 actually supports These Bands, But it Require Radio RF/TS Unit to Actually Push Radio Frequcny via Internal antenna. Seeing the Board Picture it only have 1700 and 2100 RF Units. So even is Chipset is compatible it can not Push the Signal or Received Signal other then it is made for. I think in Future then can alter some Hardware and make it more compatible.
So, I'm wondering if I had a broken tilt with the 850 transmit antenna chip in it if I could have that antenna module removed and put in the G1 would that be all that is needed to work on the ATT 3G network?
Anybody, know if that might work since the chipset seems to support the frequency?
I can't afford to pay more than $175 for my phone. I'm a long time ATT customer and can't/won't change carriers. So, I'm trying to get one off of Craigslist or Ebay for about $250.00 or $275.00.
If anyone knows where I can get one for that price please let me know. If I can get one I'll try the antenna replacement idea.

I'll use both UMTS and GSM networks because the UMTS covarage is limited in Turkey so far. I'm looking for Sprint or AT&T versions but I didn't understand if need to unlock these devices or not. In a thread I read that Sprint is unlocked for GSM networks but the same thread didn't mention anything about UMTS band. Please make suggestions to me.
I hope that I could explain my concerns clearly.

That should have the information about which phone you need. You can always unlock the phones, so make sure it has the correct GSM/CDMA networks and you should be fine.
*edit*
I should have mentioned this before. Sometimes carriers are really picky about which phones they will activate, make sure that Vodafone will activate the model TP2 that you get.

The Sprint TP2 will work for you in its stock configuration.
It supports GSM 900, GSM 1800 and UMTS 2100 out of the box and it is NOT SIM locked. Basically all you'll have to do it pop in your SIM card and go.
Now, you will still have to register the IMEI with customs (assuming Turkey still has that stupid ass rule) so it doesn't get blocked from the network, but aside from that you're golden.
If you get the ATT version it will also work, however it will be SIM locked out of the box and you will have to unlock it to use it. The same is true of the Verizon TP2.

On ebay i found a Sprint with bad ESN. In the descriptions it says that it can be used in any networks other than Sprint. Can I use a phone like this in Turkey with confidence?

Yes. A Sprint Touch Pro 2 will work just fine with a Vodaphone SIM so long as your local network is one of the three frequencies that I listed.
You only need to replace the Radio ROM if you want to use it on US GSM frequencies.

Bad ESN means that the phone has been banned from its home network.
This usually happens because:
1) There is an outstanding bill that was not paid
2) The phone was reported lost and claimed on insurance
3) The phone was stolen
If you are using it on another CDMA network or on a GSM network, the bad ESN will not impact you (aside from possibly in a karmic way).
If it does have a bad ESN you should get it pretty cheap.

I have a Motorola RAZR HD XT925 which was sourced from Rogers Canada. I was wondering how I can check the devices LTE frequencies? Is there any engineering code and/or menu that would assist with this? This device apparently supports LTE 800 / 1800 / 2600 or LTE 700 / 800 / 1700 / 1800 / 2600 according to GSM Arena. I am wanting to use the LTE 1800MHz frequency in Australia, though cannot get it to connect.
I have tried the following:
Searching for networks manually / letting the device select them automatically
Toggling between 3G only and Automatic (4G/3G/2G)
I definitely have the correct APN settings configured (for Telstra in Australia)
Data is enabled, the SIM card connects to 4G in another mobile
Any assistance would be appreciated, in finding out which LTE network frequencies this device supports.

Do not rely on GSM Arena those guys are rookies.
The Rogers RAZR HD has LTE 700/1700/2100 via the rogers website.

XT925: (international)
Secondary Cellular Networks: LTE700 (B17), LTE1700/2100 (B4), LTE1800 (B3), LTE2600 (B7), LTE800 (B20)
From what I've read, B3 is Australia's LTE band, so it is supported, but it might be turned off in roger's radio.
Have you tried installing the firmware for Telstra? It's available here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/van...25_A045_WIG149790_Service1FF_fastboot.xml.zip from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943879 Maybe switching to your provider's firmware will fix the LTE issue.

Hi. This is a good source here in Australia. Hopefully is updated and current. http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies
Note, however, that LTE is really new here and not yet well implemented. I live in Sydney, but I'm outside of the LTE network at home. I'd have to travel closer to the business district to get it. I think its implemented around the airport as well. LTE is still a work in progress and Telstra is ahead of the game with the other telcos, but you're going to want to be able to connect to their "Next G" or 3.5 G to fallback on otherwise youre going to get 2G.
In any case, you want to make sure your APN settings are correct as well. There is loads of misinformation about that. You can have Telstra set them for you (or at least it worked on my Galaxy S2, haven't tried with this phone since I got it from their store). On my Galaxy S2, I had read lots of documentation and had things working but found that after going through a Telstra automated thing (I think the above link), that it set my APNs for me and I ended up with better speed and signal.

The 2100 frequency on their 3G or NextG (3.5G) may have been turned off at this point; I don't remember. They may still be using it for legacy phones and people on bring your own phone plans but I beleive they had wanted to either shut it down or sell it to another carrier. I don't recall that my SGS2 got 850 ... I just noticed there's tabs on the Telstra page that explains their coverage. Click on them and that's more accurate than what I just typed
I suspect your problem is that you may not be in an LTE covered area. Either that or its your APN settings. Let us know how it goes.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read your post properly that the SIM works in another device. If it isn't your APN settings, you can take it to a Telstra store and ask them if they know what the problem is. On occasion they do know what their talking about. You can point them at this web page if need be and it might encourage them to look a little deeper:

I no longer have this device, and unfortunately never tried flashing the Telstra firmware on the device.

The device that I had was sourced from Rogers Canada, and didn't support LTE 1800MHz out of the box. They wouldn't have been able to help.

Telstra's 3G 2100MHz network was part of 3GIS, an agreement between Telstra and VHA, which ended on August 31st. Telstra still uses the 3G 2100MHz network frequency, it is actually part of their Next G network now, they however do not advertise this, as very few sites are still using this network frequency, and it is far more important to have a device that supports 3G 850MHz. Telstra lost quite a few 3G 2100MHz sites when 3GIS closed, although all of the areas would have had 3G 850MHz anyhow, so it was not really a big deal.

I just purchased a brand new Z3 (D6603) in addition to my existing Z3C. Before I purchased the device I researched that it has the proper basebands for AT&T. Based on xda, Sony, and various other online sources, the D6603 should support the following bands:
LTE Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 20; UMTS HSPA+ 850 (Band V), 900 (Band VIII), 1700 (Band IV), 1900 (Band II), 2100 (Band I) MHz; GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
When I received the phone, I immediately proceeded to root it and update it to 5.1.1. Once I did that, I proceeded to obtain a nano-sim to fit the device. Once I put the nano-sim in I got "no service" whatsoever. The phone doesn't want to connect to AT&T. To test whether or not the nano-sim is defective, I proceeded to take the nano-sim from my Z3C, which is known to be working. Again, "no service" on the Z3. Then I put the new nano-sim in my Z3C and it did work.
In addition, I rebooted the phone numerous times, toggled airplane mode multiple time and also went back to KitKat to ensure it is not a Lollipop issue. All of this did not help.
Following that I proceeded to check the service menu (*#*#7378423#*#*). The phone states it is a D6603 unit. So does the original Sony packaging. However, when I looked at the available (working) basebands in the service menu I couldn't believe what I was seeing:
GSM_850, GSM_900, GSM_1800, GSM_1900, UMTS_BC1, UMTS_BC5, UMTS_BC6, UMTS_BC19, LTE_BC1, LTE_BC3, LTE_BC19, LTE_BC1
Obviously several LTE basebands are missing when compared to the original specs - some of which I need to connect to AT&T LTE. That said, I also switched the band preference to GSM only and couldn't connect either. Again, the nano-sim is confirmed functioning.
Any idea what this is? Did Sony change the D6603 specs? Any chance I can get to the full baseband spectrum as per the original specs? Right not it is basically a $350 paperweight for me.
In case you suspect the firmware's I used to flash / root / update and subsequently downgrade, I used the following:

When flashing, I used FlashTool without any exclusions (meaning that I also flashed the baseband). Full data, Dalvik and Cache wipe was also always performed.
I searched via google as well as here on XDA, but I couldn't find any post which appears to have the same problem. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want the basebands that the phone was / is advertised with. Thanks in advance!

Try turning off LTE and see if that helps.
There is some issue with AT&T's HD Voice which works on LTE causing issues

@aviralmsharma, thank you for your response. Turning LTE off doesn't do anything to change the situation. I tried LTE only, GSM only and every combo in between.
The list of available basebands is in the service menu *#*#7378423#*#* -> Service Info -> Configuration.
As for the "Japan band", that is in the info menu *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information -> upper right corner where the three "..." are -> Select radio band.

@aviralmsharma, thank you for your response. Turning LTE off doesn't do anything to change the situation. I tried LTE only, GSM only and every combo in between.
The list of available basebands is in the service menu *#*#7378423#*#* -> Service Info -> Configuration.
As for the "Japan band", that is in the info menu *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information -> upper right corner where the three "..." are -> Select radio band.

You're right, I do see more bands. Could that be because of the ROM you're running and/or radio?

Aviralmsharma, i honestly don't know. That isnwhy i posted the question here at xda to begin with.
As you can see from my original post, i used the firmwares that are commonly available here at xda and have been used by many people before. I even used the U.S. Generic firmware version when i updated to 5.1.1.
Obviously something isn't right with my D6603. What should I do? I fear flashing the baseband in FlashTool isn't going to fix it. Is there a way to flash or enable the radio so it reads the proper bands?

The APN setting are correct and set for AT&T. I compared it to my Z3C, which is also on AT&T, as well as to AT&T's APN information available through their website. I still believe the issue is related to the fact that my D6603 does not list LTE band 2, 4, 5, and 17 as working bands - all of which are AT&T's LTE bands.
Any other suggestions that might work?

@Oban I believe that you do not have a international D6603. You seem to have purchased one of the Japanese models hence the missing bands and the Japan radio band selection. I suggest you try to return the phone to the place of purchase.

Kansasboy, wow... so Sony created a sub-version of the D6603 (carrying no specifically different model number) which differs from the international (or what I would call standard) D6603 model?
Is this "Japanese model" the same, hardware-wise, as the international model? Meaning, are the basebands excluded because of hardware limitations, or is it the software? If it is the latter, can the software be modified (as suggested in other threads - enabling bands on Qualcomm radios)? Or is the only way to return it as per your original suggestion?

Based on the bands you have, your phone is the SO-01G model for docomo mobile in Japan that has been flashed with the D6603 firmware, hence the D6603 model. The S0-01G has 32gb of storage which you would find by flashing the S0-01G firmware. I can not guarantee you that the bands you are missing could be enabled. It depends if Sony simply disabled the bands in the modem or if the phone actually has a different radio filter than the D6603. I have successfully unlocked lte band 12 on my D6603 and will be more than happy to walk you through the steps in unlocking bands. However if I were you I would simply return the phone and get a real D6603

So... I did spend some time playing with the bands and working through the qualcomm band enabling thread on xda. I managed to enable everything needed and now the working bands read as follows:
GSM_850, GSM_900, GSM_1800, GSM_1900, UMTS_BC1, UMTS_BC2, UMTS_BC4, UMTS_BC5, UMTS_BC6, UMTS_BC8,, UMTS_BC19, LTE_BC1, LTE_BC2, LTE_BC3, LTE_BC4, LTE_BC5, LTE_BC7, LTE_BC8, LTE_BC13, LTE_BC17, LTE_BC20
I also went into the *#*#INFO#*#* menu and enabled "USA Band" (previously I only had the Japan Band option). I also toggled airplane mode multiple times and rebooted the device more than once.
Now the bad news: still no service. I recognizes the sim card, but it doesn't connect / register with the network. I also triple checked the APN setting.

Did you add the reserved for bc10 to the value in 1877 and the guide for the xperia z2 lte unlock said in the thread?

Alright, despite the afford, the wife told me to stop tinker with it and send it back. It's now on the way back to Amazon. I hope i can find a true international D6603 that will work as advertised.

I've got a LG Phoenix 2(K371) phone that I bought from Bestbuy and unlocked through AT&T
The phone is supposed to support the UMTS B1(2100 Mhz) frequency (as stated in specs).
I'm in North Africa right now for a business trip and unfortunately I wasn't able to get any 3G data with the local carrier that uses the UMTS 2100 Mhz frequency, I'm stuck with only 2G while my other phone works just fine.
I tried to change my Network Mode from 4G to 3G but the Network mode menu is missing!!!!!!
My questions are:
1- Does the K371 really supports the UMTS 2100 Mhz frequency ?
2- How can I change my Network mode from 4G/Lte to 3g/WCDMA?

My understanding is that either the official specifications of the phone are wrong - it doesn't support the HSDPA frequency of 2100 MHz, or (most likely) this frequency is disabled in the phone software settings since [email protected] doesn't use this frequency in the US. In any case it is very frustrating: I bought this phone convinced it is going to work while I am travelling in Europe, but obviously it doesn't as 2G data connection is useless.
Same problem in SE Asia. Phone doesn't have the right LTE bands but HSPC should work. Only getting 2G. No option in the hidden menu to change the modem RAT settings that I can see. *#546368#*371#

I have found a solution. I am using it outside the US. I contacted my cellular provider, gave them the phone name (LG K371) and they sent me a text message with automatic settings for their data network. As soon as I opened it, I got a message like "data settings have been updated" and now it works on 3G and 4G without any issues. You may also be able to find these data configuration settings on your cell service provider's web site.

Sorry for a late reply, but here's the real scoop about the LG K371 (AT&T)
First, being a "cheap" LG phone, there are very few bands actually included, and they only cover the main (not all) AT&T US frequencies, therefore it's no surprise that doesn't work on all overseas carriers. Again, they are covering only major US bands, and despite what it shows on the box or specs it may not be always true. B1 (2,100Mhz) band has different sub-bands, therefore it doesn't mean that the US B1 will work on an overseas B1, let alone the air-interface (2G/3G/4G/LTE) may not all be supported even if this sub-band exists.
Second, being that it's an AT&T phone, they are knows to load firmware with major restrictions for band selection called RAT Restrictions, which cannot be undone unless you can reflash it with a non-customized firmware, but you can't do that either due to the locked bootloader. A better option is to always go with the un-customized or Tmobile K7/K8 because they always have a lot more bands enabled than the AT&T version. Better yet, go with a Samsung which have more bands even on the AT&T models.
Bottom line, "cheap" phones along with AT&T restrictions will not work everywhere, despite the specs, and there's nothing you can do about it.
And my favorite old adage is "You get what you pay for!" LOL
