Solved: stuck at "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode
So you are stuck on the dreaded " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" screen and there is nothing you can do to get your phone to start normally or even get to the download screen?
Fret not lads & ladies, I've already gone thru the pain and suffering and have come out new man, and I'll tell you how I did it. Also im starting all the way at linux/mac so everyones included.
First things first, you are going to have to get your computer ready with the right software for it to work.
You will need to make sure you get an original stock rom, make sure your source forwhere you download it is credible, this was my first mistake and why evidently I got myself into this mess.
I'm sure other roms might work that are modified for your device, but I suggest stock, and starting fresh just to make sure everything is up and running.
I am not responsible for your device, it may get bricked if done wrong.
Linux & Mac users first.
1. You will need to downloadable a program called Hiemdall, its a program similar to Odin3 (windows program).
2. You will need to extract the stock rom you downloaded earlier, I suggest to a folder in your desktop, wd will call it "folder1".
3. Now open up Hiemdall in root, (sudo Hiemdall-frontend for terminal) and then make sure device is on and stuck on the " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" screen, plug it in, then press the utilities tab and detect. ($ Heimdall detect)(terminal users). Make sure you do all this fast because the tablets are kinda funny when they stay connected.
4. Now clickthe Utilities tab then the "save as..." button and save the destination for the .pit file in the same location as the extracted stock rom folder (folder1).
5. Next click the Flash tab, and click browse and locate your .pit file, the one you just downloaded. Next click add under Partition (files), and then change the partion name (On the left hand under patition details) to recovery and browse to the extracted folder (folder1) and click and add the recovery.img and press start.
Now if all went well your tablet will have restarted itself and you have seen the logo (Samsung). but the chances are it wont load past that screen, but thats ok because now you can get your device into download mode and re-flash the whole rom. Do this the same way you did the recovery.img, but make sure you add each new one to the correct name in the partitions details section.
Now if this didnt work, then dont worry you can still join the windows crew and do it hat way. Simple download a program called virtualbox and get a windows xp iso, thats up to you to figure out as I deal with open source only O.S
So aftr you do that just load up the virtualbox with windows xp and follow below. I found it a bit easier as well.
Windows users....
I found this way to be pretty simple and straight forward,
1. Download Odin 1.3 (1.85 wasn't working for me)
2. Download the clockworkrecoveryMod
3. Open up Odin and browse in the PDA section for the CWM you downloaded and add it, next plug in your device and the box should turn yellow on the top left.
4. Press start and let it finish and reboot your device and you should now be able to boot into CWM and re flash a rom, or if you were smart just restore from a previous backup and get all the apps and stuff back too.
I dont know why cwm worked but it did so no complaints, just make sure you go into cwm and backup your device and with titanium (google play app) before you start playing with the root.
I did this and it worked for me, so hopefully it did for you. Im sorry if it didnt but dont get down, j6st be patient and ask and someone will help.
The key is getting the recovery.img to flash on I believe and maybe the cwm has it built in the package, im sure someone can shed some light on it.

If you can reach to the CWM recovery mode: Download firmware in zip form, you can get it from the below link. if you have a zip file leave it.
After obtaining the firmware copy to your external sdcard using a card reader or any other method
In recovery mode select "Instal zip from sdcard" then select "choose zip from external sdcard" then select the copied firmware zip file from the list and wait for completion
After completion go back and select "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" reboot . it will take some time for reboot atleat 15min. it worked for me. hope it will work for you. good luck

Hi! Do you still having the CWM and Odin 1.3?
Hi.. I was experiencing this problem. Then without even thinking deeply, I try google any solution regarding this matter without referring to this thread first. I found this guys solution as he said it is for all samsung model.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfgq6bYfKLg
After done flashing, my tab giving a samsung logo and went off until now. I was unable to enter the recovery and download mode. I try to connect the tab with PC but it kept reconnecting repetitively although universal samsung usb driver has been installed. Any idea how to solve this?
make sure you backup all your important data before proceeding with this guide. I am not responsible for what happens to your device.
If your looking to root your galaxy tab 4 T230NU, follow these easy steps to gain root access.
1. Download all 4 files below. If you already have samsung usb drivers installed, skip step 2.
2. Extract your driver installation file and click the setup file for your samsung tab, and click Next. Now select your language and country, and click Next. Then, pick your install location and click Install. If you prefer to leave your install location default, just proceed by clicking Install.
3. After you have installed your samsung drivers, put the SuperSU file you downloaded earlier onto your tablet's internal/external memory. Now, extract Odin3_V3.09.zip and open the application. Now, put your tablet in download mode by holding down Power, Vol Down, and Home. You should see a blue box appear at the top left of the Odin page. After you successfully entered your tablet into download mode, untick Auto Reboot, and F. Reset Time in Option. Now, click AP, and locate your TWRP file you downloaded earlier, but do not click start yet.
4. Once you click start, Odin will begin flashing your custom recovery. Do not let your tablet boot up by turning off your tablet, or your stock recovery will overwrite TWRP. Once you turned off your tablet, enter TWRP by holding down Power, Vol Up, and home. After you booted into TWRP, click Install and locate your Supersu zip, and flash it. Once the flashing is complete, go back and select Reboot, then select system. Now you have root! Please give a thumbs up if this method worked for you.
Been Waiting for this but stuck
Thank you for this post! I'm anxious to get it going, but I'm a newb to Samsung, Odin, etc., so I need a little more detail. I'm pretty sure I installed the openrecovery file, but now the tablet is back up and I have no idea how to download the SuperSU file. I can't find "install" as you've described. I'm I installing it by selecting something on the device? I dragged the file onto the tablet....please be a specific as you can for a blonde, old lady newb lol

All you need to do is reboot into TWRP by holding down Power, Vol Up, and Home. After you have booted into TWRP, click install and locate the SuperSU file on your tablet. Let me know if you run into any more problems. :good:
I added a part in step 3, saying to put the SuperSU file onto your tablet's internal/external memory before you flash TWRP onto your tab.

There already is a "how to root your SM-T230" thread here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54551588
The SM-T230 and SM-T230NU are the same device. Only difference is IR baster feature on the 230NU.

I didn't see that. Well, this thread has more thorough directions in case someone needs a little more info on how to root this tab. But thanks for the link.
I did everything that you said to do and I mean everything step by step and I flashed SuperSU and when I pushed reboot after everything was done and I opened root checker to see if I did it. It said it has not been properly done and I also tried a different app and that one said the tablet has not been Rooted please help. email me with any answers please @ [email protected] any help would be greatly appreciated.

ordered a manufacture refurbished tab 4 T230NY from amazon says it comes with 4.4 another customer says theres recently updated to 5.1.1 will this method work if i update to 5.1.1? I would rather have lollipop without installing a rom
So there is a bargain chinese 4G phone called the 'InFocus M512'.
The problem with it is that it comes without Google Apps and also is not rooted (sometimes is). Also it does not have CWM Recovery.
So this quick tutorial shows you how to root, install CWM Recovery and install google apps on the M512.
I'm not responsible for any damage
Rooting:
Method 1
1.Go to settings>>Security>>Check Unknown Sources tap OK.
2.Download this file.
3.Install
4.Run and tap 'get root' or somthing like that.
5.Delete KingRoot and some chinese app, but DO NOT DELETE KingUser!
6.Done!
Method 2
Flash CWM Recovery using the 2nd method from this post. If you have rooted usign the first method use method 1 from that post.
Download UPDATE-SuperSU-x.xx.zip (i used 2.46)
Reboot into CWM.
Select Install zip>choose zip from /sdcard>select UPDATE-SuperSU-x.xx.zip, press power button
Reboot now
GApps
1.Download this zip file
2.Reboot into CWM.
3.Select Install zip>choose zip from /sdcard>select the file, press power button
4.Reboot now.
How to delete KingUser (only if you have SuperSU and it is working)
Download ES File explorer, enable root explorer, go to /system/app and delete KingUser.
So this is how to get root, cwm and gapps on the m512.
First Method no good for me
I put the kingroot file in the adb tools folder and used the install command. It wasn't clear from the above whether the phone needed to be in recovery or some other mode so I tried a few times, in recovery mode and again just connected as an mtp device in the normal way. Either way the result was the same, it said "Invalid APK File: KingRoot.......".
I will have a go at the CWM thing next.
I am still on the 103A ROM that the phone came to me with - I have been trying, on and off, without success to update and then root it , for months.
When trying to flash an update ROM it tells me that the update package has unexpected contents and the there is an error in the update file and then says "Status 7". You can read all about my lack of success on this forum under the threads M512 started by Galaxy Why.
I'm trying, I really am....
Let me start by saying thanks for making the effort to post what you know and so to help people like me, however.
I tried to follow the method 2 (as I don't have root) from your other post (the one linked to above with the words "the 2nd method from this post" but got stuck.
Your instructions in normal my comments in italics.
Method 2: (No root)
1.Connect your phone via USB to your PC. OK
2.Enable MTP. OK
3.Enable USB Debugging. Settings>Developer Options> tick USB Debugging. OK
4.On your computer, 2 drives will appear: One of them is a CD-Rom which contains all drivers. OK
5.Click on that CD-Rom and it will install all drivers. It doesn't, or it may do, but what it definately does is asks me to put a disc in the drive and tries to do some kind of dir_all in windows explorer - I would post a screenshot here but this page only allows URL's- and I'm not sure how to go about that.. but I think I've managed to upload a screenshot....
After waiting for 5 minutes or so to see if something would happen as the green progress bar ground to a halt but the busy circle continued I hit the cancel button on the "please insert a disc dialogue" and then ploughed on anyway ....
6.Plug phone in again. Now this had me confused, I assume you mean unplug AND THEN plug the phone in again.
7.Download the .ZIP file and extract it somewhere. Which/what zip file do you mean exactly?? I couldn't get past this.
8.Click on _install_cwm_6.0.5.1.cmd
9.Your phone will ask you something, just tick "always allow from this computer" and hit OK.
10.Your phone will reboot into DL Mode, then it will reboot again.
11.Recovery is installed.
It's late and I'm tiring so sorry if missed something obvious. Any advice?

Looks like you don't have a adb driver
And... why do you want to root your phone? Installing CWM is not root required.
M512 comes with a unlocked bootloader, just boot into bootloader and you can flash anything you like.
I made a customized stock rom based on version 2280, bloatwares removed and Google Play framework included. (You can download the apps back from Play Store, if you needs those)
Now the phone has 2.09GB free spaces :victory:
If you were interested on it, I can upload it and give you a link.

it's works for me. thx~
OK, after messing around for a bit, i was able to get root, and custom recovery working, and its actually pretty simple...
1. - Update to 5.1.1 via ota,
2. - Download Philz (CWM touch) Recovery and Beta SuperSU 2.64 (System-Less Root) (Pretty sure its in post #3).
3. - Copy the SuperSu .zip file to your sdcard on the Galaxy tab.
4. - Make sure you have the proper samsung drivers for download mode, and place you tablet in download mode by holding Vol-/Home/Power then pressing vol+ to continue.
5. - Connect you PC to the tablet using a suitable micro usb cable and use odin (I use version 3.10.7) and make sure you see you device under ID:COM.
6. - Click the AP button (PDA button in older versions), and browse to where you have the Philz recovery .tar file, and also select the options tab and deselect the auto reboot option.
7. - Click Start, and once you see pass, you can unplug your device from the computer, but do not just reboot the tablet normally just yet.
8. - Reboot the device to recovery by holding Vol+/Home/Power, and if all went well, you should be in philz recovery.
9. - Do a full system backup (warning you will need at least 4GB of storage available).
10. - Once backup completes, install zip from sdcard, and navigate to where you put the SuperSU 2.64 zip file, and flash it.
11. - Reboot Tablet, and from you PC extract the originally downloaded SuperSU 2.64 file on you PC, and navigate to the common directory on the extracted folder, and copy the superuser.apk file to your tablet.
12. - Make sure that you have Unknown Sources checked in the Device administration section of security settings so that you can install superuser.apk.
13. - Install superuser.apk and PROFIT!!!
If you have any questions, I'll try and fill in, i know that some of this write up is written with the expectation that you have knowledge of what you are doing, as i didn't explain in detail some actions necessary, but if you are rooting, and flashing recoveries, i assume you know what you are doing somewhat... With that being said i take no responsibility for any damage you may cause your device attempting this process, and i will not be replacing anyones device if you brick you tablet, your tablet catches on fire, or if your tablet turns into the devil and steals your soul. You are on your own...
But realistically this process was pretty easy, and i figured it all out just today, so i'm pretty sure you can do the same.
This is only a temporary solution for root, until a full kernel can be released, and we can fully root system, but for apps like titanium, es file explorer, and such (I haven't' tried debloating, you are on your own with that), this works... Once a custom kernel is developed (looks like @moonbutt74 is working that angle btw... ) you will definitely be able to debloat, and flash whatever you might want granted it is for this device...
EDIT** I forgot to mention this will trigger the KNOX counter, so if you don't care then continue as you would, pretty sure if you are looking to root, you don't care about the KNOX counter, and if you do, then maybe you should be looking into somehow writing a stock kernel that can be customized without triggering KNOX, slightly more advanced then what we are doing here... **
EDIT** Please give credit to the guy who "found it first" and should have done the write up but didn't**

Yes that is my phone in post 3, as i was the first outside of the team to have a rooted LG optimus G, thanks to TeamCodefire, shellnut2, JCase, AutoPrime, thecubed, and many more that contributed to the lg root evolution. If you have any questions about my integrity, you can ask any of them...
I cleaned the offensive posts and the user was infracted. At the OP, thanks for managing this appropriately and not escalating it to a flame war.
Back on topic please.
These steps are NOT needed... Once you complete step 10 and reboot SuperSU is installed and accessible...
This is only a temporary solution for root... Why?
And, the Kingroot and Super Sume method works sometimes to get root without tripping KNOX! This info I also posted in another thread...
This recovery/root method will work for mostly ALL Samsung and Nexus devices that have a working recovery... Thanks to Chainfire for his hard work!

Temporary solution is in the meaning of not fully rooted... This method is systemless, and if you want to make full init.d edits, i would not recommend using a systemless root option, as its kinda like a sudo root, for those that use linux, they will understand what i'm talking about. Yes you can allow root access to apps the request it, but as for full system modifications like the sound mixer, and init.d edits, i don't think i would go there, also not really sure if this will work with debloating, I'm not exactly sure about on samsung how it acts when you remove "system" apps (more so apps installed by default by samsung), I do know that one of the quickest ways to brick a lg is to remove system apps, and if you don't have an unlocked bootloader, as well as custom kernel, during boot, you get a kernel panic if system apps are removed, and in some cases has rendered the device unusable, (nothing an insurance claim couldn't fix tho... lol). Oh, and for the final steps, i actually did have to do them, I had no superuser app in my apps drawer, I attempted downloading from the playstore, and it was the wrong version SuperSU, and kept telling me i needed to update my binary. Then did steps 11-13, and all was nice in the world again, and no more nag about updating binaries, as well as it is the correct apk for the su binary that is flashed in step 10.

Here's the magic: mega(dot)nz/#F!ZkARSbRI!SV3kQ6jmsi9eGwHoRKPfew
(sry first post.. they have rules against posting web links directly.. replace (dot) with . and you should have your recovery file)
had to do a bit of digging myself. The other files should be easy to find via Google.

Just Read the posts before yours, the link is right there.
There's a reason posts are added and not just replaced with new ones. This is only a 2 paged thread, not hard at all to read it all.

Thanks for this, however I can't get wifi to turn on. I saw mention in another thread about deleting wpa_supplicant.conf and using ODIN to upgrade to PF1 (could only find PH4 but it fails), but neither worked. Does anyone know of a fix?

Hi all,
I have a Wiko Rainbow Jam (which is provided with the stock rom "Wiko Rainbow Jam version 8", Android Lollipop 5.1 and the latest updates from Wiko), is about a week that I attempt to root my phone, but I am unable to do this operation, since I am totally unable to mount the /system as RW, and furthermore the bootloader is locked.
Firstly I found this method which consist to write/flash the TWRP custom recovery in place of the original one:
Root method 1
(sorry for the Google Translate link, but I cannot find the same how-to in English)
Which seems similar to this how-to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63803008&postcount=5
But seems that these two methods will wipe/erase everything on my phone, and I would avoid this risk.
I also read that by flashing another custom recovery I will be unable to install updates from Wiko.
Then I tried this method using adb which is more simple:
https://f-droid.org/forums/topic/tutorial-how-to-root-an-android-device/
But when I launch the "adb root" command, all that I get is "adbd cannot run as root in production builds"; so I attempted various workarounds to "fix" adb, but all unsuccesfully.
I have to mention the fact that I have some skills in using Linux and the shell commands: maybe there would be a way to place the "su" binary on my Phone using Linux on my computer, by logging on the phone as root user, by acquiring the needed privileges?
Any help/suggestion/hints would be very appreciate! :good:
Kind regards.
I have a mtk6580 phone and also had the root issues, for a while I used kingroot, which rooted fine but I didnt trust it. Then I used supersume to get rid of kingroot which seemed to work but again, wasnt 100% it was all gone. Followed a similar guide to your first link which wasnt working. What worked for me was:
Download the twrp recovery .img file
rename it to recovery.img
open SPflash tools
add your own scatter file from your stock rom
deselect all the boxes except recovery
double click the recovery address box and find the renamed recovery.img
click download
plug your turned off phone in,
let it flash.
reboot into recovery
select reboot system
TWRP will tell you its not rooted and ask to install superSU
swipe for yes
reboot and you are rooted.
NO DATA LOSS
Thank you for this detailed how-to! However, for me, nor kingroot, kingoroot, framaroot and no other apk worked on my phone, so I will attempt to try your method, but first I have some questions:
1): On my phone, under SETTINGS > DEVELOPER OPTIONS, I can see the option “OEM unlocking”: I have to enable this option to permit the flashing of the TWRP img?
2): Is ok to download TWRP from here? dl.twrp.me/i9300/twrp-2.8.6.1-i9300.tar.html
3): "add your own scatter file from your stock rom":
where I can get/grab such file?
4): "TWRP will tell you its not rooted and ask to install superSU":
so TWRP is already provided with the SuperSU utility?
5): To be sure to avoid any risk, here I have a backup of my phone, which was done using "adb backup -apk -shared -all"; in case of emergency I will be able to restore my phone using this backup?
Many thanks for your attention! :good:

Ok, seems that such file was available in the first link:
s000.tinyupload.com/download.php?file_id=53888272183191245346&t=5388827218319124534686744
is called MT6580_Android_scatter.txt , can you take a look and tell me if is ok?
Many thanks!
1) cant hurt to turn it on, however the phone will be flashed whilst turned off so dont know if its needed, but Im sure I wouldve enabled it.
2) and 3) I dont know what your exact model number etc.. is for your phone, so the twrp you would have to find and check yourself, go here: http://www.needrom.com/category/others/u-v-w-x-y-z/brands-w/wiko/ and you can try to get a twrp from there, and definetely get a stock rom. Use the scatterfile from an 'SP TOOLS FLASHABLE STOCK/UPDATE ROM'
4) yes
5) I dont know, I dont use adb and wouldnt like to say its OK. You can use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.onnandbup&hl=en which will make a TWRP or CWM backup of your entire phone which you can then flash in TWRP or CWM once they are flashed, or get all the data from the backup. I would advise to find this out before trying though, just in case. I personally didnt lose any data, flashed twrp in SPtools, took 5 seconds, rebooted, added SU, rebooted, took 2 minutes and everything was still there.
---------- Post added at 04:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:41 PM ----------
it has to be a scatter file from your exact model of phone, as everything has to match, partitions, nvram...etc... loads of things that can go wrong if the scatter is wrong

Ok: it was painless differently from what I thought: now, following your advice (I used the TWRP and the scatter file from the first link) my phone is nicely provided with the root access
EDIT: was necessary to activate the “OEM unlocking” option under SETTINGS > DEVELOPER OPTION, without this option activated, I was unable to flash the TWRP recovery img.
Many thanks!

Glad it worked lots of guides I saw also made it excessively complicated, this way took you what? 2 minutes? And am guessing all your data is safe and untouched.

Yeah, it took about 2 minutes, just the time to figure out that I needed the USB OTG cable with an usb mouse and to browse to the UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76.zip file (as I said I used the TWRP posted in the first link, which doesn't work with the touch screen).
I want to say thank you again for your friendly assistance!
