This worked for me. I upgraded to the HTC m8 on black Friday weekend 2014 through best buy. I hope it helps you. I used method #6
www.droid-life.com/2014/09/25/upgrade-verizon-keep-unlimited-data/
Darn! I used Method One and paid $500. Using Method Six would have required me to cut down my S3 MicroSIM to a NanoSIM. I thought I might have to that anyway so I bought a SIM cutter. Method Six would have saved me $500 but if caught I imagine I would definitely have lost my unlimited data.
I am starting to understand why the Japanese are going back to Flip Phones.
I've used method 6 in the past with no issues. I purchased through BB.

No but I get it.
I believe Verizon has now made a policy change so that you can no longer use options 2-5 don't quote me on that but I have seen that on another forum, option 6 is risky as hell wouldn't even go there but then again I'm just paranoid. When I upgrade to the M9 (hopefully there is a plus) I'll be buying full price.

If something like the sunshine method is available yes. Verizon likes to play the difficult one and not allow their phones be unlocked via htcdev.

Just used option 5 a couple months ago. Caveat: if you purchase a smart phone with the extra line, you have to keep a smartphone data plan on that line for 2 years or pay ETF. If you aren't going to be using that extra line, it's cheaper to just buy a new phone for full retail.
I bought my last two phones off of Swappa. Still rolling strong with Unlimited Data here.
Has anyone tried (lately) getting a device via BestBuy dot com, and doing the "keep current plan" option, to upgrade a device without losing Unlimited Data? I'm trying to help a friend update his device (to a Galaxy S5, currently available for $1), and I'm not seeing any place to keep current plan. I suspect they (at Verizon's behest) fixed the loophole, but I'm looking for confirmation.

You might see what happens for a few different devices. I bought my m8 that way and a few months later I bought my wife's 2013 Moto X and saw that the galaxy s4 mini (I think) didn't give the keep-your-existing-plan option while the Moto X and m8 still did.
I just got one from best buy and one from Amazon. I swapped the sim cards between the devices, activated online and still have unlimited on both lines so far.
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using XDA Free mobile app
I have no idea how they're still allowing this to happen, yet are closing other loopholes like having extra lines for dummy phones. It seems like it shouldn't even be a thing. Can't Verizon just get the info from best buy when someone buys a phone at subsidized rate and then make the change on their end? Likewise, when a phone gets returned Verizon would restore the previous plan.
It must not be that simple, because if so it would have been long resolved by now. I'm definitely not complaining as I still have unlimited and hope this loophole is still around next year but I guess I'm worried it won't be. It seems too obvious for them to fix.

Ditto to Swappa, 2nd phone from there now and both good so far. New phone requires a NanoSim, old phone has MicroSim. The new phone came rooted with custom rom, and I didn't want to take it in to show the Verizon tech, so I got on Verizon Live Chat, they are mailing me a NanoSim. Also ordered a Nano to MicroSim adapter off Amazon so I can switch between phones if I want.
And yes I know I could have cut my MicroSim down, but figured I'd be safe and wait 2 days for a new sim.

I thought of a few ways to upgrade while keeping unlimited data.
There was..
Add a new line, with the GS3, give that phone to the unlimited data, and then put a basic phone on that line so it doesn't require the data fees...
There's buy a used cracked screen on eBay, replace the cracked screen with a replacement on eBay..
Any ideas anyone?
I would suggest against buying any used phone, especially for verizon phones, only because of the risk that if the person selling it has any remaining balance on that account that the phone was tied to, it would be useless for you and by law Verizon will be unable to add it to your phone line. If you can confirm that it in fact has no left over balance, then this is probably the best way to go.
Better off going with the plan of adding a line with a basic phone and switching the two numbers, but that will cost you another 40$ every bill and verizon will probably still make you pay an arm and a leg for the SGS III essentially at full retail price if you really want to keep that unlimited data plan. So you might as well just pay full price for the phone and then just switch your number to it in order to keep the unlimited data plan.
Hope this helps.

If I get the GS3 on the extra line and I switch a basic phone onto it, wouldn't it be just 10 dollars a month?
That's basically what I did to keep my unlimited data. Added a line for the GS3, switched it to my line with unlimited data and activated a basic phone I had lying around onto the new line.

How much a month is it for that line? 10 dollars?
Well I have 2 lines that had an upgrade on the same day. Mine had unlimited data, and the other one was my moms who had no data at all. So what we did was use my upgrade to upgrade her line to a sgs3 with 2gb of data a month , then put that phone on my line and put the basic phone back on her line. Then she upgraded with her updrage to a sgs3 for herself

I have a question about this. Does the new use of a SIM card change what you're saying about left over fees owed to Verizon? If a person were to buy a phone from Ebay and put their own SIM in would that be Ok even if the original owner owed money on their SIM?
All I did was order online. I originally went into the store to upgrade, but they told me I had to get a new data plan. I went home and ordered the GS3 online that night and it let me keep my unlimited plan. They probably fixed that glitch by now though.

With the new SIM card system that Verizon has started to use, I am not quite sure about that, but when reading past experiences, and one that my cousin had to go through, they all bought used phones from online sites like ebay and amazon, but ended up being unable to apply them to their own plans because of a check that was done on the phone's background. (I know there is a way to do this yourself, but you pretty much have to have the phone in your possession in order to do so.)
When my family had to add a new line to our family plan for my little brother, a basic phone, verizon wanted to charge us $40, and instead we got him a smartphone which was only $30. Verizon is really pushing smartphones, primarily android devices and especially the SGS3. Essentially what they tried to sell us, but we told them no lol.

yep or you can use one of the following online service to check the IMEI/MEID, Verizon's is the more accurate one, if it says call customer service then the IMEI is bad:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/estore/certifieddevice/cd
http://www.checkesnfree.com/
I upgraded a flip phone line on my plan to the SG3 and gave it 2gb data temporarily. I then had them switch the SG3 to my number, re-enable the flip phone on the upgraded line, and then cancel the 2gb data plan, reverting it back to $10 nondata plan. Verizon will not charge for a data plan that is changed within 24 hours. Worked for me anyhow, but did have to pay the $30 upgrade fee.

Broke my S3, and would like to upgrade to the Moto X. Unfortunately, I have the unlimited data upgrade. Our family plan has 5 lines. 1 unlimited smart, 1 tiered smart, and 3 dumb phones. I've searched and heard NUMEROUS stories on how to keep unlimited data, and read comments from people about how none of those work. I figured the XDA folks may be a bit more knowledgeable than some other forums, so I'm trying my hand here. I've heard a few different ways to do it:
1. Transfer my upgrade through myverizon to a dumb line and then upgrade. (Verizon alone has given me about 4 different answers on if this would void my UDP)
2. Find a retailer that would work things around and keep my UDP. (Found a guy, verizonchris, on a different site that said he could do this for me most likely, but he needs my billing password. Naturally, Im reluctant to give it out)
3. Transfer upgrade on myverizon, go to a store and get a upgrade voucher for motomaker, then upgrade through motomaker and it will keep my UDP.
I've heard of some others, as I'm sure you guys have, and am really just looking for some sort of verification for this from some smart peeps!
(Sidenote, I'm also going to claim the S3 on Asurion. Does anyone know what Asurion is giving people for broken vzw S3's? Heard a few different things, maybe an upgrade through that would be possible?)
Thanks!

Thanks, trying to avoid that.
Sounds like you may be overthinking this, or something has changed that I'm not aware of.
You can't do anything with the upgrade available on your unlimited line. If you do, this will most likely reset your line to tiered data.
The upgrade would need to be on the dumb phone line.
You would upgrade that dumb phone's line to the phone you want.
When the phone comes, call up Verizon and activate the new phone on your line.
Double check with Verizon that the data plan will not activate on the dumb phone's line.
Enjoy your new phone with unlimited data! Too bad the person who uses that dumb phone won't have an upgrade for another couple years.
If other lines on the account have upgrades available all you will need to do is update using one of the other updates. The line yoy used for the upgrade will now have a 2gb plan but you don't activate with that line. Just put your SIM in and you will still have your UNLIMITED DATA. Hope this helped.

The 'new every two' was discontinued 2 years ago. The reason you get a new subsidized phone price is because you're re-entering into a contract with verizon... so it's like it's a new contract/line. You don't have credits and there's nothing to transfer, but if your contract is up, you can get the 'new' price. Unless you have unlimited data... you do that and they'll move you to a 'share everything' plan.
I've been told Costco will generally eat the cost of the phone, just to sell you one at the 'new' price and get the credit for your business. You keep the unlimited data and Verizon thinks you paid full retail. I can't confirm that plan will work for you, but many here have said that's worked for them.
Personally, I'm in the EDGE program. Pay $16-30/month more for a new device, keep my unlimited data and every 12 months, get to pick a new device. Yes, you're paying $200-360 for the phone, but A- that's not much more than the 'new' price', B- you get to keep unlimited data, C- you get a new phone every 1 year, rather than 2 years with re-entering a contract and D- you were probably going to pay that much for a phone off eBay anyway if you have unlimited data. Dunno if that makes sense for someone with so many lines, but if you keep it to 1-2 lines and really need that data (like I do), then it makes perfect fiscal sense.

That's a huge flaw in Best Buy's system if it works. Because the purchase of the new phone requires a re-entry into contract and VZ specifically has blocks on subsidized phone prices on grandfathered data plans. Not even GMs in Verizon stores can override it... I've tried.
So basically, you're placing a 3rd party order and because Best Buy can't send you a live sim card (only VZ can), you swap it for your current one and VZ is never the wiser. Clever, but tread lightly and quickly.. I can't imagine this flaw will remain open for long.

Just a quick update for everyone:
I couldn't update because of my talk plan. Since I claimed my broken screen through Asurion, I talked them into making a "one-time" exception and sending me a brand new S4 instead of another S3.
I'm selling the S4 and buying a Moto X. They told me they're in and out of them. I convinced them to send me a new S4 (as a "one time" exception because of my great history).

I have tried, and failed, to figure out how to order the M8 on Verizon's web site without a plan so as to retain my unlimited. I called customer service and that rep couldn't figure it out either. Since the coupon codes only work online, I was wondering if anyone has been successful in ordering a no-contract phone online and it actually processing as no-contract. Even if you click no contract on the order (to get a 599 price), it seems to take you to choose plan, and if you then delete the plan, you delete the phone.
Anyone have with any success?

I also tried doing this yesterday, but couldn't figure out how. I ultimately just went to the store lol.. good luck though, hopefully you find a way to do it!
It works fine for me. You should get a pop asking whether you want to upgrade or add a device, you want to upgrade since that is the only way you can keep your plan. You will then be taken back to the screen to select whether you want the contract price or non contract price...Continue on and you should be good to go. At the review stage you will see nothing changed regarding your plan (unless you chose to do so). I didn't actually do this because I'm probably just going to swing over to the store and pick one up, however I was one button away from doing so.
Talking to Verizon reps is usually a waste of time. If you are smart enough to have made it to this forum, you surely already know more than they do.
My plan is sweet as F*** by the way, 44.95 for unlimited everything except phone which is 25 cents per minute. Considering I usually use between 15-75 minutes a month it's a steal. Let's see how many decades I can ride this out?

I've tried three times now to order at full retail to keep my unlimited. When I tell it I want to upgrade it tells me that my unlimited data is no longer available, and I have to choose another data package. This wasn't the case if I recall the last time I got a device at retail so I don't know. I was hoping to order it for pickup so I wouldn't have to stand in line for an hour since most of the stores here seem to have 1-2 employees at any given time, but guess if I want it (and want to pick it up, versus getting shipped), that's about the only option.

I've been trying all morning again to order, and it keeps telling me I have to give up unlimited data. I tried to order any other device and THOSE allow me to retain my unlimited, so idk if this is something tied to the M8 or what. I wanted to order it online and use the 50.00 off coupon that was posted here, but now that's not even working.

Seconded - it says the M8 is incompatible with the current plan.

I was hoping to order it for pickup so I wouldn't have to stand in line for an hour since most of the stores here seem to have 1-2 employees at any given time, but guess if I want it (and want to pick it up, versus getting shipped), that's about the only option.

I don't know what to tell you man, works for me. Maybe certain plans are affected differently. Good luck.
Edit: Are you guys coming from an iPhone by any chance? Some old iPhone plans aren't able to be upgraded if I remember correctly.
Yeah just go to swappa

Yeah, that one works, but won't let you use a coupon or the option for in store pickup -- I wanted to save a bit, and have it today.
I did the buy one get with another family member who had unlimited account and that one went down to 6gigs. Not sure if that's helpful but I don't doubt that 6 is plenty for most people.

Not for me. Internet choices are very limited here, so my phone has become my modem/router.

Just got my pre-ordered S5 in the mail (FedEx)
I paid full retail price in order to keep my unlimited plan and stay off contract.
CAUTION!
Check the receipt/paperwork that comes with your new phone.
On the pre-order website, I had confirmation that I would be keeping my unlimited data plan, but the paperwork said that upon activation they'd switch me to a $30/month 2GB plan!
I called *611 for customer service, got right in touch with a lovely CSR, and she was able to manually activate my new phone and keep my data plan unlimited (after verifying I paid full price and had no contract).
She said that if I didn't call, and it automatically switched, then I would have had 14 days to correct the mistake, and it would have been a lengthy process.
(Disclaimer: my old phone is still backing up, and the new one is not on yet, so I cannot confirm this yet. Will post an update when I have confirmation.)
Hope this information helps some of you.

If you are buying a phone at full price, Why didn't you wait for the Dev edition? It will be out pretty quick and it will have an unlocked bootloader. That's what I did with the S4 and I never looked back.
That's what i plan on doing if I do decide to get one. I'm pretty content thus far with the m8.. Time will tell I guess

The M8 looks good however I am not a fan of the metal case, Mostly for reception reasons. Besides I always throw my phones in an otterbox and I never see the case.
If you use the old sim and don't use the new sim they send you, you should be good.
Verizon is a sneaky bastard....
Just use the old sim. Verizon did the same thing with the S4. I used old sim and nothing changed.

I have both. M8 is really spectacular. No issues with reception and where I live, I know if it's lacking.

Pre-Ordered a week ago. Only heard about the dev edition yesterday morning. Badly needed new phone (old one was on the fritz).
If the dev edition comes out within 30 days, I'll exchange it. I'm also not 100% sure I'm staying with Verizon. Might switch to TMobile.

Doesn't work if you want to buy the Dev edition with an unlocked bootloader
Verizon is being sneaky as ****. I think it had to do with the new "SIM". Fortunately my plan started intact and I have a ticket already opened with Verizon that guarantees such if they screw up.

Just bought my VZ GS5 at Best Buy this morning. I saw this offer on the Cotsco website and talked to the BB manager. They agreed to price match this offer by taking $100 off the phone. I coupled that with the $50 upgrade credit I registered with BB for in February and walked out with a $50 SG5.

Thanks for that update.... How were you lucky enough to get yours delivered on the 11th?
The nice Verizon CSR said no shipments would be released until the 11th... Mine would already by here except no Saturday delivery in the rural boonies of northern Oklahoma.
I took the 2 year contract extension. Been a satisfied Verizon customer for 15 years, all the family is on my contract, don't see ever leaving them as long as Verizon keeps making me happy. Every CSR that I have worked with has either been able to take care of me, or shot me up the line to a supervisor who could deliver the goods.
This GS5 that arrive tmw, Monday 4/14 should be a nice upgrade from my Galaxy S Verizon Fascinate.
I'm one of the lucky few with a dumb phone on my plan. I just went to the store early on Friday and upgraded my wife's line - but activated on mine. They took care of me - as far as I know this is the one easy loophole still available to us with unlimited data plans.

I did the same thing. I used my dummy phone to upgrade to the S5, then took my sim from my S4 and switched them. I then called vzw to put my dummy phone back on. I also took the advise of someone on here and got best buy to give me the phone for $99. SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!!! (I will be happier when we have root!)

I doesn't matter if its a dumb phone or not. You can use the loophole on a smart phone, as long as its a tiered data plan and not uld

Ok, I have a razr hd, rooted. Like a fool I took the update that locked the bootloader. Now I'm wanting to get a new phone that I can unlock the bootloader. I'm finally bored with the razr, want something that I can really play with. So what I'm asking is which phone to purchase, that I can unlock and root. It needs to be of good quality, I'm a union operator so I'm always in the dirt and mud, which i give kudos to Motorola. Good quality....so what does everyone recommend... I'm on verizion with unlimited data. So the hot spot hack is a plus.... Thanks

Well, here's the thing. You better not subsidize your phone through Verizon. Once you do that, you will lose your unlimited data plan as they will force you to the share everything plan. No way around that IF you purchased your upgrade via Verizon.
If you purchase your phone at full price, or get it via eBay or something like that, then you will keep your unlimited data plan, at least, that's how it's been for the past year or so.
You're best bet it to find a developer edition of a phone (such as one for the RAZR HD). Those allow unlocking of the bootloader from the box.
The HTC M8 is another one that allows unlocking of the bootloader.
Be forwared, the HTC M8 on verizon is $750. That's the price you pay for wanting a phone that can have the bootloader unlocked.
Also, if you go the upgrade route, you will lose unlimited data but then you will have tethering for free, but it will eat up your data plan based on how much you get (2gb, 4gb, etc).

I think what I'll do is add a line for like 9.00 then just transfer that line to my phone. I've added and upgraded my lines before, without loosing my data.... I was also looking at that m8, just wanted to get an expert opinion on that. Which I'm thankful you recommended. From what I read, looks like there is limitless possibilities with that phone. Thanks again.

Well, that's how you can bypass it one way, but then you're paying an extra $9 a month for that line PLUS I believe another $30/month fee for the smartphone. That's in addition to your current line for your current smartphone.
After two years, that's $936 and that's not including all the other fees + taxes they charge per month! Plus, you are then no longer stuck in another 2-year contract with them.
Cheaper to just purchase the phone outright if you ask me. That's what I did with my RAZR MAXX that I had before the RAZR HD. In fact, I just purchased it off of eBay for about $200.

I was looking on eBay and saw one M8 going for $500 on buy it now, saw some unlocked 925 and 926's for around $200.
I promise you that you can unlock and S-off the VZW M8, even after the latest OTA. I updated my phone out of the box and was able to unlock and S-off with the methods posted in Verizon M8 forum on here.?
