[Q] Flashing apk files from recovery - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just tried flashing some inverted app zips in recovery, and they succeeded in breaking my phone. I flashed Dropbox, Play Store, Google Music, Google Calendar, and Hangouts. I foolishly didn't take a backup beforehand. Now my phone boots and I can enter my pattern to unlock it, but the home screen is solid black with the three buttons at the bottom. I periodically get messages that app X or Y has closed (typically Newsstand and Google Opinion Rewards).
I've acquired the original apk files, but I cannot install them--I receive an error to the effect that no program was found to handle the file. How can I install the stock apk files again? I tried coming up with a flashable zip but it's over my head. I can't uninstall anything from either Settings or the Play Store; Settings crashes and the Play Store just says "Uninstalling..." forever.
The files I flashed came from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494145
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

those zips that had the inverted apps in it... can't you put stock apks there and flash that?

I did attempt that, but the zips don't just contain apk files--they run scripts that replace various resources and whatnot; I wasn't entirely sure what was going on. The files I flashed are in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494145

He is now.

I'm more interested in what exactly he initially flashed (ROM, GApps package and so on) so it's easier to get his phone back to where it was [emoji14]

How to flash google apps after rooting droid

I just installed cyanogenmod's 5.0.7.1. I realized that all the google stock apps are missing and I was trying to install them back. I've been sitting here for hours trying to figure out how to flash the damn zip file.
I wanted the apps back so I can get the market back to download apps back.
Also I haven't been able to sync any accounts for my contact list. Is this because I don't have the google apps installed?
Thanks
I downloaded the files from
http ://pic-e-bank.com/droid/droid-files
All you should need to do is flash the zip file from recovery. With the htc dream we always flash the ROM and then the google apps zip files from recovery. Here is where you find the guide on how to do it. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Droid_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
thanks a bunch!!! i was wondering why i couldn't open the gapps download from my home screen. once in recovery, it worked. woot woooot.!

[Q] Flash ONLY Market

Hello. I'm thinking of re-installing some rom which doesn't have the gapps pre-installed. Thing is, I want to INSTALL ONLY THE MARKET. I tried pushing the apk into system/app/ but it won't load the app.
Does anyone know how to flash only the market?
How about using the Amazon market?

The flashable gapps doesn't only contain the Google apps. Also contains the services needed. Download the flashable gapps, and delete with 7zip or whatever software the apps that you are SURE you don't want, like for example gmail. The apk's you don't know what they are, keep them because they are needed (Google services). I don't remember the names now but I can take a look if you want to. Then flash it.

What kind of errors? I understand you have CM7, right?
I will upload the CM7 gapps only with market in some minutes and you try it.
EDIT: Added GApps with only Market and required things for CM7 Gingerbread! If you use CM6 Froyo tell me. It's not signed now, but from what I remember you can flash it anyway. If not, sign it or tell me.

What device do you have?
I got an HTC Magic. Running Diet Gingerbead. Was running CM7 1 month ago.
Flashing this file works on this rom or only for CM7?
Oh, the zip file doesnt work. It says verification failed.

[Q] YouTube OFF?

Hi Guys,
Every ROM I flash I try to Freeze/Uninstall and remove from Boot Many, the YouTube App.
I don;t use it ever, but even if it says freezed successfully it still comes back after reboot.
What's so special about it and will it creat a problem if I delete it and main question is how?
Thank you

In my other android device experience, Nook Color / Simple Touch, YouTube is instrumental in the Google Apps authentication process. For instance to get market working on nooted versions of those devices you had to sign into YouTube first.
Why are you trying to get rid of it?

Never used it, if I need to I can view it in the brother. Just another app that loads up on boot and sits there using the battery

Fair enough. Why don't you give it a try? Make a nandroid backup and then delete the file via ADB in recovery mode (or move it to /data/local/tmp for easy restore). Clear Cache / Dalvik reboot and see if anything isn't working properly.
I would say you can delete via ADB in ICS but many people, myself included, are having issues mounting /system in ICS. It could be possible that this failure for /system to consistently mount could be why TiBu isn't freezing it properly.
Use root uninstaller, its how I have removed all system apps since my gb 2.3.1 days on my x10. A very effective method
Thank you for responces.
The proper way I found would be to transfer it to a User App and uninstall.

I use 7zip. open the archive and delete it, or add whatever .apk you desire. I always do this before I even flash a rom. Winrar should work fine, though.

[REQ] Stock 4.4 emailgoogle and exchange2google APK and ODEX files

I installed the modified email and exchange APKs to get around the PIN security without backing them up, bad move. Now I can't sideload the 4.4.2 OTA until I flash back to stock or put the stock email and exchange files back in system/apps. If someone would be so kind to post those files for me it would be greatly appreciated. :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

No need to do any deleting.
Just delete the account from your phone, and then go into the app and delete the data and cache. That worked for me. The other thing you could do is just delete the EmailGoogle and Exchange APK's from your phone.
The new install with load the brand new versions. Then you will need to download the updated versions for 4.4.2 and you'll be all set.

Thanks for the thoughts but I tried that. Currently have the email and exchange apps removed and it still fails when flashing 4.2.2 OTA. From what I've read on the OTA Help Desk all the standard APKs need to be exactly as stock or it fails (which it does). From that OP:
Section C: Let’s get back to stock
You have two options to do this:
Option #1 Flash the KRT16M stock image. Follow @abaaaabbbb63 guide if you need help.
If you want to keep data intact flash only the boot.img, system.img, and recovery.img (optional)
OR
Option #2 Replace the stock images or .apk(s) you removed or modified.
Note: These must be the exact versions that shipped with the rom.

if youre rooted, just get titanium backup. the pro version will allow you to perform batch operations and freeze apps instead of uninstalling them

I used Titanium backup to uninstall some applications (I was careful not to uninstall system applications) but when I restarted it I crashed in the logo.
I do not know what to do now.

the google and gmail apps are used for authenticating the user. remove those apps and you remove the OS's ability to recognize a user. from there, it will just crash because it basically doesnt know what to do with the holes in the code created by removing those apps

Which applications can definitely not be erased, yet causing a system malfunction that renders it unusable to the point of having to flash rom stock again?

is that a question or statement?
if it is a question, i would advise not uninstalling anything that is included in your phone and google related for the most part. Of course you can remove hangouts, calendar, calculator, gallery blah blah blah, but its never a good idea to uninstall the email application that google uses for authentication on the phone itself.
from what you listed, if any one thing in that list caused your issue, its removing gmail

factory reset. also, delete the folder on the internal storage called "android". That folder contains app information and isnt formatted during a flash via TWRP or even in Odin. Itll cause app crashes left and right. Delete the folder from within the file manager in TWRP, reboot to download mode, flash whatever firmware youre wanting on it via Odin, let it boot, reboot to stock recovery, factory reset (at least once. i always do it 3 times, and no, im not kidding), reboot and it should be fine from there. The problem youre facing has been experienced by countless people over the years and phones. Ive seen issues VERY similar to this over the last 8+ years, and this is always the easiest fix for it

Do you know if the Samsung Connect app can be deleted?
Two applications are not working properly, due to root, they are: Healt and the safe folder, have any idea what to do?
You can remove apps without root using adb. I dont have any email app or google search on my s6 and no problems
