I've seen many articles describe how back in the day you could make a Gizmo5 account and tie it to your google voice account and thereby make free calls using google voice. I've looked around for a bit for a solution that doesn't require Gizmo5 but haven't found anything as of now. I've seen some mentions of using at least in part SIPgate and SIPdroid but, from what I understand, if you can get that to work it only solves the issue of incoming calls. Does anyone have a current and complete method (preferably from start to finish) to set up something like this?
You can accomplish this by using Google Voice, IPKall, PBXes.org (or a similar service) and an app like GVCallback plus whichever SIP app you'd like to use (I like CSIP). There are tutorials out there, Google is your friend. A little too involved for me to go into detail at the moment but it's possible and it does work once setup properly. Basically: setup an account with PBXes.org, get telco # from IPKall (that forwards to your PBXes.org account). Next you setup Google Voice to forward to your IPKall #. At this point you'll be able to receive calls to your GV # but not dial out. To call out, setup GVCallback. Now when you dial-out, Google Voice will ring your phone first, you answer - then GV rings the # you dialed and connects the call - for free.
Just keep in mind, if you use too much bandwidth, PBXes.org will cut you off unless you upgrade to a premium account. Hope that helps.

there are free sip providers without that limitation... a quick google search should turn up a ton of them.
If you're inside US, Google Voice will be the best answer. Or you can also use Skype or Fring with very low rate.

even if you're outside the US, you can get a free number from ipkall to use with google voice and get free calling to the US and canada and low rates (about the same as skype or fring) to anywhere else.
Is there any way to get visual voicemail On a Thunderbolt running das bamf 2.0-5?

yes there is a working version, it uses the official vzw visual voicemail app and not integrated like in froyo but i cant seem to find the apk again for it. i got it somewhere in one of the massive bamfGB and bamfGBremix forums a while back
If you have the apk on the phone can you upload?
Look in your system files?

I use Youmail. It's a free vvm on Amazon's app store. I like it better because you can set up custom ringers for people and stuff.

can someone please explain why you want to PAY to use vvm when there are so many free services out there? namely google voice? i just cant understand why people want to throw their money away....

one reason i like to use the vzw app is i know if i say forget my phone or my battery is dead i can still call and check my voicemail from any phone i want. Not sure but i wouldnt think google voice would have that capability, if my understanding is correct when it normally sends the call to voicemail it instead sends the caller to your google voice instead so it would not be on the vzw server for checking from other phones.

yup absolutely. you get a visual list of voicemails within the google voice app, just like vvm. press play and you get your message. it also transcribes the message for you so you can READ your voicemail

you CAN check from other phones. thats another great thing google voice does for FREE. all you do is call your google voice number from any phone, enter your pin, and there are your messages stop paying verizon pleeeeease. can do everything for free. any more questions?
Don't forget you can check your VM online as well. Comes in handy in a pinch.

This thread is very interesting since users of an android phone do not know how insanely good Google voice is. The amount of customizing options is just pure insanity. Can have certain greetings for certain numbers, special one only for your wife. Can setup groups, work greeting, friends greeting, etc.
You can even break in to the call and listen live while someone leaves you a voicemail, and the break in and answer as they were recording.
You can record your calls.
Unknown numbers can be screened so they have to state their name before your phone rings then you hear their name when you answer the call.
Its pure insanity, and someone would rather use the Verizon version? Teehee's...

google voice, which is FREE, beats out ANY pay service. i guess enjoy wasting your money you people who are stuck in your ways X_X. i wish i had enough extra money a month to set on fire... us that post good things about gvoice are just trying to help you all save cash, but if you want to spend for no reason, then by all means, spend.
Why isn't there a hack for VVM? and why does vzw charge for it? I'd like to like my Google exposure and not use G. Voice. Is there a native option?

absolutely. you dont have to use any minutes to check your voicemail if you dont want to. you use the Google Voice app. it uses data.
edit: actually, i think i originally misunderstood. i think it will still use minutes when the call is forwarded to google. but if the person only leaves a short message, should only use 1 minute. but thats only for someone leaving a voicemail. sending txts and checking your voicemail is done with data.
first, of course, you need to sign up for a google voice account. i forget if its invite-only still or not..just check google.com/voice. after you have an account, see this faq for instructions on setting google voicemail as the default for your phone.

The above is a manual for free voice calls over data connection. Only problem works only for US based users since you need a Google voice account available only to US based users.
Wonder if Google voice account use or only creation is limited to US? I expect you should be able to ise it worldwide if you can get around the initial geographic creation limitations. Any ideas on this?

I get free voice using Google Voice and Groove IP. I can make calls out, but yet haven't figured a way to receive them.

I use groove IP as well and it works great. In order to receive calls you need to log onto your google voice account and forward the number to google chat. After that you will be able to make and receive calls.
Latest Overcome on T-Mobile
So any suggestions on how to get a google voice account considering I am not in the US???
As a far shot I tried using market enabler to fake T-Mobile and Verizon as providers but as expected it didnt work.
Hi guys. I was looking through XDA and internet to find any Android APP that gives you ,,VIRTUAL US NUMBER" so that we who are outside US can use Google Voice as well. My main point is need for virtual number to make it US Google Number so I can recieve calls throw Voice, and to make it free for people who are calling me through Gmail / Google Voice.
Does anyone know for some kind of app that provides it?

Hi, I'm looking for an app that would allow me to use my secondary Google Voice number .. I hope this question is in the right place.
I searched Google and found only few posts where something like this was asked and no real answers there.
I am currently using GVoice with Sprint integration so the android Google voice app is being used by my sprint number and that takes the option of even signing out of the app away. What I need is a second app to let me sign in with my other Google Voice account and able to text and maybe make calls as well? but mostly I need it for the SMS.
I believe I can use grooveIP to make and receive VoIP calls with Gvoice.. but GrooveIP doesn't have SMS.
I know there are other options for SMS such as Pinger, TextMe, TextPlus and many more and I did try those three but none of them as good as Google voice and one reason is they don't give permanent number they will delete it if not used for 30 days and that's a problem for me.. also they don't save history but only for few days or weeks where with Gvoice my history is there however long I want to keep it.
I hope I made what I'm looking for clear
