[REVIEW] MPJ 8200 mAh Extended Battery - Galaxy S 5 Accessories

I was contacted by MPJ Battery to see if I was interested in doing a real-world , unbiased review of their 8200 mAh battery for the Galaxy S5. I figured why not? Couldn't hurt, plus I love trying new things!
Here's what came in the package:

The back cover is actually a VERY dark brown, but looks black in all but the brightest lighting. It looked suprisingly good instead of the blue back cover that came with my phone , and contrasted nicely with the blue front bezel. FAIR WARNING - The battery cover isn't waterproof , doesn't have NFC functionality (I could be wrong - I personally DO NOT use NFC), and pretty much doubles the thickness of your phone, while at the same time has a nice rubbery feel and feels good in your hand. I carry my phone in my pocket every day and this didn't make it too big to carry in pocket.
The battery is marked 8200 mAh just as it should.
Why would you want a battery like this? Well, me myself, I recently attended the FETC (Future Educational Technology Conference) in Orlando. My cell signal was miserable, and I was away from a charger for 8-10 hours at a time. This battery would have come in handy for such an occasion!
Another example - one of my work locations is like working inside of a lead box when you go inside - unless you stand with the phone in your left hand, facing 12 degrees from west, while applying your weight only to your middle toe and pinky toe on your right foot, while holding your head at a 32 degree list to port, you're not going to get a signal! With my regular OEM battery I'm lucky to have enough to last 6 hours inside this building. Again - having this battery would be awesome at that work site!
I gave the battery a full charge the first night then unplugged it and let the games begin. Yes, I know you're supposed to cycle the battery a few times to get the optimal results, but honestly, who does that??? Sure, you might wait to do benchmarking after those first few full cycles, but this is REAL WORLD testing, not a controlled environment. Most people will buy it and start using it on day one - hence me doing the same thing !
I used the phone exactly as I usually would - Gmail, work emails, work phone calls, Spotify music via Bluetooth while in car, WiFi while at home and in the office (where available), and of course, calls to/from my wife
Down to the nitty gritty....
So here's the stats:
First run -
Second run -
Thoughts:
No complaints so far, unless you're going to charge this battery from a non-USB3 port on your PC - then be prepared to wait a long while! Charges easily overnight though using your OEM charger.
Do I believe this is a full 8200 mAh ? Not sure - the only sure-fire way to know for sure without some testing equipment being used in a controlled environment that I just don't have, but it's AWESOME to get more than 2 full days off the charger without having to worry about carrying a charger or plugging in at night.! My usual day starts with unplugging at 5:30AM, and ends with my crashing at around 9:30PM Even with good signal and using my phone the same way with the OEM battery , I usually end the day with about 20 to 30% left.
TO BE FAIR TO MPJ Battery - I don't think I've yet to see the full potential of the battery ! I believe the life will only get better after a few more cycles - only time will tell with that though. I'll post an update after I use it a bit more.
Should you buy it? I personally would. I'm not going to use it every day, but I do have definite times and places that I'll sacrifice a little bulk for having the juice that I need! I live in Florida - hurricane alley ! During hurricane season it's always a good thing to have one or two of these charged up and ready to go should your area get hit!
All in all, I'm say it's worth the money they are asking for it. Here's a link to their website should you be interested in buying!

really awesome review, danke!

@JWhipple nice review.
i would like to make a few questions.
first of all the specific batery is it also for s5 g900h?
does the cover has protection from water and dust as official samsung's cover has?
and final, for daily use is it good?
i was thinking to replace offcial battery for ever and place the specific u have reviewed.
ty in advance

It should work for any GS5. Mine is an S5 G900A... The i9600 mentioned on the battery is the international version of the S5. All S5's should use the same sized battery.
The battery cover I don't believe would have as much protection as the original Samsung battery, HOWEVER, it does fit PERFECTLY. I can't say though that it would provide a water-tight seal.
Yes, VERY good for daily use!

You would just need to be careful not to get it went like we did
before there were waterproof phones.
Your cover will not fit unless it's made for an extended battery.

i ordered one of these batteries. i ordered it in June 2014, and i still have not recieved it. i emailed them and no response. i think its just someone trying to scam us out of our money.

You should keep trying, and just because you had a less than positive experience doesn't mean everyone else would.

Huge improvement over my galaxy S5! I am a really really heavy user and now generally run 1.5 days between charges.

2400mAh Battery for O2 Xda Diamond /HTC Touch Diamond

Hi, i was looking for some big, but not ugly battery and i found this one
http://cgi.ebay.pl/2400mAh-BATTERY-...399|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318#ebayphotohosting
the photo quality is bad, but it looks cool, also comments are quite good.
Anyone has this batt to give an opinion?
Greets
i thing that this battry make problem to the gps radio
i bought it already, so in some time ill write little reviev
Just came across this post and bought one too. Hope the battery cover is the same one that is displayed in the listing. I'll post again after I receive it and use it for a few days.
How did you go with the battery, Im interested as well if the back cover is as per the picture
I bought from this eBay seller before earlier..the back cover will not looks the same as eBay auction. I bought with the intention of getting the "ori" look cover too, but turn out dissapointment!
What I received is like a very typical China plastic cover, all black with the color spray looks very cheapo. The battery does last for a long time, appx 2.5 days with my unlimited data line with auto emails checking each 15 mins.
GPS not working for my case. Not sure about the rest.
Still waiting!
I'm still waiting for the battery to arrive. It's always a bit of a risk buying on E-Bay. I don't mind if the battery cover isn't perfect. I just want a battery that lasts a lot longer than the one I have and a cover that doesn't look like a box is sticking off the back of it! LOL
Will report back if I ever receive the darn thing.
Arrived Yesterday
It make Diamond BIG, case is diffrent but its not so ugly as i thought, and diamond is easier to hold now (for me). And it lasts VERY LONG also, i turned on wifi, bt, cod2 in background and movie with sound for 3h and i lost meabe 20%
whole review for battery can be these 3 words- BIG and VERY STRONG.
Case is simmilar to normal diamond's but it is like 3x fatter and it has ugly hole for camera (stairs like).

Well, I can live with a bigger case just so long as it doesn't have that awful ugly sticking out box thing. yuck! But I keep coming across posts about the effects the battery has on the GPS (it doesn't work for some people) and it's making me a bit nervous. (I've got TomTom 6 working and I'm really happy with it.) I wish the damn thing would just get here so I can try it out.
I will definitely post and let everyone know whether the GPS works or not and exactly where I bought it from. (I think I got the link from the first post in this thread.) I'm guessing it might have something to do with exactly the kind/brand of battery you are using.
Anyway, as usual, I'm babbling on a bit so I'll post back as soon as it arrives.

Hello,
I bought 2000mAh Mugen battery, and I can confirm that I'm having problems with GPS. In best case 3-4 sattelites can be found after long time, but no GPS Fix. In most time there are no GPS signal !!!
The only good thing that it lasts for very long time.
Hello everybody,
I had buy the Battary but this Battary is not good. When you use the battary, then is the GPS verry bad.
luckily, you can get car charger and use old battery
Can anyone post photo's of the actual product? The ebay or other pics i've seen around are not very clear. Thank you!

The battery arrived this morning from Hong Kong and NOT the UK, as the listing claims. GRRRRRRRRRR!!! That really, really ticks me off! I don't mind Hong Kong sellers but the fact is that shipping takes FOREVER although surprisingly, this one was just over a week. If the item had been in the UK as they claim, it should have only taken a couple of days to get to me. I bought it using the link from the first post in this thread.
It seems OK so far but there is absolutely NO GPS reception at all. This is only slightly inconvenient for me as I don't use TomTom every day so I can always pop the original battery back in whenever I need to use the GPS.
Also, one of the previous posts had said how HUGE the battery was and they weren't kidding! LOL The picture in the listing is definitely NOT what they are advertising and makes the battery back look about half of it's actual size. Another thing that ticks me off!!!
Anyway, here are some pictures of the actual battery cover. I had to use my phone to take the photos so I was unable to take a picture of the phone with the back on it but it still gives you an idea of what it will look like. And, yes it looks like it's been spray painted. LOL
On the plus side, it makes it a LOT easier to hold the phone which is great for me.
Overall, I don't think the appearance is absolutely hideous as I normally lay the phone face up anyway so other than the size it's ok. Also, if the battery life is as good as the last extended battery (which I had for my Hermes), I will be happy with it.
Well, that was just a humble newbie's opinion. LOL If anyone wants me to check for anything else or if you want some better pictures with my good camera, let me know and I'll do my best to help out.

Just noticed something else
This is weird! I just noticed that although I don't have any GPS reception, the phone signal is stronger than it has ever been inside the house. This is normally a problem because where we live is in a lower (dipped kind of valley like) area.
This is a big plus for me although it may or may not have anything to do with the battery. Coincidence maybe? I've never, ever had good reception here, though. Hmmmmmm.....
Hmm, good battery for girls (or boys!) with bags.... not great for pockets though.
Yes, that's true. Even when I do have a pocket to carry it in, I try to avoid it for fear of squishing/breaking it! LOL (I am sooooo careful with this one because I wanted one so badly and I would not be a happy camper if I broke it.)
One other thing I should mention (that I forgot about in my other post) is that the battery cover doesn't lock on quite as tightly as the original one. I don't think it's going to fall off or anything but I had to fiddle with it a bit just to make sure it was slotting into place properly.
I would be more worried about the unsightly bulge!

My New Desktop Dock

So I decided to go through the pain of 10 days plus delivery from Hong Kong and ordered this off eBay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....46602&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_1849wt_1137
And it is really really nice.
The phone sits securely and has a slot on the back for my second battery.
Certainly worth the £11 I paid for it. The only downside is that it does not take the phone with the case still on but to be fair I don't think any of them do.

Where does the cable plug in?
Edit: Disregard my question. I've just looked at the item on Ebay and see that it is a lot deeper than it appears in your pictures. They make it look quite flat as you cannot see the tapered bottom part.
Looks OK though

I have used the ones that take AA batteries before. Apart from the limited capacity, they are also quite heavy and sometimes struggle to actually charge the phone (rechargeable AA batteries are 1.2 volts so 4 will only reach 4.8 volts output where the phone is looking for 5volts plus)
I wanted something lightweight, and not too bulky and that would fit inside my jacket pocket. I looked at loads of these things before I bought this one and they ranged in cost, size, weight and capacity. Some had 5000aH but were big and heavy. The really light ones however did not have enough capacity for a recharge of the Desires battery.
This thing gives me 2500Ah (the Desire has a 1400aH battery) and weighs 88g so has enough juice to recharge the battery at least once from flat in a day if not half again. It was £29 from Scan (Amazon have them as well)
Unfortunately I have no choice but £30 is not too bad.
In the morning for example, I will leave my house at 6:30am and not get home again until 10pm. I will be using my phone constantly with push mail, calls, facebook, twitter, Wordpress etc.I will not be carrying any briefcase or a bag so am limited to what I can fit in my suit pocket. The luxury of tapping mains power is not there
My last phone could not do a day like that on a single charge and the Desire will be down to 30% by lunchtime (less than a third of the way through my day)
So I have the power pack and a spare battery as well and these can all fit in my suit jacket pocket without adding too much bulk

Not everyday (thank goodness) but if I am working in London (a couple of days a week) then it takes me 2.5 hours to get in and 2.5 hours to get out again so add that to 9 to 5 and a drink with the team or a customer before I get back on the train and you get the idea.
The good news is that a smartphone means I don't need to carry around a laptop everywhere. The bad news is that with the Desire, I need lots of spare power
Does it charge with 1000mA like the original HTC power connector, or only 500mA (like the most usb-cables)?
Thanks,

Actually I am not sure it is even charging at 500mA which is the reason that particular one is sitting back in it's box waiting for an RMA number
There are some out there that claim 700 or even 950 (I will be trying the latter just as soon as Amazon can deliver).
This dock looks pretty nice. Might be tempted by it if I get a spare battery in the future with it.

You may have noticed in the picture that I have already taken that route.
Indeed tomorrow now that the battery pack is being returned I will be leaving the house at 6:30 with a fully charged phone and a fully charged second battery and nothing else.
But if 1 battery lasts until lunchtime (6 hours) then the second will last until about 7pm but I don't get home until 10!!!
A 3rd battery?
I think I need one of those battery belts that pro photographers use but that would be silly
I think I just want to have my cake and eat it. I want to watch videos on the train (if I can ever get the encoding right) or listen to music, I want to actually use my device to the full and don't want to start switching off features. After all I paid the best part of £400 for this thing, not using it would be daft.
I just need to work out the right solution. On my last phone (a HTC S740) a 2nd battery was more than enough but on this one I think I just need a bit of time to work out what works.
[slightly off topic] you could try one of these bad boys, I've not got one myself but I've read good reviews. Also 3400mah is just under 2.5 recharges, which might save you taking the extra battery

I just took the red wrapper off of it and it fit snuggly
In terms of weight, does it change much? I'm thinking about picking up this battery if it's a drop-in replacement.
I just purchased, thanks.
Well, it's certainly cheap so might as well give it a try. I highly doubt it's even close to 1800mAh but hopefully it'll be more than 1300mAh and won't die after 50 cycles.
i wouldnt trust it since it from china, they been known to switch out label
Can you let us know what the battery life is like, compared to your normal battery, please? I am interested, but have heard too many tales of batteries that promise more but in fact deliver less. It would be great if this gave even 25% more over the standard battery!
Here's some independent testing that shows a lot of manufacturers claims aren't always that true:

thanks for the preview pic, on how to modify the battery. I purchased a battery for $5.98 USD! Cant wait to test it out.
Just curious but did you have your internet on the entire time you were doing the test run? I normally turn off my internet and activate it when needed, when I do that battery life for me is about 20 something hours, with mild usage (gaming and phone calling).
any more updates?
I just bought one. I will update you guys when i get it.
I ordered one. Wth for 8 bucks
From my permarooted overclocked HTC G2 with cyanogen 7 nightly via XDA app
I bought one from mugen site and it is awesome althought it is a little bit pricey but i think it worth. I charge it over night. Unplug it at 7 am and carry with me untill 10pm. My wireless was on the whole time. I have 3 email setup as default. Running sense ui so i believe there is some process running at the back ground. I only make about 30 min to 1 hour call. At 10 pm, i still have 35% life.

Same problem here. If u take the red wrapper off i dont think it matters because the black plastic cheap outlined housing is the problem. I think i wasted 8 bucks
From my permarooted 1209mhz G2 with CM7 nightly 6
Yeah, I've taken the entire thing apart (piecemealed it together) now and while the cover will fit it still bulges out because the battery itself is a tad too thick.
It was a cheap experiment though so I'm not choked. The lesson here is that Incredible/Evo batteries don't fit our phones =(

What Power Skin Is?
Power Skin is a battery case company for all kinds of Phones to the iPhone, Samsungs, HTC and BlackBerry.
They go for around $80-50 But with a Coupon Code you can get a 20% OFF your Case.
Now What is a Battery Case You Say?
Well its like a second battery for your phone or a portable charger. The downside is it adds about 8mm more thickness to your phone,
its a soft/hard case because some of it is soft but the battery part is hard, It protects your phone and charges it
Whats so Special About this Battery Case?
Well some battery cases dont have a on/off switch which means it charges phones when you don't even need it to be charged,
and since its always on sometimes taking off the case of the other companies, will waste power slowly,
because its sending power but some of the charges become weaker and weaker and then boom 1% lost.
Ya it may not seem like a lot but leaving a case on for like 12 hours it could lose around 10%-15% battery you could have used on your phone.
Do I (ME) have a case?
Yes all of my phones i have a bought a case, there great for our android phones.
Why should i even buy one of these?
Dont tell me you havent been at home or something and your phone dies and all you need to do is send one important message or call,
but guess what your phone is died well turn on your PowerSkin and boom more power, Thats why!
How Long do they last?
This is the question i get asked by friends and random people, Well you really cant say but with a Battery Case at 100%,
Well its 250 Hours on Stand By, But again thats tested on a brand new just out of the box no background apps or
anything running in the background, And About 280 Mins talk time
I love U!
Well that's cool....
What does this Thing look like?
They sell them so far in all black with blue lights on the back to notify you on the battery, here are some pictures.
What should i Do Now?
Well Click the THANKS BUTTON!
Then..... decided if you want to buy this or not
COUPON CODE!
POWERUP2
And again because look at some kid go crazy and say "I BOUGHT THIS AND YOU BROCK MY PHONE"
I am here just to notify and give you knowledge about this not to force you to buy this or anything like that, or somehow break your phone?
not really a fan of these.
copped one and it made my phone extremely hot.
It looks like carrying a fully charged extra battery would take up less room in my pocket than one of these giant cases.

ugh. i hate when people BROCK my phone.
The only way I'd get this is if they they made a car attachment/clip for the OEM car adapter.
I actually just bought one of these. it doesn't seem to make my phone any hotter and its great for when your someone who uses your phone as a mp3/video player (like i do, kills the battery)

I actually ordered mine yesterday with 2 day shipping People complain that makes the phone way thicker but the way I see it this phone is so thin and light that when holding it for awhile watching a video or something is kinda uncomfortable for my hands so the extra thickness and weight would be a good thing for me. How long does the battery last you? Also is it contantly charging your phone or it has a button like the "mophie battery pack" for the iPhone that allows to charge whenever you please
well i haven't actually checked how much it makes it last but it adds about 3 hours to your battery life and yea the extra thickness and weight is good for me as i have big hands so this phone feels even lighter in my hands
I bought one of these, and quite frankly it's not worth the extra bulk.
The GS4G looks awesome, but with the PowerSkin it just looks nasty.
Yes, it was helpful in adding about 30% battery to my phone but that's about it, sadly.
The amount it charged wasn't that beneficial to me.
30% more battery is not worth the bulk to me. the sleekness of this phone is just too nice and with all of the help from the amazing devs and modders, i want it looking as nice as it runs. instead of a powerskin, why not look into juice defender? one member posted 50+ hours from using it and it almost doubled my sister's vibrant battery life (1.78x normal).
edit: great find, btw, iTzAlienX. dont mean to take away from your post. just another option.

JuiceDefender has some awesome reviews.
Probably worth a shot.
And about the powerskin, it had a nice smooth texture, but the fact that it was silicone meant that it would attract pocket fuzz, and also "stick" to your pocket while taking it out.
Still not worth it, take it from a two month owner...or so
The guy at the T-Mobile store said these cases work with a power mat. Any confirmation from you guys that own them?

I'd highly doubt that compatibility. Either way, nothing was noted in the manual which was included with the case.

MPJ 4300mAh extended battery mini review

Picked up this MPJ out off their website for $17.99 because I CANNOT find it on Amazon.
WHERE I BUY
A backup battery means a lot to me as my Galaxy S5 is running many apps, even though battery life on this phone is already an impressive part. Just received mine with a small bag, unwrapped and put it in. It seems a little larger than stock battery, ensuring a snug fit.
The 2800mAh to 4300mAh bump isn’t there for sure but there is still some increase. I’ll update soon after 2-3 times charging cycles.

After I fully charged it 3 times, it seemed to do great. This is my moderate to quite heavily day yesterday. With almost same usages (no auto brightness, average web browsing, bunch of streaming videos, texting, calling and etc.), stock downs to 20-30% by the time I went to bed and the new battery I'm at about 45%.
EDIT: Do not expect seeing any dramatic changes. Normally improving 10-15%, and there are several times, depending on my usages, where it up to 15%-20%.
6+ hrs on screen is my best by far and this is including 4-5 hrs of idle and light/moderate using, and only 1-2 hrs of heavy browsing, texting, etc. Have been also skeptical and hesitated about whether to pick up this without many reviews but on second thought, I can be the first and share my experience if that’s a real good. YMMV, I am not thinking about if they are spending money on promoting the well-knowness for their company, as far as I can tell, it is working fine on MY GS5.

wondering the same thing. This battery doesn't seem too expensive.
I'm really interested in a real capacity test of this battery

It shouldn't seeing how it can use the original back.
I also to would like to see the stats on this baby because of the no extra bulk.
where did you get it?
I was about to post about this same battery! I ordered it on Amazon for about $5. I hope it is better than the stock battery! Here's a link if interested.

Interested to see how this battery works For long term use. Wonder if it effects the phone any?
Oh sweet, Thank you! =)
These batteries don't hold quite the charge the OEM batteries do, but it'll last a good 8 hours. I ordered a pair of these batteries and I'll see how long they last (Hyperion batteries have a good track record with my phones).

Nope, so I bought 3 of them. at 6 dollars a piece, and no shipping, even if i get one thats semi-decent it's better than no spare are all and I was making my way through a battery and a half per day on my S4.
*UPDATE*
4300 mHa Battery
I'm a very heavy user of my smartphone. When i had my Galaxy S4 i was going through a battery and a half per day. When i saw these batteries i thought i'd give them a try. I though 6 bucks, each, bought 3 of them for the hell of it. So in the old phrase of you get what you pay for is absolutely true in this case.
These batteries even say "Long Lasting High Capacity Li-ion battery" and are a 4300mAh battery, where the stock is 2800mAh. So in theory these batteries are 45% bigger than stock and should give me relatively 45% more time in operation of my smartphone on a single charge.
What it has given me is a great deal less. My S5 on the OEM battery would last from when i unplugged it at 6am to usually 5:30 or 6 at night before I hit the 30% alert. I just checked and my phone is currently 4H 50M 06S in and I am down to 38%. This battery as it sits is a complete waste of money.
Now as they were only 6 bucks each I did buy 3 so I will try the other two over the next couple days but if they are the same, then my suggestion is do not buy this product.
I just went with this one. Guess we'll see. I'll update a couple weeks after it gets here. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JIL7C5S/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Makes sense, yes After all, no matter how advanced the phone is: the more advanced, the more battery eats.
Hum... I don't know if this battery i sreally a 4300mah...
Someone test the battery recently ?
I'm using this "brand" ( well, these printed labels ) since the S1 series.
They may not be the full 3800Mah capacity, but they always give me a full day of operation ( depending on the use offcourse )
I'm not able to test the capacity-claims ( because I don't know how )
All I know is the length of operation.
On the S2 and Note1 the power was slightly smaller, my order is coming in a few days
Will report back

I can't wait for ZeroLemon to release theirs. It was worth every millimeter of extra hugeness on my S4.
