Here's something for you devs. How bout an app that can hide apps that are in the app drawer. (the tool bar at the bottom). Because right now if someone was to want to hold my phone they could get right into my email, pics, astro, bank account, market, anything! You know what I mean? if we had an app that puts those icons inside of it then that would be a good start. You could call it Drawer Mod or something like that.
Sure they could get to them from the application set up option, but thats not so easy to figure out. First someone could work on that, then they can work on a password lock feature for it or something. I'd pass my phone around more freely if I had a little more privacy than just the pattern lock. (that can be bypassed if you know how anyway). Is it a good idea?
No. Either don't hand your phone out or use pattern lock. If I could use your phone I would dial long distance out of spite.
I been looking for something like this but for a different reason Its cramped lol, I just want to be able to organize the apps in folders or something my games clutter everything. May add password protect to certain folders

Wow you're just awesome!!! Yeah you can sooo borrow my phone and call all the long distance you want. If you gotta call then call. lol I didn't think generosity could be misguided into hate like that. Go back to your cave hermit! What's your problem?
Now back on topic with civilized people.

Folders would be good.. it gets a bit cluttered in there.
Hmm actually displaying folders might be difficult but as for hiding apps I think the easiest way would be to effectively move them to a hidden folder on the phone... using shell commands someone could accomplish this... consider these shell commands
Hide an app
Code:
mv /data/app/APPNAME.apk /hidden/
Run an app
Code:
mv /hidden/APPNAME.apk /data/app/
*figure out some command to run the apk*
*figure out how to wait for app to die*
mv /data/app/APPNAME.apk /hidden/
Make the icon of the app be a folder and the interface copied directly from the app drawer and it might actually act like a folder
Nice! So it's feasable. Now all we need is for someone to apply the info above into an easy to use app, or I learn how to be a pro with terminal commands. lol
yeah i really need that app. in my rokr e6 there was a menu where you could pick different user setups Games:Office:and Custom you could put watever you wanted inthem

That is a nice find! Now there's a visual. Would really make the phone less cluttered and more like a desktop. I wonder if its coming to the phone version of android. Anyone up for making a set up based on that?
Based on the appearance of alternate home apps, some with multiple app drawers, Id say someone will do this eventually.
yea i dont know if its just me.. but i wish that there was more editing and revamping of the normal apps.... like browser/messaging/dialpad/contacts the default. I would like to download replacements for them... not steel/acontacts/chompsms (not saying they arent good cause I use the last two) But with Ahome replacing my home screen.. its not replacing it.. its on top of it. I think everything would work alot better if we just focus on editing the normal features instead of having like 20 differnt versions of contacts browsers and all that.
I hope im understood I sometimes have an issue typing my complicating thoughts.
Me too! This is an app or mod that i have been waiting for. I've been using Advanced launcher with my dounut roms. But now with eclair, it wont run. Im not so much worried about adding folder to the app drawer, but more into hiding useless icons to clean things up a little bit. Do i really need 6 different icon pack icons? when they come up as needed anyways. whats the point in icons for apps that are primarily widgets? PLEASE! SOMEBODY! create an app or a mod that allows me to do this. I would pay for it!!!!

in case i loose my phone i bought App Protector:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-carrotapp-protectpronew-Attn.aspx
You can define apps which are password or lock pattern protected. This app has to be excluded from a task killer of course. I also protected market, root explorer and terminal.
There is another free app (ad supported) which does the same but only with a password. no lock patter (the lock pattern was the reason i bought app protector).

I'm pretty sure about 6-8 months ago there was an alternative launcher on these forums that had app hiding as a feature. I think it was discontinued quite a while ago, but yeah not only is it possible, but someone's already done it.

Don't go ask AndersWeb, he's already on record about implementing it (in summary, "no", though offering a patch might convince him otherwise.)
And yeah, Advanced Launcher is much more than two months old. At least since August 2009 (when I showed up), probably earlier.
Vault
theres an app called "Vault" that hides the applications in your app drawer
you need root to use it though.
i use it to hide the sms app
then use handcent....so i can blacklist certain senders ......obviously i also have certain adult 3g apps hidden as well
advanced launcher is the only thing i can think of, too. works pretty well on donut roms, i just wish someone would port that functionality into a 2.1 rom.
the ADW/almostnexus launcher that most devs are throwing into their builds now has some of the same functions as advanced launcher (drag n drop uninstall, compressed columns/rows) but no app hiding, which is a real bummer.
this was done almost a year ago
Download panda home app has had an option to hide the apps in your app drawer for almost a year. also to make customer slide out drawers in your homescreen. if i remember, long tap on the home screen then go into the drawer option, it works remarkable well actually.
Sometimes when we read pdf books or surf on the internet at night in the dark environment, the while background make us uncomfortable. Of course we may use screen filter but it lowers the light and make the words unclear. So is there any app that can invert screen color like ios does? I think android need such app too.
RenderFX widget on cyanogen roms or (I believe) chainfire3D does this.
Cm's widget seems only to add another color on the screen as a filter but never reverse all the color.
Hey, I'm looking for exactly the same thing! It would be quite a good battery saver for the AMOLED screen on my Captivate.
If someone makes/finds an app that can do that, then it would be totally awesome!
-Mike
I'd really like this as well. Can anyone recommend an app?
Thread Revive!
I would be a happy willing customer of an app that can invert the colors of the display- like PowerStrip on Windows. I surely don't know of one though.
Total Screen Control just adds colored filters.
I don't believe this is that easy.
Probably would require more than just an app, i.e. a custom kernel.
Some apps like google+, google voice, market 3.4.4, google music 4.1.5.12 can be found themed for more battery on rujelus22 homepage!
rujelus22.com/evo/
please thanks if you like
I very much want this, too! I just found this thread searching for such an app. Not only would it be great for night time viewing and amoled power savings, but it would also provide some wear leveling/un-burn-in effects for the notification bar, keyboards, etc.! Say you use the inverted mode 50% of the time, it would completely counter burn-in from the other 50%.
Please, someone, do it and I'll pay handsomely. I'll pitch in $20 to a bounty, anyways.
It should be almost as easy as CyanogenMod's render effects or Chainfire 3D's night mode. If they can take each pixel's intended color, calculate that minus green and blue, and output the result, they should be able to take the color, calculate the inverse, and output that, instead. I'm not a programmer, though, so I may be off base.

that only overlay the color. the bright background still bright which become glaring at high.
I search on Google play and found a few theme that does seem to invert the color but require root and special ROM that can do the invert.
i will have a try, thanks

Hi.
I have tried two To-Do apps. Both run in the background and use lots of memory. They also run at startup.
I am looking for a simple app to write a few things on it ("register for class", "buy milk"), stuff like that, which DON"T run in the back (don't need it).
Any suggestions?
THANKS

Have you tried status reminder? I like it, and it's super light.
Couldn't find in market, but I think I got it from this website somewhere... think it was mentioned on the portal. A Google search will guide you .
I use Astrid but that runs in the background. There was an app I tried that I was really impressed with and the only reason I went back to Astrid was because it was a little too light. I needed better reminders and such. It's called Any.DO. Here's a link to it the market. Very nice interface which you don't always get with lighter apps.
Why not use just a Text Editor. I use Jota Text Editor.

When you take a screenshot, you're taken to a little app that allows you to annotate and share/save/discard your screenshot. Pretty handy.
What is this app, and how can I access it without taking a screenshot? For example, I'd like to be able to launch it from the gallery to mark up a photo, but the only option seems to be PS touch (which has terrible palm rejection), or Skitch (ditto).
Clearly the app exists... so why can't I use it whenever I want?

It's wierd the way screenshots are managed. If you take a screenshot using the soft key it goes directly to the gallery and skips the editing tool you're describing. Choosing edit from the menu in the gallery sends it to PS. If you take a screenshot with the pen the sceenshot appears along with the annotation and editing tools. But that's your only chance to edit it without having to send it to another app. Why it works that way is a good question.

I have discovered that if you long press on the soft key, it also goes to the editing tool.
Also not ideal but is a workaround due to us not being able to bring up the editing app at will; what you can do is take a screen shot of the picture that you want to annotate and then carry out any necessary edits you wish to do on the picture . The original picture can then be deleted if it is not required.
Did nother know that one. Thanks.

I have a follow-up question here. I am new to Note 10.1, and my device is on JellyBean 4.1.2, the latest USA OTA update, WiFi-only.
My problem is that after taking a screenshot with S Pen and annotating it, there is NO direct "Share" button on the screen. The only option seems to be Cancel or Done at the upper-right corner, with Done saves to folder in the Gallery, so I have to again go into Gallery again and share from there in order to shared the annotated screenshot.
I saw a video taken on Note II phone that there is a Share button at the bottom of the annotation screen, and press it would save the editing and bring up the normal share list of application.
Am I missing something here?
thanks,
I want to use the S-Note and Lecture Notes apps for school and they both work quite well, however, I'm having one major problem--the MENU and BACK buttons are driving me nuts (especially the MENU/SETTINGS seeing as how LN has the option to stop the BACK button without being a root user). Every time I lift my hand even a little the menu button pop up (I'm right-handed and the menu is on the right-hand side).
I would be willing to just move that bottom taskbar to the top of my device--can't be done unless you're rooter; I'd be willing to disable them while using certain programs--can't be done unless you're rooted (LN actually has that option but you have to be rooted).
I will not use ANYTHING else--I'm am not a tablet power-user and will never be one--I have a custom-built gaming rig and every imaginable console/multimedia device at home--I don't care to use my tablet for anything except taking notes and reading my PDF's (for which I use eZPDF with no issues whatsoever).
I'm on Android 4.1.2 BTW--any ideas? Thanks in advance.
It's the very same reason I rooted mine. The difference it makes to lecture notes is fantastic.

That's a good question as well. Also, if rooted does that mean that I can no longer update using official channels (Samsung)?
Also, is it realistically possible to mess up the rooting if I don't plan on putting many apps on/removing apps when I'm done. It's my understanding that the rooting process is not what people usually have issues with but rather removal/addition of apps AFTER the rooting is complete.
Any links to an accurate guide (I have 4.1.2 Jelly Bean BTW) would be appreciated.

I use Rotation Lock Adaptive (Free) in reverse portrait mode, to turn my display upside down and that puts the buttons at the top of the Note 2 and thus out of the way. BTW I am not rooted but I do use Nova. Rotation Lock Adaptive (Free) works with TouchWiz also.

Thanks for the advice--maybe I'm missing something but the app still opens upside down...?
I'm quite surprised that they didn't think of either offering the option of disabling the menu presses in a writing app or moving the taskbar to the top.
I just decided to root--went fine--the only thing is whenever I use Lecture Notes with the SU access (blocking the menu taskbar) it takes my wallpaper away. The tablet has it as long as I don't use LN with the block taskbar option enabled.
I rooted for the explicit purpose of using multiwindow on every app.
@ZenTheShogun:
I've used that option several times, but it has never happened to me. Maybe try asking in the Lecture Notes thread if anyone else has that issue?
Thanks--I will.
I was always able to use multi-screen on all programs--maybe because the day I purchased it I updated the OS to JB 4.1.2. The only app I was unable to use in multi-screen (and still can't) is Jotter (I don't care LN is far superior IMO).

GMD Gesture Control?
Or so I was told. Haven't tried it yet because the Lecture Notes option to gray out the taskbar works well (and it's literally all I wanted).

That's a normal glitch according to the developer (see the lecture notes app thread in the note 10.1 themes and apps section). Apparently after JB 4.0 anytime, you disable/hide the task bar it removes your wallpaper. This goes for all apps that disable the task bar. It's just a bug in JB. If you use a live wallpaper, your wallpaper will survive the hiding task bar. It's only an issue with non-live still wallpapers.
Do live wallpapers waste battery at a faster rate?
Also, is there a faster alternative to eZPDF? I'm finding the page turning a little slow--I only use it for PDF's (textbooks)--I'm not big on annotating (engineering doesn't require much) so I just want a solid PDF app that is quick to respond to page-turns.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah a live wallpaper will use a bit more battery life. However with the Note 10.1's already very lengthy battery life, I haven't noticed much of a decrease at all. It's really minimal, at least with the ASUS wallpaper I'm using. I haven't been able to tell the difference between live and still wallpapers. On my nexus 4 with it's more limited battery life, the difference is a bit more noticeable but even then it's only decreased by about 1 hour overall. I honestly can't tell any difference though on the Note but I haven't done any very deliberate/defined tests to measure.
You could try Moon Reader. That's what I use when I don't plan on annotating much. Lecture Notes is really good in case you do decide to annotate. Both will do pdfs but moon reader also does a bunch of other formats.
Yeah--I don't think I can use LN for both though--I keep my problem sets open in a PDF reader and do the actual problems on LN--I was leaning towards Mantano--many have said it's quite good for just reading PDF's (and I'm assuming since I'm a root user I will be able to use it in multi-screen).
