[Q] Bad battery life - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I have bad battery life since I got my OPO. I tried to change the battery, but nothing helped. I am getting between 2.5-3 SOT, in moderate use. (A little bit of browsing, no videos or music or even phone calls). I bearly use the phone and I have to charge it twice a day. Brightness was decreased to minimum.
I am on cm11 44s
Usually, the screen is taking the most of the battery, but since yesterday, Android OS is sucking my battery.
What can be the reason and what can be done?
Thank you

Your mobile signal is weak that might be causing the battery drain Try wakelock detector app if rooted to get more details.

Hi
Yes, my signal is weak at home, but most of the day, I am out, so this is not the reason.
My phone is not rooted.
Do you have any other suggestion what to do?

It's probably a combination of your weak signal and Google Play Services eating your battery. You can halt Google Play Services using this method:

Thanks, I changed it according to your guide, and we will see if it helps....

Try dropping down to 3g if you use LTE and see if your signal level improves and helps also. Otherwise use timmaaa guide and extrapolate the info and stop other apps from causing unnecessary wakeup and keep awake wake locks. Facebook and Facebook messenger cause lots for some reason. If you turn that off you still get notifications etc but it prevents it from staying awake too long after the notification
I just used Facebook as an example, go thru the various sections of app ops to apply to other apps. Try to keep system apps as is except the ones outlined in the guide

[Q] Is this considered abnormal battery drain?

I have been using my N5 for a couple of weeks and I know its battery life isn't the greatest. I have watched some youtube videos for tips on better battery life, and here's what I have done.
Turn off auto brightness, and screen brightness is about 1/4 of the way
Turn off haptic feedback
Turn off vibration on keypress
Turn off sync for most Google services
Turn off NFC
Location service set to battery saving mode
But it seems like after all that's been done, the battery is still draining pretty fast. For example, I went out for dinner and drinks with friends and my phone is just sitting in my pocket the whole time not being used, 4 hours later, I have lost 30% battery. Coming from an htc one, it doesn't drain nearly as much. Is this abnormal or just about right for the N5, thoughts?

7.5%/hr is high for standby time. You can get it down to 1-2%/hr by using more of the battery-saving tips you'll find in the various threads on the subject.

Check the wakelock with better battery stat
If you don't need GPS on all the time turn that off too saves quite a bit of battery even the battery saving mode isn't that battery friendly

You really need to share your battery usage screen, and show what apps drained your battery. It is possible that you were had low signal strength, and so your phone kept trying to search for a signal and drained itself. Also, as dark_ente suggested, look at betterbatterystats results to see if you had wakelocks.
With no active use, that is very high drain - unless you were in a very low signal strength area, or had an app keeping your phone awake.
When I work from home, connected to WiFi, my phone drains about 3-4% in about 9 hours (assuming I don't actively use it. I use pushbullet to show me all notifications on my PC, so I don't have to turn my phone on at all)

Turn off auto brightness, and screen brightness is about 1/4 of the way - I do the same (actually, I set it to the lowest possible level), because it is too bright
Turn off haptic feedback - I do the same, because it is annoying
Turn off vibration on keypress - I do the same, because it is annoying
Turn off sync for most Google services - I leave sync on
Turn off NFC - I leave it on
Location service set to battery saving mode - I do the same - but set up a tasker profile to enable GPS when I launch maps - Disabling GPS helped the most in my case

When you say turning off GPS and only enable it while launching maps, do you mean turn off location completely? Does that affect other Google apps/services? Such as Google now
If all else fails, do a factory reset.

I noticed from the past few days that my N5 seems to have abnormal battery usage pattern. There are days with mostly light use (text messaging, whatsapp messaging, some web browsing, minimal on screen time) I can go for 2 days without charging, and I am only losing 1% battery per hour when it's in stand by. However, they are times (see attachment) when I didn't use my phone for 11 hours, and the battery level is down from fully charged to 26%. Can anyone give me some ideas on what may be the culprit?

you need 'better battery stats' log. . . stock battery screen tells you almost nothing

No. I keep location enabled all the time, but in battery saver mode - that way, google now, weather widgets etc can get my approximate location (using cell tower triangulation), but can't activate my GPS for accurate location fix.
When I use maps/navigation (which in my case is the only time when I need accurate GPS location fix), I change from battery saving location to the GPS type location fix, and when I'm done with maps/nav, I switch back to battery saving location.
If you turned location off completely, google now, and possibly other apps (like weather widgets for current location) won't work.

From your 2nd screen print, you can see that your phone was awake pretty often. As @Enddo wrote, betterbatterystats should help you figure out what is causing the wakelocks.

I am still pretty new to Android and I don't know how to root my phone. I did check out betterbatterystats on google play, it says the app doesn't work on non-rooted Android phone running kitkat, that's why I haven't installed it yet. It seems that kitkat made some changes which prevent battery usage apps from working properly, wake lock detector also won't work on non-rooted phones running kitkat

While betterbatterystats will work on kitkat (unrooted), it won't give you partial wakelock summary That requires root)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15869904&postcount=3 - see FAQ 1 and 3. You can download the kitkat compatible version from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
As PhilipTD wrote, rooting a N5 is pretty easy, but if you don't feel comfortable doing it, don't.
If you decide to root, follow the steps in first post at the link that PhilipTD provided.
Note that Step 1 (unlocking bootloader) will wipe out all your data.
Before you root, why not disable GPS (keep location active) and see if that helps? Also, how often do you reboot your phone?

[Q] Please Help ! Android System Battery Drain on Nexus 5 after KitKat 4.4.2 update

Hi,
The battery life of my Nexus 5 has taken a dramatic hit since the 4.4.2 update. I think the culprit is Android System but the GSAM battery graph seems to suggest that the culprit is Android OS kernel. My Nexus 5 is on 4.4.2, unrooted, stock ROM and the build no. is KOT49H.
In short, my phone does not seem to have a wakelock issue but I can't verify because 4.4 does not allow wakelock access without root. It sleeps fine at night and in daytime when it is not in use. I only lose around 5% or less overnight with 2x battery turning off the data connection and only turning on data connection once every night. The problem is the Android System which drains at least 17% (sometimes 25%) of battery everyday and routinely sits on top my of battery usage chart with or without me actually using the phone. My usage per charge is typically around 6-7 hours with around 1 hour 45 minutes screen on time. I had extraordinary battery life before the update to 4.4.2 (lasting more than 1 day with over 3 or 4 hours screen on time). Now my battery life is completely shot. The battery graphs attached already represent one of the better days. Some days the Android system will drain at 25% or more. You will note my phone relatively slept fine without draining at night in the first 7 or 8 hours and then the battery drain started to take a nose dive after I woke up. I feel that whenever I start using the phone (with the screen being turned on), the battery drain will occur. My observations are as follows:
1. I use LTE but the reception at my home and work for LTE is not good so the radio jumps between LTE and H+ from time to time however I do not think the radio jumping contributes that much to the drain. The drain stays the same even when I am at a place with good LTE reception. I use wifi at home but i cannot connect to wifi at work (which sadly is another issue). The wifi is always off unless i use it at home. I do NOT have wifi scanning in the settings. I have wifi battery optimization on. I never use bluetooth.
2. My google now is off. My location setting is completely off with no location reporting etc..
3. My Google + auto back up is off. I do not use Facebook, Facebook messenger, Instagram, snapchat etc. I mostly use Feedly, Whatsapp, Gmails and look at stock quotes every day. I seldom take pictures, videos or listen to music.
4. I only have one widget dashclock widget. I have removed feedly and stock quote widgets from the home screen but they don't seem to affect my battery usage that much.
5. I use Automateit but only have a few rules such as setting vibrate on weekdays etc.. I do not have any profiles which are related to GPS or location which i understand would drain battery. I also use Dynamic Notification, Light Flow, Lux, Nova Launcher, Notification Toggle and the memory in general is always below 65% in the background. I also use 2x battery to save battery which is set at switching off data after I turn off the screen and it will only turn data in the background every 10 minutes.
6. I have tried safe mode and 9 out of 10 times the Android system drain remains the same. The only way to lower the Android system drain (albeit temporary) is when I turn off the phone and plug it in for a charge, then turn it on when it is full and still plugged in. After I unplug it, the Android System drain will lower to say 7 or 8 % but it will slowly creep back up to 20% within an hour or so.
7. The CPU usage overlay routinely has 9 + readings on the top when the screen is turned on (but with no app running). I think it means very high CPU usage.
8. I do not think Feedly is causing any problems. I deleted the app and the drain remains. I also do not think GSAM is that useful as pointed out by another member here. It points to one app. You delete that app and then the drain remains it will point to something else.
9. I have been using Greenify (non-root) but it does not seem to help with my battery drain as the drain might be caused by system apps or processes within the OS.
I don't know what else to do and this problem has been troubling me for more than 1 month now. Please help !
Update on 24/2/2014:
I have given up and factory reset my phone. After I reset my phone, the apps were installed via Google Play automatically. I also switched to ART. It was fine initially for at least one day. The apps were there but I did not use or enable most of them as I wanted to transfer all my data and tweaked the settings in one goal. I mostly just used Feedly, Whatsapp and Maps for navigation. Even with Maps and high accuracy GPS on, the Android System would go below 10% even though it would temporarily increase to say above 20% during navigation. This morning, I thought the battery seemed ok so I enabled Lux, Dynamic Notifications, Lightflow, Automateit, Nova Launcher and restore the settings to most of the apps.
The Android System drain came back within 2 hours and hit 25% of the total battery drain. My phone's battery dropped from 100% to 40 % in less than 5 hours and the screen on time was only around 1 hour! I never did any battery intensive actions. The most was turning on the phone to check my battery and whatsapped less than 10 messages back and forth ! Since the drain re-appeared, I have turned off completely the location setting, Google Now, sync for Google Plus, auto-backup for Google Plus. I have removed all widgets and disabled Dynamic Notifications, Nova Launcher, Light Flow, Lux. The drain still remains the same at 23% or more.
This is driving me absolutely crazy and I am sick and tired of spending so much time and energy on sorting out the cause for drain (and to no avail!) I spent a lot more time on trying to fix the phone than really utilizing the phone for my benefit !! I just sent an email to the Google tech support and hope they will help instead of sending me generic self-help sheet. Thanks all for listening and trying to help. I am just really disappointed with Google this time.

Thanks for your reply. My N5 is not rooted so I do not have access to wakelock stats anymore.
I have removed Feedly but the android system drain persists.
Not a lot that can be done without knowing the cause. Consider factory reset?

I am hoping I don have to resort to factory reset and can wait for the 4.4.3 update but I guess my patience is running out.
Thanks for your help.
My missus' LG-P880 has exactly the same problem. Just started happening one day. It seems to be wakelock locator alarms according to bbs but there doesn't appear to be any reason for it. Its been driving me mad too. Luckily tho she's rooted so using app opps i disabled Google services location and it's kinda helped

Did you try another kernel ? When I changed to franco kernel, my battery life is better.
having weak LTE signal kills the battery but it should not be this bad.
Maybe you should try a factory reset and see if the problem still persist, if not then you have an rogue app somewhere.
You can use the process of elimination.
Start with disabling Dynamic notifications and Light flow as those have high potential for battery drain.

I had this same problem the other night. Get app ops starter from the play store. In there turn location off in Google play services and android system. Note, this may impact other apps. I don't use any that I need location for so it works for me.

I had a similar issue as well. For me I turned off a couple things and it really helped:
1. Turned off Cerberus, I believe checking location too often or incorrectly or something.
2. Turned off Account sync for Play Newstand. Noticed when a sync would occur, it would hang on Newstand for much too long which I think was waking device and keeping device awake during it's long syncs. Everything else would only take a min or two total.
3. Set G+ photo sync to only sync when on wifi and charging.
4. Removed Yahoo Weather app. Noticed yahoo weather app staying alive a lot too.
5. Removed Whatsapp. Probably unnecessary really, but any of those messaging/weather/location apps that I don't use often (if ever) I removed to make sure they weren't checking location in the background.
So far, I'm at 78% battery today when I would have been at around 30-40% usually, so that combo has made a huge difference.
It's going to be different for everyone I think, but basically just make sure you don't have any excess apps checking location in the background. And at least for me there seems to be something wrong with Play Newsstand sync hanging for long periods of time.
Yea... Even i had the same issues... Latest version killes ma deep sleep mode nd also some of a rules disappeared....
I was having similar issues and was able to narrow it down to syncing Google Services...
I found that often times Google Drive would get hung up when syncing in the background and chew up my battery.
What Google Services do you have set to auto-sync? I would narrow it down to the ones you only really need to have synced in the background and have the others sync up for you when you open them.
Also, in regards to your LTE/H+ signal, have you tried to flash another radio to see if there is any improvement? A poor signal can have a pretty significant impact on battery life as well.
Lastly, as mentioned by another user, Better Battery Stats, though requiring root, will make it a lot easier to track down the culprit of the issue if it indeed a rogue app somewhere.
Try different keyboard. I've a suspicion that latest Google Keyboard is the culprit.
I was having some unexplainable with BBS (no locks, etc.) battery drain. Which can only be resolved (though temporarily) with reboot.
So, I installed alternative keyboard (Swype in my case) and using it. So far, second day I don't have battery drain.
Update
Please refer to the OP for update. Thanks all.
battery after reset
After a second factory reset, I did not install a lot of the apps which I suspect have something to do with my drain - including Swype, Dynamic Notifications, Nova Launcher, LightFlow, Task Manager, 2x battery, Lux, Notification Toggle, Dash Clock, Automateit. I have also set my location to device only with no location history and history. I have also disabled Google Now. I have not restored my photos, music and videos to the phone yet. I have disabled sync for Google Plus, Google Drive etc.. I have also disabled auto back up for Google Plus. I am on ART.
The battery life (with around 25 % left) was around 6 hours 30 minutes or a bit more but with close to 2 hours 40 minutes screen on time. The screen was the biggest draw. Android system comes in second with around 13%. This is obviously better than before where I managed to squeeze maybe a hour or 30 minutes more but with 2x battery turned on in the background. I mostly used the phone for battery checking, whatsapp, Feedly, web surfing. I played games for around 20 minutes. I was not on wifi most of the time. Is this battery performance normal?
Thanks in advance.

I have reset the phone three times. After the third attempt, the battery drain for Android System would go back up to 20% plus. By the test of elimination, I thought I narrowed down the possible culprit to Light Flow and Dynamic Notifications. I uninstalled both of them but the battery drain remained 20% plus.
Google was willing to replace my device. I asked them whether the battery drain is likely a hardware or a software issue or a combination of both. They said (to my surprise) it is hardware issue. It seems they have come across quite a number of similar cases. I always thought it was a bug within 4.4.2 or in the google apps such as Google Play Services etc. and could be fixed by a patch or something. The phone also means a lot to me as it was a gift from my gf. I just don't want to go through the hassle of replacing the device if it is a software problem but I guess I am running out of choices unless I decide to wait for the update. What do you guys think?
It's definitely not a hardware issue. If you Google it there's threads all over the place with all different makes and models of phones having the same problem and no one can figure out why, apart from it definitely seems something to do with Google services (GmsCore.apk)
Your best option is to root your phone and use app ops and turn location access off for every app that doesn't need it. (pretty much everything apart from maps and weather apps)

So, I've been battling idle drain battery problems for a while now . I was unable to make much progress because I did not have visibility into partial wakelocks on the system . So I did what any inquisitive person would, I rooted my phone. Bye bye warranty.
Now that I have root, I am able to see the partial wakelocks in better battery stats. To my partial surprise , I do not see any substantial partial wakelocks that would explain the significant battery drain at night. I have good cellular signal, and wifi signal where the phone is placed.
Any clues?
Almost 25 percent in 9 hours. Also notice the lack of activity between successive awake blips, and the constant battery drain that occurs between them. Before I even got root and was able to look at the partial wakelocks, I had already suspected that there were no wakelocks going on but yet the battery was draining.

Below are screenshots from the stock battery app showing the top battery drainers and the details of the major ones.
By the way, I would attribute approximately 6 percent of the battery drain due to the screens. I have quite a bit of data that suggests at the brightness levels I was using the screen for those 30 minutes, the drain rate should have been around 12 percent per hour. That still leaves 18 to 20 percent of battery to be accounted for. According to better battery stats, the phone was only awake for around 30 minutes total when the screen was off. And looking at the CPU Lodge, it's clear that those 30 minutes or so were spent in the lowest frequency mode , and that the phone was in deep sleep at all other times.
Attached are the better battery stats logs that shows the partial wakelocks as well. I don't know why the CPU's states are not included in the file but I can assure you I took a look look at it and the 30 or so minutes of awake time were perfectly captured by the 300mhz state.

I turned airplane mode on, and left location services on. Battery drain was 2.8%/hr (measured over a 5% battery drain interval) with the phone only being awake for 7min 28sec when the screen was off. There were around 5min of NLP wakelocks, and some other miscelaneous ones. I don't think that explains the battery drain fully.
Then, I turned off location services, and the battery drain has been 1.7%/hr (measured over an 8% battery drain interval) with a total awake time of 5 mins, and of that only 1 min of awake time when the screen was off. Very few to no wakelocks.
What is wrong? Why is the battery draining at ~2%/hr with airplane mode on, location services off, and the phone being in deep sleep pretty much the whole time!?
Hey I'm trying to find if there of a pattern with the battery drain and the battery voltage (mv) .I slightly have the felling the battery is a bit wonky . Could you check the battery voltage while charging just before 100% and the voltage when it has fully charged ? .. Try the code *#*#4636#*#*

I don't think a cache wipe is the solution. For example, see the updated battery settings screenshot below. The flat line at the end is the result of just rebooting the device (no cache wipe). The battery is no longer draining constantly, even though the same services are activated.
I'm the OP of the thread that I think first reported this issue. Note that I found that the drain is noticeable in airplane mode as you expect there to be almost zero drain, however it still happens when not in airplane mode as well, you just notice it less as the device is doing other stuff which all adds up to battery drain.
I think there is a driver bug, most likely a WiFi driver bug or possibly GPS driver bug. For example maybe GPS is somehow constantly active but the bug manifests itself in such a way that this is not reported to the OS itself which is why you do not see it active in the battery screen .
I had the exact same issue as reported above, no wakelocks over and above the normal amount but the drain was 3% hr or so. A reboot fixed it but it would reoccur when i connected to another WiFi network.
A factory reset fixed it completely until a few weeks ago when I was on the road and used GPS. That night I had the battery drain issue again.
So whether its WiFi or GPS that's the cause I don't know, and why, for me, did it stay fixed for so long. I also can't remember if I had GPS switched on when I first had the issue before the factory reset so makes it harder for me to determine the cause.
The above was all on 4.3. I've now upgraded to 4.4.2.
I think the only way to debug will to be to pull off all the various logs from android, you may even need to turn on various debugging/logs from the OS to capture more logs. I'm pretty sure you wont diagnose from just looking at wakelocks and battery screens.
If you can recreate this problem, and sounds like some of you have it a lot, then you are in a good position to get the logs.
BTW does anyone use the BBC weather app, I noticed this caused a LOT of NLP wakelocks so don't think its related but I did notice on 4.4.2 that it drained battery fast so I uninstalled. There is a thread in xda that I started about it.
A poster above says to clear cache, this is normally pointless as /cache will usually contain nothing except a few empty folders and a couple of log files. Also clearing cache means a reboot which temporarily fixes the issue anyway.

Thanks you very much for your reply Scott.
As you can see in my troubleshooting, I eventually turned location services and wifi off, but still measured a considerable battery drain. Do you suppose that once you use wifi, or location services after bootup, the effect may remain afterward even if they are switched off? If so, do you agree that if I turn off location services and wifi, then reboot so that the phone boots up with neither - that should be able to verify your hypothesis?
I'll go ahead and try that for a few days and see how it goes. Will report back.
Others have mentioned something to do with the cellular radio power management, and how rebooting and clearing the cache helps with that (apparently this came from a motorola rep...). I've included a data point in this thread where I merely rebooted without a cache clear and the problem went away. So, perhaps the clearing of the cache really does nothing at all ...
If this is a software issue, why aren't all phone with the same software version effected? How are people getting 6-7 days of standby time consistently? Maybe they never use wifi or location services? Well, I intend to test the wifi/gps hypothesis soon .
google+, google now etc caused me a massive battery drain until i greenified them. now i get a solid 2 days and about ~6 hours screen on time.

So that´s exactly what I did, too. Turns out my Moto G is a battery monster, 2 days with average screen time without any problems.

This thread is specifically about battery drain caused by something unknown, not an app or wakelock, I think we should try to keep it clean by not cluttering with app related issues as that can then be confusing for people who are reading through the thread. Thanks.

Well I cant answer all your questions but I will tell you about my test last night. I hardly use GPS at all (and my battery is normal) and last time I did use GPS I had the battery drain as per my post above, so last night I:
1. Drove 15mins from my house.
2. Switched on GPS (high accuracy).
3. Started google maps and drove for 2mins with GPS in use.
4. Shutdown maps app and drove home (GPS still on - ie high accuracy).
5. At home used phone for bit of XDA on wifi for a bit.
6. Switched on airplane mode but location service still on (note airplane mode does NOT switch off GPS), woke up at 02:00AM and noted I had the annoying battery drain - arghhh.
7. Switched off GPS - woke up 2 hrs later and drain still happening.
8. Switch off location altogether - woke up in morning and drain still happening.
9. Rebooted phone and now battery back to normal, Im back on wifi/mobile location (battery saving).
So to me it looks like its maybe related to GPS in some way but whether its purely GPS or a GPS/wigi/location combo I have no idea.
However I have in the past switced on GPS in my house just to play about and havent has the drain, so is it due to a larger change of location when GPS is on (ie 15mins drive from my house) that causes it to go bad.
So annoying, I took a CWM backup before I booted up my phone so I will pull that to my laptop and see if there are any obvious error logs to look at but I doubt it.
Im still leaning towards a driver issue or maybe some component, eg GPS chip, staying alive/awake even when not in use but m sure others have reported they have it with location/GPS off completely. Maybe its even a few different problems.
You said not everyone has the error, but I bet quite a few non-xda people do but do not realise. A lot of people will just charge their phones overnight so wont even realise, during the day they will think ~2% drop per hour is normal. Even if they do notice the drop in airplane mode they probably think thats normal and ignore it.
I think getting Motorola to accept there is an error is going to be almost impossible especially if its hardware related. Also as we have unlocked bootloader I doubt they will even accept a call once they know that.
I think it would be interesting to get a list of phones that are affected, ie model, serial no, location brought, ROM etc. maybe its a certain batch of phones, if we can determine that it would be some help, maybe we could buy one that isnt affected
So to start it off my phone is
XT1032 UK retail brought from Basildon, Essex, UK from phones4u.
Problem happens on 4.3 stock and 4.4.2 stock.
Baseband version is MSM8626BP_1032.340.63.00R.
Im tempted to flash GPE and/or new basenband radio but I bet the same thing happens.
I may see if there is a new GPS driver but no idea how to flash it etc.
Such a shame as this phone is excellent for me otherwise.
Just seen this thread as well, it blames GPS

if they're system apps, yeah. totally worth it tho cos you can do maps/fb etc too, also you can allow apps that get push messages to still give you notifications whilst greenified.
e: just to note, i have gps (high accuracy) enabled constantly and still manage 2 days.

Maybe you can help test if you don't mind.
1. Use Google maps with high accuracy when you go out for 5mins or so.
2. Once home use phone as normal on WiFi for a bit, just 10mins will be enough.
3. Take note of battery percent.
4. Switch on airplane mode for 2hrs - DO NOT USE PHONE during this time.
5. After 2hrs take note of battery percent.
6. Report the battery percents recorded in this thread.
If you can do this we would be grateful.
Let us know your phone model, where purchased, ROM etc.
Thanks.
Hi,
Following this MotoG thread for some time I have to admit that my MotoG also has the same issue from time to time.
This is the reason now that I joined XDA because this issue is a real pain.
Having my MotoG for three weeks now I had to restart it four or five times to get rid of the excessive battery drain.
My MotoG (XT1032) is bought in the Netherlands, unlocked, rooted, CWM and stock ROM.
I did remove some Motorola apps and disabled some.
Because of the last remarks that it seems to be GPS related, I want to let you know that it also happened to me without using the GPS.
Yesterday it happened at school, at first the drain was not present but suddenly it started.
In the between the two situation I only checked my mail through Wifi and checked some news.
My MotoG has Wifi always on, bluetooth off, GPS off.
There must be something more than just GPS which causes this drain.
Hopefully we can find the root cause soon.

Thanks for your reply, have you confirmed this drain happens when in airplane mode as well and that no wakelocks occur, no unusual statistics in battery screen etc. I ask as some people say they have the issue but then say they have greenified an app etc to stop it which basically means they dont have the issue at all. Im not saying I dont believe you, far from it, I just want to confirm its exactly the same issue as a few of us are seeing. Next time can you NOT reboot but leave phone in airplane mode for a few hours and DONT use it at all, then see if battery has gone down by 2-3% per hour.
Thanks.
Have not used airplane mode to check it, but will sure do this when it happens next time.
What I observed in battery stats was a high percentage of android-os.
I have not used greenify so far.

Doesn't sound like the same issue if android OS shows high in battery stats. That sounds more like a wakelock issue of some kind which still means you may get drain in airplane mode but for a different reason.
This thread is specifically for the problem of ALL battery stats looking normal, so android OS doesn't show up as high.
I think your best get is to root and install 'wakelock detector' app and you will probably see some high wakelock for android OS.
Thanks for your post on the Motorola forums Scott. It was well written, and to the point. I hope this issue gets the attention it deserves. I'll be reporting in the next few days with my experiments.

Sorry to post this wrong condition.
I had the impression that I was suffering the same problem.
Will have a look with a 'wakelock detector' to see if I can tackle the high android-os consumption since I rooted my device already.
Although the issue seems different I will have a good look this morning since I have to use the GPS.
Will keep you informed if I notice something weird.

Nexus 5 battery life

Hi, I really did some research but I find alot of ROMs and Kernels and I always get lost. I just need a good safe way to better the battery life of my Nexus 5 and keep it's stability and all the functions it has. So I wanted to ask what you guys recommend as Kernels, apps and lastly (I dont want to change unless its worth it) ROMs.
Sorry, its been hard without a PC to do decent research.
Enviado do meu Nexus 5 através de Tapatalk
The ROM has very little to do with battery life. It's all about the kernel or the apps.
We can't recommend kernels (or roms) as this is against the rules. They will all pretty much help with battery life. Just try them all- yourself.
Apps:
Greenify
Better battery Stats
That's it. Anything else I would recommend is going through all your settings and turning off things you dont need like location reporting etc
if battery life is all you are looking for... the difference are ... not much
Just disable google apps that you do not use, then you are good to go.
Locations settings, always off, activate only when needed. uncheck all under Google Location Reporting.
Disable NFC if not needed.
If you don't have good LTE coverage, change it to 3G under mobile networks.
For maximum battery life, do NOT activate Google Now.
eg. (These are apps I've disabled)
Drive
Earth
Email
Exchange Services
Face Unlock
Gallery (I use QuickPic as alternative)
Gmail
Google Hindi input (These ones gets disabled once you uncheck them from input settings)
Google Play books
Google Play Games
Google Play Magazines
Google Play Movies & TV
Google Play Music (I use Poweramp *Paid)
Google+
Keep
Maps
News & weather
Quickoffice

It doesn't matter what's on your phone....you should be able to get good battery life. Its all about setup and usage.
Just gotta troubleshoot issues occasionally.
Please check the thread linked above, and read read read. . (Start on last page and read back for a bit....a lot of good info)
On my phone it certainly seems to have something to do with signal quality. At home, I can put the phone next to the bed at night with it fully charged and wake up with it at about 95 or 96%.
At work a fully charged phone just sitting on my desk drops to about 90% in only a couple of hours.
The signal quality in my building at work is pretty poor, so I'm guessing the phone is using a lot of extra energy desperately searching for a better signal .

Poor and searching for signal is probably the biggest battery drain there can be.
Get gsam. And after your at work a few hours, open and click on "phone radio". It will say how long your phone was actually searching for a signal. That's a huge battery killer.
The only cures, get on WiFi. Or go into airplane mode. Toggle off data might help, then you'd still get texts and phone calls.

I do have wifi on in both locations, so the wifi part of this doesn't help. I suspect data isn't the issue, just the cell connection. My old phone used to randomly reboot inside this building when trying to get a signal . I guess I should install gsam just to verify, but the signal is really the only difference between work and home, so I'm pretty sure that is the issue.

Usually battery drain from a low or bad signal is only a big issue while on data. On WiFi it doesn't affect the battery much , if any. Its from apps trying to sync through data on a bad or no signal. So on WiFi, that's not an issue.
At home I get fairly poor reception...sometimes only a bar...with some time spent searching for signal, but my battery times are at their best at home. On WiFi.
It could be a network issue. Some devices on networks can affect your device by spam polling your phone....might want to also get wakelock detector to see that. If the LAN is draining your battery, there will be wakelocks from it.
Try gsam and compare work results to home results. Especially good would be trying at least a few hours of total standby to see the difference at both locations. You'd have to reset gsam stats to start your standby test at all zeros though. A reboot will reset gsam.
Good luck!
Remove all google [email protected]%# ...
And disable autostart from programs like poweramp which start on boot...use romtoolbox and autostart manager
Of course, pay attention to what you're going to disable
If You will try and You have some doubt ask here
I use a lightweight aosp ROM, a minimal gapps package, stock kernel, disabled some programs from boot and run in background...and battery duration is good
Don't ask to us roms/kernel combo, please Questions like your are not allowed on xda
Always read the users feedback and make Your choice
And... My doubt..is it really needed to change the kernel ??
Give stock kernel a chance... That's all I can say...
And make sure to charge your phone the right way
Hi! Anyone knows if I can disable the processes that Viber starts every so often? Like the in-app processes, it keeps on running in the background consuming a huge chunk of my battery. I already emailed Viber about it but unfortunately they don't have a fix for it.

I think that is just the difference in signal quality. It seems to be pretty common to get degraded signal at work places due to larger structure sizes as well as more users per cell tower.
Phone Idle is from the voice network, Cell Standby is from the data connection.

Anyone else having lots of wakelocks after flashing new kernels?

Hey guys.
Lately whenever I'm flashing a new kernel either on KitKat or Lollipop I get terrible wakelocks that kill my battery. Not sure why this is happening. I'm using CWM. Basically after flashing I can just notice a huge battery drainage and I tend to install either GSam or WakelockDetector to see what's the problem. WakelockDetector (Rooted) gives me an overall idea of my battery problem. Usually SystemUpdateService, Audiomix "1013", "NlpWakeLock" , "EventlogService" and "CheckinService" drain my battery the most. Sometimes "ConfigFetchService" as well.
Thanks

[Battery Life Help] Troubleshoot battery issues here!
Application wakelocks have absolutely nothing to do with the kernel.
Keep in mind a "wakelock" is simply a request to keep the device awake; they can happen regardless whether the screen is on or off, they are only an issue if they occur while the screen is OFF.
SystemUpdateService is a pretty obviously named wakelock, it's used while an OTA is being downloaded. You can disable the service and it's receivers with an app like Autorun Manager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autorun, open in advanced mode, go into it's settings to enable for system apps, tap on Google Play Services, disable everything with SystemUpdateService in it's name).
AudioMix is triggered every time there is an audio event, including touch sounds. Harmless as it's usually only used while the screen is on.
NlpWakeLock is a location wakelock.
EventlogService and CheckinService are harmless, unless they occur 24/7 and don't go away EVER, which means you disabled their services but not their receivers.
ConfigFetchService is mostly harmless, it simply fetches your settings from Google's servers when you open a Google app, if that app stores it's settings on the cloud instead of locally.

ConfigFetchService is mostly harmless, it simply fetches your settings from Google's servers when you open a Google app, if that app stores it's settings on the cloud instead of locally.

Disabling the receivers works indeed. Thanks! By the way, another issue I'm having is that my Nexus 5's CPU heats too fast operating in UI and doing basic stuff, like installing apps from Play Store or watching videos on YouTube. Normally after about 5 min. of running if I go to System Monitor the CPU's temp is around 40-47ºC on action, in standby cools down to 34-35ºC but then after I use it again the temp rise to 45-47ºC. Usually when this happens the battery's temperature is also triggered and reaches 28-30ºC. Is this normal?

The CPU throttles at 65C by default (some kernels change this or give you an option to change it), and shuts down at 105C. 47C is hardly anything.
