Myself and my partner have recently purchased an Xperia Z3 each running Android 4.4.4 and love it but experiencing a very strange issue with mobile data.
Periodically on both our devices we lose mobile data (no 4G, H/H+ symbol) despite have a good connection. A phone restart fixes the problem but this happens all time and usually when reception is lost and then rejoined. Turning airport mode on does not fix the issue.
We are both on the UK Three Mobile network and have entered the correct APN settings.
Very strangely I have discovered the if I change just the "APN" entry to any random text then go back to mobile network settings the data instantly appears and works again for a period of time! This saves a reboot but the issue returns again once reception is lost The official setting for apn is "three.co.uk" but the issue still happens. Very strange that changing just the apn name to anything random fixes it for a bit.
I'm hoping the lollipop update fixes this issue but not holding up hope, any suggestions, or has anyone seen this issue? I suspect this a network issue but have already changed sim cards with no luck.
Also this issue occurs regardless of location and on both our identical devices. Have carried out factory resets too but no joy.

I dont think device has any fault..if ur device is unlocked u can try another sim card and see if issue persists..
U can try deleting all apns and download via settings menu...amd try..
Thanks for the reply, have tried removing all apn settings and re-adding but no luck
Our phones are factory unlocked so will try and test with another network sim, if I can find one...
Wish the lollipop update would come out already so I can test with that.
Cheers

I'm surprised no one else has faced this problem. Mine and 2 other Explorers I have seen have it.
The mobile data gets disconnected on its own. The 'E' symbol from the network icon goes away. But mobile data is marked as enabled in the settings.
Sometimes, toggling mobile data a couple of times does the trick. Sometimes I have to toggle airplane mode then toggle data. Sometimes even this doesn't work and I have to reboot the phone to get data to work.
This disconnection happens every couple of hours, so it is a real pain.
I am using cm9, I had the problem on stock too and on every ROM I have tried.
I have tried marking the network type to 'GSM only' in the 'Testing' menu (from 'GSM/WCDMA auto') as I read somewhere that this solves the problem. Still no luck.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I guess my apn is correct, since net does work normally (ie. when I'm able to connect). I have tried two sim cards, and know 2 other people who have the same problem, one of them uses a different operator.

Not necessarily, sometimes it goes off while I'm browsing etc, and then just won't come back on. And keep data always on is enabled in settings, and I don't use any battery saving app.
Any idea what the problem is?
Which rom you are using now?
Check if you have data connection or not.
Did you try to connect internet using the same sim card with another mobile
If another mobile connects to internet then reflash your ROM or try another ROM
hit thanks if helped

I am using the unofficial cm9.
I have data connection right now. I have used this same sim with my Nokia phone before I got my Explorer without any issues.
Maybe it IS an operator issue, but then there should be many complaints from India about the same thing right?

whenever i flash new rom
data wrks fine
bt persinally i hv seen that wen i install twitter
it behaves like ur prob n dsnt mtter if i uninstall it
it kps on dscnncting randomly until i flash new rom
it's a network problem, I had the same issue once so I called the network service centre & they told me that they were upgrading the system & recommended me to use the data plan after few hours.. so after few hours I called again & they confirmed that the problem was solved..after that till now I have no disconnection issues.
With BSNL sim card, I have helped so many friends connect to internet properly by creating an APN "bsnlnet". By default HTC and all use the old APN (gprssouth.cellone.in). That connects for a while and disconnects.
And Nokia phones automatically receive a configuration setting message from BSNL but Android doesn't.

I've used cm9, cm10, cm10.1, aosp, aokp, jaggy, cm10.2 weekly. It's the same with my TATA DOCOMO sim. I ported to vodafone and with the correctly configured apn settings, its working great. It's definitely a provider problem and has been for the last 2 years.
Hi All,
I've been having an issue after upgrading from a Nexus 4 to Nexus 5 where the phone will not re-connect to the home network (or will only reconnect to GSM with no data) after losing connection. This happens for example when going into an elevator or parking garage; I'll lose signal and when I get back into a signal area it won't reconnect unless I go to the "Mobile networks" -> "Network operators" menu and select "HOME" or "Automatic Registration". I'm using Straight Talk wireless with an older T-Mobile SIM (before they switched to only AT&T). I've called Straight Talk a few times to try and debug this, but the only instruction they've given me is to reset the APN and set it up again, which I've done a couple times to no avail. They claim that the SIM card is good on their end. Any ideas what might be causing this?
Thanks!

It sounds like the Baseband/RIL problems I had with my old LG OP2X with non-stock roms. For me, it was fixed switching to aeroplane mode and back, it could also get stuck there, I remember it once took me half a day to get it out for I didn't want it to wipe it.
Any way, may be it's not the same but it could be fixed flashing a baseband, I think I saw a thread about it somewhere around... Also, flashing the full firmware should —if it's not a hardware issue— solve the problem without doing much research.
HI

Hi Were you able to get a solution for this, My nexus 5 does not connect automatically to the network, it works only for manual search.
Please help...
Same problem here. Any solution?
I'm stuck with out any connection for the las two days. Tried removing battery, airplane mode. manual search. nothing.
Tried my line in other phone and it worked, other line in my phone and it didn't.
S4 I9500. Paranoid 4 Beta 4.
I don't have a really good solution, i reflashed my phone to stock and it did not fix the issue. I ended up switching carriers to T-mobile and haven't seen the problem since. It seems it was a SIM or network problem like i suspected

I still couldn't make this work I'm this close to buying a new phone... any idea?
Heyho,
about three weeks ago, my N5 suddenly lost it's signal over night and shows me "Emergency calls only" and it won't register into any network, just giving "Selected network unavailable".
When this occured my N5 had 4.4.2 stock ROM and rooted. I've unrooted it and updated to 4.4.4, but I still got the same problem.
Problem occurs with any simcard, while simcard works with other phones just fine.
Have deleted and reconfigured APN, but didn't make any difference.
I get a signal every few days, but I still can't receive text/calls or call/text anyone and my mobile data doesn't work.
I even tried to downgrade to 4.4, but that didn't solve my problem either...
I'm from Germany, but in New Zealand at the moment, so I really need my phone in case of emergencies and to stay in touch with family/friends.
I have been searching for a solution since it started, but have not been able to find anything that worked.
Sending it back to Google isn't an option right now because I am travelling.
I am really thankfull for any suggestions or if anyone knows how to fix this problem!
Cheers
Have you checked to make sure the network setting says 2g/3g/LTE preferred. Because I had this problem when it was switched to 2g only and was fixed by the above option
If the above fails trying going to your dialer and typing *#*#4636#*#*. Go into phone information and you should see a drop down box to select your network mode. Play around with those until you get a signal but you might not want to try CDMA options (WCDMA is ok) since you're on a GSM network.

had exactly the same issue as you mentioned. Nexus 5 tends to lose network without any logical explanation and it tends to work at one place but stop showing network if you walk half a mile down the road (or may not show any network anywhere). Google has released an update in June in which they have updated the modem to solve the problem..given that I am in India and the June update was for India, Australia and Newzeland, it worked like a charm for me (all i had to do was flash the modem from twrp)..people as far away as netherlands have reported the modem to work for them..
NOTE: IF U INTEND TO FLASH THE LATEST MODEM, DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT MODEM PRIOR TO FLASHING THE NEW ONE..
check your sim card. if you can, try someone elses.
Alright,
I've tried every thing again so far, but nothing seems to work.
Sitting in the library, I noticed that I get a signal, when connected to WiFi, which stays for 1-2 hours after disconnecting.
But I still can't make any calls or text and mobile data doesn't work though the APN is correctly configured and and data enabled.
I really hope to be able to solve this problem somehow, don't want to put aside my beloved N5 :/

Edit: Haven't found any solution so far and bought a new phone for the moment until I'm able to send it back to Google.
Might be an hardware issue and not software related.

hey kimpfimp... u r not alone .. ive had this problem for 2 months now .. .. i have a nexus 5 and i have this exact same problem .. leads me to believe maybe its software related .. started after lolipop .. havent been able to find a solution yet !
worst part is that it is happening on an Replacement device after i RMAd my first nexus for a power button problem !!
i hope its software related and can be fixed .. because google is now refusing to rma this as im now out of my warranty period !
I managed to side-loaded and update my phone to 5.0.2. After updating though I am unable to connect to mobile data network. I wiped cache and factory erased my phone and even bought a new sim in case the sim I was using was faulty. Any help would be appreciated figuring out the reason i am unable to connect to mobile data.
Edit: I managed to fix this after getting my sim 1 reader fixed and now it seems to me that the lollipop update supports mobile data only on sim 1.

I had a similar problem, i had to set proxy settings to non in apn settings...
goto-settings>more(in wireless and networks )>mobile networks>access point names>click the selected the access point remove anything written in proxy part.
This might work
There is no such problems here. Everything seems fine. Little better than KitKat in connectivity.

I tried it. But it doesn't seem to work. As far as i can tell the data switch itself isnt working. Turning it on or off keeps the data connection on off mode.
Ps. Forgot to mention that my sim 1 slot is broken. So, i am currently using Sim2.
I've had the same issue twice after reboots. Then I reboot again and it's gone.
For some reason it adds lots of data usage from "deleted users and apps" and it can't connect to the network of my SIM card, it's a bug obviously but rebooting fixes it for me.
I have an XT1032 modded to XT1033 5.0.2.

Hello,
I am experiencing a strange issue with mobile data, the most similar thread I could find about my issue is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/fix-workaround-mobile-data-connectivity-t1149716
I am using Samsung J1 SM-J100ML, Android 4.4.4, Kernel 3.19.17-366995, Mar 26 2015, bought new as unlocked rooted
The phone was purchased new and everything worked great for a few months. Recently I took a short trip overseas to Australia and bought an Optus SIM card and installed their android app from Google play (this was the only change I can think of that could have caused my issue). Upon returning home and using my normal SIM, I found my phone is now constantly switching between HSPA and HSPA+, sometimes many times per minute. This interferes with web browsing or using chat apps, as the connections seems it must reset, which takes a few seconds each time it switches. This issue is making is incredibly frustrating to use the mobile data now. I ruled out issues with the SIM card, no mobile data issues on my other Samsung devices in the same location.
From my searches on this forum, I want to try to access the setting "CHANGE HSPA REVISION" so I can lock my device to a frequency to prevent switching, or disable Fast Dormancy.
I tried codes such as *#301279# and *#*#9900#*#, but they are not working. Uninstalled Optus app and threw away their SIM card already. I also tried starting the phone in Safe mode, but I still noticed the mobile data issue.
I can access the ServiceMode using *#0011#. I tried many combinations of selecting "Back" and entering "Q" then "0" or "00", or "Q0", "Q00", "Q0000", etc.. but nothing works.
I called Samsung for help, but they never heard of ServiceMode, and recommended a Factory reset.
My options as I see it:
1. Factory reset (long process to backup all data, reset, restore... I want to avoid). I suspect my issue is software related and will fix the issue, but its not guaranteed.
2. Find the correct "Key Input" code so I can use the ServiceMode and change settings that may help.
3. Buy a new phone.
Any ideas? Any one know the correct Key Input code to get farther in ServiceMode for this device? Thanks.
