TUT - Use Set CPU to overclock your Android Smartphone - Android General

Looking for some ways to Overclock your device? Well here is a short post, which can guide you to use SetCPU and overclock your android smartphone.
Why to OVerclock using SetCPU:
The speed of your Android device is solely dependent on the processor of the device. Now every processor is set at a certain speed at which it processes the data. The more the clock speed, the more faster the processor operates, and hence faster the device. Overclocking means that you increase the clock speed of the processor over the limit it is set to operate. Now when you do so, it is certain that your device will function faster.
But the overclocking should be done with great care, and tactic, as if you do not follow the procedure properly, you might ending up bricking or even permanently damaging your phone’s processor. Now if you overclock the device too much, it might give heating issues, and it might even damage the hardware of the phone, or the processor specifically. Or if you down clock the device too much, it might not even boot up. So overclocking must be proceeded with care. Also in this tutorial we will be overclocking your device using SetCPU app. Follow the procedure below, to Overclock your device using setcpu. Also if you are looking to do some more android tweaks, get them here.
Pre- Requisites :
Before we begin the process to overclock your android smartphone using setcpu, first of all let us go through some things that need to be done before we start with the procedure.
Make sure the device is at least 70% charged, as we do not want that the device to shut down in the middle of procedure.
To overclock and use SetCPU you need to have root access, i.e., your android device needs to be rooted. SO if you haven’t rooted it yet, first go root it, and then come back.
Also overclocking your device, can be harmful for the device, so make a complete backup of the device before proceeding.
How to Use Set CPU to Over clock Processor :
So follow these steps to over clock your phone using the Set CPU.
First of all, install SetCPU app on your device.
Now, that you have finished the installation procedure, you need to launch the app.
Click on “Auto Detect Speeds” option.
Then grant the phone will ask you to grant the root access to the Set CPU app, confirm the root access.
Now you need to set the maximum and the minimum limits of the clock speed for your processor
You have to note that these speed limits should be balanced, i.e., not too high or too low. As it may cause your phone to behave abruptly. If it is too low, the phone may stop response, and if it is too high it may overheat, and even the processor might get permanently damaged. So it should be done carefully.
Also do not select the option “Bott on SET”, till you think the speed limits are stable.
Now when you are satisfied with the speeds, you need to choose the times when you want the Set CPU to start and over clock your phone, like while on user space, or on demand.
his was a short guide, on how to use SET CPU to over clock your processor. Also if in case, the phone gets into trouble, you need to reboot into the recovery mode, and then flash the backup you made via the recovery. You would get the phone recovered to the period, backup was made. Also if you face any more issues, you can always contact us via the comment section below.

i have samsung j1 2016 j120h its a spreadtrum variant of j1 2016. i am rooted all cpu tuning apps wont work the cpus stay the same even after applying setttings. and i noticed that my cpu0 and cpu3 are the only ones active. my soc is sc772se

Set CPU or KernelAuditor is FAKE, it make your device have a lot of ads. It only can limit cpu clock, choose cpu clock and CaN't OVER-OVERCOCK. The max stock frequency not rise (my english so bad), must flash custom kernel overclocked.

Your SetCPU setting(s)?

What scaling setting do you use, maybe you have custom profile?
I personally use 'ondemand', but I was thinking.... It would be nice to have a smart scaling setting, based on the amount the phone is used, screen brightness and the battery temperature, etc.

Hi.
I've set mine at 576 max and left minimum at 245, scaling is on demand, and have set a profile for screen off at 245 for both. I've left the advanced screen as I don't have a clue what any of it means lol.
Non
Used it at first when got rooted. still on root BA23 firmware and im very happy with the current setup. I left the processor to operate the way it want to do.
Dont take me wrong, its a great software, everything is depends on overall apps you are running. and its unique to your phone, check its really necessary.
After-all we are talking about android, not windows.
I want to know the best setting also I had some custome profiles (after reading in a post on XDA) but phone got slow, laggy & sometimes call drop. Then i deleted all custome profiles

I had that problem once. But i think it is a OS bug than the SetCPU bug itself. You should re-root your fone and set profiles one more time. It will help you save a lot of battery
My setting (following someone on the net)
- Fully chage (AC/USB): 998/245
- Screenoff: Max: 348 Min: 245
- Battery <25%: Max: 348 Min: 245
Ok Dundun, I've set profiles again same as yours let's see how it workd
Just came across this thread for decent SetCPU setting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734886

What is core control/vdd restriction/core throttle?

I see these three options I'm various kernel tweaking apps and just curious what each one does.
Core control is usually enabled and the app has a warning not to use more than one all though I've used various combos of the three with no difference.
Thanks
Did you find the answer to this? I've been looking for this as well.
Core Control : Enable / disable throttling, this enables the thermal engine and enable VDD restriction and core throttle
VDD Restriction : Limits CPU voltage, limiting it will decrease temperature
Core Throttle : Throttles CPU when enabled, this decrease CPU frequency to a lower step when it reaches a specified temperature
// This is all I know, btw. This could be wrong, so I advise an extra Google search just in case
Wondering this as well, which one is best?

As far as I know it's a way that kernel manages the cpu...so it won't burn.
When cpu gets hot it will limit the cores (core control) or their frequency (core throttle)so it will decrease cpu usage and makes it cooler...
Both will impact cpu at high temperatures but having them on is an insurance that you won't melt your cpu...and having 2 or three enabled will limit cpu cores and frequency so it will be snail speed at high temperature (will cool down sooner but it impacts cpu very high... And may get bug)
Suggest to set core control and as long as you maintain temperature...none of them have any difference.
these thermal driver is not thermal throttling disable it can't get rid of thermal throttle, these driver control cpu frequency between cpu governor. core control is for low end phone base on mpdecision and replace it, but core control never unplug any cpu core when idle. useless driver

- In Thermal settings of Smartpack Kernel Manager enable SoC Temperature throttle instead of Core Control.
- In Smartpack Kernel Manager set CPU governor of little CPU to something like "relaxed" if your ROM/Kernel Supports it (on crDroid for example)
- In CPU hotplug settings of Smartpack set minimum of big CPUs to 0.
Make sure to enable those settings in Smartpack at boot with the Switch at top of the corresponding Module in Smartpack.
And you need root/magisk for these Kernel Tweaks to work.

If you have Google Play Services installed and don't need Google Assistant Voice recognition you may also use this fix to reduce CPU drain:
(Temp. fix:root reqd.) High CPU usage and battery drain due to Google Play Services.

Mi4i - Only Four cores are running most of the time, resulting in lagging performance

Hello,
Mi 4i lags/slows down most of the time, when i check CPU-Z during that time, i can see that only the lower clocked 2/4 cpu cores run constantly at 800 Mhz. It is very difficult to use when it is so slow. Other 4/6 cores remain inactive.
Is there any solution for this weird behavior while running in Balanced mode. Even when switching to Performance mode, nothing changes. I believe due to the heat generated, the OS automatically underclocks the CPU. I have already rooted and tried changing the CPU Governor, Clock speed but it resets to default every time. Sometimes i am unable to change that too.
Thank you.
There's a configuration that does this, just try to use the provided tweaks available here and then configure the phone's cores and so manually.
http://en.miui.com/thread-140563-1-1.html
I tried tweaking the thermal config using the above thread. But still only four cores are active @ 800 Mhz. The phone is so lagging that it is not usable at most of the time. Unable to change governor in any CPU clocking app, turn on the other cores. If you can help me out, please let me know.
Thanks.

Might be a bug. Try a clean install and see
Same here
I am having a similar issue, very frustrating. I tried Sensei kernel, but no luck
i don't know what do you mean bro
everytime i change to other rom, other kernel
the results is...
all core is on

strange, i am using miuipro with sensei and havent found any problem.
This happens in the latest stable MIUI7 ROM. I think it is time to change to a custom rom.

Heat after root

I was looking for a similar threads but didn't find any. So the problem is that my phone gets warm after root, (also it has less free ram available) I am not doing anything special, just normal magisk installation + kernel sometimes. No matter how I set frequencies in kernel manager, device still gets warm during simple phone usage like messaging/web browsing etc. Am I doing something wrong or this is just side effect of rooting?
Fixed, heating and low ram was happening because of the wrong settings in kernel adiutor. I was setting max frequencies at 1590 and this was limiting big core frequencies also - they have 2150 MHz maximum. There is an app in play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dsmartapps.root.kerneltweaker and it can help with that.

Which kernel manager are you using? For Elementalx kernel manager it shows as mc_power_saving

Well im using smartpack kernel manager from Google play store
Nvm i found it ?
Followed these instructions; I've lost 2% while typing this, with a new battery, under LineageOS 16.0
I guess it's a ROM bug, unless proven otherwise.
Does anybody know if is there any way to get this without root-app, by mean of a one-time TWRP flashable zip?
Thank you.
