If you were a bit silly like me, perhaps you flashed the JB OTA on your Telus HOX before you rooted, unlocked, got SuperCID and S-Off. I didn't have much luck searching the forum for exact steps on how to get that stuff after taking the OTA. All the info is here, but I was confused what applied to my Telus phone and what would work even after the JB OTA. So I figured I'd detail my steps here in case someone else wants a detailed guide. Obviously the credit for everything below goes to the original authors of the techniques. I'm just linking stuff.
Unlock
1.Register at HTCDev and follow the directions to unlock your bootloader. Its pretty straightforward. You don't need to download the whole huge 300+ Android SDK. You can just get the adb-fastboot package from this thread.
Flash Recovery
I flashed TWRP with one-click via this AIO toolkit. There is probably tons of other ways to do it.
Root
Not sure its possible to root the stock JB unless you install a different ROM. So I did a system reset in TWRP and the flashed the Viper XL ROM. Its pre-rooted.
SuperCID
Its quite easy - just follow this guide exactly.
S-Off
Follow this guide and you shouldn't have a problem.
Once you have all that, you can downgrade your touch firmware. The reason to do this is if you want to install AOSP-based ROMs like CyanogenMod or AOKP. I haven't done that yet because I'm pretty happy with ViperXL. If you want to stick with Sense-based ROMs it isn't necessary to downgrade.
As a final note, once you've got ViperXL and S-Off I'd highly recommend trying the ElementalX Kernel.

You can. I was able to root my stock JB (had to install SuperSU manually) after installing the custom recovery through fastboot.

if i have the unlock token i can root 3.18 AT T ota?
Yup, if you managed to unlock the bootloader then you're clear to go all the way to s-off (and you should).
I have a htc one S , but this SuperCID doesn't work on my device.
Does it work after the JB OTA with the One X ?
I'm unable to use my Phone without using custom ROMs, 'cause I can't flash any RUU (CID is T-MOB101).
(I had battery problems after JB OTA-Update)
This isn't the One S forum. I'd advise asking in the appropriate forum.
Ok i can bearly find any info i'm sorry if im in the wrong place but the one x plus from [email protected] just got an ota is it still posible to root after this update? I tryed hysoon200's tool kit but the htc dev website claims my unlock key is too short i coppied it perfectly several times infact the last time i almost bricked it the screen was black for a half hour and after 2-5 mins holding the power button it booted back up can someone please point my retarted a$$ to the rite direction?
Hey, the One X+ is a totally different phone so I can' t really say what's the best direction. You are best off posting in the One X+ forum.

i wound up following the htc steps and manually made a folder and it gave me the correct token so needless to say it's unlocked flashed the su.zip made a nandroid and now i got full root thanks for your help thoe but now i'm looking at roms i keep hearing viper is the thing to have but i'm impartial to cyanogen so i'm looking for unofficial portss i wish they would crack s-off so i could do a normal flash without the dang adb lol
If I do this, will I lose my SIM unlock? I am using an unlocked Telus One X with Fido. Thanks.
You can s-off. You just need to change yiur cid to 11111111 first. Aosp roms are all in the original android development section of this forum.
I believe carrier unlock is done at the bootloader layer so it should not affect your sim unlock

I just unlocked the bootloader. Now I want to flash TWRP, but do I need to run the X Factor exploit in the AIO toolkit? Thanks.
Just a quick question, I did all the steps including downgrading the touch firmware (thanks for the help!), but I just have one more question. I was looking at CM 10.1 ROM and it said and update to RUU 3.18 is required. How can I check my RUU? Do I need to update? Thanks for any help.
Just checked my RUU, it's 3.17.

3.17 is fine. If that cm10.1 doesn't boot, ruu again, flash recovery, downgrade touchscreen and flash it again.
Hi,
I installed Viper XL several months back, but after my battery went down to 0, the homescreen would not load. I could get into settings and all that, but the homescreen (and access to all my apps) wasn't there. I've had several different phones and always run into trouble with custom roms (minor and major), so I just wanted to go back to the HTC stock rom (which was always reliable).
I'm running Evita version 2.20.502.7. I know the general process is to relock the bootloader and install the proper RUU, but I have a few questions.
In my searching, I've come across multiple methods for doing this...can anyone link me to the correct way to revert back to stock rom? Additionally, I haven't been able to find the correct RUU for my version. Could someone provide a link to the correct RUU?
Thanks.

This is the thread I was talking about. Most of the things I saw mentioned something similar to this, and it doesn't mention anything about Super CID or S-On/Off, just the version of the phone (which I posted). I thought the version was enough...if it's not, I'm running on AT&T.
This is why I'm asking this question here, because obviously this method I was looking at isn't completely correct.

Yeah that thread is also a year old -_-
In any case, If you're s-off, boot to fastboot, plug phone to pc, run RUU.
If you're S-on and have super CID, you will not be able to update to 3.18/3.17 without bricking
If you're S-on and don't have super CID you can relock your bootloader, plug in your phone, run RUU.
I'd like to return to stock JB for moonshine S-OFF, and the software version that was last installed before I rooted was 3.14.531.17 710RD. This was the small update that was released to fix the battery drain after the release of JB for the One S. It was released right after 3.14.531.11, which I see an RUU for. My question is: Can I use the 3.14.531.11 RUU (detailed RUU name: RUU_Ville_U_JB_45_S_TMOUS_3.14.531.11_Radio_1.13.50.05.31_10.30.50.08L_release_309489_signed_ICS_2) even though I upgraded, before rooting and installing CM10.1, to 3.14.531.17? All other relevant information matches.
Thanks.
EDIT: Nevermind, stupid question. Of course that number denotes the software version so I'll be fine for S-OFF as long as I don't OTA upgrade to 3.14.531.17.
can someone confirm this? been trying to find info on this, having no luck.
I don't know if you need them to match but I do know here is the link for the last updates RUU

Yes, this is correct. Use that RUU.exe to return to stock, and it will also work when using Moonshine.
That RUU.exe is for U.S. tmobile users.

Thanks for the info. Would have responded sooner but didn't notice your response till now. still quite knew to android (haven't even owned mine a month) , so have been reading A LOT.. You knew exactly what I was trying to achieve there. Success!! Got s-off, and supercid. Running MaximusHD 10.0.0 right now. One more quick question though if you don't mind. Can there be issues switching between mods, as long as I don't go ruu obviously. Thanks for your time.

Mods? I don't use any mods on Maximus, so I don't know about that.
If you mean switching between ROMs when you have Maximus installed, then yes, you need to downgrade your firmware to try any other rom after Maximus is installed.

Hi Guys,
I know this may be frustrating for some of you, but as a complete beginner in using Android, I was wondering whether someone could help me out here. I have tried searching various forums, but my knowledge of androids is limited. I used the tutorial from Rootwiki to successfully unlock my bootloader, install TWRP recovery and root my phone
Does this mean I am not using a stock rom?
Now I sort of regret deciding to do this and would like to return to stock so that I can get any OTA updates without further tampering with my phone. Unfortunately while following the above tutorial, I only made a backup after TWRP was installed and not before, so I need help in going back please.
I can see that there are a few people in my position, so I'm sure others will benefit from this as well.
My software details are:
Android version - 4.2.2.
Software number - 1.33.206.1
HTC SDK API level - 5.41
Network - o2 uk
Can I use any stock recovery file or does it have to be specific to the above?
Can you please provide a step by step guide with a list of files that I will need to download?
or can I simply just factory reset my phone, and everything goes back to normal? I don't mind having to re install apps etc?
Thank you all very much
i have a HTC One mini 4.3 and i am in the exact same situation. i like to get stock recovery but those ive tried hasent been working.
If you didint flash a rom after you installed your recovery, the back up you made is then of stock os
Maybe if you take the ota, it will cancel out ur root and five you stock recovery back, i havent browsed these forums.. Try searching for a RUU and stock recovery, the phone is fairly new, so can take time for someone to put something together

Ok guys, I got the notification for the OTA update today, I have downloaded it but haven't installed it. From a different thread, I found a link for a stock recovery which is about 9.5mb from androidfile host (/?fid=23252070760975668)
can I just flash this recovery and proceed with the update? or will there be compatibility issues with the version I have above?
Thanks
Anyone?
I am getting desperate to the point that I might actually pay HTC to repair it for me

not yet, but MirageBlader has been quite helpful and has said the following in a private message to me, which I have yet to try:
"Very easy mate, open your ota and flash the stock recovery from the ota. You can only install it with stock Rom, stock boot and stock recovery. Your bootloader musst be locked and your phone unrooted. s-off is not needed if you already got the ota"

I'd be very interested to know the results of your attempt to go back to "stock".
Can I ask if you are doing this just to get the 4.3 update? Also, do you plan to root and customise your ROM after the update, or leave it stock?
Thanks, and good luck....

I haven't got round to trying this out yet, will update this thread once I do, just quite busy this month and can't afford to mess up my phone. Yep, just doing it for the update, I only rooted my phone in the first place to get rid of bloatware, which i realised is a lot more complicated than just rooting, and all the other benefits of rooting don't really appeal to me, or are too much hassle for a beginner such as myself.
Just need to figure out how to unroot and relock my bootloader before I can go ahead with this :s
Hey nelvinchi. You seem to be knowledgeable enough on the matter and have been looking for help with my device. I posted a separate thread yesterday. If you have time/think you can help, could you take a look? Would much appreciate it.

If you have SuperSU installed on your phone, the app has a settings option called "Full unroot" - this will get rid of root. Relocking your bootloader - there are various methods, you could try HTCDEV site (probably how you unlocked originally), or the revone option which will lock the bootloader and remove the "tampered" label. Try a search, but if you are unsure, jusk ask!

Got everything sorted with the great help of Nelvin. I had previously gone to the twrp support IRC and after answering a few questions, they just stopped talking... Glad there are people out there still willing to help! He spent a good hour or so with me making sure everything was working.

Thanks for your reply nelvinchi, can I just confirm whether the SuperSU app you're talking about it the one by Chainfire in the marketplace? And is it just a matter of installing this from the marketplace to unroot my device, or is it a bit more complicated than that?
I'll do some research on relocking my bootloader with revone.
Also do you reckon the above method of getting the stock recovery from my update file will work?
Thanks for your help

Can I make a suggestion? Given where you are with your phone currently, It would be much simpler, and virtually risk free, to flash tr1gg3r's Stock Sense 5.5 4.3 rooted deodexed rom from the One Mini Android Development forum.
You will get the 4.3 update, and have a fast and very stable ROM. All future updates will be incorporated into a newer ROM version.
Returning to "stock" carries FAR more risk - and you'll never have true stock because it isn't possible. Soon as the bootloader is unlocked, your phone is tampered, and no tool or utility can change that (other than cosmetically!)
It's your choice obviously, but if I was you, I'd stay rooted and enjoy the benefits it brings!
If you still want to try to go back to stock, I'll help..... But I've now helped three members get out of a soft brick after they attempted to go stock.......
As I'm getting ready to send my phone into HTC to be repaired. I have 4.4.4 RUU'd my phone, and in the process of getting s-on and root removed, I somehow am stuck with superuser as a system app, what should I do?
Since I know I can get s-off on 4.4.4, I haven't let my phone upgrade to the lollipop ota. Do I need to re-root and remove it?
Also, if I send in my phone to HTC, any chance it won't come back updated?
