Security advice needed - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. What do you recommend to use to lock down a device when showing an image on your phone to others. Example
(1) i want to use a keyring and have to hand my phone to the cashier to scan because the scanner is behind their counter. How would you lock down the phone to everything but the keyring app.
(2) i want to show someone a movie or picture and hand them my phone but dont want them to access anything but the app I launched for them to see.
I found app lock but that is a lock down per each app. I want something reverse like a quick launch item that essentially turns the lock screen on except for the single app session on the foreground.
Thanks in advance.

Isn't this built in to lollipop? I think it's called screen pinning.

Great suggestion. Never knew about it since I'm on kk not lollipop. Thanks so much

MOTHER OF ALL BUGs

It is cumbersome enough to have to remove the device from its case everytime you want to view the homescreen to check the time, appointments; etc. WORST is if you have the phone locked with a password. You have to input the pin when you want to view the homescreen. Why cant this feature be similar to the smartphone where the homescreen is viewable without having to input the pin.
Any solution to this please? Otherwise my Touch Pro is up for sale. It came with a two-year warrantee.
BTW does this effect all PDA phones?
Thanks
Yea, you can disable locking and buy case that shows TP screen.

Thanks for the suggestions but I cant afford not to lock the device for security reasons.
Dont you have clock visible at task bar upper right corner, even with device locked?
I do.
Your case problem should be easy to fix.

Yes! Really!! Still, if its only the clock thats no good for me. I also want to check on my apppointments... mails...
I cant see any way you could check all your stuff with device lock on. Thats basicly it's idea, not to let any random phone dangler to see your stuff.

Well at least on my Tornado Smartphone I can view information that is quite useful in my day to day life. Not to check but just view what's on the home screen.
Anyway never mind. Its gonna be gone once Xperia is out since this is aint the only issue I am facing.

I doubt the Xperia will be any different. This is just how WM operates, and I don't think the Xperia "panels" interface will change that.
You can look for software that locks your device only when it's lost or stolen, or other 3rd party locking programs that might allow you to display certain information. But frankly I agree; if the premise of locking a device is to prevent others from seeing your information, then when the device is locked, your information shouldn't be displayed.
What about Throttlelock from www.throttlelauncher.com?
It's a pattern-based screen lock software that's quite useful and can be unlocked very quickly with the swipe of your finger in a designated pattern of your choice. Just hit the power button to turn the screen off which relocks it.
It's transparent enough to see through to your home screen and view your appointments and the time. Been using this on my Tilt and I love it! Hope this helps...

Have you ever seen the homescreen of any HTC Smartphone while it is locked??
I dont have to unlock to see if there is emails, or appointments due.. and the time..
It is not enough for you to use standard device lock in WM,that locks only the buttons? It is available via todayscreen plugin(or also some other ways) which you can unlock by tap on left softkey and somewhere middle-right button afterwards. So it works as in regular phones with keyboard. That will unlock everything and anyone can have access to your data, therefore the question about enough. Or do you need to protect your data, but with visible homescreen?

I want to protect data and at the same time have the homescreen easily visible. This will allow me to check whether there is new email, check my appointments, as well as the time and day. Just like in my tornado I have everything at a glance without having to go through the login. why was it possible in smartphone?
i don't think that's ever been possible as it defeats the purpose of having a device lock. the device lock protects anyone from viewing what's on your device which is the pda part and the simlock prevents ppl from using your device as the phone part.
being able to view the home screen while the device is "locked" defeats the purpose of a lock as that home screen can contain confidential info.

WM Standard and WM Pro are just different like that. I am sure you can find a third party locking utility that does what you want, but the default is like this.
illi, it seems we meet here too, hello .
I had in plan to buy a touch pro too BUT I've done some research (thanx to xda!) and found out that this super-nice pocketpc with superb features (in paper) has a lot of bugs.
I've started a topic with common problemes.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426585
Note: there are just some of the found bugs!
So right now I will stick to my beloved HTC Tornado till the problems will be fixed.
Anyway, the described scenario is not a touch pro issue, it's just the ppc..
I don't have a Touch Pro, but on my I-Mate I use an app called 'ThrottleLock', and made my own skin with the background and buttons almost transparent so today screen is still visible. I can provide my mods if you like.
It's a much cooler way of unlocking than using a pin (like Google Android) and runs on startup. It won't come back if the device is hard-reset though, but then all your data would be gone anyway by that point.

Have you checked out the SonyEricsson MBW-150 bluetooth watch? With moneytoo's app smartWatchM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=362218 you can keep your phone silent, tucked away, and still get vibrating alerts on your wrist of incoming mails, the mail title, who sent it, stopwatch, control your music player, rss-feeds, accept or reject incoming calls, know who's calling, and afaik you can turn on and off the screen of your device remotely (I believe it requires xtra software on your device), tasks info is available on your watch etc etc. Needless to say you get time and date as well, synced to your device. Check it out!
the other option would be (if you have a bluetooth headset) get microsoft voice command, and when u initiate (hopefully this can be done with the lock on) just ask it "what time is it" and it will tell u.

[Q] App to notify me when spouse arrives at work safely?

My wife and I are looking for an app, setting, something, that will notify each of us when the other arrives at work. Once she's arrived at work, she doesn't have the time to whip out her phone and create and send a text to let me know she got there safely.
I'm looking for the something that, perhaps, notifies me, in some way, when her wifi or GPS recognizes when she's arrived in a specific location. Or, maybe even better, a gesture app/setting that allows her to swipe her finger in a specific pattern on the homescreen which triggers the phone to send me a preconfigured text message.
I doubt this is an option, but maybe best of all would be something similar, where she can send that preconfigured text, but from a widget on the lock screen or through a lock pattern that differs from the actual pattern you use to unlock your phone.
I also would prefer something that doesn't take up much in the way of system resources/battery. Thanks!
You can do it easily with Tasker. But it's a little bit hard to learn using it.

I'm just giving you crap; thanks for the tip! I'll check out tasker real quick.
Automate It is easier than Tasker, but not nearly as powerful. Should be enough for your needs though.

Lockscreen prank app idea

I have come up with a wonderful idea for an app.
so basically a temporary lock screen replacement app.
The user taps a shortcut, locks the device and puts their device down... When the peeking friend comes to mess around and post inappropriate status' on facebook they are greeted with a simple, slide to unlock lockscreen, they slide then it simply plays this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzMAsVvHZlQ
Like the android lollipop locking apps feature, they wouldnt be able to exit the video without doing a specific combo.
and after you get back to your phone and dont want that lockscreen running anymore it automatically turns itself off after the single use.
Let me know your thoughts on this and if you would be interested in helping develop this app!
Cheers.

[Q] Lock Screen Security

Hi, I am trying improve the security on my phone, There has been a recent report about a guy who was forced to enter his unlock screen password to border officials at the airport (although he didn't comply). This is a HUGE abuse of power and an even bigger violation of privacy.
I hope never to be in that situation, but if i am i want an easy way out so i am looking for the following solutions:
Entering a secret code / Pattern on the lockscreen that would trigger a factory reset
And / Or
A secret code / Pattern on the lockscreen that would load a "dummy" home Lanucher
as far as i can tell neither exist. Any help/Advice would be great, thanks
Just enter into the guest mode?
HOW??

How? I mean suppose that official is infront of you , how will you switch to gusest mode wihout letting him know .... i mean in power off option ?? or any other way?
What you are describing is similar to the plausible deniability mode of Truecrypt. However Android doesn't have this function natively, and I don't see how you can implement it without doing some major modification to the system.
What about bringing a secondary phone as a distraction instead?
There is already one major bug in Google Play services 7.0.97 reported by Android Police which alllows attackers to unlock the phone without any password since it takes around 15 ~ 20 seconds to re-apply the lock. Another hole seems that attackers could steal your phone if your phone just gets into the standby mode with disabled sceen. There are general known attacks with such smart-lock enabled function which allows to bypass the pin.
not sure if this is relevant , but on any phone i've owned with a 'swipe-down-status-bar' when phone is showing lock screen all i have to do is swipe the status bar down and can click on any icon to bypass lockscreen then back out of that setting , i.e. settings , apps , wifi , etc. and will be on home screen.

That only works if you didn't set any password lock.
I have es file manager, and i zip and password protect files or folders wich i need but dont want people finding if my phone ever gets stolen. you can check that out.
Maybe there's gonna be something I oversee, but you could (easily) do this with Tasker.
You could use tasker to make an 'app' to login with a different profile on your android. By opening that app, you go into a self-defined stealth-mode, where you disable everything you want to hide and where you open a minimal homescreen.
Tasker + Secure Settings should have all the tools you need to set it up without destroying your real security.
Maybe dual booting to an empty ROM with sdcard access removed and only a small amount of fake information down on the device?
Would not help if they decided to copy your entire devices info for a close exam but should fool most guards into thinking you don't use your phone much.
Just reboot into that ROM at any time you think anyone would ever check.

Looking for app to lock entire phone (not just apps)

I can't be the only one wanting this, right? I am someone who doesn't use screen lock. I like to just quickly swipe to unlock my screen.
But sometimes at work when you keep your phone on your desk and want to go to the toilet, you want to quickly lock the phone just in case. Or you are charging your phone and need to step away for a minute. You want to quickly lock it up, and quickly unlock it again with a PIN. Android (and Samsung) do not make this easy, because going through the Settings page to enable and disable the screen lock is troublesome. It takes quite a few steps. I just need an app (or even widget) that quickly toggles a phone lock. It doesn't even need to use the Android system's screen lock.
There are plenty of apps that let you lock down individual apps. But I can't find one that locks down the whole phone just like the stock screen lock. I can understand this is not easy to program, but I think it is possible. Because I see apps like this that can keep you in the lockscreen until a certain time limit.
https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.teqtic.lockmeout
If Android Pie had a quick toggle for changing screen lock type (e.g. PIN / swipe), that would be perfect. I can't believe the developers haven't considered this. I mean, they even made a toggle for flashlight...
I don't want to use a custom launcher because I really like Samsung's One UI, and I don't want to install something like Tasker because I don't want to give it excessive permissions or root my phone.
Does anyone know of an app or a method to achieve what I described?
