[GUIDE] Change CyanogenMod 12 (CM12) Boot Animation - Android General

THIS GUIDE IS TESTED WORKING ON CYANOGENMOD 12 WITH THEME ENGINE ONLY.
Please do not post that this isn't working for you unless you have a ROM which has the CyanogenMod 12 theme engine installed.
It should theoretically work on all ROMs based off CM12 like CyanogenMod 12, GearCM12, AICP, Vanir, BlissPop, CyanideL, Candy5, Euphoria, Temasek, Resurrection Remix, Screw'd, Validus, Team UB, Dirty Unicorns and many more!
I recently posted a thread on changing the lock screen wallpaper on CM12 (which got featured on the portal ). And now, I'm gonna share another way of customizing the CM12 on your phone. As you know, you can't apply custom boot animations except through the theme engine- until now. Some people did figure this out, but I couldn't find a thread anywhere that listed the steps to do this clearly. So I thought I'd post one. Devs probably already know how to do this, but I'm hoping this helps some newbies out there.
Please follow this carefully step by step or this may not work for you. If you ARE on a ROM based off of CyanogenMod 12, and you did these steps correctly and it still didn't work (I don't see why it wouldn't), post your device information and ROM details and I'll look into it.
What boot animations will work?
Try to do this only with a boot animation that was meant for CM12, with the correct resolution of your phone. Pay attention to the dpi when downloading your boot animation. Most devs will provide boot animations for different resolutions. Make sure to download the correct one. If you try to do this with an incompatible boot animation, mess up your phone then point your finger at me, I will laugh at you. This is relatively easy, and if you followed the steps correctly, you will not go wrong. Pay attention.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU READ THE F.A.Q. BEFORE DOING THIS.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get started.
Things you'll need:
A ROM based off of CM12 (duh)
Root access.
A root file explorer.
Here's a video tutorial I made to make things easier to understand:
Here are the steps:
Download/place the boot animation you want to apply in your internal/external storage and remember it's location. THIS HAS TO BE A .ZIP FILE.
Go to theme manager, and apply the boot animation of the stock theme. <-- IMPORTANT. Or the new boot animation will NOT work.
Download, install and open a root file browser. (ES File Explorer recommended)
Grant the file explorer root access.
Go into the root directory and then go to system/media.
Scroll down till you find a file named "bootanimation.zip". Rename that to "bootanimationOLD.bak" to keep it as a backup.
Now navigate to where you saved your new boot animation, and rename it to "bootanimation.zip" ONCE AGAIN. THIS HAS TO BE .ZIP FILE..
Now move this file to the location mentioned above (system/media).
Change permissions to -rwx r-- r--
Reboot the phone now, and watch your new boot animation.
F.A.Q.
Q: How do I revert to the old boot animation?
A: Simple. Just delete the new one, and rename the backed-up boot animation.
Q: Will this work on ROMs other than the ones based off of CM12?
A: I do not know. I've only tested this on Resurrection Remix 5.3.1 which is based off of CM12 on a S4 GT-i9500. Give it a shot, and if it worked, let me know so I can update the OP.
Q: Will this cause any bricks or bootloops if I mis-rename the files?
A: Theoretically, no. If something isn't right, the phone should just start up, but without any boot animations. I've never had any other problems with this. But if you DO get stuck in a bootloop or anything like that, rename the files back from the recovery. Make sure to have a backup so you can revert changes from the recovery. But if you followed the steps EXACTLY like I mentioned and set the right permissions, then this WILL work. Watch the video for proof. A few other XDA members have already tried this method and it works just fine.
Q: What happens if I just rename the existing one and don't replace it with anything?
A: You might possibly end up with a bootloop, a soft brick, or no boot animation during boot. Revert changes through recovery to get out of this.
Q: What boot animations will work?
A: Try to do this only with a boot animation that was meant for CM12, with the correct resolution of your phone.
Q: I did this, and I see a boot animation, but it's not the one I downloaded and applied.
A: Go to theme manager, and go into boot animations. Select the system (default) and apply it. It should work. (You should have done this in the first place.)
Q: I did everything right, and it still doesn't work!
A: Please make sure you did everything correctly again. Redo all the steps. Watch the video for more help. Verify that you've set the permissions right, renamed it properly, set the stock theme's boot animation. If it still doesn't work, then it means your ROM just doesn't support it. Ask the dev for help.
Watch the video if the steps seem complicated to you. If you're gonna tell other people about this, please link back to this thread.
Enjoy your new CM12 boot animation. :good:

Oneplus One, CM 12 (Sabermod by RobbieL811), and this boot animation from here. Gets stuck at boot animation. I tried five different boot animations (all for CM 12) and they all get stuck. Only one that boots is the stock boot animation.

Just tried that exact same animation on my Galaxy S4 i9500 to test it. It works flawlessly using the same method.. Using CM12 (Euphoria OS by BlaqueDroid). See attached screenshots!
I have a feeling that THIS is your problem.

I'm aware of that issue, but tbf, I don't think that's the issue in my case. I have to get into recovery and delete the Theme folder in /data/system and then it boots fine. This has something to do with the CM12 theme engine. Pretty buggy still.

I have no idea then :/ I've tried various boot animations using this method on my phone, and about five other friend's phones including the Nexus 5 and Galaxy S5.. They all worked fine.

[MOD][06.05.2011] Galaxy Tab Stock Boot Animation

For those who might like to revert to the original/stock boot animation on their Samsung Galaxy Tab, here is a flashable zip patch
Quite straightforward...
Copy the zip file to your device
Boot into CWM Recovery
Install zip from wherever you placed it
Reboot
The patch has been repaired and now has no known side effects so flash away if you prefer to stock boot animation
Thanks to alterbridge86 for the hard work
Android flash is not appearing with the flashable zip black screen after ring

File updated.
Please check and let us know
Nope still black screen. Problem is prolly in my tab. Something got messed up maybe?
EDIT pushing the bootanimation the thread i posted gives me android animation and no problem. Flashable zip gives me blackscreen after samsung splash. Is it cause i removed the previous bootanimation?
To add. I tested after another fresh flash of overcome.
Updated
The file in the first post has been updated.
It now works without the blank screen
Thanks to alterbridge86 for his help
Thank you and alterbridge86 for the great work.
Thx MK and Alterbridge86 to.
Stock in the beginning and stock at the end.
In between runs the great Overcome...
Haha... Great indeed!

Maybe it is coincidence but after flashing the bootscreen via CWM my wifi stop working.
It stays at waiting for ip-adress and all my apps which needs root access could'nt get root access any more.
While Superuser has granted them the access.
btw i did also wipe my cache.
Just to play with my luck i flashed the 1.6.4 update file.
After flashing the updater Wifi works again and all my superuser works again also.
@ MK
I will report my finding on converting the notification sounds to you this evening.
To be sure i restocked and flashed the restock-bootscreen again.
Same thing happens as written above.
Yes I can report the same. I did a fresh flash though after to get things working. Guess its weird samsung engineering like camera app related to the email lol.

Yes a few of us are having the Wifi problem...
Not sure if it's related to flashing the bootanimation but it is being studied to death as we speak
I dunno if its bootanimation. Adb push like you described when you first started this thread causes no issues. But an extra step is to delete bootanimation.
I have removed the file as it apparently breaks Wifi and causes some instability with root privileges...
Another update will be posted with a fix later tonight
Edit: First post updated with ADB commands and a working .zip that has no negative side affects. I will flash a CWM flashable zip once issues are resolved
Original post updated with a repaired CWM flashable zip
Thanks
Thanks, this is just what I was looking for. Worked perfectly for me.
Yep worked great here on overcome gold rom
Thanks a ton for the stock bootanimation I always prefer it over custom ones Had a request if its possible...I notice that the sound is missing from the start up...there was a nice tune to the new gingerbread stock animation in the stock rom...is it possible to get a version with sound up? Hope its not a big bother!
Thanks & Cheers!

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Rush: Boot Animation Issue?

Hi, I'm new here.
So I've got kind of a funny problem.
It involves my root system folder.
I neglected to make a back-up in my haste to make a custom boot animation for my Samsung Galaxy Rush.
It had .qmg format for the files so I flashed a zip that I believed would allow me to easily install a new boot animation.
But something kind of strange happened. The mod worked, but not in the way you'd expect. A few hours before I installed the mod I purchased Rom Toolbox Pro that has Boot Animations included with it. I tried to install one that I thought was nice before I realized that it was specifically for an HTC Eris. Luckily for me, the install failed from the app, so I was left with the same old Boost Mobile animation on start-up. Funny thing though, is I found a few more appropriate boot animations in the same app that I'd prefer and they also failed to install. Although I believe the Eris one was my first attempt.
So then I install bootanimation4U, from a developer on this site, and much to my chagrin, instead of the bootanimation.zip I put into my system > media folder, the HTC Eris boot animation showed up upon restart instead.
Can anyone explain this?
Or at least inform me on how to return my boot animation back to normal?
just flash the stockrom to return to the normal boot animatian

I don't have a stock rom. Samsung Galaxy Rush is kind of obscure. I don't think there's anything about them on this site.
I'm kind of a noob. Could you explain how I could manage this?
Well. Actually. I do have a stock rom I could flash. But I'm not sure I trust the source exactly. It's not from xda.
I suppose I could make a back-up.
-------------------------------------------------------
Okay. I flashed the only stock rom I could find and it wont load past the samsung screen.
------------------------------------------------------
Problem solved, but I flashed a custom ROM. Boot animation still gone.

[Rom] [Stock] [Rooted] [Deodexed] [Debloated] [TWRP Flashable Zip] [SM-T350]

The reason I am posting here and not in the Rom section is because I am not a developer. I am an Android enthusiast who, with the help of a few awesome tools, some reading and some help from a couple of great devs, I was able to build a custom rom from a stock first release. I have been running it now for a couple of weeks and battery life is awesome. Just enough Samsung apks left in too call it a stock rom but not so many to cause it to lag. I thought that since it was running so nice, I would share it with you. So, without further ado, this is what I came up with.
"Ghost Project v1.0 6.0.1 t350" This is only for the t350.
With the help of a few awesome people, that provided me with the direction and resources links, I was able to take a stock firmware.tar (T350XXU1BPE3) and make a TWRP flashable zip. This is what I came up with:
I am not a developer..... Let me make this clear.. Lol.. I am not a developer. But I did use an awesome tool that allowed me to make this rom " superr kitchen" .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/chef-central/android/kitchen-superrs-kitchen-t3202296/page26
So first and foremost a big thanks goes out to this developer for this awesome tool.
I would also like to give props to Samsung and Sammobile.com for the firmware.
The kernel is from http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-a/development/kernel-galaxy-tab-sm-t555-5-8-2016-t3433560 and is a stock, permissive kernel. By "[ashyx, http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4899305 Recognized Contributor]" another awesome dev. This is a stock kernel in every respect with SElinux set to permissive.
I would also like to thank and give props to"{FankieT} of {R3Ds themes and Development}" https://plus.google.com/communities/102477541363210451018 for all of his help and guidance. He was who got me started into Linux through Ubuntu and spent many hours teaching this old dog the ways of Android coding. Just a pinch of coding on my part..lol

Use at your own risk. ********You have been warned..*********
Features:
1. Rooted with chainfires SuperSu in system, not systemless (I hate systemless root)
2. Busybox installed
3. Debloated. I didn't go too far (for reliability) but will work on getting more Samsung system apps removed.
4. Zip aligned
5. Deodexed (I may make one that is odexed later on)
6. Removed Kies
7. Custom kernel
Stock but SElinux permissive (see note on developer in Intro)
8. Some script changes but nothing to change system behavior
9. Added ES File explorer v3.2.5.
This app will try to update unless Play Store settings are changed to not auto update. But if you like the latest than update it.
10. Added Nova Launcher v3.3
I don't like the newer Material Designed updated builds. This will also try to update unless settings in Play Store are set to not auto update.
11. Latest Google Keyboard.
I just don't care for Samsung's and like the theming features of Google's latest keyboard. Samsung keyboard is still in though if you prefer to use it instead.
12. According to the toolkit, Knox was removed. Although I still see it in the settings tab under Settings/about phone. I don't think this can be removed safely however all updates (annoying notifications stating that there is an update available) have been removed so there shouldn't be any chance of accidentally updating to the latest firmware, if any is released. If you want an update than you will have to download any updates ( if the are any) from Samsung and use Odin to install it.
Kernel:
Here is a link to the kernel developer's thread, who is another awesome dev, who's kernel is the heart of this rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...el-galaxy-tab-sm-t555-5-8-2016-t3433560/page8
By "[ashyx, Recognized Contributor]" This is a stock kernel in every reguard with SElinux set to permissive.
A few other small things here and there but mostly stock.
-This is a flashable zip using TWRP recovery and I highly recommend the 2.8.7.0 build as apposed to the 3.0.2.0 build that is also on XDA in this forum.
Link to recovery built by "ashyx" an awesome dev...

-Since this is a stock rom build, gapps are included
#####Flashing instructions#######
###MUST BE ON MARSHMALLOW BUILD ****T350XXU1BPE3******####### so, if you are on a lollipop build (5.0.1) you need to update to 6.0.1 and have TWRP installed........
1. Make a backup onto your external SD card or on a PC using TWRP recovery. This is a very important step as things do go wrong. You have been warned.
2. Wipe. I recommend a clean install with all 4 major wipes done (system, Cache, Dalvik Cache and Data)
3. Flash "Ghost Project v1.0 6.0.1 t350" rom zip.
4. Wipe both Cache and Dalvik Cache
5. Reboot to system and profit.
*****The first boot will take a long time to boot. Put the device down and walk away until it boots (could take up to 15 minutes ) but most likely around 12 to 15 minutes. That is because all files are deodexed.
After it boots up Go ahead and set up the device the way you like it and enjoy.
I also have a Google Plus Communitee Called "Hayes Tech Rom Reviews" where you can go to watch reviews/overviews of custom roms for many devices that I own. I have about 20 to 25 devices now and try to do reviews on all the diferent roms out for them. I also have awesome links like the 3Minit battery mod by{made by "gharrington"} for the Nexus 6 and many more things. Please feel free to stop by.

Warning, I am not a developer. All I am doing is sharing my personal build. I am not nor will I be responsible for anyone ruining your device. Thermonuclear war or Loss of job from device not working is your responsibility. And above all this zip will void your warranty.
I can't think of anything else..lol.. This is the first time for me so I'm not too sure about proper post etiquette for Custom Roms. I am not posting in the roms section because I am not a developer. I do not have the skills those great people have. We just do not have any stock based roms yet and mine is running great so I am sharing with you all. I am going to try to add more custom features and may even add a pure stock rom for total stock experience, let me know... Enjoy.

Yes it does. I used the kernel that is in this forum to build it with and it is a permissive kernel. The version is v87.1-sdk23-arm made by Wanam specifically for Samsung. I am running it now asking with gravitybox and a few other mods.
Just remember that since it is deodexed it will take a long, long time to boot. I timed it on my last 2 flashes at around 13 minutes both times. My battery life is outstanding.

I screwed something up with a xposed module (I guess, everything was fine until I installed a power menu module and told it to reboot into recovery). No matter what I did, It would only boot into twrp. Even if I powered off and plugged the charger in, instantly twrp. Reflashing the rom did absolutely nothing, I had to odin stock then reflash this rom.
Ah well, live and learn with xposed.. I know not to install that power module lol

I hear ya. Xposed is something I use only if I know the module. I never use test version (anymore .. lol) I did the same thing you did a whike back with some other mod.
The only mods I use are Gravitybox, Notify Clean, Xuimod, and sometimes either HK theme engine out Xtheme engine. Gravitybox has most all mods that I need built right in it including an advanced powed menus settings.
Also, when you were in that issue, did you try using the Xposed uninstall zip? That may have got you fixed up too.

Boot Animation on my Samsung Galaxy Note Pro running TWRP Custom Rom Nougat

My Friends,
I am new to this world, although I was able to put Android Nougat 7.1.2 ROM and Gapps on to my Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 myself. I believe that I got them from here, Lineage 14.1 unofficial 20170106 v1awifi. I have a question. I made sure that I am rooted properly and everything else is working great, thanks all you ROM builders. So then I find a copy of ROM Toolbox Pro 5.5.1, I read that this program will let me change my boot animations and other things. I am super excited because I'm just a kid at heart when it comes to making things how I like them. I tried all night to get ANY boot animation to work and nothing. I know the program has some control because it deleted my boot animation that came with the ROM, Lineage with an upside down smile and 3 circles I think it was. So now I'm at my wits end trying to make this program work, and nothing. I'm stuck with some boring android boot animation and I can't do anything about it. I admit defeat and register here for some help, from you smarter than I am users, in understanding what is not working right. Oh, I didn't flash it or nothing like that (the boot animations) it said that it installed and then nothing but android. So I beg, please, someone with some know how please help me find out what I did or didn't do so as to make this work.

[ROM][VZW] Stock ROM Zips for Orbic Wonder

Stock Rom ZIPs for Verizon Orbic Wonder
Here's stock ROM zips for the Verizon variant Orbic Wonder. I wouldn't flash this on a vanilla Wonder if I were you, it might screw stuff up. One's a completely stock ROM and the other's pretty much just a normal stock ROM with some debloating here and there. Made using /system and /boot images pulled from a Verizon Orbic, and repacked into a flashable ZIP with SuperR Kitchen. By having this we can flash back to, now we hopefully feel a lot safer trying out and experimenting with other ROMs/mods for this phone. Also you'll need an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery to flash this too.
Since our only TWRP image for this phone is a dirty port from the E4 Plus as of writing this post, I had to remove the "ro.getprop" safety checks from the updater-script to get it to work and flash on the phone. This means that this can theoretically be flashed on any device, which would obviously break your phone if you flashed it on a non-Wonder. Be careful!
WHAT WORKS:
For the non-debloated ROM, everything
For the debloated ROM, everything except what's listed below
WHAT DOESN'T WORK/BUGS:
Some people that tested it reported Google Play crashings and Package Installer not being able to work. If this happens just flash pico OpenGApps in custom recovery and it should clear it right up no problemo
DOWNLOAD:
Link to my Orbic Wonder repo as a whole, where these ZIPs are stored
THANKS TO:
Team Orbic that I'm working with on Telegram to turn this phone into something special, specifically @noidodroid for getting those image pulls for us when we didn't have root at first
XDA user @SuperR. for that bangin' kitchen he made, this let us turn system and boot images into a TWRP flashable zip
Jason has did an awesome job with these builds!! We're working hard towards that (LOS) LineageOS build or AOSP. Until then when i get free time I will be working on a Totally unique cooked, debloated, deodexed, Rom with xposed, kernel mods, custom Launcher, Themes and more! Mine is a bit different than Jasons. I have debloated it and done all the mods i just mentioned just havent broke it down in the kitchen and cooked it up yet. All in due time.

I installed orange fox recovery on my RC555L and after that the screen is getting messed up. I am attaching a video of exactly what happens.
After boot it looks normal, when I turn the screen off and back on it looks messed up. Any ideas?
I reinstalled the stock recovery from your downloads and it did not fix the problem.
Installing stock rom did not fix the problem. I used the one you provided. It boots fine just when I turn the screen off and on it looks like the picture below.

OF was a decent recovery but we never completely finished up porting it so that it ran without any hitches. My copy AFAIR ran great and with the Fox addons. I however ditched Fox for 2-3 or so of our other 12? recoveries we have for this devices. Try downloading Batak Recovery. We did this. See if it runs better for you. Depending on what you are wanting to do... boot image, install zip afterwards and go from there.

Sadly not yet but I hope to get some done this summer. I literally have 50 phones and half are all dedicated as "project" phones .. I really have to tone it down a bit I think.

The Orbic Wonder is still getting around! Good to see. I almost had the kernel source from Orbic. If someone wants to try them i can share contact info I received speaking to a worker there. I also still have 4 or 5 of the Wonder handsets here waiting for if I ever get spare time. Enjoyed the phone when it first came out. Fun phone.. Still not a bad phone in today's world running stock or with Jason's working cooked Rom.
Im tring to root my orbic and i followed this video but when it got to the end and restarted its saying encryption unsuccessful and wont do anything else only thing i can do is get into red fox recovery can any one assist me? maybe reflash?
