[Resolved] [Q] Importing Contacts from Backup corrupted by Contacts+ - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone,
hope this is the right place for my question:
The facts:
Device: Evo 3D GSM
Old Rom: CM10.2 Android 4.3.1
New Rom: CM11.0 Android 4.4.4
Recovery: 4Ext Recovery Touch v.1.0.0.6 RC2
Available Backups: Full Nandroid, Partial TB (including contacts storage)
I upgraded my phone from CM10.2 to CM11. Before I made a complete backup using the CWM recovery and backupped some things, including the contacts storage, manually as well with Titanium.
Now everything is running fine, except for the contacts, which for some reason are not restorable. After an restore attempt and before opening the contacts app the contacts2.db has the correct size (about 38mb) and still has it after a reboot. But opening the contact app after reboot and waiting for it to finish its update process somehow resets the contacts2.db file.
I used contacts+ as contact app, and had several contact accounts on my old setup (whatsapp, facebook, and contacts+ and maybe more).
What I already tried:
- Restoring via Titanium -> Contacts app loads after reboot but contacts app stays empty
- Restoring from Nandroid backup using Titanium -> same result after reboot and opening contacts app
- Restoring from Nandroid using AppExtractor -> Contact app crashed continuously until contact storage data were deleted, but contacts2.db stayed at correct size
- Extracting data from contacts2.db but no satisfying outcome, either all contacts from all accounts or only phone numbers.
When I connected the phone in debug mode I got these interesting debug messages out of LogCat in Eclipse:
"E/ExternalAccountType(3258): Problem reading XML in line 92 for external package com.contapps.android"
"E/ExternalAccountType(3258): com.android.contacts.common.model.account.AccountType$DefinitionException: Undefined data kind 'photo/Contapps'"
As com.contapps.android is the package name of the Contacts+-App I suppose the error is somewhere in the things it has done to my contacts database.
But I'm unable to figure out what it is or how to resolve the issue.
Any help is appreciated, I'm already quite desperate with this problem
Cheers,
Chris
Edit:
Resolved this by backing up the new ROM, reverting to the old backup and uninstalling Contacts+ there which fixed the database.

[Q] contacts2.db overwritten on boot

Hi all,
I have an X10 which had 2.1 stock FW installed.
-got root, dualtouch, xRecovery all working
-synced contacts to google
-made a backup with xRecovery
-flashed FreeX10 beta 4, gapps, hotfix, market, all sucessfully
Everything worked so far. And then when I synced again, all contacts were without phone numbers. So I logged on to google to check and yes all contacts were without numbers there too. So I though what the hell, I'll revert to the backup and sync again. But the backup kept WLODing. I tried all possible combinations of wiping cache and restoring and whatnot. So I decided to do things manually:
-extracted data.img
-found contacts2.db
-opened adb shell and deleted current contacts2.db file and replaced it with the old one with all the phone numbers, changed ownership to app_1.
And I thought that should be it... Instead what happens is that as soon as I launch Contacts app, the contacts get reverted to the first state, ie. without phones. The funny thing is, if after the whole procedure I tap really fast on the call log, I can see al the old calls and the old contact names - everything - but just for a second, and then from nowhere one by one everything gets overwritten again by the just-deleted ones. How is that possible, and what am I doing wrong?

This is my problem (except for Nexus S) and this thread got no replies. Thought I might check if the Nexus S community has any thoughts.

[Q] Contacts Restore corruption, please HELP.

Hi to everyone.
I am Tommaso, from Tokyo and I need help BIG time.
I backed up all my contacts on my SD card and deleted them from my phone.
When I restored them some "fields" were missing, amongst them "organization" which is vital for sorting: Now I get a long list of numbers (*) and then the remaining contacts sorted by name (correctly). (*) In these contacts the "organization", "Job Position" and others are missing while others as "notes" and numbers are still there.
When I try to send an email, and I try to look up an email address, instead of giving me a list of names, it opens File Expert, with a file address: fe://home and nothing else.
To back up I used Go Contacts (the stock app is disinstalled): export to SD card.
In theory, besides this original backup, I should also have a second back up with Titanium because it is set to backup & syncs with dropbox everything, every night. However, this happened last night and I forgot to freeze the image so I am afraid that tonight's back up might have replaced the correct version.

I would really appreciate someone's help. You can imagine how dramatic it is, so TIA for any help.

Idea
Why not first use the back up to restore your phone first then
Go ahead and check the things inside the back up
Sorry if i am wrong it sounds like you are actually checking the contacts on the back up itself rather than letting the phone restore the back up and then viewing the contents
if i am wrong sorry for the speculation
I would like to ask also try using other Apps to restore Back up and restore
I would ask also what is the file output that you have ?
for your back up ?
Thank you for your post!
I did as you suggest: I physically restored the contacts to the phone.
Ok, I will try to install another app but it is unlikely anything will change: I backed up using Go Contacts so restoring with Go Contacts should have worked.
Go Contacts backup file is "vcf"
Titanium backup file I don't know what it's called or where to find it.

Did you say that your Titanium Backup for the contacts was already overwritten?
If you have set up Titanium to backup your apps/data automatically on a schedule, you should preferably set the backup history to more than 1. This is in case there is an error in one of your apps, and the automatic backup saves the erroneous version, you can restore an older backup from the history. Otherwise, your last backup will also be corrupted.
If your think your Titanium Backup for Contacts is fine, you don't need to look for the contacts file separately. Just go into titanium backup -> clcik on the back/up restore tab on the top -> look for Contacts -> Click once -> Click on Restore.
Repeat the above for Contacts Storage.
Not sure if I addressed your problem.
Thanks for your help!
I tried to restore from titanium back but I could only find GoContatcs. I cannot find "contacts storage". As I said, I have no idea if AND where GoContacts stores the contacts separately so i don't know which file to look for to restore.
I restored GoContacts (app+Data) but 0 contacts were restored.
Thanks for the tip. I am now setting Titanium BU to 2 backups. But I still need help!
Restore ROM Manager Backup
If I restore a previously backed up ROM, will this include contacts?
To restore a previously backed up ROM, do I need to FIRST factory reset the device? Or does the restore simply overwrite my present ROM? Do I need any other precaution/procedure to restore a previous ROM?

[Q] Flashing Same Rom without losing data

I have already Searched this but dint get satisfied answers....
I am Using Sense5 Rom(EXDERIOD) and installed about 30 apps and has System Data i.e contacts n msgs ,fnds stream and calendar sync..
Here is the Problem..Now it's not working properly(All my apps are force closing and Not letting me to install new apps Especially WATSPP IS FORCE CLOSING showing error "UNABLE TO OPEN MESSAGE HISTORY") after i tried some mods n flashed some extra stuff...
So I want to flash the SAME ROM again but without losing DATA sply System data... I know I can use Titanium for apps+data and MyBackUp Pro for CONTACTS & MSGS ...I used to do that whenever I Flash a New ROM ..
But Main Prob is ...CONTACTS (I Know GOOGLE give Backup but I linked all the contacts with fb and watsapp..and put images as caller IDs so if I get a Backup from GooGle or anyother app it gives only contacts and i have to linkup and do setup everything again)
I flashed only boot.img with fastboot lost all the data and also flashed ROM again giving bootloops and sometimes lost the data..
So any suggestions ??? or any Ideas???:silly:

SMS and Evernote restore.

Hey,
with no cyanogen updates for over a year now my OPO had been lagging and bloatish. Decided to install lineage.
I copied the phone files over to computer (didn't do a nandroid backup as i thought i would be able reinstall my apps and data through google after installing lineage OS and wanted as clean an install as possible)
Anyway, long story short, my phone feels nice and nippy but my sms backup file from Kammasbackup sms could not be recognised, kept throwing up an error.
Also my evernote files are saved as .enml files and not enex and therefor won't import through the PC or app.
2 questions then.
1: is there another app that can restore sms from .sms files, or an updated kammas backup app? or could it be that the backup file is corrupt? i can open it and see the sms threads however.
2: Can i somehow convert enml files to enex enabling them to be imported into evernote or is there another way for evernote to import enml files.
Help much appreciated.

Unable to Backup Messages: Backup corrupted, help required to transfer WhatsApp data to new phone

I have a 'Redmi Note 9 Pro max' phone. WhatsApp is fully functional, with a chat history of the last 5 years. I got a new Samsung S22 5g phone, and I want to move all my data to that phone. When I checked the WhatsApp chat backup, I saw that the last backup happened on February 7th to my Google Drive. I clicked 'Backup' button to manually take the backup. I got the error message 'Unable to back up messages' after 30 seconds. I tried rebooting the phone several times, changing networks, checking the permissions, etc., but I still got the same message. I verified the backup in my Google Drive, and I saw the backup happened last February 7. My database folder was empty since I cleared the msgstore.db files as part of saving storage space, which I used to do periodically since I know that WhatsApp will create daily local backups in that folder. I noticed that WhatsApp even stopped creating local backups daily, as it is supposed to.
After several attempts to create a new backup, I finally decided to restore the February 7 backup available in my Google Drive to my new phone. I added the Google Drive account to my new phone and installed WhatsApp there. Whatsapp correctly detected the backup in my Google account and began restoring the messages; however, at the end of the restore, it threw an error message saying "unable to restore your chats from this backup," and after that message, Whatsapp displayed a list of other Google accounts to check for other old backups, which I did not have. I skipped the restore and saw that it did not have any chat history. I immediately closed and uninstalled WhatsApp on the new phone, switched back to my old phone, verified the number again, and thankfully, I was able to keep WhatsApp on my old phone without losing any data.
Now all my applications have been migrated to my new phone, except WhatsApp. Ultimately, I see that the existing available backup is corrupted, and I don't have any other local backup files either. I took a copy of the msgstore.db.crypt14 file from the new phone while the restore happened from Google Drive. Keeping in mind that my WhatsApp is fully functional on my old phone, I would like to get help with any of the below solutions to migrate my WhatsApp data.
Fix the 'unable to backup messages' issue for creating a new backup to Google Drive or at least a local backup. As mentioned, WhatsApp stopped creating local offline backups.
Recover any of the recent msgstore.db.crypt14 files that I deleted to create free space.
Fix the corrupted crypt14 file, which I have taken a copy of.
Other than the built-in backup and restore method, is there another way to migrate WhatsApp?
Same problem here!
I tried a lot of things and eventually I was successful to some degree.
Whatsapp restore from local backup : Working method April 2022
Hello everyone, This troubleshooting guide is related to the situation where you have a backed up .crypt14 fle (data base file) for Whatsapp and are unable to restore the local backup for Whatsapp using the .crypt14 file and you have no back up...
forum.xda-developers.com
These steps worked for me to force upload a .crypt14 backup file to Google Drive. I was able to restore the messages. I had to kill Whatsapp though because the restore process got stuck.
But the messages seem to be all back.
Another problem appeared though. I am unable to create new Backups due to an error.
I am now using Fouad Whatsapp Mod because it has its own backup and restore function which works.
My phone is not rooted so I extracted the Whatsapp key and unencrypted database with WhatsApp Key/Database Extractor.
I have installed the Android Emulator Nox Player, activated Root und installed the Foud Mod. I was able to replace the msgstore.db in /data/data/com.whatsapp/databases/ with my unencrypted backup as descirbed here.
Then I was able to backup everything and copy the backup back to my phone and restore it there whith the Fouad Whatsapp Mod
The backup is located unter Documents/FMBackups/com.whasapp.zip
Thanks also to this post which helped me a lot.
I hope you'll be succesful, too!

Hi.
I also have the same problem, and i was hoping you or someone else could help me. Whatsapp got stuck on restoring the backup, so i had to kill it mid restore. The messages are back but now it can't create another backup.
My question is: how do I transfer my messages to Fouad Whatsapp Mod if I can't back them up? Both local and gDrive backups fail. It seems like it doesn't even create the .crypt14 file. Any tips? Thanks in advance
Hi,
I would suggest that you backup your messages with WhatsApp Key/Database Extractor. You can additionally copy your whole Whatsapp folder to your computer to have also a backup of your media.
Here you have a tutorial on how to install Fouad Mod keeping your messages.
Good luck!
Hi @Canny2010,
Do you able to resolve the issue?
Im havin the same issue, already researched for few but still have no resolution.
thanks

Keep showing 'unable to backup messages' issue for creating a new backup to Google Drive or local backup. WhatsApp stopped creating local offline backups, no files in folder databases.
Thanks

Which version is installed?
latest 2.23.7.80
That's also my installed version but I haven't any problems with it. My suggestions:
- try a higher version or beta
You searched for whatsapp - APKMirror
You searched for whatsapp - APKMirror Free and safe Android APK downloads
www.apkmirror.com
- rename the Whatsapp folder in your internal storage (/internal storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/) to force the app to create a new one (maybe there is sth messed up with the path/permissions?)
- in case there is still a valid backup on Drive I would also try an older version (s. apkmirror.com)
- rename the Whatsapp folder in your internal storage (/internal storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/) to force the app to create a new one (maybe there is sth messed up with the path/permissions?)
> above approach would caused me lost all the data?

You should rename it and not delete it. The folder is still there but WhatsApp won't find it. If it works just copy the files from the old to the new created folder.
Tried, same. Any tools can recommend? Pay version also OK.
I have the same problem. did you find a solution? Thank you
ps: without using root
