[Q] What Route Should I Take To Become An App Developer - General Questions and Answers

Hello there guys I'm new to the forum and have been looking all over the forums for an answer but I haven't found an exact answer. What can I do to become an App Developer? Its something that really interests me and I would like to learn and master it. I know its a career where I would be learning day by day but heres my real question. Whats the best route to take? Should I find a school near me where I can learn all the ins and outs of App Development? Or should I just teach myself how to do it. I have pretty much always taught myself how to do most of the things I do, like video editing, car audio installations etc. But on this one since I would like to pursue it as a career should I take it seriously and take it to a classroom? Or should I just teach myself how to do it? What do you guys think? I know theres a lot of experts here and some people who might have the same doubt I have. Thanks in advanced. Hope to learn a lot in these forums.

[Q] Where can I learn how to develop apps?

Hi, I am looking to develop windows mobile apps for my HTC HD2 and I was wondering if there is a free online course or some places that I can learn everything I need to know to start developing ASAP, I hope to become good at this and I will be posting on the forums frequently but can someone help me out? It would be greatly appreciated if you could give me some links.

ASAP? you could also begin with Visual Basic. thats Easy to learn and quite powerful.
hey yo techburrow i am really new to smartphones and apps. i got my hd2 less than a month ago...but i feel the same way...it feels like it's really underground to learn and teach this stuff. i wish i new someone to teach me some of it...but i have learned more on this topic at this site in a week than anywhere else. it is truly wonderful. have you tried wikipedia for more info? i wish this site had a "xda term dictionary". i'm having trouble just figuring out what words mean...but maybe they do and i haven't found it yet. good luck...your first app should be for people llike you who want to know how to build there own apps and don't know how. "myappbuilder" or something...peace.

P.S. Don't expect to learn all this stuff overnight, it's a long hard slog to become any good at it. Even then you'll still find room for improvement.
Good luck and don't give up.

[Q] I have an idea, but acknowledge my lack of programming skills. How to start?

So being my first post and all, I'm sure there is always that "WTF Noob, just learn it!", totally agree, but let me elaborate.
I like to think, I'm a thinker. Most of the things I think of, never go past that phase, because I'm not as good of a Do'er than I am a thinker. I think of an invention, but it never gets built, because I lack the skills to do it. The same goes for Apps. I have a good understanding of programming (went to school for a similar field), but I find my thinking surpasses my programming, so I leave that to the actual good programmers.
I have an idea for an application, which I won't go into detail on because of course I don't want people running out and building it, I want to be a part of that project and hopefully share in the profit . My problem is that I need someone to help make the idea come to life on the phone. I'm an interaction designer, so I'm able to work out the process flows, wireframes, and general interactions, but I can't build it, and the time it would take me to build it and learn, would most likely result in a product that wouldn't be as good.
My question is, where can I go to find people that would be willing to work with me to make an idea come to life? I'm looking for someone I can work with and build a relationship with to work on something like this. But short of hiring some dev group, I don't really know how to find someone who cares more about the project than some faceless dev group that my relationship would be purely business.
Any thoughts on how to get started? Obviously I post here hoping to spark some sort of interest, but I mostly reach out hoping for insight from people that may have done something like this before and can help guide me.
Thanks for reading such a long post

How do I become a developer?

I've been a member of XDA Forums since about October (when I got my vibrant). And I wad wondering how to become a developer. I feel like I should help contribute to this community instead of just being someone downloading and flashing. Im planning on majoring in computer science in college and I know it will help me with this type of stuff but I cant wait another year (Junior in high school)... I would really appreciate it if you guys would point me in the right direction or take me under your wing so I could pursue this interest.

I'm doing computer science also to become a dev, I'm a senior! I have no idea, but I would love to dev also, I know it takes a lot of work though.
Step 1 - cut a hole in the box
step 2 - put your junk in the box
step 3 - make her open the box
step 4 - and that's how you do it (its my d$#* in a box)
haha naw i'm jk, I would like a clear way on how to dev specifically for the vibrant, I've seen a bunch of different ideas and tutorials on how to do it, but their specific for that phone, and its hard to comprehend on how to put the knowledge to the vibrant
Yea I know its alot of hard work but it will all pay off in the end.
I think it would be nice if one of the vibrant developers put up a video of how to become a developer and a video of him/her cooking up a rom. Im sure alot of people would take intrest to that. It would also give us enough knowledge to maybe be able to develop other phones or programs.
Learn your way around a linux box as it's pretty much necessary to compile source and what not. If you're wanting to develop programs for Android, learn some Java...
there's a few good e-books on amazon for android developing if you can learn from books.
I think you should start out with themes....so you know exactly which apks control what...which XMLs control what...then get some Linux knowledge so you can know how to tweak for speed....then start to learn some Java and Smali code....and do a sh*t load of research....i tried to create my own ROM based from official Vibrant source....MAJOR FAIL ...i think my phone went into shock ....but find someone who is willing to teach you...but make sure you're patient enough to learn.
Due to the nature of vibrant roms anyone can be a developer! That's a good and bad thing. Anyways... best way to learn is to learn Java. Android is built on it. It may not loom like it on the surface but it helps (ask whitehawk). Mr apocalypse's advice is probably the best.
Also a video is a horrible idea(no offense). It will empower people who have no business making roms to make them. Do you want people who don't know how to make a flashable zip making roms for your phone? It could potentially lead to bad things...
I was where you were a couple years ago (not that I'm much further ahead). Learn you some Linux. Learn you some theming and try and make a simple app for android.

Looking to Develop Android Applications and Games

Yes, I've already searched the forums. I know there is a guide on here from a developer, but that doesn't leave as much open-endedness as I would like. I'm looking to learn to develop games and applications for the Android OS. I've spent the past week learning Java so that I could learn to develop for Android, but it seems to me that is only the tip of the ice berg. The question I have for you guys is how do I go about learning this stuff? I'm sure most of it is trial and error, but hell what can I try if I don't know where to start?
I know you guys probably get this type of question all the time, but I'm not wanting to take the easy "can you basically code it for me route?". I really want to make the game I have in mind and it's fleshed itself a bit more since I actually learned the backbone of the stuff as well. I've seen The New Boston stuff, but that guy doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. He calls > the less than sign and vice versa. :\

if you are e developer , to learn java (at least the basics) is the step no 1 , and its not so hard
if you have no idea what programming means , then you sould spend time to have some general knowledge about programming.
then you sould try to understand android platform , read general info , read sdk documentation , read about the structure of an android app , and
play a litle with Eclipse. you can find everything on the net. tutorials , code , how to etc.
Start doing tutorials, that's what I'm doing.
Check YouTube for beginning Android programming and stuff like that. Eclipse has some good tutorials as well

I think you are referring to my guide. You say it "doesn't leave as much open-endedness as [you] would like." What do you mean by that?
The guide is first and foremost written for beginners.. if you have suggestions on how I can improve it, let me know
And I wouldn't call learning "trial and error." It's more of practice and understanding.
You are right in saying "What could I possibly try if you don't know where to start?"
Following a structured series of tutorials at first will start you off on a strong foot.

University

Hey everyone at XDA, this is probably in the wrong section and i apologise for that, i am currently at college doing a software development course, and i would like a few tips into what course to take when i go uni, i want to continue into developing for phones, apps and stuff, as that is currently whats going forward in the world and its not dying any time soon, so i think it is a great thing to go into, i just dont know which course i should take, any pointers?

Java. Everything is Java. LOL
Beyond that, basic programming courses, C language (and any variants)...
It'll really depend on the platform you wish to code for, Ubuntu Touch, I'm sure, is inherently different from Android, as Android is from Apple, etc...
There are guides on here (actually in this very forum) that give you links to free programming courses from MIT.
Anything else a quick google search should turn up for you:good:
Good luck, and happy Dev'ing :victory:

What @Stryke_the_Orc said.. for android app development many people don't take a course as such just learn it in their free time as a branch away from their regular course. We have an app development forum as well where there are links to many guides as well as packages and libraries which you may find useful during the development of any app.. most of them are open source..
Also there are many Youtube video tutors which are available for app development and so is Google's own website @ developer.android..
So if you plan on taking on another course you can do this in your free time as well provided you know Java / C and its branches .. learning a new computer language is different skill set altogether.. which will require your full attention. So, depending upon your caliber and your own potential choose your course wisely.
Okay thank you very very much for both of your answers, they are both extremely helpful and i will take it all into consideration Thanks again
Whichever development path you choose, don’t forget good old fashioned Mathematics. In fact, stuffing as much of it into your head as it will stand, is not such a bad thing.
Sometimes it lets you see a much better/faster way of doing something.
Sign up for a course, or there are books from the library, even articles on Wikipedia.
Good Luck!
If you want to start developing for Android and you know Java, check out The New Boston's Android Development YouTube videos. They helped me a lot!
Am sure the best platform you can focus on now is Android
